The Rummage Sale is Coming! Our FHPC Rummage Sale is coming on March 22, 2014. The hours are 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Chris Young, CLAF Moderator, is the chairperson this year. Our Rummage Sale has a twofold purpose: (1) It’s a fund-raiser for the church, specifically for the Congregational Life and Fellowship Committee (CLAF) which sponsors many church activities in addition to fellowship following wor-ship; and (2) it’s a mission outreach project for the community and sur-rounding areas because our prices are very reasonable and make necessary items affordable for families with limited means. Two years ago a woman said she couldn’t afford the prices at Goodwill, but at the FHPC Rummage Sale she was able to purchase shoes for her entire family for under $5.00. A gentleman bought our used towels to donate to a men’s shelter. He said they were so reasonable that he could afford them all. That’s exactly the kind of service we want to provide! So, how can YOU help? There are many ways!! And don’t worry – NO experience is needed, only a willing heart. We are all here to work together. (1) You can volunteer to co-chair a department, such as electronics, house wares, etc. – there are many depart-ments. This involves organizing the items, pricing them ready for the day of the sale, and helping out in your de-

partment on March 22. (2) You can volunteer to be a cashier or bagger on the day of the sale. (3) We need kitchen workers to feed our hungry volun-teers and keep them going, both during the sorting phase and on the day of the sale. (4) We need you to work on publicity, both formally and informally. Tell your friends. Tell your co-workers. Tell your neighbors.

(5) We need volunteers to do heavy lifting, that is pick up large or bulky donated

items and deliver them to the church; in addition to helping with set-up and clean-up. (6) We need your gently used but not

abused items: clothing (men’s, women’s, children’s), house wares, fur-

niture, electronics, linens, books, dvds, artwork, holiday decorations, and boutique items such as jewelry, scarves and specialty

items. Your donations can be dropped off at the church the week before the sale.

(7) We need help with security in the days leading up to the sale and on the day of the sale. (8) We need help with sorting the donated items during the week prior to the sale and getting them out to the right departments. Borrowed grocery carts are the key to our delivery system – no heavy lifting or carrying here. (9) We need you to come and shop! Find your new treas-ure right in our back yard! (10) We need you to pray for the Rummage Sale commit-tee members that we have perseverance and strength to successfully serve both the Lord and the community. Men’s Fellowship Report - by Norm Collins Another year, another highly successful Sweethearts Brunch!!

I knew it was going to be a special day when I arrived at the Church Campus a little around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, Febru-ary 8. The developing sunrise was spectacular! Another of the many gifts bestowed upon us by God.

On that same lovely morning, almost 150 FHPC members and guests came together in our Fellowship Center to enjoy a deli-cious catered brunch, some wonderful entertainment and each other’s company. See photos on pages 10 & 11.

Music was provided prior to and following the meal by The JDL Trio, Jerry Maples was the Emcee, Pastor Bill Good de-livered the blessing, Roy Nickel and Jim Bates did an out-standing “spontaneous” skit, local restaurateur, Phil Roda-kis, provided the food and Milt Hoff delivered the Benedic-tion. In addition about 25 very helpful volunteers did the setup and decorations; provided food and beverage service; and, cleaned it all up.

Special recognition has to go to “Event Coordinator Extra-ordinaire”, Mr. Jim Bates. Jim is something else. He planned it and made it happen. We are lucky to have him.

The FHPC Men’s Fellowship hopes everyone enjoyed the experience.

WHAT IS PER CAPITA? “Per capita is an op-portunity for all commu-nicant members of the Pres-b yte r ian church through the governing bodies to participate equally, responsibly, and interdependently by shar-ing the cost of coordination and evaluation of mission; and of perform- ing ecclesiastical, legislative, and judicial functions that identify a Reformed Church, while at the same time strengthening the sense of community among all Presby-terians”. (GA Minutes, Part I, 1995) What does this mean for the members of Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church? We have 335 persons on our membership rolls. In 2014, the Per Capita apportion-ment will be $31.00 per member. $6.15 will be sent to the General Assembly PC(USA), $6.00 to the Synod of the Southwest, and $18.85 will remain in our Presbytery. Per Capita income represents 36% of the income within Grand Canyon Presbytery. Over the years, many of you have contributed to your Per Capita apportionment. If you wish to do so in 2014, please write a check made payable to Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church and indi-cate in the memo section it is for Per Capita. Matthew 25:34-36 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, “Come, ye blessed of my Father: inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foun-dation of the world. For I was hungered, and ye gave me meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger and ye took me in. Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye

visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. As I read these

verses, I think of how we do all of these things here at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church. Not all of us do all of these things, but some of us do some of these things and they all managed to get done. We truly do live God’s Word here at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church. Thank you all for helping us with our Mission ministry. Following are some of the events happening with our Mission Com-mittee this month.

Blankets Plus February was our Push for Blankets Plus drive, and we successfully raised $2498 to date for this organiza-tion. Thank you all who so generously contributed to this. As I have stated in the past, all of this money goes directly to those in need. They get food, clothing, blankets, per-sonal hygiene items, school kits, medical, etc. Since we started collecting for this mission in 1997, the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church has donated $34,248.63. This not counting this year’s donations. It is a great feeling knowing we are doing so much good for those in crisis situations.

Extended Hands Food Bank I am sure I sound like a broken record when it comes to this mission. But this is such an important one here in our own backyard. When I last talked to Pastor Dave Iverson, he told me they needed peanut butter, jelly, and mayonnaise. These are the staples that keep some families going on what little they may have. So if you see these on sale, please pick up a couple for the food bank. This is not saying they don’t appreciate and need other items; these are just some that are most often overlooked. Thank you to Susan and Bob Titus, Susan Owens, Nancy Wulfmeier and Terri Schmidt for helping with the famous “Jim Bobs Fish Fry” in February. They had a total of 142 people served, not like the record breaking total of the week before of 197. This is a really good way to help out the Extended Hands Food Bank and the fish is great. The price has been lowered to $9.99 -all you can eat, plus drink and dessert. What a bargain!!

Hope Village The committee had Marie Lanzon come and speak to them in February on “Hope Village”. This is a new mis-sion we are looking into. This is a fairly new project that is getting started. They are partnering with Save the Family Foundation to build low- income housing for adoptive fami-lies and seniors. This project places seniors and adopted children and families, in the same housing project. The rea-son is they help each other. The seniors can baby sit, mentor, play games, share their history, as well as help children with homework. While the children give the seniors help with physical things and gives them a sense of being needed. This project has been successful in other parts of the country. Some of these children are troubled youth that need that ex-tra love and guidance that the seniors are able to provide with their time. This sounds like such a win - win situation. We are thinking of having Marie come again and speak. to the congregation to see if there is an interest in this project.

This project has been able to secure support from various foundations, but at this time they are still looking for land or available buildings that can be purchased and reno-vated or torn down to be rebuilt. They are looking for build-ers retired or working that are willing to help on such a pro-ject. If “Hope Village” can do this on their own, then there will be more room for these adoptive families and seniors. We, on the Mission Committee, want to help get this news out to the public and help in any small way we can. We will get information out to you soon.

SWATT We are continuing our community mission with

other local Churches. We meet once a month and come up with ways to help each other as well as the community. We are still collecting Juice boxes and non-refrigerated Choco-late Milk boxes, for the High School Snack Bags. This group was able to connect a youth in need of glasses with a Lion’s group in Scottsdale who was able to get her an Oph-thalmologist appointment as well as glasses. We are in the process of trying to organize a “National Prayer Day” lo-cally. If you are interested in helping with this project, there will be a start up meeting at 2:00pm on March 4th, at Shep-herd of the Hills Lutheran Church. National Day of Prayer is May 1st.

We are continually trying to support our local people as well as globally. One Great Hour of Sharing will be coming up at Easter and Palm Sunday. The groups that went to the Arizona Opry for the last several years, from our church, have had a super time. It's not just Country Western as last year they presented the "Phantom of the Opera" and did it very well. The show is funny, and the stage is packed with instruments of all kinds - and they play them all! We do car pool, and I will be taking names of those willing to drive and take passengers. We only have 64 reservations and last year filled up quickly, so get your reservations now. Price is $34 and a meal is included. Gifts of Women Sunday We are looking forward to Gifts of Women Sunday when Dr. Liz Corazon will be our featured speaker. Her topic will be “Each Step of the Way”. Special piano music will be provided by our own Patty Knoy. Your Part: All women of the church are invited to come sing with the Women’s Chorus for this service. Rehearsal will be on Thursday, March 20th at 7 p.m. in the choir loft. Come enjoy this special rehearsal and performance on the following Sunday morning!

What’s a Circle Anyway? Jan Hoff brought a beautifully written account of a circle writ-ten by Kaye Mattis which I’m sharing here.

Church ‘Circle” means Sharing Lives Several years ago, as my church circle met in my home my pajama-clad daughter sprawled on the floor in front of the leader as she began the les-son. Pretty soon my daughter got up, looked the leader in the eye, and asked her: “If this is a cir-cle, why aren’t those ladies sitting on the floor in a circle?”

I have belonged to this same church circle for the past 19 years. These dozen women have gone through many of life’s stages together. We started meeting at the church in the mornings while a volunteer babysitter took our small children back to the Sunday school rooms. We ran out of pre-school children after a few years and began meet-ing in our homes.

We went through grade school children, through high school to college students, and one by one most of our children have married. Our biblical application discussions most often center around our homes and children.

I had church circle at my house last week. Boy, has this group ever changed! It is a “mess”. Not a one of us can see a thing without our read-ing glasses. We attempted to make banners for the church. It took more time to round up a dozen pairs of glasses than it did to cut out the whole pattern. The next thing I noticed was that about half the group was experiencing their first hot flashes. I have never seen so much fanning going on during a cool fall evening.

This group that started out carrying diaper bags and discussing Gerber products is now carrying eye glasses, hot flash-fanning hankies, and discussing the IQ’s of their grand-children.

I’ve got a suspicion that hearing could be the next thing to go. We will then have come full circle. Hollering at each other during a meeting, we will resemble the first time we got together and hol-lered over the chattering of our children. Guess that could finally explain what a church “circle” really stands for…. supporting each other through good times and bad times, from youth to advanced youth… living full circle.

HOOKED ON BOOKS The March meeting of Hooked on Books will be on Wednesday, March 19th at 9:30 AM at the home of Helen Rumsey. Jan Hoff will review books written by Gretchen Beito and Inez Mostue about Scandinavian customs and traditions including the Norwegian Nisser and the Swedish Tomte. Books no longer wanted may be brought for the book ex-change. There is no fixed membership in Hooked on Books. Anyone interesting in participating is welcome to attend the meetings. LOOKING FORWARD

April 5th will be our Spring Gathering in the Fellowship Center at 10 a.m. This is a potluck brunch. Bring a break-fast casserole and enjoy a great program. Don’t miss this fun event. There won’t be another until Fall. We’ll be having a fashion show man-aged by The Clothes Silo and our own church models. The clothes modeled will be given to women who are striving to become self sufficient so if you have some women’s clothes which you would be willing to donate to The Clothes Silo please bring them to the Spring Gathering and we will gather them (on hangers

if possible) and send them back to the Silo after the program. We’ll have racks for clothes outside the doors of the Fellowship Hall on that morning. We will also have our annual Book Shower...new and gently used books about the Christian faith may be donated to our church li-brary or you might wish to give a

donation which will be used to purchase books. You may designate “In Memory/Honor of” someone significant in your life. Easter Baskets too. We give Easter Baskets to the children at Devereux. There are approximately 50 chil-dren in need. Please pick up a slip giving you information about a child (age and gender) and information about items not to be in-cluded. These slips will be available at the Gathering and at church the follow-ing morning, April 6th. The baskets need to be

brought back to church the following Sunday so they can be delivered in time for Easter. Your help with this project is very much appreciated. These families currently struggling to provide basic needs are so appreciative of thoughtful things done for their chil-dren. Arizona Brain Food/Backpack Program PW takes responsibility for providing four people to the

Weekender Backpack program on the third Thursday of every month. We meet at 8 a.m. and are back to Fountain Hills before 11 a.m. Its an enjoyable busy morn-ing and nice to be helping in this important program which benefits about 60 children in Fountain Hills and many other valley

Hooked On Books enjoyed a wonderful morning on February 19th performing a reading theatre called “Voices from a place called Sunshine” written by Lorene Hoover. The play starts in 1920 and is set in Centerville, Iowa, a county seat town surrounded by coal mines and farms. The action covers several characters through the roaring 20’s, WWII, and changing social times until the 1970s. It was inspired by the life of Simon Estes, international opera star who was born there and comes back to perform. There were 20 members present and most had parts to read. Of course lots of discussion followed…..a wonder-ful morning and we’re all so proud of Lorene! Sally Atchinson

New MembersNew MembersNew MembersNew Members Margie & Ken Brown Margie & Ken have just moved into their new home in Fountain Hills from Colum-bus, Ohio and Ken is a big Ohio Buckeye Fan.

They have 2 daughters, Ra-chel & Julie with families (and Ken added, No son named Charlie) – 6 grandchil-dren (ages 9 yrs. to 9 months). They enjoy travel-ing, movies, eating out and spending time with family.

Margie is employed full time at a mortgage company as an Administrative Assistant. She enjoys gardening, crafts, singing and baking. In fact, she is already a member of our choir. Margie says she has 2 claims to fame:

She is the 5th generation grand-daughter of Daniel De-foe, author of “Robinson Crusoe”.

She is a direct descendant of Isaac Allerton, a founding father who came over on the Mayflower.

Most of you already know Ken. He has been a Pastor for 34 years and preached the sermon on Men’s Sunday. He was a guest teacher facilitating a series on “Truths That Grab Me and Won’t Let Go “ for 6 Wednesday Nights at “The Way”. His special interests are hiking, reading, Suduko and Bible study. He is the author of 2 books (“Timely Insights” & “Yes, I Can) and has an agent for his 3rd one, “Byte Sized Truths”.

When asked “What brought you to our church, he replied “Jerry Maples invited us to visit and we came—and we’ve stayed, and we have enjoyed getting involved”. THANK YOU JERRY!!

Interesting fact about Ken –He once did an interview with Bill O’Reilly on the O’Reilly Factor related to 2 books he had written.

Sylvia & George Burke Sylvia and George live so close by that they can walk to church, their back yard reaches the borderline of the back of our church property.

They will be celebrating their 53rd wedding anniversary this May and have lived in the mid-west (IL, MI, and IN) for most of those years. They have 6 children scattered across the country , Phoenix, LA, Seattle, Minnesota, and VA---(lots of great places to vacation). They also have 11 grand-children. They lived on a lake in southwest. Michigan and did a lot of water skiing and water sports.

Sylvia has a degree in nursing from Indiana University. She enjoys Bible study and is a Christian writer and a painter of watercolors, pas-tels and oils. She also has made 8 queen sized quilts. Sylvia is also very involved in the church; she sings in the choir and leads one of our women’s Bible studies.

Interesting fact about Syl-via: She has 2 published books, with another coming out soon – (an end times fiction series).

George graduated from Indiana University and had a career in banking. He served as President of both Deerfield Fed-eral Savings and Tower Federal Savings in South Bend.

Interesting fact about George is he enlisted in the Marine Corp. and after boot camp at Parris Island he was sent to Washington, D.C. for various ceremonial and guard duties. He became the personal guard for President Eisenhower at Camp David on many occasions. I GUESS WE’RE IN GOOD HANDS WITH GEORGE!!

Bible Study? We often hear people half-heartedly enumerate just what they plan to give up for Lent – that spiritual period of 40 days from Ash Wednesday to the critical religious celebration of Easter. This year Ash Wednesday falls on March 5th. Starting on March 9th, the first Sunday in Lent, the Sabbath Day Bible Study will seek to find and discuss the scrip-tures in the Old and New Testament that mark the Lenten Season. Yes, even though the description of the Ministry, Crucifixion, and Resurrection of Christ are reported in the New Testament, there are related passages in the Old Testa-ment. We look forward to discovering elements in the Scriptures that will add to the breath and depth of our under-standing of Lent. Special emphasis will be devoted to Holy Week and the Pas-sion of Christ. No part of our church calendar is more important than Easter and the events which lead us to it. In the Sabbath Day Bible Study we will have the opportu-nity to explore Scripture that exists but is less familiar. Will you come and join us as we seek to increase our understanding of Easter and the related actions and events that pro-vide the context for this important reli-gious day? Sabbath Day Bible Study meets each Sunday in the Adult Center from 10:15 for an hour until 11:15 after the 9:00 a.m. worship service. You can

be with us and yet attend the second worship service at 11:15. Everyone is welcomed to attend. Please do!

Blessed Beginnings Nursery Ministry We are offering Blessed Beginnings Ministry for infants during the second service (11:15-12:15 am). And a Min-istry for pre-schoolers if families choose not to keep younger ones with them or if a child needs extra atten-tion. We will always offer more to provide a Christian ministry with chil-dren - even the babies. (see Director of Christian Formation's page for specific programs and time). THE WAY On Wednesday evenings, a GOUR-MET DINNER is prepared by Chef Arlene. Come join us for fine food and fellowship from 5:45 – 6:30 pm. We will be joined by the Elementary Kids and our Teens. We ask for a small donation of $7.00 for dinner. Kids and Teens eat free. There will be no The Way on March 5 which is Ash Wednesday and we will be doing our traditional Continu-ous Communion Service in the sanctu-ary. We will resume The Way March 12 with dinner at 5:45 -6:30, then continue on to the Sanctuary for the Vespers Service. This format will continue for the 5 weeks of Lent. The Elementary Kids (Kid Commu-nity) meet from 5-6 pm. Their minis-try has worship, music, traditions, sto-rytelling, respose and small group con-versation and activity time. The disciples had questions as well. As an awesome teacher, Christ gave guid-ance to all who believed and followed him. In the Thursday morning Men’s Bible Study, we have been reading, discuss-ing, and trying to understand just what Jesus was saying in the first century and the implications his words have on us in our contemporary community of believers – the Church. During March, we plan to continue this exciting and enlightening exploration of the Words of Christ. There is a core of men who attend regularly and contribute to the discus-sion by sharing their views about what is being said. We can make room for other Fountain Hills men so please dare to join us. We meet in the Adult Center at 7:00 a.m. each Thursday morning for study, coffee, donuts, fel-lowship, and friendship. All men are welcome regardless!

Teen Maze was March 1 Our teens with the teens of Church of the Ascen-sion experienced a fun, interac-tive full life game experience March 1st. “The interactive ‘game’ provides information on topics that include sexual absti-nence, contraceptives, sexually

transmitted diseases, sexting, peer pressure, drugs, alco-hol rehabilitation, legal consequences, labor and delive-ry, teen parenting, HIV/AIDS, DUIs and post-graduation career and educational choices. Students will have about an hour to go through the maze. There are many options, and the maze provides a unique experience for each stu-dent.”

30 Hour Famine is April 11-12 Release the Feast! (Fighting hunger, not just handing out food!) Decades have shown that to fight hunger we must equip families with the tools they need to put food on their own tables and to share with oth-

ers. Join the teens or support their efforts in learning about and raising funds for fighting world hunger as they also serve locally. Be generous to help our teens grow spiritually, experientially and relationally in this shared challenge of fasting, learning and serving. Hunger is a social justice issue. That is because King-dom justice in-volves the whole person and their relationship with God, other people, and their own body. Going hungry when there is enough food in the world is not just! Teens will experience some Good News that justice work is more a process than an event. Although there is no quick fix to justice work as it is about the long haul, the 30 Hour Famine is a great step in the process for all!

We need you to see that faith formation of this generation is an intergen-erational process. Karen Ford Karen lives in Fountain Hills. She has also lived in upstate New York, California and North Carolina.

She is married to Glen Ford and has 2 grown children, a son Mark in California, and a daughter Karie, son-in-law and grandson (Clinton) living in Fountain Hills. She also has a step daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Karen was a horseback riding teacher in Colorado and has also been involved in child care for 30 years. Currently she cares for a little boy 3 days a week.

She enjoys having yard sales, playing cards and writing po-etry. When asked what brought you to our church? Karen replied “Phyllis Kern” THANK YOU, Phyllis!

Interesting Fact: Karen is a direct descendant of the members of the Mayflower. Michele & Andrew Hasley Andy has previously served as an Elder and Michele as a Deacon with our church in 2007 and 2008. They have lived in Fountain Hills for 20 years.

Michele has a passion to serve and minister to the hurting through Grief Minis-try and supporting church leadership. She enjoys horseback riding, photogra-phy, computer graphics, piano, flute, golf, gardening, birding and their dog, Addi-son.

She was born in Pittsburgh; schooled in Michigan along with her 20 year career in advertising for major newspapers, retir-ing from USA Today in 1995. She did volunteering in nu-merous capacities for community & organizations, home-bound & the elderly until going into Grief Ministry for the Scottsdale & Fountain Hills communities.

Andy’s special interests are History (Civil War & WW II), golf, chess, violin and his furry child Addison.

Andy was born in Ann Arbor, MI and received his BSEE and MBA from the University of Michigan. He designed com-puters used in military application and banking apps. He also held senior management positions in technology companies. In AZ he became a Life & Health Insurance Agent and Finan-cial Advisor.

The question? What brought you back to our church? The response from Michele—“The Lord (both times) and we are so very grateful for the church’s leadership and Pastor Bill. Cecyl and Peter Herguth Cecyl and Pete have lived in Foun-tain Hills for 16 years. They had a condo in Fountain Hills from 1989 to 1999, then built their home when they retired.

They have 4 children (Wade, Lori, Lisa & Bill), 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grand children.

Pete spent 40 years in the Cement Industry – 25 years with National Gypsum and 15 years with Lafarge Corp.

They were avid golfers, but now love to travel and play bingo. Their goal when they retired was to see all 50 states, and they did, driving to all except Alaska and Hawaii.

Interesting Fact: The Herguth’s were originally going to retire in Palm Springs, but their friends had a winter home in Foun-tain Hills and they insisted that they come and visit. As they were driving up Shea Blvd. and came over the ridge and saw the beautiful view they knew they had found what they were looking for.

And, we’re so glad they made that trip. Bonnie Hollabaugh Bonnie has lived in AZ for 7 ½ yrs. and in Fountain Hills for 5 ½ yrs. She is originally from New Oxford, PA, a small town outside of Gettysburg.

She is the youngest of 8 children and has lots of nieces and neph-ews, including 5 great-nieces and nephews. Most of her family is still in PA.

She has been the Human Re-sources Manager at Fountain View Village for 5 years. She loves animals and has 2 cats, Boo & Bob who are her whole world. She is fluent in American Sign Language and has developed an interest in coin collecting. Bonnie enjoys reading, doing jigsaw puz-zles and hanging out with her best friend, who lives next door.

She lives close to the church, so location was important to

her when she first visited, however, everyone was so warm and friendly and that played a big part in her joining.

Penny & Keith Junk Penny and Keith live in Fountain Hills, and also have a home in Pinehurst N.C.

Penny has been an Elder in the Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church in N.C. and Keith served as an Elder at the First Presbyte-rian Church in Michigan. Keith is already involved with our church, serving as Liturgist during last Sunday’s 9 a.m. service.

The Junk’s visit Fountain Hills several times a year including a 3 month winter stay. Their son, Bryan, daughter-in-law, Megan and granddaughter, Mia live in Fountain Hills, and they also have a daughter who lives in Charlotte, N.C.

They retired to Pinehurst after 30 years of working in Ohio and Michigan. They enjoy volunteering, golf, travel, mahjongg, church and family.

Keith says he has never been kidded about his last name, however, Penny says she doesn’t believe her parents ever imagined she would fall in love with a guy named Junk when they chose the name Penny for her.

Ronald Waldo Ron has lived in Fountain Hills for 5 ½ years. He was born in Youngs-town, OH and grew up in Osage Beach, MO.

His mother lives in Glendale and he is the youngest of 3 brothers and he claims to be a confirmed bachelor.

He is an avid bicycle rider and he likes to crochet and sing. He was formerly a dance instructor for Arthur Murray. He also is a son of the American Legion. He moved to AZ in 1994 and took the job as the dining ser-vice manager for Fountain View Village in August 2008. AND, we have learned from an outside source, Ron recently won the “Heart of Caring” award by the residents and staff of Fountain View Village. Pastor Bill attended the event and said it is the equivalent of the “employee-of-the-year award”. He also said that all-in-all, it is a terrific testimony to Ron’s compassion and commitment.

Ron says he left his church in Colorado in 1993 and had not thought of becoming a member of another church until he found his new church home here. He says he moved in next door to our church and sent a letter to all the local pastors. Pastor Bill responded and invited him to this church.

We are fully into the time of year when our winter residents have helped our church and town come alive with events and occasions which keep us all busy. We have been hearing our music minis-try as part of our worship ex-perience, with music that paral-leled the fruits of the spirit, rein-

stating the fundamentals of our belief, and the ba-

sic, solid foundation that binds us together as a fam-ily of God. Now, we move into the Lenten Season, when we focus our attention upon the passion and suffering of our Lord. We will be bringing music into our worship experience that encourages the thought and prayer adoring God and His act for our salvation through the life and death of His Son. We will be singing music that must recognize this act as so amazing, so Divine, which demands our soul, our life, our all, as Isaac Watts put it in "When I Survey The Wondrous Cross," and to dissolve my heart in thankfulness and melt mine eyes to tears, which is more text taken from another of Watts hymns, "At The Cross." The music is there, and our hearts are primed. The Lenten experience will also bring a Ves-per Service on Wednesday Evenings. There, a small Vesper Choir will enhance the experience, and sup-port the music that we may all sing together through this time. The month of March will also bring an opportunity for you to come to the Rio Verde Church on March 16th to hear your Celebration Singers as they present

We will hear the Pearwood Recorders, Patsy Knoy playing piano during Offertory and Postlude, and Doro-thy Parris and Caryl Bates playing the Prelude. We are asking ALL WOMEN WHO LOVE TO SING, and their friends, to come to the rehearsal on the Thurs-day before, March 20, at 6:30, to sing in the Women's Choir. It's a wonderful time to be with your friends, and to get to know some of the other women who love to sing! This is a wonderful and enriching time of our lives, and I am so grateful to be a part of it as the Director of Music Ministries. Relinquishing control

Marcia shared how she’d been struggling to relinquish control and let God direct her life. One day, amid this chal-lenge, her daughter approached her for homework help, which called for the use of an iPad. As Marcia struggled to make sense of her daughter's question, the youngster kept swiping at the screen, zooming in and out and grabbing the tablet to turn it toward herself. “If you want my help,” said Marcia in exasperation, “then let me help!” Suddenly Marcia had an a-ha! Moment: Hadn’t God been saying the same thing to her all the while? Ty & Kristi Robinson Tyson was born on a farm in Atlantic, Iowa. He was one of four boys who, ac-cording to his wife Kristie, were a handful for their parents. So as not to put their marriage in jeopardy, she added, "However, he was the best of the four."

They had a propensity for setting thing on fire and many more mischievous acts. However they have all grown up (parents managed to let them live) and she added, "He's a good man now." Tyson attended Central College in Pella, Iowa and then on to University of Kansas where he got his Master's Degree in History and Museum Manage-ment. This has led him to a position at Mayo Clinic as History Co-coordinator as an Archivist. Kristie is a Biol-ogy and Chemistry teacher at Fountain Hills High School. Kristie was born on a farm near Bloomfield, Iowa and has three sisters and one brother. The family moved to Bloomfield where Kristie went to High School. She said while growing up on the farm she harbored some fears, one of them being afraid of the dark. So her father, hop-ing to cure this fear would send her on errands in the dark. He also would have her climb up to the top of the silo in the dark. She said that sometimes he would sneak up to her and scare her and then assure her that there was

nothing in the dark to hurt her. Kristie went to Central College in Pella, Iowa for her Bachelor's degree. Kristie and Tyson first met in their freshman year at Central College and remained friends until eight and a half years later when they started dating while Tyson was in his basic training for the Air Force National Guard. As for the craziest thing they have ever done. Neither one could think of anything. (However, I bet Tyson could tell us of some crazy things he had done as a boy on the farm). As for their first jobs, Tyson de-tassled corn for DeKalb Co while Kristie worked for her older sister's company (Microbiologist). She had the job of cleaning things in the lab. Their favorite job so far is being a parent to Ella. (We'll see how they feel when she is a teenager). They became members of the church shortly after they were married June 2011. They used to feel that the most life-changing experience in their lives was getting married, but now they have changed their minds to feel-ing it was Ella's birth. Kristie said, "not getting much sleep was one life-changing experience". As to who had the greatest impact in their lives, Tyson said it was his parents, while Kristie said it was her siblings. Her oldest sister challenged her to do better in school than she, pushing her and chiding her to get high marks in her EPC and more. Her brother taught her to drive when he came home from the Air Force and he also pushed her to be the best she could be. They say the reason they came to the Presbyterian Church is that they were made to feel so welcome and an important part of the church.

Stop, look and listen

Lent, the season of the church year that’s associated with repentance, begins on Ash Wednesday (March 5th. this year). While some people deny themselves by giving up something for Lent, others prepare for Easter through special Bible studies or devotions. Christians observe Lent for these reasons: • It causes us to STOP. Lent says, “Stop and rest awhile,” as well as “Stop doing wrong.” • It tells us to LOOK. Look inward for an honest self-examination. Look upward to see the cross of Christ offering healing and love.

Look forward to the hope of the Resurrection. • It tells us to LISTEN. Listen to the words of Christ. Listen to the voice of God. Listen to the winds of the Spirit of God. Stop, look and listen. Hospitalized? Call the church!

If you are sick, hospitalized or home recovering from ill-ness, we want you to call the church and let us know! In a con-gregation like ours where people leave in droves for extended summer months, it is easy for the staff, elders and deacons to assume, when we don’t see someone, that they are simply “vacationing away”. The truth is that some of you are sick and we are not aware of it. You can help us by simply letting one of the staff know of your situation. We have an excellent support system in place due to the diligent efforts of our deacons. Help us serve you by com-municating your situation.

Fear Not

I wonder if fear is not our main obstacle to prayer. When we enter into the presence of God and start to sense the huge reservoir of fear inside us, we want to run away into the many distractions that our busy world offers so abundantly. But we shouldn’t be afraid of our fears. We can confront them, give words to them, cry out to God and lead our fears into the pres-ence of the One who says, “Don’t be afraid.
