nortunately, the so called smart HVACtomation systems that are being installed tontrol large commercial applications are notsmart. And urthermore, they have probablyd an effect on you.

you are one o the 70 to 110 or so millionople affected by the credit breach at ar-t, well than you can thank HVAC buildingntrols and their administrators. You see theminals where able to breach secure arget

rvers through their HVAC control pro-ams. Tere are not many systems available tontrol large scale operations, and whats worsethe deault password and security are ofenver secured.

nce the HVAC providers and service com-nies typically need access to these computerminals they ofen have a deault password

ey use or remote or on site access. Individ-ls much smart than mysel, knew they coulde building control sofware to gain accesssensitive materials. Such as access to every

edit/debit transaction made at arget loca-ns like in this instance.

is scenario is not isolated to just argetcations. For some time now hackers haveen able to see what programs companies

here using to control and access their HVACstems. Tey could then go out and purchases sofware or these programs on the open

arket. Tis would give them access to deaultsscodes and settings. Ones that administra-rs o these systems or buildings where notanging or updating. A system or program is

ally only as secure as the end user makes it.

make matters worse is the ease o thisormation alling into the wrong hands anding sold on the open market. Tere was a

orry or a time that this type o breach was

possible at the Pentagon. Yes the pentagonsHVAC controls where not properly secured.Unrelated directly to HVAC, but important to

note here is that it was recently revealed thedeault launch codes or this countries nukes, was 00000000 or nearly 20 years.

Te take away here is the act that our homesand business are now on the grid more thanever so to say. I can now open an app on myphone and check/change the temperature athome, or let in riends or loved ones i I amnot around. All o this connection is greatand can serve some really good purposes. Myavorite is the ability or HVAC equipment tomonitor its energy usage, as well as alert theproper people when their is an emergency. Wecan now attack problems head on or beorethey become larger issues. Also, allowing usmore inormation about what is needed orthe repair, such as motors or electrical compo-nents.

With all o this connection and great eatures,we must understand there is a risk that may beinvolved. I we are not securing our networksorm users, to permissions, to specic sof-ware, we are leaving the doors open to the

potential backlash. You need to be the NSA owhat your home wi or business networks aretalking to and what they are talking about. Wehave to take the time to understand the poten-tial risks our systems allow or and where wecan plug the holes. Good luck out there!

DOGSA DOGSWORLDWORLD I am starting to wonder at this point if myback yard will be an ice rink forever. All the snow, and rain, and melting, and freezing temperatureshas really hidden the grass for the time being. Atleast it is starting to be lighter out when we getup. Although I am told that all changes soon... Anyways, all the cold and ice has given memore time indoors with our new brother. As youcan see I enjoy when he reads me books after along day of work. Not sure what the book is aboutor how the story goes, but doesnt stop me fromenjoying it.

What Frank and I are starting to learn nowis that a nap for us on the ground can turn into

a quick and silent awakening. Jack is scootiover the house now, and likes to grab a holdour tails for a good examination. No harm ingreeting, however a little heads up he is coover would be nice.

As Jack continues to grow up right beour very eyes, he has taken a good liking toour few toys scattered about. No problem bas I would be happy to share if my parents me. They seem to think we all need separatearound the house. Oh well, more things theyto keep track of. Whelp, heres to Springs arrival, Frank are impatiently waiting...

Dogs World: Quick note from Murph

Wow, I have lived in Chicago allmy life and I do not remember a winter

older than this one. Maybe its theecency of it, or me being out in it more,ut it s about the coldest one I knowf. Sad too, because as I write this thereeems to be no relief in our immediateuture.

Te Olympics are in our reariew mirror. With one pretty poorerformance from a certain Mens

Olympic team I care to forget about. TeWomens team put up one hell of a ght,

ut it kind of fell apart for them at thend. Good to see them at least walk away

with a medal.By the time you read this some

0,000 fans will wish they would havewatched the Hockey game at Solider

ield indoor in front of an HDV. Rightwhere you will nd me Saturday, March

    .

As an airhead, which isctually a complement in our industryiche, I am always happy to solveomfort problems. When I get a niceote about our solutions working i like

o pass it along. Tis note came from

Mrs. Hill, and we couldnt be more gladwe were able to help her.

We are reminded o your companyvery ofen in the winter months. In2009 you replaced our urnace. Youre-worked some o the ductworkin the basement. I had concernsabout the changes in the duct work.om made a special trip back andexplained every thing in detail. Aferthat I elt good about making thechanges.

What a difference it has made. Our house has never been thiswarm and lower heating bills. Weused to have small space heatersin the kitchen and living room andsometime even in the amily roombecause those room were alwayscold. Now those rooms are warmand no need or space heaters. Noother company had ever suggestedchanging the duct work when we hadthe previous urnace replaced.

We are extremely happy withevery thing and always put in a goodword or your company i we hear

o someone that needs heating or

air conditioning work. We reerreour son Patrick Hill recently whos

urnace went out during a cold spHe also was pleased with the serviTank you or making our home scomortable. - Mrs. Hill
