“People can walk the entire[University of North Texas]Coliseum concourse and sam-ple some of the best food anddrinks that Denton has to offer,”said co-chairman ZacharyTucker. “It’s a festive event withmusic and all kinds of food.”

Tucker said that the vendors“go all out” with decorationsand food preparations for theevent.

“As of now, we have 38 ven-dors coming out to showcasetheir talents and products,” said

Weston Haggard, the other co-chairman for the event.

They compete for 28 awards, such as the most unique entree, the tastiest dessert, the mostelegant presentation and themost original booth. There areoverall winners in three cate-gories, including the Judges’Award, Kids’ Choice and Peo-ple’s Choice.

Winners receive “braggingrights and a nice trophy orplaque,” Tucker said.

The annual event is spon-sored by Denton Kiwanis Club, which donates the proceeds toits Children’s Clinic. Themoney benefits “the familieswho cannot provide monetarysources for their children to getthe treatment they need,”

Haggard said. UNT Athletics isalso a beneficiary.

“I believe we have alreadyraised more this year than lastyear just with sponsorships. Weare hoping to double what wedonated last year,” Haggardsaid.

Denton’s theater scene veers off the beaten path this weekend, with two local companiesand one enterprising band testing the waters with newer plays, and the debut of workswritten by emerging Denton playwrights. By Lucinda Breeding | Features Editor

Fight Boy Theatre, another emergingand busy Denton theater company, closes its short-play festival this

weekend. Feast of Plays (Sloppy Seconds) features

four short plays by local playwrights:Space-Time Discontinuum by L.J.Chandler and Kevin Wickersham; ThoseMen and Their Amazing Superpowers byBryan Patrick; Shades of Grey by Melanie

Bryn Welch; and Nobody’s Guilty (How theWest Was Invested) by Chazzwick.

The short-play festival, a phenomenonnudged along by former artistic directorJoshua Scott Hancock, is a mix of comedyand drama — of both the absurd and con-ventional sorts.

Welch, a Texas Woman’s University

Ryan Cortez and Max Brown giveFacebook the credit for JurassicPark: The Musical.

The idea came up as a joke in a statusupdate on the social networking website.

“That was the original inspiration,”Brown said. “And then I wrote this littlething about it on a forum, and Ryan waslike, ‘No, you really should do somethingwith this.’ It pretty much went from there.”

Cortez and Brown are already friendsand colleagues, thanks to their indie-popdance band, Savage and the Big Beat.

“What we do as musicians already tendstoward [musicals] as it is, so it wasn’t real-ly much of a stretch,” Cortez said.

The duo said the musical, a parodybased on the Michael Crichton novel-

Sundown Collaborative Theatre hasnever skirted violence or desire in itsyoung but busy life.

The young company dives headfirst intoboth lust and bloodshed in Diana Son’sStop Kiss.

Son’s television work likely paved the wayfor this play about identity, vulnerabilityand homophobia. As a writer and executiveproducer of Law & Order: Criminal Intent,

Son isn’t conditioned to pull punches whenit comes to the things that rattle us.

Stop Kiss finds Sara and Callie meeting, becoming fast friends and then surprisedby an unspoken attraction. Their first kissprovokes a brutal attack by an angry by-stander. It leaves Sara in a coma and Calliestruggling with the emotional aftermath.

The play is for mature audiences andincludes strong language.

theater education student, saidher play is perhaps the mostdramatic. Shades of Grey is thestory of a famous, flamboyantlygay artist who is having anaffair with his model — awoman. A tragedy forces theartist to face his fears and hissexuality.

“The original story wassomething I started in highschool,” said Welch, a graduateof Ryan High School and thedaughter of local theatermavens Dennis and KylaWelch. “I had fantasies aboutmaking it a novel. To turn itfrom a novel to a full-lengthplay, it would have been threeacts. Making it a short play issimilar to writing a short story. You have to condense yourstory and hit all your mainpoints.”

Welch said her script leanstoward melodrama.

“I’m having to work reallyhard, and keep the actors fromoverplaying it,” she said.

The festival is a compact sur-vey of Denton’s vital theaterscene. In one evening, audi-ences will see just how theestablished community theaterscene in Denton has helpeddevelop new work, fresh ven-ues and young literary voices.

turned-Steven Spielberg block-buster, has roots in good old-fashioned fandom. Both Brownand Cortez profess a love forthe unlikely story of a scientistwho clones Jurassic-eradinosaurs from genetic materi-al, then plans to open a themepark rumbling with livedinosaurs on an isolated, high-security island. The story is acautionary tale, wagging a fin-ger at scientists who let theirgod complexes run away withthem. It’s also a Hollywoodtakedown of American-stylecorporate greed. Disasterstrikes when the scientistinvites his grandchildren toattend a preview tour of theamusement park. The powerfails, and the dinosaurs starthunting the humans.

“We’re huge fans of themovie and the book,” Brownsaid. “Writing the songs actual-ly wasn’t that hard. The musicwas done pretty quickly.”

Cortez said drafting thescript, a mix of dialogue fromthe 1993 film and the creators’own work, took longer to write.

“We knew it was going to beimportant to keep some of thefamous lines from the movie —lines like, ‘Hold on to yourbutts!’ We knew which oneshad to be in there,” Brown said.

Brown and Cortez said asmuch as they like the book andthe first film (the film spawnedtwo sequels), they knew the

story was “ripe for parody.” In the musical, a costumed

cast — including actors in car-toonish dinosaur suits — playout the story of doom and ter-ror with just a handful ofprops and set pieces. Musicalnumbers carry the playersthrough the story, withenough liberties to elicit guf-faws from the audience. Trueto the musical theater conven-tion, the songs reflect the tem-perament and posture of thecharacters, all of whom arescripted to be played “over thetop,” Cortez said.

“The characters who aremore reserved, their songs aremore like ballads, and, forexample, Dr. Ian Malcolm, theguy who wears all black and is abadass, his music is prettymuch rock and roll. The T-rexhas this big scary rock and roll,”Brown said. “The T-rex singsabout wanting to wipe out thehuman race.”

Cortez said he and Brownconceived the musical as anentire production. Once it wasfinished, they recruited per-formers.

“I wasn’t sure what toexpect,” Cortez said. “We knewthat there were a lot of peoplewho really love Jurassic Park, but I’d say I was expecting athird of the audience we gotwhen we first did it. I wasn’texpecting 400 people to showup.”

Can’t win ’em allLosing plan of ‘WinWin’ wraps up alittle too neatly

By Boo AllenFilm Critic

The title Win Win is iron-ic. The only person in thecomedy-drama who

believes all have won is thecharacter who’s ignorant ofhow much damage he hascaused.

We all know someone likeMike Flaherty (Paul Giamatti),the central character in writer-director Thomas McCarthy’sstory. These people, like Mike, blithely travel through lifebelieving they can make thingsright, even when ignoring oth-ers’ actual needs and desires. They know what’s best.

For Mike, only when facingpersonal and professional dis-aster does he comprehend both

the consequences of and thelimitations of his selfishapproach. McCarthy deftlyexamines this obtuse altruism, with its unforeseen yet malig-nant ripple effects.

Mike Flaherty practices law,but not successfully. He alsoserves as an assistant highschool wrestling coach for theinept squad in his hometown ofNew Providence, N.J. He and

wife Jackie (Amy Ryan) havetwo small daughters, many billsand a bleak future.

When confronted with anopportunity to draw moneyfrom the state to act as guardianto his aging client Leo (BurtYoung), Mike takes the money. He then sticks Leo in a facilitybut still pockets the money.

About the time Mike ration-alizes away his putting Leoaway, a wild card arrives in Kyle(newcomer Alex Shaffer), Leo’steenage grandson from Ohiowho ran away from his drug-addled mother (MelanieLynskey).

From there, McCarthyorchestrates his drama. Mikejuggles Leo and Kyle — the lat-ter turning out to be an excel-

lent wrestler and the schoolteam’s possible savior.

McCarthy cogently definesthe necessities and contradic-tions in Mike’s competing obli-gations, even if the tidying upof these burdens wraps up a lit-tle too neatly in the end.

Much of the persuasiveness ofWin Win comes from anensemble cast entrusted withmaking the conflicting demandsbelievable. Giamatti alwayslooks best in these put-uponroles. Amy Ryan, whose im-mense talent has been increas-ingly recognized, persuades andconvinces in what could havebeen a throwaway role.

Beastly () This predictable ren-

recluse by a spell that can only be
