Spring Is Almost Here

As March comes along, I can’t help but think of Spring and everything that comes with it. The days begin to get warmer, of course, February was quite warm itself. The days get longer and the sun seems to shine more. And Easter always fills my heart with such joy. We may still be in the season of Lent, but the joys of Easter are right around the corner,

especially because Easter is early this year. I can’t even imagine what Spring would be like without Easter. As the world begins to come to life with the budding of trees and flowers it seems as though we are restored too. Restored in the resurrection of our Lord. It’s a chance to start over again. The mistakes of our past, which we generally reflect upon during Lent, are finally put behind us at Easter where we can bask in the love and joy of our new life in the risen Christ. As children of the Lord we have been given that opportunity to start fresh again, forgiven by God. The sacrifice for our sins has been made and righteousness is ours. Therefore, we must “put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” (Ephesians 4:24) As we begin to come out from the hibernation of our warm homes and start engaging others around us more often this Spring, we must display our new life in Christ. We have been made new through the resurrection of Christ. So let your neighbors see the new you, as your faith buds and blossoms into serving all those around you.

In the service of Christ, Pastor Rolf

Wednesday Evening Bible Study

Come join our Bible Study led by Pastor Rolf. We will resume our study on

April 6th in the Fellowship Hall every Wednesday evening from 6:30 until

approximately 7:45.

New Bible Journaling Group

This is a new group and everyone is invited. If you like to doodle, draw

pictures, color with coloring pencils, or just underline; then please join us

for this new group of fellowship and doodling in our bibles. Journaling is a

great interactive Bible Study method. It helps you to interact with God’s

word by recording your thoughts on what you’re reading. Going back

through your journal can help you reflect on what God has shown you in

His Word. And you have an heirloom that will be special to your family.

This should be a lot of fun interacting with others and learning more

about God’s Word. For information contact Deb Baldwin or Carol Malone

at 816-365-7397 or the church office at 816-353-3813. We will meet on

Wednesdays at 11:00 am.

LWML (Lutheran Women Mission League) The topic for March 2016 Circle meetings is found in the Winter Quarterly on Page 22 and is entitled “Taking Pleasure in Dance”. Authored by Sheila Lutz who has been a student of danced for most of her life, performing on dance teams in High School and at Illinois State University. For more than 40 years, she has been a member of “Folk Valley”, a family dance group for which she and her husband, Don, are round and square dance leaders.

Dancing, as we will study, is one of those issues that has been in question even through joyful dancing has ben documented in the Bible. Often people dance as an expression of rejoicing or religious enthusiasm because of some victory or accomplishment. However, there are also accounts of dancing that were not pleasing to God.

Roll call word is “Dance or Music”. Alpha Circle will meet Monday, March 7, 2016 at 7:00 pm at the home of Dorily Miller with Norma Whitaker as her Co-Hostess. Topic will be led by Cindy McCubbin. Acolyte Robes will be checked by Cindy McCubbin for laundering or mending needs. For more information, Please call the President of Alpha Circle, Elaine Nolen at 816-358-1773. Esther Circle and Mary/Martha Circle will have a joint meeting on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at 12:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Darla Wolters and Helen Sunderland will be hosting the meeting. A light lunch will be served. Kathy Boehm will lead the topic. For more information, please call Lois Gilham at 816-920-1477 or Peggy Noah at 816-358-0601.

+++++ +++++ “Lutheran Women in Mission” – The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League has been selected as the winner of 2016 Lutheran Friends of the Deaf John of Beverley Award. This award is presented only when a nominee is deemed to have made a significant meritorious contribution to Mission and Ministry to the Deaf consistent with the ideas of the founders. The Nomination Committee has determined LWML has met their criteria. It is very rare that an organization is honored. The Lutheran Friends of the Deaf was founded in 1947 by a small group of clergy and lay people who committed themselves to helping deaf individuals both physically and spiritually. Their Mill Neck Manor School on Long Island, New York, was dedicated September 23, 1951. The LWML Atlantic District and LWML English District had adopted the school as a Mission Grant. A more recent grant from LWML was for “Bible Story Books in Sign Language and Written Text” Funded during the 2015 Biennium.

+++++ +++++ +++++ LWML – Volunteer Champion. The Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau honored local area businesses and people for helping to promote tourism and bring visitors to Des Moines in 2014-15. Those recognized included The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League as the “Volunteer Champion”, Marilyn Schroeder, 2015 host convention chairman, accepted the award for Lutheran Women in Mission.

+++++ +++++ +++++ +++++ Dr. Iri Ramsey Skinner – was called Home to Glory. Dr. Iri Skinner, Selma Alabama, went to be with her Lord on January 23, 2016. Dr. Skinner was a longtime leader in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Black Ministry. She was the LWML Louisiana District President from 1984-86 and was elected in 1993 as Vice President of Mission Inspiration as the first black women elected to a National LWML Office. She was the dear Aunt Lee, of LWML Vice President of Special Focus Ministry, Kaye Wolfe. Dr. Skinner was 93. Joy Daugherty – was also called in the arms of Jesus. She served the LWML as Recording Secretary (2013-2017) and the first Mission Editor of The Lutheran Woman’s Quarterly. Joy, a resident of Toledo, Ohio, and past President of LWML Ohio District left us with the following prayer – That the LWML continue to fill each woman with the eagerness and enthusiasm to grow spiritually, support missions and be an ambassador for our Lord and Savior in word and deed wherever she is placed.

Book Club

“What are you reading?”

That’s the question Will Schwalbe asks his mother, Mary Anne, as they sit in the waiting room of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. In 2007, Mary Anne returned from a humanitarian trip to Pakistan and Afghanistan suffering from what her doctors believed was a rare type of hepatitis. Months later she was diagnosed with a form of advanced pancreatic cancer, which is almost always fatal, often in six months or less. This is the inspiring true story of a son and his mother, who start a “book club” that brings them together as her life comes to a close. Over the next two years, Will and Mary Anne

carry on conversations that are both wide-ranging and deeply personal, prompted by an eclectic array of books and a shared passion for reading. Their list jumps from classic to popular, from poetry to mysteries, from fantastic to spiritual. The issues they discuss include questions of faith and courage as well as everyday topics such as expressing gratitude and learning to listen. Throughout, they are constantly reminded of the power of books to comfort us, astonish us, teach us, and tell us what we need to do with our lives and in the world. Reading isn’t the opposite of doing; it’s the opposite of dying. Will and Mary Anne share their hopes and concerns with each other—and rediscover their lives—through their favorite books. When they read, they aren’t a sick person and a well person, but a mother and a son taking a journey together. The result is a profoundly moving tale of loss that is also a joyful, and often humorous, celebration of life: Will’s love letter to his mother, and theirs to the printed page.

Chili Dinner

It’s Still Chili Eating Weather! Surely it will be - don’t you think. The LWML will do some great cooking on March the 5th with one purpose in mind. Grow in Peace is in need of a specialty type chair to use with their infant program. This chair isn’t cheap by any means – up to $250. Therefore the LWML ladies will be cooking up 25 lbs of hamburger to pack in pint containers for members to pick up after service on Sunday morning. Of course beans, onions and a secret concoction of spices will be added to make your $3.00 pint of chili lip-smak’n good. Why not plan on buying more than one pint and sharing with a neighbor. If you’d like your chili packed and ready to go, sign up in the entryway the Sunday before.

What’s On the Shelf?

Do you ever stop to see what’s on the shelf under the large bulletin board as you enter the church? There’s really some very interesting items to pick and choose from – items besides the monthly Peace newsletter and Portals of Prayer that every member picks up. Want to know more about the institution that prepared Pastor Rolf for the ministry? Pick up the Fall 2015 “Concordia Seminary”. Along with that is a pamphlet entitled “Concordia Seminary Guild” which lists the various ways seminarians are supported in meaningful ways. Want to know more about supporting the Lutheran High School of Kansas City? Pick up the pamphlet and find out why Bill and Norma Whitaker’s names along with Bert and Nita Runge’s names are listed. How about picking up the Thrivent pamphlet and learning what “Thrivent Choice” is all about. We’re in the season of Lent. Lutheran Indian Ministries located in Brookfield, WI has provided a beautiful book of Lenten Devotions. What a beautiful and thought-provoking depiction of the cross on the cover. There are glossy bookmarks provided by the Lutheran Hour Ministries to hold your place. You can also learn about Jesus el Buen Pastor Lutheran Church along with other LUMA ministries. Domestic violence is a topic not much discussed at Peace. Yet we all know it exists – maybe with someone we know or love. Pick up the pamphlet that gives information from the Rose Brooks Center. Be informed if you are ever called on to counsel someone needing help. Last, but not least, are two publications from the religious community of the metropolitan area. The Shepherd’s Guide is a mini-yellow page directory listing various services such as dentists, landscaping and paving. Our Grow in Peace Daycare is listed on page 36. The other publication, Metro Voice February newspaper has some interesting articles in it. The front-page features the story of a man who wrongfully spent 24 years in prison for a murder he did not commit. His grandmother’s words “one of these days, boy, you are going to need Jesus. I hope you remember to call on Him” came back to haunt him. The article goes on to relate how this man, who never finished high school, began taking classes at Saint Paul School of Theology in 2012. He is now an associate pastor at one of the largest churches in the Leawood area. What in the world would the article “Be Gracious and Patient with the Justin Biebers of the World” have to say? Pick up the paper and find out. It is worth noting that the paper carries an exhortation for all Christians to register to vote – it doesn’t say HOW to vote, just to be a responsible citizen and be registered. Abraham Lincoln was even quoted: “Elections belong to the people. It is their decision. If they decide to turn their back on the fire and burn their behinds, then they will just have to sit on their blisters.” Hmmm.

Lutheran Heritage Foundation

Maybe you recently received another one of those emails from a Lutheran organization and quickly deleted it. No wonder. There are so many needs out in the world. Doesn’t everyone know that we need to first take care of our own. But hold on. How many of you remember when Christian young people were sporting wristbands with WWJS on them? What Would Jesus Say about all these requests for one thing and then another? One only has to read His words in Scripture for the answer. Remember when Jesus told His disciples about the harvest fields being ready, but there were few to do the harvesting? He wasn’t referring to wheat or barley but to souls in need of hearing the salvation story. And remember the Ethiopian who couldn’t understand the book of Isaiah he was reading until Phillip explained it and told about Jesus living, dying and rising to gain salvation for him and all believers? Right now the harvest fields are ripe. We read that all things are according to God’s purpose. Civil wars and ISIS are causing masses of immigration to all parts of the world. This means people without a Christian faith are coming in contact with our Lutheran ministers and missionaries – and they are responding to the Gospel message. Along with this, refugees are genuinely interested in learning about the Lutheran faith because it can be so easily demonstrated from the Bible. While they are mainly interested in the Bible, they see that Lutheran doctrine is simply unpacked from the Scripture and they are happy to learn more. That is where Lutheran Heritage Foundation is filling a vast need. This organization translates “Luther’s Small Catechism” and “A Child’s Garden of Bible Stories” into the language of the people. Sometimes the needs are great, as in Germany, where Lutheran churches are desperately seeking large quantities of Luther’s Small Catechism in the Farsi, Dari and Arabic languages for Iranian and Syrian refugees. Other times, the request may be small – a single Spanish Bible with Small Catechism for a Spanish immigrant in Taiwan. But all requests have one thing in common: the desire to introduce unbelievers to the Savior, Jesus Christ. You’d be surprised what $5.00 will do. There is more information about Lutheran Heritage Foundation on the shelf by the large bulletin board. Be curious, be active, be a missionary! PS: After writing the above article, a January/February newsletter was received from LHF. A paragraph on the front page recounted a tragedy involving a Lutheran seminarian in Sudan - something we Christians don’t even think about here in Kansas City when we think about our seminarians in St. Louis. “…Two of the main tribes in South Sudan, the Nuer and the Dinka, have been engaged in a bloody battle for leadership, resulting in more than 2.2 million people being driven from their homes and tens of thousands killed. One of the victims included a Concordia Lutheran Institute for the Holy Ministry student, Peter Both, during the seminarians’ vicarage year. Four Nuer vicars were forced to flee their villages, leaving behind all their possessions. During his escape, Peter was attacked and killed by soldiers from an opposing tribe…”

Your Mite Offerings Touch Lives!

Two grant recipients received checks through continued mite support.

Outreach in Refugee Camps – Lebanon

Go to Facebook to see the post of this check being presented.

The goals for this outreach are to share the Good News, provide relief to the destitute women and children, and to influence long-term growth of the Gospel. Working through the Middle East Lutheran Ministry (MELM) center they reach out to camps throughout the Belkaa Valley region of Lebanon. MELM will visit the smaller refugee camps to attend to their needs on a more personal and sustained basis. Many of the men still living are elsewhere in Lebanon and work in cities. The grant will pay for humanitarian supplies, printed materials, and logistics. The grant will impact the women and children at a time of dire need with a strong Christian presence.
