Dear Friends,

To the Greeks at Corinth, and to the Americans at Logan Square, Saint Paul exclaims, “We implore you, on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” Saint Paul extols the importance of the ministry of reconciliation given to the apostles, and, by virtue of our connection to them, to us. In the Catholic Christian life, we experience

reconciliation with a lower case “r” and a capital “R.” Both require self-awareness, humility, patience and understanding. In this year of mercy, reconciliation is key.

Reconciliation (with a small “r”) constitutes a major part in honest relationships. In the seventies there was an advertising campaign, I think, that stated “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.” Although where I heard it remains fuzzy in my brain, my reaction to it doesn’t. I wholeheartedly disagreed (and still do disagree) with the assertion. I contend that love means recognizing our imperfections, admitting our faults, trying to change, and indeed saying we are sorry. Love means letting go of hurts and grudges, and allowing ourselves to be reconciled. Love means realizing that we are all children of God, made in God’s image, and are called to love one another. Love means saying we’re sorry, truly meaning it, and forgiving one another.

Love is made manifest in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Sacrament plays out, in real life, the drama exhibited in the story presented in today’s Gospel. Love possessed the father to give the son more than he deserved, before he deserved it. When to boy basically said to his father “you’re dead to me. Give me my inheritance…” unconditional love impelled the father to give the son what he asked for.

Love prompted the father to wait, watching for the son to return. “While he was still a long way off,” suggests that things were different in the father’s house while the son was away. Things weren’t business as usual. The son’s absence disrupted the household. The father’s love for the son had him longing for the son’s return. So he waited and watched.

Isn’t that what God does with us? God so loves us and wants us to be close. God, through the death and resurrection of His Son has reconciled the world to Himself and sent the Holy Spirit to us for the forgiveness of sins.

When speaking about regular Sunday Mass attendance and participation in the life of the Church, I often tell people, young and old, that our house is different when they’re not present. When Catholics leave the Church, when members of the Body of Christ stray to sin, the Church lacks. I think that is one of the reasons Pope Francis has called this the Holy Year of Mercy. The Roman Catholic Church is incomplete when her members are afar. We wait and watch. Using the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and living the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, we invite our brothers and sisters to come home. In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the Church, and her priests (sinners themselves) welcome the sinner home. We celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation as the father celebrated the son’s return. Maybe you can invite someone who is away from God or the Church to come home this Lent.

Returning now to the small “r,” and considering the season of Lent, I invite you to join me this week in imitating the father in the famous Prodigal Son story. Reach out to someone who has hurt you. Be quick to be the first to forgive. Let go of past hurts. Allow love, rather than resentment, to rule your hearts, to prompt your words, and to direct your actions. We all have people we need to forgive, for little things and big things. Lent is a perfect time to work on reconciliation with the small “r.”

O God, who through your Word reconcile the human race to yourself in a wonderful way, grant, we pray, that with prompt devotion and eager faith the Christian people may hasten toward the celebrations to come. Through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever.

Let’s make that prayer our own this week. Let’s pray it, and do it!

Our Lenten program continues! Please join us at 7pm this Friday for Bilingual Stations of the Cross followed by Soup with Substance. Join us for an opportunity to come together for a night of prayer and fellowship and enjoy a simple meal of soup and bread with our community.

Our substance on March 11th will be provided by James Johnson speaking on Laudato Si’ and the Care of Creation. This presentation will be bilingual. All are Welcome!

LENTEN SERVICE PROJECT - TOILETRY DRIVE

As a Lenten Service Project, the community of Saint John Berchmans will collect toiletries for distribution to shelters in Chicago. Please remember to bring your small and sample sized toiletries to all Masses the weekend of March 12/13. Also, join us at the Soup with Substance on Friday, March 18th to sort them with other members of this community.

CHURCH CLEANING FOR EASTER

Please join us on Saturday, March 19th as we join together in cleaning our spiritual home in preparation for Easter. There is much to do and more hands makes the work easier. Please bring a rag and a bucket if you have one and we will tackle the nave, choir loft, and sanctuary. We will begin at noon. We need you! Join us if only for an hour.

Estimados amigos,

A los griegos en Corinto y a los americanos en Logan Square, San Pablo exclama, “le imploramos, en nombre de Cristo, aproxímese a Dios.” San Pablo exalta la importancia del ministerio de reconciliación dado a los apóstoles y en virtud de nuestra conexión con ellos, a nosotros también. En la vida cristiana católica, experimentamos la reconciliación con una “r” minúscula

y con una “R” mayúscula. Ambas requieren conciencia, humildad, paciencia y comprensión. En este Año de la Misericordia la reconciliación es la clave.

Reconciliación (con “r” minúscula) constituye una parte importante en las relaciones honestas. En los años 70s había una campaña publicitaria, creo que decía “amar significa nunca tener que decir lo siento.” Aunque el lugar en donde escuché eso permanece borroso en mi memoria, mi reacción es muy clara. Estuve totalmente en desacuerdo (y todavía lo estoy) con esa afirmación. Sostengo que el amor significa reconocer nuestras imperfecciones, admitir nuestros errores, tratar de cambiar y de hecho, decir lo siento. El amor significa olvidar heridas y rencores y permitir la reconciliación. El amor significa darse cuenta de que todos somos hijos de Dios, hechos a su imagen, y estamos llamados a amarnos mutuamente. El amor significa decir que lo sentimos, y ser realmente sinceros al decirlo, y perdonándonos el uno al otro.

El amor se manifiesta en el Sacramento de la Reconciliación. Este sacramento en la vida real es evidencia del drama que se exhibió en la historia del Evangelio de hoy. El amor hizo que el padre diera a su hijo más de lo que merecía, antes de que lo mereciera. Cuando el hijo simplemente dice al padre “usted ha muerto para mí. Deme mi herencia...” el amor incondicional impulsó al padre a dar a su hijo lo que él pedía.

El amor forzaba al padre a esperar a que su hijo volviera. “Cuando todavía estaba lejos,” indica que las cosas eran diferentes en la casa del padre mientras el hijo estaba ausente. Las cosas no eran como de costumbre. La ausencia del hijo perturbó la harmonía del hogar. El amor hacía que el padre anhelara el regreso de su hijo. Por lo tanto esperaba y miraba.

¿No hace Dios lo mismo con nosotros? Nos ama y quisiera que nos acerquemos a Él. Dios, a través de la muerte y la resurrección de su Hijo ha reconciliado el mundo consigo mismo y nos envía el Espíritu Santo para el perdón de los pecados.

Cuando hablo acerca de asistencia regular a la Misa dominical y la participación en la vida de la iglesia, frecuentemente le digo a la gente, jóvenes y adultos, que nuestra casa se siente diferente cuando ellos no están presentes. Cuando los católicos se alejan de la iglesia, cuando los miembros del cuerpo de Cristo se descarrilan, la iglesia carece. Yo creo que esta es una de las razones por las cuales el Papa Francisco ha llamado el Año de la Misericordia. La iglesia católica está incompleta cuando sus miembros se alejan. Esperamos y miramos. Usando el Sacramento de Reconciliación, y viviendo las obras de Misericordia Corporales y Espirituales , invitamos a nuestros hermanos y hermanas a que regresen a casa. En el Sacramento de la Reconciliación, la iglesia y sus sacerdotes (pecadores ellos mismos) dan bienvenida al pecador a su casa. Nosotros celebramos el Sacramento de la Reconciliación como el padre celebró el regreso de su hijo. Tal vez usted puede invitar a alguien que está alejado de Dios o de la Iglesia para volver a casa esta Cuaresma.

Volviendo ahora a la “r minúscula,” y teniendo en cuenta la temporada de Cuaresma, le invito a unirse a mí esta semana imitando al padre en la famosa historia del hijo pródigo. Acérquese a alguien que lo haya lastimado. Sea rápido para ser el primero en perdonar. Olvide las heridas del pasado. Permita que el amor y no el resentimiento, reine en su corazón, que inspire sus palabras, y que dirija sus acciones. Todos tenemos a alguien a quien perdonar, por cosas pequeñas y por cosas grandes. La Cuaresma es un tiempo perfecto para crear reconciliación con la “r” minúscula.

Escuche otra vez la oración de apertura de la misa de hoy.

Dios Padre Nuestro, Tu Palabra, Jesucristo, habló de paz a un mundo de pecadores y trajo a la humanidad el regalo de la reconciliación por el sufrimiento y muerte al que fue sometido. Enseña a la gente que lleva tu nombre a seguir el ejemplo que El nos dio; que nuestra fe, esperanza y caridad convierta el odio en amor, el conflicto en paz, la muerte en vida eterna. Pedimos esto por Cristo Nuestro Señor.

Que este sea nuestra oración esta semana. ¡Orémosla y cumplámosla!

PROYECTO DE SERVICIO DE CUARESMA

Como un Proyecto de Servicio Cuaresmal, la comunidad de San Juan Berchmans recogerá artículos higiénicos para distribuirlos a lugares de refugio en Chicago. Por favor, recuerde traer sus artículos de higiene personal de tamaño pequeño y de muestra a todas las Misas del fin de semana el 12/13 de marzo. También, unase a nosotros en la Sopa con Substancia el viernes, 18 al de marzo para organizarlos para su distribución junto con otros miembros de esta comunidad.

RCIA SpotlightIvan AcuñaOriginally from Irapauto, Guanajuato in Central Mexico, Ivan Acuña has been living in Chicago for nine years. He is one of 13 brothers and sisters—all of whom still live in Mexico.

Ivan, who is preparing to receive the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation, is also a member of the Peace and Justice/Paz y Justicia Commission at St. John Berchmans parish. He was introduced to SJB three years ago by his fiancé, Emily Marion. The two of them are planning a June wedding. Ivan said that Fr. Wayne Watts encouraged him to join the RCIA program.

Ivan and Emily have a dog, Marley, who lives for squeaky toys and chasing squirrels at the park. He works at Great Brothers Pallets where he drives the forklift and is in charge of shipping and receiving.

Emily and Ivan met dancing so it is no surprise that among his favorite things to do is dance—especially cumbia! He also likes to listen to music, go to flea markets, make carne asada on the grill, fix cars, go camping, electronics, movies and playing with Marley.
