102 Years Young!Be sure to wish Ernest and Elizabeth a happy birthday! Both turn 102 this March. I never thought I would say this, but centenarians are more common now. At Victoria Park we have four! However, it is still a small group, relatively speaking. At last count (2012) the United Nations estimated there were 316,600 people 100 years and older in the entire world.Congratulations, Elizabeth and Ernie!

Spring CleanAfter years of living in a home and raising a family, the prospect of sorting through a lifetime of accumulated belongings is overwhelming both emotionally and physically. It’s a big job you are all familiar with, but you did it!Now, once again with the spring season comes a fresh start! And, did you know that a good spring clean and declutter project is not only beneficial to your space, but to your health as well? It’s true! Psychological studies have shown that clutter exacerbates anxiety, depression, and generally just makes us feel overwhelmed and stressed. Cleaning and decluttering on the other hand, is often cited as a stress-reliever and it also burns calories! While you no longer need to carry out those grueling spring cleaning chores like washing walls, cupboards, baseboards and draperies, not to mention the outdoor chores, why not take some time to declutter and organize your living space?Take a look through your closets, drawers and cupboards. Check for expiration dates on items like skin care products, food and perishable items. Declutter the closet and part with those clothing items you have not worn for years or will never wear again. Collect loose pictures and arrange them into a photo album. These are just a few ideas to help get you started. After the job is finished, you will feel the rewarding sense of accomplishment and love the new organized space you created. If you have clothing items that you would like to donate, we will have a drop-off box in the Activity Room. Happy decluttering!
Do Taste Buds Change With Age?
The answer is yes. Your sense of smell and taste change as you age. Between the ages of 40 and 50, the number of taste buds decreases, and the rest begin to shrink, losing mass vital to their operation. After age 60, you may begin to lose the ability to distinguish the taste of sweet, salty, sour, and bitter foods. On Tuesday, March 16th, at 2 p.m., come ready for some taste testing and learn more about these changes with Daniella and Brucie.
Seated Line DancingSomething new on the calendar this month and we can’t wait to get started.Seated line dancing is a fun and interactive way to keep that spring in our step all month long! You need not be a Fred Astaire or Ginger Rogers, this activity is for everyone. Come have some fun and give it a try on Tuesday, March 2nd, at 2 p.m.
There Is a Day for ThatHere are a few happy days and activities you just might want to mark on the calendar this month.World Wildlife Day, March 3rd: This day was established in 2013. It seeks to celebrate wild animals and plants, while raising awareness about environmental issues and the need for action to protect the flora and fauna of Earth. A documentary will be shown at 1:45 p.m.Plant a Flower Day, March 11th: We’ll get some flower bulbs in the dirt so we can enjoy the blooms on the patio this summer.Chinese New Year, March 12th: Also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival. Join us in the Activity Room at 2 p.m., to learn about their New Year customs and traditions and try a Green Matcha Tea.St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th: Wear something green today or risk getting pinched.Chip Chat Social, March 18th: You will be in good company and we’ll have a variety of potato chip flavors for you to sample. Bet you can’t eat just one!Elvis joins the Army, March 24th: On this day in 1958, Elvis was inducted into the U.S. Army. His movie, “G.I. Blues” will be shown in the Activity Room at 1:45 p.m.
Kudos CornerVic Park residents were gifted with some heartfelt and thoughtful packages from various local businesses in January. We want to express our sincere thanks to the local vendors that provided the gifts, as well as the wonderful people who assembled and delivered the packages. We recognize that a great deal of personal effort was put into this project and we are sincerely grateful. We also want to send a big thank you shout-out to Maureen Pritchard and Monica Harland for gifting our residents with some awesome crafting supplies. We have already used some of the items in our “Crafty Creation” projects and we have plans for many more of the items.
The Covid-19 Vaccine Arrived
We are just so happy to share that our residents received their first vaccine against Covid-19 in January. Nurses from Public Health spent most of the day with us and did an absolutely amazing job.Your positive and hope filled comments could be heard throughout the day. One said freedom and a return to a normal lifestyle just didn’t seem so far away anymore. Many asked if the Dining Room would be re-opened now that the vaccine was administered. We all hope to see some of the restrictions eased and expand over time, but those decisions will be guided by our Provincial officials. Like us, their priority is keeping our residents safe and healthy.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY FIRST DAY OF SPRING
We Know How to Have Fun!
Here we are and it’s March already! Our Island Hopping Adventure seems like it was so long ago. What a great bunch of sports we have here, always willing to try new food, drinks, cultural crafts and learn about such a wide array of subjects about cultures, health and environmental issues, just to name a few.January and February are behind us and thank goodness for that! February provided a bone chilling week as the polar vortex hung over Regina. -50 degree temperatures made us all feel that being quarantined wasn’t so bad after all.March 20th is the first day of spring. Let’s welcome the season together at the Spring Fling Social.

Let’s Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day
St. Patrick’s Day is a holiday known for parades, shamrocks and all things Irish. Have you ever wondered why we wear green, tell stories of leprechauns, display shamrocks and wear t-shirts that say “Kiss Me I’m Irish”?10:45 a.m.: Stop by the Activity Room to register for the “Pot of Gold” search. Prizes will be available and it’s a fun way to get those steps in and start the celebration.2 p.m.: Our very own Vic Park Choir has planned a St. Patrick’s Day performance and everyone is invited. Meet us in the Dining Room.3 p.m.: Amidst the millions of people who don green to celebrate the Irish, few know the reasoning behind many popular St. Patrick’s Day traditions. For this reason, you won’t want to miss the Sham Rockin’ Social because we’ll have some fun facts from shamrocks to shenanigans that just might surprise you!
