Prelude O Sacred Head Now Wounded Hessler/arr. Hayes Welcome

Introit

This is the hour of banquet and of song; this is the heavenly table fully spread; Here let us feast, and feasting, still prolong the hallowed hour of fellowship and bread.

*Call to Worship (from Psalm 32)

Let all who are faithful offer prayer to God; At a time of distress, the rush of mighty waters shall not reach them. Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, O righteous; Shout for joy, all you upright in heart.

*Hymn 509 All Who Hunger Gather Gladly

*Invitation to Confession

*Litany of Confession

Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you. You provide the food we need; yet we desire a different menu. (silence) Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against our neighbors. We make sure our own cups are filled, while offering little to others. (silence) Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against ourselves. We stuff our minds and bodies with things that cannot satisfy. (silence)

*Assurance of Forgiveness

*The Peace of Christ

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.

*Sung Response

We are forgiven. We are forgiven. Thanks be to God. Thanks be to God. (repeat)

Time with the Children Peggy Terpstra Children grades 2 and younger are invited to remain in the service or go to First Steps.

Anthem Draw Us in the Spirit’s Tether Curry/Friedell

Draw us in the Spirit’s tether; for when humbly in thy name, two or three are met together, thou art in the midst of them; alleluia, alleluia; touch we now thy garment’s hem. As disciples used to gather in the name of Christ to sup, then with thanks to God, the Father, break the bread and bless the cup, alleluia, alleluia; so knit thou our friendship up. All our meals and all our living make us sacraments of thee, that by caring, helping, giving, we may true disciples be. Alleluia, alleluia. we will serve thee faithfully.

Scripture Reading Matthew 4:1-11

Sermon Come to Your Senses: Sharon Youngs You Are What You Eat

*Affirmation of Faith (adapted by members of FPC)

We believe in God, the Father Almighty, and in Jesus Christ, his Son, our Lord, and in the Holy Spirit. We seek to know God's will, to walk in God's ways, and to proclaim the Gospel to all people, by our lives as well as by our words. We work and pray for the progress of knowledge, the promotion of justice, the reign of peace, and the realization of human unity in our time. And we look with faith for the triumph of righteousness in our community and in our world. Amen.

The Sacrament of Holy Communion

Invitation to the Lord’s Table

Great Prayer of Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Holy One, in this dry and weary land … stand to sing your praise: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. We give you thanks and praise for Jesus … Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon this bread, this cup … all glory is yours, O God, now and forever. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Worship notes

Our sermon series, “Come to Your Senses,” continues this morning with a focus on our sense of taste. For Communion today, several “tastes” are offered. At each station for intinction will be a basket of different-flavored breads and a cup of red grape juice. At each station will also be a basket of gluten-free bread and a cup of white grape juice in which to dip it. The servers holding the baskets of bread will hand a piece to you, which you are invited to receive and then dip into the appropriate cup, taking care to keep your fingertips from touching the juice. You also have the option of not dipping the bread at all.

Canoeing Lent Our pizza supper and discussion of Canoeing the Mountains continues for the next two Wednes-days, Mar. 11 and 18. Pizza is served at 5:15 p.m. in the fellowship hall; the discussion begins at 5:45 p.m.

Who Are We Presbyterians? On Sundays, Mar. 15 and 22, at 9:00 a.m., in room 6, Sharon will continue the series, “Who Are We Presbyterians?” All are invited, especially folks who are new to FPC. Discussions cover Presbyterian theology and FPC’s mission and ministries.
