(NAPS)—It’s called “aging in place”—being able to stay inyour home safely as you age without having to move to an as-sisted-living facility. According to AARP, 70 percent of 65-year-olds are living where they’ll be the rest of their lives. With more and more seniors staying in their homes longer,

it’s important that those homes are as safeas possible, says Charles Valinotti. He’sSenior Vice President of QBE Regional In-surance, which underwrites property andcasualty coverage through General Casu-alty, Unigard, Farmers Union Insuranceand QBE Agri. To stretch out their years of independ-

ent living, seniors should pay special at-tention to fall prevention, yard safety, andhome modification and repair.Fend off falls: Statistics on falls are

staggering. According to the Centers forDisease Control and Prevention, one inthree adults 65 and older falls each year.About half of those who suffer fall-re-lated injuries have to move to nursing fa-cilities. “Seniors should take inventory ofrisk factors in their homes that could leadto falls,” Valinotti says. “They can ask anoccupational therapist to conduct a walk-through and make recommendations toprevent falls.”Some tips to fend off falls:• Repair sidewalk and driveway cracks.• Install handrails on stairs and steps.• Secure carpeting and avoid throw rugs.• Reduce clutter.

• Use a night-light.• Consider subscribing to an emergency response sys-

tem.Safety by the yard: Yard maintenance holds hazards for sen-

iors. A Johns Hopkins University study found the top 10 in-juries among seniors while workingin their yards are caused by lawn-mowing mishaps—from lifting themower to trying to service the mowerwhile it’s still running.“Consider getting help with yard

work from relatives or think aboutpaying someone to do it,” Valinottisays. “A lawn and garden companymay have a program that helps olderpeople with yard work, as well asother outdoor jobs such as guttercleaning.”Don’t forget ongoing home safety

issues: “Because seniors often live inolder homes, it’s important to makesure the electrical wiring is in goodshape,” Valinotti says. “We’ve seenmany older homes where fuses areoverloaded. That’s a loss waiting tohappen.”Safety inside and out: Making mod-

ifications and repairs can allow sen-iors to more easily manage bathing, cooking andstair-climbing activities. Valinotti suggests installing sturdygrab bars in the bathroom, outside ramps for easy access andlow countertops in the kitchen.
