March 4, 2016 Wow! Did Juniata Elementary ever have an awesome week!
Last Friday evening Juniata Elementary's fifth and sixth grade Show Choir
performed their show, "Reaching for the Stars". There were close to 225
parents, relatives and friends in attendance. Selections included medleys fromBroadway hits "Les Miserables" and "Mary Poppins: The Musical." Students
rehearsed before and after school since December to perfect their singing,
dancing, and acting skills for the big show. Students were extremely proud to
share their talents! The Drama Club, directed by Heidi Soldner and KathyOtto, is now beginning work on their May musical, "Aladdin, Jr."
On Tuesday, March 1st Juniata Elementary celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday
with our annual Read-Across America Event! The school was full from top to bottom, as I said before it certainly was awesome! The best part of the
evening is that every Juniata student that was in attendance left with a brand
new book to read on their own or with their family. After all, reading is
everything, and if you don’t believe just read this famous quote from Dr.Seuss himself, “The more that you READ, the more things you will KNOW.
The more that you LEARN, the more places you’ll GO.

The celebration of Dr. Seuss’s Birthday was continued
throughout the week. Miss Earnest’s class focused on the
magical world of Dr. Seuss as the students participated in
interactive read aloud lessons, whole group discussions, sensory stimulating activities, writing prompts, and creative
movement and dance. In addition, in line with Juniata's
Positive Behavior Plan the students celebrated a month of
wonderful behaviors by building a snowmandemonstrating teamwork, communication, and friendship.
Third grade wrapped up February by reading Henry's
Freedom Box by Ellen Levine. The students learned about the brave abolitionist men and women who helped runaway slaves
on the Underground Railroad. In this particular story, the
students learned about Henry "Box" Brown's escape fromslavery and his 27 hour journey from Virginia to Pennsylvania
inside a wooden box.
Traditionally March comes in like a lion, but this year Third Grade welcomed March with snakes and
amphibians! Miss Heidi, from Canoe Creek State Park, returned for her final visit with our students and this
week's lesson was all about adaptations of snakes and amphibians. The students explored eleven different stationin order to learn about how amphibians and snakes hear, life cycles of frogs, viewing the similarities and
differences between reptile and amphibian eggs, and much more. The students have had a tremendous amount of
fun learning about all sorts of animals and their adaptations this year.
They cannot wait to head to Miss Heidi's "classroom" at Canoe Creek this coming May!

Fourth grade is making formative assessment FUN with Kahoot! Theyhave created a fun learning game that only takes a few minutes to help
them assess the learning of their students. We call these ‘Kahoots’, they
are made from a series of multiple choice questions, videos, and evendiagrams. The students are so engaged in the learning, it’s amazing! In
fact, they didn’t even realize they were being assessed. And…. They
wanted to do it again!!!
Each player answered questions on their own lap top, while the
game was displayed on the classroom Promethean Board to unite
the lesson – “Creating a campfire moment” – encouraging playersto look up at the screen and think about the questions. After each
question the leader board was displayed and students could see
their progress. It was exciting to see new students take the lead
after each question; truly a fun and rewarding way to demonstrate
learning. Give it a try – it’s a Kahoot!
“BELIEVE THERE IS GOOD IN THE WORLD” – The Juniata Student Council continues to try and live up to
their motto for the school year. Last night members of the student council and their advisors, Ms. Soldner and MrPerry spent time helping prepare some of the backpacks that will go home with students across this district today.
They were super excited and had a blast helping out!
