MEMBER OF THE MONTH

JERRY YOUNG

Our “Young” est Charter Member

Jerry Young joined the Copperstate Mustang Club in 1979 as a member of the Gerald and

Joyce family and one of the original CMC charter members.

Jerry grew up with many Mustangs around him. His Dad “Gerald” Young has had

quite a few mustang pony cars over the years. The Young family moved to Arizona

from Ames, Iowa and arrived in Phoenix the

same day the first Astronaut walked on the moon, July 21, 1969. I don’t think there’s any

connection but it made for an interesting item

for the story. Jerry was born November 6, 1961 one

of three children to Joyce and Gerald. Jerry en-

joyed mustangs at an early age and has had 5 of

his own in addition to the many mustangs that Gerald brought home over the years.

Jerry met his wife Michele while attending high school at Arcadia. (The high school

that is home to Lynda Carter, Wonder Women.) Michele managed to resist Jerry’s charm all during High School, showing great taste in character, but weakened in 1982 (a year after

graduating) and married Jerry in 1985.

In true Mustang Lover fashion, Jerry and Michele started their married life by driv-

ing off from the wedding reception in a 1966 Mustang convertible (Gerald’s at the time). A few years back Gerald and Joyce gave Jerry and Michele the same 1966 converti-

ble that they started their honeymoon in. Jerry and Michele have been married 27 years,

which shows how much patience Michele really has. That “old” 66 convertible has had much work over the years. Lately Jerry has up-

graded the engine, rear end, brakes (4wheel disc) a/c, sound system and wheels in 2010.

Jerry did admit to one crazy moment in his life when he brought a “Camaro” but after much “rehab” he finally came

back to his roots. He currently still

owns the 1966

convertible and a new 2011 black/red Shelby convertible that you’ve

seen at many of the Copperstate

functions. Our thanks go out to all of

the “Young Family” for a life time

of good memories.

Celebrity Baseball Game

Retired St Louis Cardinals Pitcher Buddy Schultz is a member of our club. To help promote the

club and Mustangs, Buddy invited us to park some Mustangs at the game. We had 12 cars and

abut 20 members attend. The purpose of the game, besides having fun is to give $40,000 to 40

Arizona Little League teams at the game. Retired baseball players as well as current Diamond-

backs players go out and put on a good show.

We all had a good time, even though those displaying their cars had to arrive by 9am and the

game doesn't start until 1pm. Jeff is still trying to clean fingerprints from his Cobra while Joe's

new Shelby has drool marks all over it. Many people came to see the Mustang with doughnuts

on the front seat. None of us could figure what was so special about our choice of breakfast

food.

THE FAST LANE

2013 Shelby GT-500 Has Arrived By: TMN Staff

Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) is using the Chicago Auto Show this week to celebrate its

20th Anniversary with the debut of the 2013 Shelby GT500 convertible. It’s a fitting occasion as

the 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra was introduced right here at Chicago exactly 20 years ago.

While the 2013 Shelby GT500 with its 650-horsepower V8 made it’s debut earlier this year, this

event marks the official debut of the drop top model. And SVT has gone to great lengths to keep

the topless snake as venomous as the coupe. “The Shelby GT500 convertible is every bit the per-

former that the coupe is,” said Kerry Baldori, SVT Global Performance Vehicles chief engineer.

“All of the significant changes we made in the program were instrumental in delivering a con-

vertible that could really shine on the track but can still be driven on a daily basis.”

The 2013 Shelby GT500 convertible with the optional Performance Package is faster around a

track than the outgoing model. The new convertible shaved nearly 3.5 seconds off its lap time at

Sebring International Raceway compared to the 2011 and 2012 models.

Keys to the improved lap times are the power boost from the new 5.8-liter supercharged V8 pro-

ducing 650 horsepower, as well as the SVT-designed Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers

available on the Performance Package and the all-new chassis tuning.

Accessed on the dash with a simple push of a button, normal mode gives customers a more com-

fortable ride over road irregularities. Sport mode is all about performance, delivering improved

response time on the track and less body roll while cornering with reduced pitch under braking.

The upgraded dampers allowed SVT engineers to tune the convertible more aggressively for the

track, while still being able to maintain desirable on-road manners.

Page 10: March MEMBER OF THE MONTH JERRY YOUNG 2012 · BOARD OF DIRECTORS Phyllis Petrone 480-857-1323 Dan Martorano 602-828-0340 Tom Martin 602-621-0590 Jerry Young 480-706-3992

THE FAST LANE cont’d

A new Brembo brake system also is a key enabler in boosting the performance of the converti-

ble. The new brakes offer drivers enhanced stopping power to help keep their car under control,

while new six-piston calipers in front along with larger front and rear rotors further improve braking

performance. More aggressive brake pads also help the car achieve high deceleration and further ro-

bustness for more driver confidence.

The 2013 Shelby GT-500 raises the bar high on performance by delivering 650 horsepower and a

track-tested top speed of more than 200 mph. The 5.8-liter supercharged V8 aluminum-block engine

produces 650 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque, making it the most powerful production V8 in

the world.

Nearly every part of the powertrain has been optimized for producing the additional horsepower, in-

cluding a new supercharger, new cross-drilled block and heads, updated camshaft profiles, a new

carbon fiber driveshaft and upgraded clutch, transmission and axle.

And nearly every gear on the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 has been revised to manage the torque and

use more of the power in a way that makes it more driver-friendly.
