(EFM)Education for Ministry by Steve Hanson

In September we began a EFM (Education For Ministry) class here at St. Margaret’s. Each month we will highlight one of the EFM students.

EFM, everyone wants to know what it’s all about...You ask, What is going on in the church library every Tuesday? Is it a book club? Well, they are reading a best seller, the Bible. But, why is it deathly quiet and then wild with laughter? What is “on-board” check-in, on the front porch, no lessTSA at the airport? And, at about 6 PM, trays of cheeses, dips, crackers andassorted sweets appear on the library table from out of nowhere. Is it the Last Supper? Then there is lively chatter and noshing for a break. I know they don’t watch movies, but just before they settle in to resume study, a huge bowl of hot popcorn arrives! Are they watching the food channel or the history channel?

Well, could they be that “Alphabet Group”, a “Ship of Fools” or those “EFMites” we hear about? It looks like some sort of “CULT” (used in the Bible, which is my personal, absolute favorite) group name for us. Whatever you call us, we are one of the most invigorating, intelligent and loving gifts God could put together.Seven eager students with two very gifted leaders. We first shared our personal spiritual autobiographies. While this can be a vulnerable experience, this mutual story time each of us shared bonded us immediately. Everyone in the class is wildly (in a blessed way) different and has so much to offer and to share. We all respect each other’s opinions and interpretations. In fact, that is what we build on when we work on our “Theological Reflection” from the week’s reading lesson- the real guts of the class. It is truly amazing how we incorporate everyday life and personal experiences into the readings from the Bible. To illustrate, I am showing you two pictures of our “TR” that we worked on last week showing the Exodus from Egypt to Sinai.

We were first going to start our journey depicted as X’s, but our leader, at the last minute, decided we were not just X’s , but the people on the journey, stick figures (stunning improvisation) in which we each put our own identity with colored markers. We then used the four-source model of Tradition, Culture, Action and Position to depict this trip (think of the TSA mentioned above). We then put ourselves in their “sandals”. by using our own experiences. We end class by writing a Collect, which we can then read aloud: Oh God who... We give thanks for... We pray for... So that... AMEN

This incorporates what we have learned from the lesson.I know, your all are saying, “What did they just do and how did they do it?” Well, after all, we are a “BRILLIANT CULT”!You too, can experience God speaking to you and leading you on your walk with EFM.

During this time, he held positions of Assis-tant General Manager, Vice-President & Regional Manager and Vice-President & General Manager. The divisions involved were Building Maintenance, Lighting and Security. Before leaving ABM, he was promoted to President of ABM Security respon-sible for over 4,000 employees with revenue of approximately $100,000,000.

Dennis is now busy playing golf & tennis and enjoying his family. Occasionally consulting in the lines of work that he had been responsible for in the past keeps his interest in the business community.

My name is Curt Gettis and I am excited about seeking a position on the Vestry of St. Margaret's Episco-pal Church.I was born, raised and educated in the Pacific Northwest. I was first a classroom teacher and then an elementary school principal for 32 years in Salem, Oregon where I met my wife Susan. We have been married for 34 years and have five adult children. We retired to Palm Desert for golf and sun 10 years ago.

I love St. Margaret's and I believe my talents can contribute to our continued growth and prosperity with God's help.

Barbara Gibson and her husband, Bob, joined St. Mar-garet’s in 2001 after perma-nently moving to the desert in 1998. Barbara was an educator for 35 years, working in public and private schools in five states throughout her career. She was a middle school science teacher before serving several years as a principal in Washington State and finally, here, at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School from 2001-2006 and 2009-2010. Barbara has also volunteered at the Cellar Door, on the Communication Commission and is currently coordinating our Outreach Bonus Bag program. One of her favorite SMEC “jobs” is being part of the team responsible for adult fellowship events like our recent Mardi Gras and Oktoberfest evenings. When she’s not working at SMEC, you can find her at The Living Desert where she is a Wednesday docent; leading school field trips and performing other interpretive duties.

The Rev. Troy D. Mendez, Associate Rector [email protected]

While the Spirit of Christmas remains in our hearts, a new year is beginning. By the time you receive this, you’ve probably already watched the Rose Bowl Parade, and you might have even witnessed the college football national championship. People start returning to school. Retailers recuperate from grappling with massive sales and even more massive returns of merchandise. And the Church begins to re-gather after the holiday festivities in the season of Epiphany.

Our church’s celebration of the Feast of the Epiphany takes place on January 6th. At that time, we begin to recall how God becomes flesh in the person of Jesus Christ and then is revealed to the Gentiles. The term “gentile” comes from a word that signifies people of a different heritage or background. In the gospels, all non-Jews are Gentiles. The word can also be translated as “the nations” or as “people of every tribe, language, family or nation.” Our English word “ethnic” is also a derivation of the Greek form of the word Gentile. In essence, the presence of Christ in the world unifies all of us, and invites the entire world into a new relationship and reality of love.

When Christ becomes known to the nations, a new reality begins to take place. Strangers – people of diverse backgrounds, those not always included in the mainstream – these strangers become

unified under the person of Jesus Christ. When we are told that “wise men from the East” came to visit the Christ child, we automatically assume that all of the Eastern visitors might have come from the same place. But the Bible doesn’t tell us that. Did the wise men know one another or were they merely traveling companions? And if there were merely traveling companions,

what might that tell us about their individual quests to follow the star, and eventually find the baby Jesus in the manger?

Regardless of how the wise men met one another on their journey, they traveled in search for the newborn king as a community of people. They looked out for each other’s survival. They most likely shared meals, stories of their families, and were greatly drawn into searching for the truth behind this mysterious revelation to the world.

And as a result of the magi’s search for ultimate truth, the church commemorates the season of Epiphany: A season that seeks to bring the light of God into the presence of community. Typically, we baptize infants on the first Sunday after the Epiphany, because we remember Jesus’s own baptism in the Jordan. The days in January are dark, and the season of Epiphany seeks to be a counterbalance to the wintry darkness that much of the world lives in during this time of year. The light overcomes the darkness, and the light of Christ permeates new aspects of our lives and this light infuses our common life and spirituality.

A new year, a new light, and new possibilities for community

“The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve” —(Matthew 20:28)Volunteering can happen in different forms, whether it is stuffing envelopes, greeting visitors, answering phones, making coffee or cleaning. There are many ways to volunteer and help out at St. Margaret’s. I want to help you to get “plugged in”. There are the obvious positions you see people doing around the church on Sundays; greeting, ushering, Altar Guild, Chalice Bearer, etc. But there are so many other opportunities for you in and around the campus all week long. Sometimes it is just a matter of seeing something and offering or contacting me in the office and share with me what you like to do and let’s see if we can match to a need. Below are some ideas of needs on campus but we are not limited to this list. Be prayerful and thoughtful and it can be so rewarding. If you already volunteer – THANK YOU. Share your

Donations to the Outreach Bonus Bag program set a new record during the Advent/Christmas season. Members and friends of St. Margaret’s contributed more than $3,200 to the program, which provides fresh produce, meat and dairy products to the people served by the St. Margaret’s Outreach Center. And some people signed up for monthly donations to be charged to their credit cards, making our overall contributions even higher.

Donors received gift cards to send to their friends and families announcing that a Christmas gift in their names had been made to the OBB program at St. Margaret’s. The theme of the cards was that the perfect gift for someone who has everything is a

How do I face a changing world? What resources does my church offer us to come to terms with a different world? Is there anything in the Bible, Sacraments, or Church teachings that will help me deal with change? Is God calling Christians to manage change? How has the Episcopal Church changed in the past 50 years? Come and explore these issues – in a five week course led by The Rev. Dr. Roger Douglas, held Wednesday afternoons starting on 1/9 at 4:30 p.m. We will meet in the Library.

Adult Education at St. Margaret’ssunday Mornings

Hear what the Spirit is saying (Meyers) 9am-9:45amThrough St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church you are invited to “Hear what the Spirit is saying” as we take up the Sunday readings at 9am every Sunday morning. Facilitated by Fr. Dan the readings appointed for the Sunday will be opened so that all who participate may place themselves in the stories of faith and be empowered to share the message of God’s love throughout the following week and beyond.

“Spiritual Day Hike” 10:45am in the Meyers

In January we will hike through some marvelous ‘wild flower’ displays: winter blooms that arrive each year as we remember Holy Women and Holy Men in the sea-son of Epiphany. These ‘blooms’ revealed the glory of God in their day and continue to delight us years (sometimes centuries) later. Using the Holy Women, Holy Men Calendar we will explore their lives (i.e., ‘blooms’) and wonder how we are to reveal the glory of God in our own day and in our own lives. Come and join the hike/conversation.

Studying the vast world of Theology as an “Armchair Theologian”The monthly book study continues on Thursday, January 10th at 1:00 p.m. In the Karns Admin. Building Library.Do you ever wonder how Christian ideas developed through the centuries? Sometimes the unlimited supply of primary documents written by Christians throughout the ages seems very daunting. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to enter the world of theological reflection in a gentle way? If you’ve always been curious about how the Christian Church formed our creeds, formed our doctrines and practices, then these book discussions are for you! This month, we welcome the Rev. Roy Seger, a retired Lutheran pastor who will guide us through the life and writings of Martin Luther. All are welcome! The schedule of dates, topics, and book titles are as follows:

January 10Luther for Armchair Theologians

February 14Calvin for Armchair Theologians

March 14John Wesley for Armchair Theologians

April 11Karl Barth for Armchair Theologians

May 9Bonhoeffer for Armchair Theologians

No pre-registration is required, but it is STRONGLY RECOM-MENDED that you order a copy and read the book before each discussion date. Come with your questions. Be ready to offer your opinion and feedback, and engage with one another . In our discussions, we will begin to gain a glimpse into the lives of these Christian theologians, and will begin to launch our own journeys of discovery into the vast and ever-broadening world of Chris-tian Theology.

Thanks in advance to many of St. Margaret’s Resident Clergy, including The Rt. Rev. Shannon Mallory, The Rev. Scott Miller, The Rev. Betsy Stillwell, and The Rev. John Tincher for their willingness to bring their expertise to many of our discussions.

If you have any questions, please contact The Rev. Troy Mendez at: 760 346 2697 ext 105 or e-mail: [email protected]

During Lent we hope to have on-line daily meditations written by members of our congregation, namely you, if you’d like to participate. The text will be your reflections on Lent, perhaps a story you have to tell from your experiences, or whatever heartfelt thoughts you have about the season of Lent.

If you are interested in writing a meditation or have questions, please call Alice Sleight at (760) 323-2399 to be assigned a day and receive appropriate scripture readings to use as your inspiration. The length of the meditation should be approximately 100-500 words.

Please join us in sharing your inspirational ideas, and call today to let me know that you would like to do it. These meditations should be done by mid-February so they can be on line by February 13 (Ash Wednesday).

Christians living in a changing world— Wednesday, January 9thIt was over 50 years ago that I was ordained. Much has changed since that afternoon when I knelt before my bishop. I doubt that anyone in the church on that day could have imagined that:

1. There would be a woman Presiding Bishop.2. Key issues for 21st century Christians would be climate change, distribution of

resources, global warming, and recycling.3. An increasing number of Americans would list their religion preference

as “none.”4. We would have a dialogue with Muslims.5. What happens in Beijing or Tokyo would influence my lifestyle.6. Every person has a personal computer on their cell phone.7. We would see a loss of respect for major institutions such as the police,

congress, the church, the federal government.8. There continues to be an increasing number of people getting regular, aerobic exercise, and eating gluten free meals & yogurt.

If you are interested in investigating how Christians see change, come to a five-session class beginning Wednesday, January 9th at 4:30 p.m., led by The Rev. Dr. Roger Douglas. We will meet in the Library.

Philip Zuckerman, Professor of Sociology and Secular Studies at Pitzer College will be the first speaker for the new series, The Forum at St. Margaret’s, on Friday evening, January 25, 2013, at 7:00 PM in the sanctuary.

Zuckerman is not a theologian, but his research, findings and commentary are creating ripples across the landscape of the institutional church and faith groups. Drawing heavily on his experience living and researching in Europe, Zuckerman’s earlier insights posited that a “wind of secularity is blowing across North America.” The American Religious Identification survey showed that the number of Americans now claiming “none” as their religion has doubled since the 1990s. The Pew Forum’s U.S. Religious Landscape survey reports a similar number of Americans as religiously “unaffiliated.” And the respected Harris poll shows that rates of atheism/agnosticism more than doubled in five years – all in religious, Christian America. Not to be outdone, Parade Magazine reported that 27% of Americans do not practice any religion and 22% said religion was “not a factor” in their lives. Bring a friend and join in the conversation. . . .

PINT SIZE P.E. with Mrs. Whittle Happy New Year! In many places, January brings snow and ice. Here in Palm Desert, we must use our imaginations. This month in PE we will be creating a winter wonderland, complete with frozen streams, snowballs and snowmen. Students will be jump-ing over frozen streams and throwing snowballs (bean bags) at snowmen. While jumping, students will be encouraged to stand with both feet firmly on the ground, swing their arms, and jump landing on two feet. This exercise requires balance and concen-tration. Students will be throwing snowballs overhanded, trying to hit a target. This exercise requires focus and good aim. Our winter wonderland is designed to be fun for the students, while instilling a sense of confidence in their physical abilities.

STORYTIME with Mrs. Miller The start of a new year finds much of the country with winter weather. Although we are blessed with milder weather, January is a good opportunity to discuss snow and cold weather with preschoolers. This fits in with our snow day where the children will be delighted to touch and play in the snow! We will also be discussing bears– bear families, bears hibernating, bear friends, and bears in the wild! Next on the agenda is transportation which includes planes, trains and automobiles! A wonderful way to teach and reinforce the alphabet and build children’s vocabulary is by reading alphabet books with children. These range from various types of animals, adjec-tives about animals, dress-up play clothes (T is for Tiara) and words that are used to describe emotions. January will be full of wonderful books to read as we enhance children’s real life experi-ences through literature.

SPANISH with Mrs. McKissicFeliz Ano Nuevo! Happy New Year! This month in Spanish we will be working on the months of the year in Espanol and in English. We will also continue to practice basic greetings like hello, good-bye, and see you later. Numbers, colors and shapes will also be learned through songs, stories and games. It will be fun to learn new words that we can use daily at home and at school.

MUSIC with Mrs. WhittleThis month the children will continue singing the “Name Game” as well as learn songs that coincide with our themes each week.

Our children at St Margaret’s Episcopal School for their wonderful performance at the Christmas program. They did such a great job and we are so proud of all of them.

All the parents who lent a helping hand with our birthday celebration for Jesus. You are always such a tremendous help and we are thankful for all you do!

All our parents who attended our Christmas Program. It’s great to see all your smiling and proud faces as you watch your children perform.

Mrs. Burch for the Christmas ornament activity she provided for the Pre-K 2 class. She did such a wonderful job creating festive ornaments with the children.

Mrs. Hernandez and Mrs. Vandenbos for bring in a treat project for the “Dozen Day” celebration. The children had a great time on 12-12-2012.

The Total Package

A New Year seems to bring thoughts of self-improvement, of new goals to accomplish, of hope that all will be well for another twelve months. Let us all pray that is so!Several years ago in the VIEW an article was presented each month entitled “Saints of St. Margaret’s” and featured folks who contributed in large and small ways to the health and good fortune of this church. Lots of people were described and of course several “saints” were missed or the feature was discon-tinued before they were show-cased.

One such person is our Librarian, Catherine Miller. I recently discovered that many in this congregation do not know that we have a really nice library with some very interesting books. Currently each Sunday a library cart has been stationed in Karns Hall, where I understand considerable interest has been

shown in checking out the books presented. However the library has way too many books to show up on the cart and besides it is always fun to browse the shelves and surprise yourself by finding something which really speaks to you. Our Librarian does a great job of cataloging and sorting these books but apparently she does this almost anonymously. I encourage you to drop by the library, especially on Wednesday mornings when Catherine will be there, although the room is open most of the time. The library is located in the Karns Administration building.

And on a more urgent health topic—flu season is here! The sea-son started especially early this year and predictions are it may be a hard one. St. Margaret’s did not do a “flu shot” clinic this year because the shots are so readily available everywhere—drug-stores, grocery stores, clinics. The CDC recommendation is that almost everyone above 6 months of age should have an annual flu shot (and if you have some outlying problem where this is not for you, I’m sure your doctor has already told you that). PLEASE! For yourself, for your family, for the rest of us, get protected. Hav-ing the flu is definitely not the way to start a hopeful 2013!
