Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Tim Belk remembers going to the office with his father, Thomas M. Belk, and working during the summers. President and Chief Operating Officer Johnny Belk has similar memories and remembers family gatherings with family members.
They recalled going on car trips for vacations and their father stopping at Belk stores along the way.
“Dad would always stop at a
store, so we would never get there,” Tim recalled. “He would take the opportunity to walk through the store and we’d be in the car saying, ‘Come on, let’s go.’”
This year, the brothers are excited to celebrate the
store’s 125th birthday. They look forward to the celebrations and the future, Johnny said.
Though they grew up in the Belk culture and their father took over the business from his father, the boys said they were not pressured to join the business after college.

Voting challenge has local impactThe U.S. Supreme Court is currently
hearing a challenge to Section 5 of the Vot-ing Rights Act.
The section requires certain states and counties, including Union County, to receive pre-authorization from the Depart-ment of Justice before implementing any changes in voting.
The board of elections requires permis-sion if they change an established voting sites, when they are setting up voting sites for early voting, for any type of special elec-tion and municipalities must have approval for ABC elections, John Whitley, director of the Union County Board of Elections, said.
“As far as conducting elections, it doesn’t put any major hardship on us, we just have to have permission to make certain chang-
es,” Whitley said. The challenge was brought by Shelby
County, Ala., one area covered by the sec-tion.
Among the covered states, Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, South Caro-lina, South Dakota and Texas are siding with Shelby County, while California,
