DEBERÁS SER TOLERANTE CON LAS MUJERES CALVAS: Bendigo a

DEBERÁS PREOCUPARTE DE CUIDAR A LOS POBRES: Hace veinte

plena y feliz.

¿Qué “mandamientos culturales” ayudan a crear un ambiente

más bondadoso en tu ciudad?

Third Sunday of Lent

Those commandments Moses brought down from the

mountain have served the world well. There are some cul-

tural commandments that are making us kinder and gen-

tler too. What do you think of this list?

THOU SHALT RECYCLE: We’re doing better, but it’s so

strange that a culture so enamored with the Nature Chan-

nel is still filling the oceans with plastic at a rate of 8 mil-

lion tons a year.

THOU SHALT NOT LITTER: We HAVE done better here! La-

dy Bird Johnson initiated the Keep America Beautiful

movement over fifty years ago, and it caught on. Those of

us alive in those days remember that it used to be ac-

ceptable to throw receptacles out of cars, or leave picnic

trash on the ground. Gross.

THOU SHALT MAKE PUBLIC PLACES ACCESSIBLE: This is

huge. Dedicated parking spaces for those with disabilities

give a daily kindness to those who need a little help. Thank

you!

THOU SHALT BE TOLERANT OF BALD WOMEN: I bless eve-

ry brave person―woman or man― who forged this fron-

tier. I live in a city that is filled with merchants who didn’t

bat an eye when I walked in their store, bald from chemo.

I hope that your city is as gracious as mine.

THOU SHALT CARE ABOUT THOSE WHO ARE POOR: Twen-

ty years ago my brother asked us to help a family living in

low-income housing. There were four little

kids―tragically, the baby drowned after being abducted

by her father―and a traumatized mom who didn’t speak

English well. Today, thanks to financial aid and brilliant

programs set up for children just like them, they (and

many of their friends) have all graduated from college and

are thriving.

What “cultural commandments” are creating a kinder en-

vironment in your town?

CONFESSION ~will be available before every dai-ly Mass during Lent beginning on Tuesday, February 20th.

LIVE THE LITURGY - How seriously do we take the Ten Commandments? Many today adopt a free spirit approach to life and resist con-forming their thoughts and actions to established guide-lines and principles. We all need direction. Those who trav-el realize how much easier journeys can be when equipped with the proper directions. The Ten Commandments are God's proper directions for us to assist us in living our lives as his children. We are given the example of Jesus, the liv-ing temple. Jesus allows us to share in his intimate rela-tionship with his Father so that we can more quickly find our way to him. Guidelines and structure are important. Lent reminds us we are created in a certain way and are meant to live our lives in God.

AROUND THE COMMUNITY MARCH 4, 2018

Dear Friends of St. Rose of Lima Community, I hope and pray you are having a blessed Lent! Some meander-ings this week: First a few shout outs. Thank you, Tammy Abad, for volunteer-ing to take on the bulletin each week! What a gift you are to the parish. Thank you, choir, for your willingness to try new music! Your ministry at the 9 a.m. Mass was very moving for me and I hope others as well. Thank you, also, to the generous volunteers who clean the church each week! Please keep our principal search committee in your prayers as we work through the process of hiring our next principal. There is a prayer provided for you on our bulletin insert. Our parish mission “Lord, Teach Me to Pray” begins this Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. Come and have your spiritual life nurtured this Lent! A penance service will be had on Wednesday to close out our parish mission. Refreshments will be offered. Sunday evening we’ll have pizza available! I will be making pizza with my outdoor pizza maker. See the bulletin insert for more infor-mation. Two of our RCIA catechumens recently attended the Rite of Election at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral! Please keep all fifteen of our RCIA catechumens and candidates in your pray-ers as they approach full initiation (reception of all three sacra-ments of initiation – Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation) into the Catholic faith at the Easter Vigil. A committee of parishioners has helped me put together a for-mation program for the celebration of Quinciñeras. The agree-ment forms are available in the parish office both in English and Spanish. Claudia Moo is the contact person for this ministry. Her contact information will be in the bulletin going forward. Quinciñeras will be celebrated on Saturdays, but never during the 4 p.m. anticipatory Mass. This is a great opportunity to evange-lize the next generation of young women. The two alley doors will be locked during all Masses for safety reasons. Please use the front doors. If you are handicapped, please take advantage of our drive-up-lane on the northeast side of the church building. Some of our Knights of Columbus have removed the front pew on the tabernacle side of the church in order to make more room for those in wheelchairs. Please feel free to take advantage of that. Thank you, Knights of Columbus, for your help in this re-gard. The alley door leading to the basement will be open after the 9 a.m. Mass so that faith formation students can enter and exit there. Our first Sunday of the month coffee and donuts is this week. In order to become Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compli-ant we will begin using the St. Rose of Lima room instead of the basement community room to host this monthly gathering. My only hesitation is that I don’t want to treat the tabernacle side of the sanctuary as a hallway, so unless you are handicapped, please enter through either of the alley doors or the door on the north side of the sanctuary by the Marian chapel. We’ll designate the tabernacle side for the handicap because there is no step to navi-gate. Thank you for understanding. Please pray for me as I pray for you. In Christ, Fr. Nick

Every Friday during Lent supper & fellowship followed by Stations of the Cross from 7:00 to 7:45 lead by the ministries that support St Rose. Stations will then be followed up with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction lead by Deacon Don. A priest will be available for confessions from 7-8. There will be Lent material both in English and Spanish in our kiosk in the narthex.

Remaining Lenten suppers & Stations provided by:

March 9—Knights of Columbus (Fish Fry)

March 16— Bilingual Ministry March 23—TBD

The Knights of Columbus would like to invite everyone in the parish to participate in this year’s Lenten challenge, 40 cans in 40 days. It chal-lenges everyone to collect 40 can-food items for the Com-munity Ministry Food Bank

during the 40 days of Lent. Drop your cans off in the back of the Church and the Knights will collect them.

Let’s make this year’s collection the biggest ever. Confirmation Lenten Service Project Let’s help keep the homeless warm. We will be col-lecting hats, scarves, gloves and hand warmers. There is a bin in the back of the church for the items. Thank you in advance for your help.

The Holy Rosary will be prayed at 8:30 Sundays before the 9 am Mass
