Dear Friends:Liberty is a powerful

concept bequeathed to the world in large measure from our Biblical heritage. The majestic statement that resonates from the Book of Leviticus declares, “Proclaim Liberty throughout all

the Land unto all the inhabitants thereof.” These very words of Torah are embossed on the Liberty Bell – the symbol of American independence and freedom. Though the Liberty Bell famously has a large fissure and crack – it is a vivid symbol of the freedoms we cherish and must never take for granted.

Two images of Liberty and Freedom ring clearly as we approach the Festival of Passover which is the seismic narrative of our epic

journey from slavery to liberation. A few weeks ago I, along with 25 DHJC members traveled to Philadelphia for

a most unique reunion. Rabbi Ezra Finkelstein, in his Rabbinic career, led congregations in Whitestone and at the Midway Jewish Center in Syosset. I am also proud to call him my chaver, dear friend, mentor and part of our mishpacha. We gathered at the National Museum of American Jewish History situated on Independence Mall directly across from the pavilion that houses the Liberty Bell.

With one hundred honored guests at the first morning minyan held at that Museum, we reunited Rabbi Ezra Finkelstein with his Torah. In 1948 his father, Rabbi Louis

Finkelstein, was the Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary and the most prominent American Jewish leader of his generation. President Harry

Truman heroically recognized the State of Israel a mere eleven minutes after she became an independent nation. Overriding the advice of the State Department, Truman knew as a leader and as a student of history, that the Jewish return to national sovereignty, two thousand years after the Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed, was a seminal moment in the annals of history.

A little over a week later, Chaim Weizmann, the first President of Israel, arrived in New York hoping to thank the United States President

for recognizing the nascent state. Weizmann received a message that he was to go to Washington for a meeting with Truman. Yet, in a diplomatic faux pas, Weizmann did not have a gift for the President. So, Rabbi Louis Finkelstein was called. “You own the Jewish Museum. Can we have a menorah to gift to the American President?” Rabbi Louis Finkelstein then explained that the objects on display at the Jewish Museum were dedicated to the Museum and then he added, “…but I have a Torah that I can give to you to gift to President Truman!”

The small traveling Torah had been commissioned by Rabbi Louis Finkelstein for his son Ezra’s Bar Mitzvah which was celebrated in 1940. Headlines and banner photos went around the world when Weizmann presented the Torah to Truman – and Truman quipped “I always wanted one of these!” When the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library was established in Independence, Missouri, the “Truman” Torah became central to the exhibit as it represented a gift from a newly independent nation – Israel – to the country that gifted democracy to the world, the USA!

Fast forward, January 2020, Philadelphia, the Truman museum granted our request (an amazing thank you and shout out to Seth Lipner & Harvey Finkelstein!) and brought the Truman Torah to Philadelphia for the Bar Mitzvah boy, EIGHTY years later reuniting him with his Bar Mitzvah Torah. What a celebration, and as Rabbi Ezra Finkelstein noted at this emotional reunion “my father wanted a gift (the Torah) that was a timeless symbol of our people.” Curt Graham, the Director of the Truman Library shared that Truman “operated from deep core principles. He read the Bible…. he took it very seriously.” He quoted Harry S. Truman: “I had faith in Israel even before it was established. I knew it was based on a love of freedom, which has been the guiding star of the Jewish people since the days of Moses.” A reunion celebrated that was 80 years in the making - the powerful bonds of America and Israel and the Torah as that

quintessential symbol of liberty and freedom and a Bar Mitzvah boy and his Torah!

As we approach Pesach, every ounce of this holiday is to demonstrate that true freedom requires constant work, devotion and dedication. Our ancestors struggled to throw off the tyranny of Pharaoh and each successive generation of the Jewish people must continue their ongoing commitment to remember this struggle and forge memories and moments and celebrations that insure we remember this historic reality. In remembering, there is no sense of triumph, or vindictiveness – but in contrast, being acutely sensitive to injustices in the world and the need to combat bias, hatred and anti-Semitism in every generation.

Pesach is our banquet of making history and heritage come alive in our homes and to tell our narratives of our family and their journeys to freedom. To craft joyous and uplifting memories of our identity is our goal at each Seder and to link our families to the people of Israel in the past and the present and the brilliant future of the Jewish people. The Seder is the setting, the Haggadah is the script and this magical opportunity cannot be passed over!

We have Passover Seder workshops, Master Chef Passover cooking demonstrations and a full Passover brochure being sent to you to enhance your Seders (the Seders to be held on the evenings of Wednesday and Thursday, April 8 and 9). Freedom and liberty are the essential core of Torah and the heart of Pesach. We live by these core moral values and inculcate justice, tolerance, compassion and morality at each Seder as these majestic imperatives of Judaism come alive in the drama of each Seder. The Seder is liberty brought to life.

May your Seders be deeply meaningful, served with the aroma of Jewish joy!

Our best wishes of a sweet and richly blessed Pesach to you and your loved ones from Laura, Yael, Yair, Lev, Nadav, Aviva, Hillel, Jaclyn, Liana, Elie, Tamar, Noam and me.

Shalom, Rabbi Howard R. Buechler

“Master of the universe who reigned before any form was created. At the time when His will created all things, then as

“King” His Name was proclaimed…” (Source: The Schottenstein Edition Siddur for the Sabbath and Festivals, page 129). We say these words in Hebrew at the end of our Shabbat Services on Shabbat Morning and even most Friday Evenings.

The Adon Olam is a short piyut or poetic hymn, which was incorporated into the Shachrit

service in the 1500s, however it has been a part of the Liturgy since the 1400s. There are several authors credited with composing the Adon Olam including Solomon ibn Gabirol, Rav Sherirah Gaon, and Rav Hai Gaon to name a few. Adon Olam initially was used as an introduction to the morning service and also as a closing prayer. In the Moroccan tradition it was used as a wedding song. Not only chanted at weddings and services, Adon Olam has also been recited prior to going to sleep and even chanted at deathbeds.

“The hymn glorifies the supremacy of G-d, His omnipotence, and His providence.” (Source: The Encyclopedia of Jewish Prayer by Macy Nulman, Page 7.)There are a variety of different versions of Adon Olam. For example, the Ashkenaz version has 10 lines or 6 stanzas, while a Sephardic version has 14 lines or 7 stanzas. Both versions focus on the same themes of the Eternal and our faith in the providence of G-d. Other lines connect us to the Psalms in different ways. “Adon Olam references some of the most famous lines in Psalm 23. Where the Psalm says, ‘I fear no evil for You are with me,’ Adon Olam repeats, ‘G-d is with me, I have no fear.’ Where the psalmist exalts that ‘my cup runneth over’ Adon Olam refers to G-d as ‘my cup of life.’”(Source: Adon Olam A Short Hymn that Summarizes the Jewish Understanding of G-d, https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/adon-olam/)

The opening word, Adon means Master or L-rd which was first spoken by Avrahamin B’reishit Chapter 15 Verse 2, “But Abram said, ‘O L-rd G-d, what can You give me...’” (Source: EtzHayim Torah and Commentary, Page 82). In this section Avraham is reminded that he remains childless, even though he was promised that his children shall inherit the land that he sees, then who but Eliezer, his servant, should inherit all his wealth. It is at that point that G-d once again re-affirms his promise to Avraham, thus re-affirming Avraham’s faith and trust.

Next to the Sh’ma, the Adon Olam is one of the most well-known and beloved prayers. Due to the nature of the piyut it can be sung to almost any melody. To name a few more popular tunes - Gilligan’s Island, Yankee Doodle, Take Me Out to the Ball Game, Frozen, Broadway Songs, Yiddish Songs, Patriotic Songs, Beatles songs, Operas and so many others. What is your favorite tune for Adon Olam? When we have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, many times family members will join together on the Bima and lead the Congregation in Adon Olam. When there is no Bar or Bat Mitzvah, many times students from our Religious School will join us on the Bima and lead our DHJC Community in Adon Olam.

As we join together and sing the various melodies, let us take some time to ruminate upon the meaning of the words and how they can connect us, not only to each other, but also to our faith in G-d. I look forward to seeing you in shul and at our DHJC gala. And keep an eye out for more information about our next Cantor’s Concert on Thursday evening May 21, 2020. Cantor Steven Hevenstone

From our President

I was at the synagogue on Super Bowl Sunday, not to play a quick pick-up game in the parking lot, but rather to spend time at the multiple events that were held that day. Also, the parking lot was full so throwing a football around was not an option. Our Cantor uses the

phrase “L’dor V’dor - From Generation to

Generation,” when he speaks and teaches. On that Super Bowl Sunday, our building was an amazing example of “L’dor V’dor” as congregants of all ages, families and interests were scattered throughout the building for programs and meetings.I joined in morning minyan as part of the World

Wide Wrap, which was sponsored by Men’s Club, with multiple generations participating. Our minyan chapel was at capacity as parents, grandparents and our minyanaires assisted our children in putting on tefillin and joining as a holy community in prayer. What a wonderful DHJC moment for myself and all those in attendance. Of course, a nice bagel breakfast was served by the Men’s Club who then had a planning meeting. The Men’s Club and Sisterhood are vital arms of the synagogue. Not only do they run wonderful programs during the year, they are also very generous in supporting the synagogue. Thank you for all that you do.From the World Wide Wrap, I visited with the Social

Action Committee who had a meeting and a speaker on the current climate crisis. Then, I dropped by the Religious School DaF program where students and their parents participated in a play about TuB’shevat.Just on that one day, there were well over 100 people in

the building sharing multiple DHJC moments. Here at

our DHJC, moments happen practically every day. We have many wonderful opportunities for DHJC

moments, with one in particular that I want to share with you. We are excited that Colbeh has joined our catering

panel. Literally, within days of my sharing this with the congregation in December, several of our families have and are in the process of contracting their celebration with them. We already have had two shabbat dinners for B’nai Mitzvah families and Saturday evening parties scheduled. It is refreshing to hear from our member families their desire to use our beautiful synagogue and spaces for their celebrations. The recent trends had families finding offsite locations, so it’s great news to see this tradition returning to our synagogue. I welcome you to read the article in this edition of The Scroll by our member Bart Ayres, who just booked his second B’nai Mitzvah party here at DHJC (see page 34). We have a great buzz about our location for

catered affairs from small private Kiddushes to a full congregational Kiddush, from a Friday night dinner, to a Saturday evening or Sunday extravaganza. Our DHJC is a premier location for you, your family, your friends and your business catering opportunities. I hope you will bring the party back home, to DHJC.As of this writing we are looking forward to our

upcoming Gala, which will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase our new caterer, Colbeh. We look forward to their meticulous presentation, the diversity of their menu across all cuisines and their detail in providing stellar service.” I again welcome you to share your DHJC moments

with me at [email protected]. I hope to share these in my next and final article as President.Wishing everyone a festive Purim and a Zissen Pesach!

From Our Executive DirectorAs you are reading this, we are all

thinking about Passover. Yes, I know, even before Purim we are thinking about Passover. So much preparing to do, food to cook, wine to buy from our Hazak Wine sale and afikoman gifts to buy from our Sisterhood. I know, I threw in a few plugs for the synagogue. I am

the Executive Director, so I am always thinking about ways to support our congregation.I hope you have had a chance to view our new website,

dhjc.org. A big thank you to our Board of Trustees member, Joe Fingerman, who shepherded this project along. Our new site has been streamlined and is more visually appealing for our congregants and community. While checking out the new website, take a look at our new “Giving” page where we have a full menu of dedicatory and donation opportunities available. While dues cover a significant part of our operations, the Kol Nidre campaign, our Gala, and those generous donations and dedicatory gifts play an important role in enabling us to provide the robust programming and activities we are recognized for. In addition, I welcome you to reach out about legacy

giving. These commitments help to ensure the future of

our congregation while providing a living memorial to the donor and their family. There will be more information coming out shortly about our “Legacy Leaders Society” but there is no reason to wait. I look forward to speaking with you.I have written about this before and I know it is not

an easy topic for some; preparing for a loss of a family member or loved one. That said, one of the many benefits of membership is access to purchase cemetery plots in our sections in New Montefiore and Wellwood Cemeteries. Many people have come to my office and have said, “I have been putting this off. I did not want to think about it,” and after our meeting have felt relieved that this purchase of real estate for future, future use has been taken care of. We are fortunate to have a large selection of plots that are

priced substantially lower than purchasing on your own directly from the cemetery. I encourage you to reach out to me and explore the options available to you. We will make it as easy and painless as possible. Ok, where did I start? How many guests are coming to

seder? Do I need to buy two, 5lb. boxes of Matzah? Red, White or Rosé? Should I cook my brisket now and freeze it or in April? Ah, Passover! Here we go! – Ed Ward

To all of our Sisterhood friends, past, present and future:We had another successful Mah Jongg

Tournament in January with 108 players and so many helpful volunteers. Proceeds are divided between Sisterhood and Social Action. Our next tournament is scheduled for March 29th. Come and play or volunteer to help.We shared a lovely TuB’Shevat seder with the

residents at Fay Lindner. There was a nice turn out of Sisterhood members and teens (who are always a big hit whenever they go to Gurwin). Thank you to Karen Fleishman for coordinating this yearly event. We also held a game night in February that all enjoyed! We played old and new games, laughed a lot, and offered a Mah Jongg lesson for anyone interested in the game. There’s still time to sign up for our March 19th “Play It Forward”

fundraiser at the Argyle Theatre in Babylon. $65 will get you a discounted ticket to see “Cabaret” with your Dix Hills and South Huntington Jewish Center friends. Please feel free to bring anyone to see the show; each ticket we sell will bring funds to the Sisterhood and the DHJC.In April, we are planning a return visit from our favorite gardening guru

for another “Pay it Forward Planting Event.” This year we will learn about how to grow a great vegetable garden and will also pot plants to donate to Gurwin for a Mother’s Day celebration. We are considering another fun, fundraising event with South Huntington’s Sisterhood in May, details to follow. We hope you can join us for Misterhood Shabbat also in May.Please keep in mind that the Sisterhood boutique is available for Judaica

as well as Purim and Passover items. Email us at [email protected] or contact Vicki Weinstein if you’d like to shop. For Torah Fund cards or the very special 5780 Torah Fund pin, please come to any meeting or contact Amy Mintz at (631) 807-9634. Keep in contact with us by email at [email protected]. Or, if you prefer, call the DHJC office and leave a message and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible. We’d like Sisterhood to remain as vibrant and successful as it’s

been but WE NEED YOUR HELP! Please consider joining our board to work with us towards a great future. Without your help, Sisterhood might not continue to hold monthly programming and events after this spring. If you’d like more information, please contact me at (917) 864-0703.Chag Purim and Zissen Pesach to all, Debbie Zimmerman

My thanks to all those who attended the World Wide Wrap and stayed for breakfast and our Men’s Club meeting (more on this after). It was a great start to what turned out to be a

thrilling Super Bowl Sunday. Thanks as always to Allan Mintz for spearheading this, as well as the

Rabbi, Cantor, Minyan-aires and Zayin students. Next up for Men’s Club is:

OUR ANNUAL SPORTS BRUNCH ON SUNDAY MARCH 15, STARTING AT 11AM

If you don’t know by now, our guest speaker is former Knick great and bonafide basketball legend, Larry Johnson! I hope to

see ALL of you there as this will be an amazing day!So, as I mentioned earlier, we had a Men’s Club meeting on

February 2nd and it was rather important as we discussed some of the challenges facing not only our club, but Men’s Clubs in general. Essentially, the current model, as we have it, needs to adapt if we are to remain relevant and vibrant for ourselves and to the next generation of members. I will have more on this in the coming weeks. Until then, thanks to all of you who participate and help to make Men’s Club great!

Best,Mark Weinstein Men’s Club President

Volunteering on an Israeli army Base by Helen Suchow

Many of you have taken wonderful trips to Israel and have been on great tours, especially with Rabbi Buechler. However, I want to tell you a little about a totally different, hands-on experience, where you become a volunteer on an Israeli Army Base! It is a program called, Sar-El, Volunteers for Israel.

Sar-El is a personal investment in Israel with your hands and your heart. This inspiring program allows you to be up close and personal with soldiers, and with other people from all over the world who are devoted to Israel! Your activities on the base might include packing medical supplies, lining helmets, painting, working in a factory,

etc. My group worked on the battery cases that were fitted into the tanks. We felt very connected to the soldiers, and that the job we were doing would help them in the field!

Aside from working each day, you have all your meals with the soldiers and have a chance to interact

with these wonderful young people. In my case, there were 15 volunteers. There were people from France, Poland, Canada, Australia and the United States. All had interesting and diverse backgrounds, but one common goal, our Love for Israel!!! There were many highlights, but raising the Israeli Flag with the soldiers, and singing Hatikvah, brought tears to our eyes!

A session on the base can be one, two, or three weeks and is from Sunday to Thursday. You are off-base for Shabbat. Many of us stayed with family or at hotels. All food on the base is Kosher and there are synagogues for daily services.

I have included some pictures of our group, “The Magnificent 15,” named by Jean, our French friend. I would love to talk to anyone interested in the program, which I am doing again in April.

Social actionCAN: Community Answering Needs We CAN accomplish anything together! Thank you!

The mission of the DHJC Social Action Committee is to act in ways that empower others and treat them with respect, and to recognize that Tikkun Olam, Repairing the World, is an integral part of our Jewish heritage. The Social Action Committee of the DHJC works toward creating a more caring community and demonstrates the impact that we can have on our world.

Our Social Action Committee CAN answer needs that are within our congregation, our local community, the greater community, and in Israel.

We CAN work for a clean and healthy environment. March 22, 2020 – 9:30am – 12:30pmTema Leviter came to our Social Action Committee and asked – What CAN we do about the climate crisis? We worked together thinking about how we CAN answer that question, and started with an introductory session in February on the New York State Climate and Community Protection Act where we learned from Ryan Madden, of the Long Island Progressive Coalition, about how we CAN begin to plan our community’s steps in working towards clean, renewable energy projects. On March 22 we will map out what we, as the Dix Hills Jewish Center community CAN do, and participate! Please come!!Tema Leviter tells us: As Jews, we are commanded to be stewards of the earth.Wildfires! Once-in-a-century floods! Devastating storms! Are we referring to the 10 plagues? Unfortunately, we are not.Events such as these are becoming more commonplace every day.Climate change is real, it’s happening on Long Island, and you CAN be part of the solution. The DHJC Social Action Committee is partnering with the Long Island Progressive Coalition to work together to implement the newly passed New York State Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, the boldest climate law in the country, that assists community organizations in ways that they CAN participate in this important movement.Join us on Sunday morning, March 22, from 9:30 to 12:30 - when we participate in a workshop that will start our synagogue on the path towards becoming more conscious of our sustainability footprint. The entire congregation is invited - adults, teens, kids!We hope to see you there – your water, your

air, your beaches, your children and grandchildren - they are all depending on you!We CAN help our neighbors learn English: The Opening WordAlice Fossner tells us about her volunteer work – you CAN volunteer, too!Like most of you, I often get sad and upset when I hear and read bad, negative news. Sometimes it feels like it’s “doom and gloom” all around me. But then, once a week I go to OPENING WORD and like magic, my spirits are lifted up! OPENING WORD is a literacy program that teaches the English language to immigrant women. It actually does a lot more than just teach language skills - it provides job readiness, prepares eligible students for citizenship, helps with health literacy, and parenting. Since the women come from many different countries and different backgrounds, this is also a wonderful “melting together” place. Some volunteer teachers have been coming there for many years. Four of us from DHJC have been teaching at the Wyandanch location for a few years and we feel that we get back so much! On January10, 2020 the students at Wyandanch gathered to celebrate the New Year, to share their diverse holiday customs and to express their gratitude with songs and homemade food. So much joy, such a spirit of generosity and kindness was enveloping all of us there. When I was leaving, I was literally on cloud nine! You, too, CAN share such good feelings. Contact DHJC Social Action Committee if you are interested. You will be glad you did! Volunteer locations are in Wyandanch, Huntington Station, and Amityville.Thank you to our volunteers: Alice Fossner, Ann Heller, Lisa Mintz, and Steve Steinig!!We CAN help feed the poor and those who are food insecure on Long Island: SOUPER SUNDAY!Thank you for your food donations leading up to the Super Bowl – our SOUPER Sunday!! With the assistance of Stacey Feldman, a member of the DHJC, and Associate Executive Director of the Marion & Aaron Gural JCC, the food was donated to The Rina Shkolnik Kosher Food Pantry.

We CAN assist the residents and staff at Gurwin Nursing Home.Shelley Borman organized what has become our annual Christmas Day volunteering opportunity at Gurwin Nursing Home where we assist with transporting and interacting with residents for a game of Bingo. The residents enjoyed the day! Thank you to our volunteers: Shelley and Steve Borman, Janet and Jay Gewirtzman, Alice and Gene Fossner and Paula Saltzman. The Early childhood academy Dear Families,

The ECA continues to be an environment enriched with love, acceptance, learning and encouragement.

Many thanks to pediatric dentist, Dr. Celia! She taught us all about dental hygiene and that

we do not have to be afraid of the dentist. Many of the children remembered her from last year and those meeting her for the first time loved her magic tricks and huge toothbrush!

We had a wonderful Tu B’shevat celebration with our families where we enjoyed a delicious feast of various fruits. The children learned so much about the Birthday of the Trees, nature, different types of tree fruits and conservation through stories, songs and art. They planted parsley seeds in their own little pots to take home.

With March coming, the ECA is looking forward to Purim. Making hamantaschen, shalach manot baskets and dressing up in costumes are just a few of the highlights of this holiday. Thank you to the Rabbi and his wonderful story of the megillah and Cantor for teaching us through music.

Our sincere thanks to the DHJC Family Life Committee for agreeing to help fund our “Garden of Learning.” We will begin working on this in the spring and we welcome any and all volunteers to help us build this. Our students will be an integral part of the garden. They will be planting, maintaining it and reaping its benefits. We will use our new garden to grow fruit and vegetables to be used for snacks and holidays. This will be a year-round learning experience.

Youth Group UpdateAside from the regular meetings for Maccabees,

Kadima, & USY, March and April are highlighted by some holiday events.

First, on March 9th, DHJC has our Purim Carnival. If any USY’ers (or friends) want to volunteer at the carnival, let me know, and of course I will be happy to sign any paperwork for hours if needed.

Later in the month, each group will have their own, ever-popular and always a favorite, “Chocolate Seder.” If you like chocolate, you don’t want to miss this. I promise everyone who attends will have a “Sweet” time.

USY, in April, get ready for the Divisional Elections on the 5th, and Regional Convention the weekend of 4/24 – 4/26.

Remember, it’s never too late to join the fun. If you or someone you know isn’t a DHJC Youth group member and fall within the ages of one of our groups, mid-year rates are now being offered.

Maccabees (3rd- 5th grade), Kadima (6th & 7th grade) and USY (8th – 12th grade)

If you have any questions about how to join, any of the events, or our youth group program in general, please feel free to contact me so you don’t miss out on all the fun!

My Dear Congregants,We are very busy here at the Hebrew

school. Each class is working on another topic or project. The Primary grades are preparing for their Kabbalat Shabbat and already know a few blessings and Shabbat prayers. The Gimel class had their Havdalah service at the end of February and are now practicing for their Friday Night service, which is their

Kabbalat ha’Siddur as well. The Dalet & Hay classes had their Havdalah services as well, and are now working on their Friday Night service. Our sixth graders led the Shabbat morning service and

are reviewing for their Friday night service. This is good preparation for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah. And our seventh graders had their Shabbat morning service. I am sure that, for the children, it was a great review for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah day. All of the students are very involved with their Tzedakah projects, and hopefully they will adopt one of them for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah Tzedakah project. Kitah Zayin students and parents were invited to

Woodbury Jewish Center to see the show, “From the Fires.” It’s an amazing production about the Holocaust, and you should see it when you have a chance. Tikkun Olam was and is a very important component in

our school. An ongoing Tikkun Olam project, which is already in its FOURTH year, is a Kabbalat Shabbat Service at Sunrise Assisted Living. Each class leads the service twice a year with the residents of Sunrise Assisted Living in Dix Hills. The children and the residents are having a

beautiful time together. This is one of the ways to teach the children how rewarding “Giving” is.Below is a short summary from one of our Vav students

about his class’s Tikkun Olam project: “I was immediately excited when I learned about the

mitzvah project my class was going to help with. The Ronald McDonald House is such a wonderful place for children who are sick and their families. They don’t always have all the food and supplies they need. I came home that day and told my mom we must go to the store and load up on all of the things that they need. We got everything from macaroni and cheese and cereal bars to paper plates and cleaning supplies. I even brought them my favorite – Ramen noodles.I continue to bring in more food and supplies each week

because I know they will continue to need it at the Ronald McDonald House. I don’t want the children or their families to worry about basic needs like that. I am so happy I get to help them, even if it is a little bit. I know every little bit counts.I hope I can continue to help provide food and supplies to

the Ronald McDonald House. I hope I can get my friends and classmates to also bring in as much as they are able so that we make the lives of these children and families brighter and better.” – Andrew FuchsCongratulations to Pauline Schwartz, our wonderful

Hebrew school supporter, who was honored as a lay leader by the JEA (Jewish Educational Assembly).

Why We Booked the DHJc again! By Bart Ayres

When my wife, Nicole, and I first came over to the Dix Hills Jewish Center, one of our first concerns was whether our son Josh’s Bar Mitzvah date, which we had from our previous temple, was available. It was not, so that led us to our other options; switch the date or go with the other choice, something we had not even considered before, an evening Havdalah service.

We chose the Havdalah service and the rest is history. When we chose the Havdalah service, we understood that our party would have to be held in the ballroom of the DHJC. We’ve been in the ballroom many times, but we had never been to a big party there, so we weren’t quite sure if it would work.

We spoke to the caterer, DJ company, and the decorator and they were all amazing. Before we knew it, things were coming together. We decorated with a “Josh Did It” Nike theme as well as adorning the room with all sorts of football, baseball, and basketball themed decorations. His logo and pictures were everywhere and, without a doubt, the DHJC ballroom was completely transformed. Our initial concerns gave way to excitement and pure joy with how things worked out.

After the most beautiful Havdalah service, our guests immediately entered the cocktail hour, which was held in the lobby, garden room, and bar room (with the wall closed). The sushi, roving cocktails, and many stations made the cocktail hour unforgettable. The bar room was filled with lots of games and food for the kids and everyone had the best time.

And then the party really started. The wall was opened and the entire ballroom looked amazing. The food was fabulous, the decorations were perfect, and our guests danced the night away.

A testament to how great the party was is that here we are, one year later, planning our daughter’s Bat Mitzvah, and without even considering any other options, we are ready to do it all over again at the Dix Hills Jewish Center. With a new caterer, Colbeh, ready to go, we couldn’t be more excited to transform this room once more. Pejman, from Colbeh, has been wonderful to work with and we are confident that our daughter’s party, while themed differently, with a different caterer, will be just as wonderful.

I can’t rave enough about the Havdalah service. If you haven’t been to one, you should go. It’s beautiful; and as far as having your affair right after the service, it is very convenient for you and your guests. There is no wait between, no buses to worry about; just exit the service and let the party begin! If you are planning a party, don’t think twice about it – call Colbeh and book the DHJC. You won’t be sorry.
