Investing In Minnesota's Energy Future

by Colette Jurek, Xcel Energy Manager of Community Relations

Because we are literally connected to the communities we

serve, Xcel Energy works hard to ensure those communities

are strong and healthy. Like the state's roads, highways and water systems, Minnesota's electric system needs to be main-

tained to continue to provide the same level of service residents and businesses have come to expect. To that end, we have

been investing over $1 billion per year in our power plants, poles and wires to ensure that we deliver on this commitment to our

1.2 million customers in Minnesota.

In November, we filed an electric rate case requesting an increase in rates with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission.

Our request is primarily driven by investments to provide an additional 20 years of operation at our two nuclear energy plants

in Minnesota which offer low-cost, environmentally-sound energy for the future. It also includes investments in the electricity

grid, much of which was built more than 50 years ago. While the application is being evaluated this year, interim rates were

approved by the MPUC and went into effect on Jan. 1, 2013 – about $8 per month (or 26 cents per day) for a typical residential

customer. If the MPUC approves final base rates that are lower than interim rates we will refund customers the difference with

interest.

Even with the proposed rate increase, our rates will remain competitive. As part of the filing, we are also proposing ways to

help encourage efficient business growth and jobs in Minnesota.

Nonetheless, we understand the impact of this proposed increase on our customers, and we offer an extensive suite of energy

conservation programs to help manage and lower bills. Customers can reduce their individual costs by participating in these

successful programs.

If you would like to learn more about the rate filing, please visit our website at www.xcelenergy.com/xcelmnrates.

Martin Brower Fridley Achieves ISO 14001 Certification

Global quick-service distributor -- Martin Brower

utilizes environmental management system in pursuit of zero waste

Rosemont, IL – January 17, 2013: The Martin-Brower Company, L.L.C. is proud to announce that its Fridley, Minnesota distribution center has achieved ISO

14001 certification. The Fridley operation is the 6th US Martin Brower operation to be ISO 14001 certified demonstrating Martin Brower’s environmental

stewardship.

Brian Hancock, President, Martin Brower North America, said, “Sustainability is high on our priorities at Martin Brower. All of our operations are required

to follow Martin Brower’s environmental management system, which enables us to reduce the carbon footprint of the products we deliver while simulta-

neously reducing both our costs and our impact on the environment. The ISO 14001 external audits ensure we are measuring our progress and keep us

on task to continuously deliver greater reductions in green house gas emissions.”

The company wide environmental management system has allowed Martin Brower to identify waste reduction opportunities and energy efficiency

measures to reach its goals of zero waste and continuous green house gas emission reductions.

“Martin Brower has taken the industry lead in best environmental practice,” comments Cem Onus, of DEKRA Certification, Inc. By adopting environmen-

tal standards, companies like Martin Brower will gain competitive advantage and protect the brands of the product they distribute, since consumers in-

creasingly demand the highest ethical standards in an age of rising raw material prices and concern for the environment. We encourage all supply chain

operations to become ISO 14001 certified.”

Martin Brower Fridley General Manager, Jay Gutierrez, said, “The external audits and continuous improvement aspects of ISO 14001 assisted me in

driving Martin Brower’s environmental management system into all aspects of our operations. It’s been a tremendous tool to harness the enthusiasm by

the entire team in meeting our sustainability efforts and the certification confirms our progress.”
