Lent: Season of Grace and Mercy Catholic Tradition Having moved to the Desert a few years ago, I often grumble about how much I hate the desert, to which my spiritual guide would say, "But God is in the desert." "Why can't God be in the mountains or the trees and lakes and green grass and the snow, quip?" "Oh, God’s there, too, is more fond of the desert."

Well, God may be fond of the desert, but I am not. Who wants to hear silence at the end of our prayers? Who finds it easy to stay with emptiness and offer praise when God seems to have vanished? I am tempted to be scared and self-pitying, and wonder if God has given up on me.

At first the silence is deafening and jarring. In the desert there are no distractions, nothing to please my eye and tempt me to look elsewhere. My desire for comfort does nothing to fill my desolation. To face the emptiness of my own desires and ways. To reflect on the fruitlessness of my life. To realize how much I need God and others.

It's a struggle because it requires a repeated act of my will, which isn't easy when the heart is arid. Lazy flesh is be-ing asked to learn greater discipline; a faint spirit is being urged on to courage; and dared to risk being emptied, trust-ing that God will fill the void with His own spirit. Still, something deep within is calling me to trust; If God has chosen this desert for me for now, I will follow Him into it. Whether I hear God speak or not, I will pray. If my mind is a void and my heart empty, I will just quietly bow before Him with humility and gratitude for all He has done.

A SUNDAY FOR REJOICING Today’s Gospel story of the prodigal son is a favorite of many. We can identify with all the major figures and their criss-cross of emotions. The father’s initial grief over his young son’s avarice is turned to relief at his return. The son’s grief over his loss of fortune, family, and friends is turned to joy at the sight of his father. We understand the eldest son’s bewilderment over his fa-ther’s generosity. For the older son, virtue seems not to be its own reward. For all his honorable toil and loyalty, there seems to be no celebration. The father, however, is prodigal in his for-giveness and mercy. He expects the same generosity from his older son. He wants all to rejoice when the lost one is found. This is a Sunday for rejoicing. It’s time to pause, consider, and encourage one another. We are the prodigal children head-ing home. We are the elder siblings waiting with the eager Fa-ther, who scans the horizon. In Jesus we are reconciled to the Father and one another. In his mercy and love we rejoice.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — God’s people enter the promised land, ob-serve the Passover, and eat of the fruit of the land (Joshua 5:9a, 10-12) Psalm — Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34)

Second Reading — We are now ambassadors for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17-21)

Gospel — We must rejoice when our brother who was dead in sin repents and comes back to life (Luke 15:1-3, 11-32)
