Mary’s Message

Goodness, February was a short month! But the days are getting longer and flowers are thinking of blooming.

I completed weaving my bright warp and am working on the final finishing. I look forward to seeing all of your colorful creations at the May luncheon!

At this time of the year, the RMWG is looking for volunteers for the Board and for Committees for the 2017-2018 guild year. It is a great way to get to know how the guild works and to get to know other members. If fact, it is the only way that the Guild functions, it is all through people like you who want to know more about fiber arts.

Are you looking to go to a fiber related workshop later this year? Be sure to apply for a guild scholarship.

In March, Galina Khmelev, will speak on Gossamer Webs: Knitted Orenburg Lace; and in April, Eileen Hallman’s program is Weave until you Dye. Then we end the year in May with a luncheon and fashion show.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: March 2017 Circulating Library Update It's That Time Again -- Bring 'Em Back! Hi Everyone. It's that time again. If you still have library material out from the fall, early winter, or before, please return it in March. In other words, if you checked out library material in February 2017 or before, bring it back. If you can't come to meeting, notify Judy McDaniel, librarian, or Dale Zitek, Check-out/Check-in. Thanks in advance. Also, we will again have books, magazines, etc. for sale, at very reasonable prices. This sales revenue allows us to add some of the material you said you wanted us to have in the circulating library. So don't be shy. Come on back and help us add that material to the collection. Seeing you in March! from the Circulating Library Committee

Hospitality Team! We have an outstanding group of members on the hospitality team, but we would like to have more! Our relatively small, loyal crew come early for every RMWG meeting to bring supplies and equipment from storage, get water heating for tea, coffee brewing, a serving area ready for snacks, tables in place where needed, and the audio-visual equipment ready for the meeting. Afterwards, we clean up the area and put all the equipment and supplies back away.

Many thanks to these people who help to make your guild meeting run smoothly and bring pleasure to all! However, even these members occasionally need to miss a guild meeting, leaving even fewer of us to get preparations and clean-up for the meeting completed. So, won’t YOU please consider helping us out as you are able?

Come a little early before the meeting starts, and/or stay a little late afterward, and be part of a friendly team!

ANNOUNCEMENTS CONT’D

Weaving for Fun and Profit Even if you haven’t considered selling your hand woven, knit, dyed silks, etc. it can be very rewarding. Pride in what you create and knowing that others enjoy your skills can be very uplifting. Even a few dollars earned helps pay for more yarn and materials to work with. I’m inviting each and every one of our members to give it a try and joining us as a participant in this year’s Fiber Arts Sale.

All of the information that you need to participate is conveniently located on the RMWG website. We will have a few copies of these instructions available for those of you who don’t feel computer literate at the March meeting.

It is essential that all inventory for the sale be turned in as both a paper copy and on a computer thumb drive or CD. This eliminates the need for staff to manually input your information into our database during the sale. It also gives us a more accurate cross check of items at checkout time and when we are writing checks.

The sale committee has also decided to provide computer assistance two weeks before the sale for anyone needing their inventory put on either a thumb drive or a CD. We will provide contact information at a time closer to the sale.

FUN also abounds at the sale giving you the chance to meet and visit with other members and our customers. Knowing what they are interested in buying helps you determine what to make for the next sale. Please consider joining us this year and I’ll bet you’ll do it again. Watch the newsletter for monthly articles related to the sale.

BUILDING USE… Everyone has been great about letting us know when you want to use the building. Remember the library and storeroom are shared spaces. Please do not bring additional furniture or boxes, etc. into either of the spaces unless it has been cleared with Annie Scherer or Bev Kajko the building use coordinators. If you use the rooms, please be very careful not to leave any food type of trash behind. We don’t want to encourage “church mice.” THANKS! Bev and Annie

HATS AND MITTENS AND SCARVES OH MY!!

Once again, thanks to all that produced wonderful handmade hats, scarves and mittens. Whomever made all the great striped caps, thank you...they were great and so many! There was also a matching hat and mitten set made by Pat Sandt from all leftover bits and pieces...what a great way to use all those leftovers!! They were beautiful. Thanks! Keep on knitting and crocheting and watching out for end of season bargains. We are continuing this easy and wonderful outreach project throughout the year. Remember, there is lots of yarn in the blue bins for this project. Thank you all, Annie Scherer

Door Prizes for the May luncheon. Anyone interested in donating a door prize for the May luncheon, please contact Judy Lepthien or Annie Scherer. It doesn't have to be big or expensive, just the more we have, the more we can give away. Clean out your stash, purchase a candle or a coffee/lunch gift card, or find an original fun what-not!!! Waiting to hear from you. Annie and Judy.

IWC Raffle Basket and Other Donations: There is a black box out to the right as you come out of the kitchen for nice donations of items to put in a raffle basket for IWC and other requests that may come along. If you have some nice yarn left from a project and don’t have a purpose for the rest of it, this would be a good place to put it. IWC is in July if we continue to collect we might have enough for more than one basket or raffle item. These baskets are sometimes themed based, or just a mix and match. They should be a representation of our Guild and be filled with quality items. We do have other occasions to donate items to silent actions, etc. so they could be left there also. If you have any questions, contact Bev Kajko at [email protected].

May 2017 Luncheon: Dhaka Weaves Trunk Show to Benefit the Weavers of Dhaka in Nepal.

Tewa means “support” in Nepali. Tewa Teas support Dhaka Weaves, a textile company devoted to women creating a culture of self-reliance. Nepali women inherited an age-old tradition of rare hand-woven textile creation and remarkable quality craftsmanship. These exquisite textiles find great appreciation throughout our global world. Tewa Teas are archways yielding tangible results to promote both social responsibility and to encourage women’s economic engagement. Dhaka Weaves, founded in 1991, is devoted to preserving traditional Nepali weaving. Most women weavers are from remote villages, disabled, abused, or economically under-privileged. Skill training is integrated at Dhaka Weaves to inculcate confidence. By building self-esteem, learning an ethereal folkloric craft, and diligently improving skills, a woman can earn an income and embrace a better standard of living for her family. For more than 10 years Nepal has experienced destabilization, yet Dhaka Weaves has steadily employed women weavers, created a welcoming work environment and produced international standard textiles. Dhaka Weaves assists women by upgrading skills with periodic technical trainings, offering professional guidance and counseling, linking entrepreneurs to local retail markets, providing seminars, workshops and trade fairs, and locating global market niches for these natural, hand-woven, brilliantly colored, exquisitely designed textiles.

Notes from the Dye Garden

The 2017 Janice ford Memorial Dye Garden will be growing a third variety of Marigold this year – Tagestes lucida. It is a plant native to Mexico and Central America and is also known as Mexican marigold, Mexican tarragon, and sweetscented marigold. It is a lovely plant growing up to 2 feet high and 12-15 inches wide with bright green foliage reaching 3 inches long. It blooms lightly in late spring and then heavily in early fall with bright yellow ½ inch blooms held in clusters atop the foliage. The entire plant is used for dyeing to obtain a yellow color.

The leaves have an anise-like flavor that serves as a substitute for French tarragon in warm, humid climates.

Town of Elizabeth, Colorado - Arts Market Study

The Town of Elizabeth is a community of approximately 1,500 people just east of Castle Rock. The community has strong ties to the arts and has been working with Artspace to evaluate the development of live-work affordable housing for artists and other creative trades, along with some community space that can serve for art classes or gathering space. In order to better understand the demand for this type of housing and space we are gathering input from artists and creative folks from Denver to Colorado Springs. Please take a few minutes to complete our survey by going to ElizabethArtSurvey.org. The survey is open until April 5th, and we are hoping to gather a lot of responses so feel free to pass this information on to other artists and creative friends.

To keep tabs on the project or other Elizabeth Public Art Committee events, follow us on Facebook. Just search Elizabeth Public Art Committee. If you have questions or would like some additional information, please feel free to contact [email protected].

Study Groups Rookies Out of Bounds– A group comprised of weavers from a variety of levels, from beginner to advanced. We meet the first Wednesday evening of each month at Spirit of Hope United Methodist Church, 3885 South Broadway. We set up a study/challenge each year to expand our knowledge of weaving. For more info, contact Bev Kajko at 303-916-9613 or Annie Scherer at [email protected].

Dances with Wool – A free hand spinning study group that focuses on hand spinning, skills using common or exotic fibers, handling and processing fiber including carding wool, making rolags or top, felting wool, along with using a picker and/ and drum carder. Tools are available free during gatherings and may be rented by Guild members between gatherings for a small fee. We gather on the 2nd and 4th Saturday [‘The Second Dance’] of each month from 9:00 till 1:00 P.M. During most months, on the 4th Sat., we present a free 50-minute mini workshop on hand spinning or other fiber related topic. We welcome all hand spinners regardless of their hand spinning skills. We gather at the Faith Community Center at 4356 South Broadway, Englewood, CO 80113. This is one building, a double store front, on the East side of the street. Please bring your wheel or spindle, a snack to share and a beverage for yourself and spend an enjoyable and interesting morning with a gathering of dedicated hand spinners. For more information, please contact Chris Perlmutter or Bev Kajko at [email protected]. Our web page is www.danceswithwool.org.

Eight and Beyond The group meets at 10:30 A.M. in the guild space at the church on the 3rd Thursday of even numbered months (Dec, Feb, etc.) We started a new topic with our February 2017 meeting but we will continue to take new members at our April meeting. The new topic is tied weaves and we will be using Doramay Keasbey’s Pattern Techniques for Handweavers as a study guide If you are interested in joining or have any questions, please contact Sally Kuhn at 8- [email protected].

Not Necessarily 8 Shaft–. NN8S is a small group of weavers that focuses on studying weaving structures. Sometimes we “weave” on computers; sometimes we prepare actual woven samples. One or two folks will present a weaving structure information/discussion for each meeting. Often we follow a specific book. Sometimes we jump into a structure using many books. Most members have 8 shaft looms (or beyond), but all presentations include weaving with 3,4 shaft looms and rigid heddle looms too. This year we will be studying Bateman weaves. Members will need the following: 1. A laptop computer complete with weaving program. Most of us use Fiber Works, but any will do. 2. Copy of the reference book, Bateman Weaves, The Missing Monograph by Linda Tilson Davis (easily obtained from Amazon). Bateman Blend Weaves by Virginia Harvey might add to one’s knowledge. Please read through page 10 in the Tilson-Davis book to become familiar with the structure of this weave before the next meeting. 3. Use of an 8 shaft (or more shafts) loom.

We meet every other month beginning in January on the 4th Tuesday of the month from 2-4:00 in the afternoon. We meet at Zook’s Coffee shop/ Denver Puppet Theater located at 3156 W 38th Avenue in the Denver Highlands. New members are always welcome. Please join us. Need more information call Annie Zook at 303-458-6446.

The Jock Knitting Study Group is open to knitters of all experience levels and meets the 1st Thursdays of each month from 1:00 to 3:00 at the office of Great Notion Support Services, 8 East 1st Avenue, #102, Denver (corner of 1st and Broadway), and after the monthly RMWG the 3rd Saturday of the month. Our goal is to assist, encourage and challenge one another while exploring different styles of knitting. We anticipate concentrating on knitting lace in the first instance, and will take up other topics as chosen by the membership. Email [email protected] to join or for more information

Study Groups continued on page 10.

Study Groups (continued)

Silk Painting Study Group - The Silk Painting study group meets monthly to discuss silk painting methods and materials, share our knowledge, and encourage each other in our endeavors. We enjoy the beauty of silk, its many textures, and its interaction with dyes, paints, and other materials. Our meetings will generally take place the third Saturday of the month at RMWG after the guild meeting; however, meetings will occasionally be held at members' homes instead of or in addition to the normal monthly study group meeting. Meeting dates can be found in the RMWG calendar. RMWG membership is required. Silk Painters International (SPIN) membership is not required, but is encouraged. Krokbragd A few months ago, I did mug rug samples

of Krokbragd for our study group - Not Necessarily 8 Shafts. We were looking at three shaft weaves, that month. Many weaves can be done on 3 shafts: twill, rose path, M&O, huck, Swedish lace, honeycomb, summer & winter, and more.1 I used a pattern from Handwoven magazine.2

Krokbragd, meaning “crooked path,” is Scandinavian boundweave. Used for rugs and to cover doorways from the cold, it is a thick, sturdy, weft-faced fabric from Norway, which uses a 3 shaft, 2/1 point twill draft. Weft color shows over the warp threads that are not raised, completely covering the warp. The treadling never changes- only the color order. Three rows of weaving equal one pattern row. This can be done on a rigid heddle loom.

Sample Weaving Sheet for RMWG Name: Claudia Anderson Date Woven: January 2017 Weave Structure: Krokbradg (3 shaft

boundweave) Source: Handwoven, March/April, 2001, p

ROCKY MOUNTAIN WEAVERS GUILD WORKSHOP

Eileen Hallman

Charkha 101: Spinning Cotton on the Charkha

Saturday April 22, 2017

9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Spirit of Hope UMC - Broadway & Mansfield

Learn to spin cotton the easy way! The charkha was designed specifically for spinning cotton. Learn how to tune and maintain the charkha. Will also cover cotton types, preparations and properties.

Eileen has charkhas available to rent for $15.00. A great wheel can also be used for this workshop. Please indicate whether you will need to rent one and the fee will be paid directly to the instructor. Her material fee is $10.00 for handouts and fiber samples.

Cost is $75.00 – a great deal learning from an expert spinning with cotton.

About the instructor

Eileen has been obsessed with cotton since the early 1980s when she learned to spin her home grown colored cotton on a great wheel. She graduated quickly to the charkha. While she does spin and weave with other fibers, the organic cottons are her passion. She is involved in research on organic, naturally pigmented, and recycled cottons and in the development of spinning slivers and yarns from these cottons. She also blends these cottons with other natural fibers to provide cotton spinners with a wide selection of cotton-rich fibers to choose from. You can obtain more information about Eileen at www.charkha.biz/Instruction/bio.htm.

I plan to attend the Spinning with Cotton workshop on April 22, 2017 with Eileen Hallman. Enclosed is my payment of the fee of $75.00.

I will need to rent a Charkha _____ $15.00 payable to instructor

Please mail to Joy Jenson, RMWG Workshop Registrar, PO Box 1291, Evergreen, CO 80437.

Ten Ways to Kill a Society

1. Don’t come to meetings.2. If you do come, come late.3. If the weather doesn’t suit you,

don’t think of coming.4. If you attend a meeting, find fault

with the work of the officers andother members.

5. Never accept an office, as it iseasier to criticize than to dothings.

6. Nevertheless, feel hurt if you arenot appointed on the committee;but if you are, do not attendcommittee meetings.

7. If asked by the chairman to giveyour opinion on some matter, tellher you have nothing to say. Afterthe meeting, tell everyone howthings ought to have been done.

8. Do nothing more than isabsolutely necessary, but whenmembers roll up their sleeves andwillingly, unselfishly use theirability to help matters along, saythat the society is run by a clique.

9. Hold back your due as long aspossible – or don’t pay them at all.

10. Don’t bother about getting newmembers. Let someone else do it.

Many of you expressed an interest at the meeting when Gage Evans read some of the above statements from an archived newsletter, so she has kindly sent them to us for the newsletter.

Words of wisdom………

Archives UpdAte

The archives shelves have moved to the room across from the library in the church.

We have notebooks of Shuttle Scuttle newsletters from the formation of the RMWG. Not only is it mostly complete, but we even have some duplicates of the newsletters. We also have an almost complete collection of yearbooks from the beginning of the guild. Again, we have several duplicates as well. If you are interested in having any of the duplicate copies, let me know and I can tell you what issues there are.

I would love to find the yearbooks that we are missing. If you have any of the following years, please contact me:

1958-59

1961-62

1964-65

1965-66

1966-67

1967-68

2015-2016

We also have books of pictures and news clippings. It’s a great resource and just really interesting for anyone who loves belonging to this wonderful community called the Rocky Mountain Weavers Guild.

Enjoy! Gage Evans
