Indiana Adult Education Class at FSS Do you need help studying for the HSE (GED) Test? Would you like the opportunity to take the HSE practice test? Do you already have a diploma but need to brush up on some math be-fore going to college? Would you like to have someone help you one-on-one with your studying? Meet Stephan Shan-non, New Albany Housing Authority’s new Education Resource Coordinator.

Mr. Shannon is from Chicago, Illinois and graduated from Southern Illinois University of Carbondale in 2013. He will be serving as the liaison between families, principals, teachers, and school leadership. He stated that his goal, while working with families, will be to provide them with the tools and resources the students need both in-side and outside of school. “ I’m look-ing forward to extending an after school program in the fall. A program that will include tutoring, workshops, college tours, assistance with FASFA’s, mentors for younger school aged chil-dren as well as peer mentoring oppor-tunities for older students,” stated Shannon. The housing authority is ex-cited for all the great things Mr. Shan-non has in store and cannot wait to build stronger relationships with our NAHA families. If you would like the opportunity to speak with Shannon face to face, he will be making an ap-pearance at each site conducting a ‘Meet and Greet’. Exciting news everyone, as of March 17th the new Safety and Security Center will be open for visitors! We are so excited to have a safe place here on campus that our residents can come to, especial-ly our neighbor-hood kids. If you need a quiet place to study, read or just hang out for a little bit, please do not hesitate to come by and see us. The Safety and Security Cen-ter’s normal office hours will be from 9am to 4 pm during the week. So we hope to see you this spring break!

Family Self Sufficiency Ms. Anna Bell has been a New Albany Housing Authority resident for many years. Anna had not worked a formal

job in a long time. She had been busy raising her three kids and then found herself helping out with after school

care for her two grandchildren. Anna walked into the Family Self Sufficiency office with her daughter Catherine and

decided that there were many things she wanted to do. At the top of the list was to get a job. After enrolling in the

FSS Program in April 2018, things started happening quickly! Anna’s personal case manager Cindy S. was able to

enroll Anna in a special pay work program through National ABLE. Anna began working as our FSS Receptionist. An-

na came in and put her skills she had developed as a mother and grandmother to good use! She whipped the front

office into shape! Anna runs our FSS office with a genuine care for each person that comes through the door. She

has a high standard of professionalism. Anna also recruits new clients to our FSS Program.

Ms. Anna is currently enrolled in our Adult Education Program here at the Family Support

office. She is dedicated to obtaining her High School Diploma. Anna is working on passing

one final math requirement, and then she will be a successful High School Equivalency grad-

uate.

Ms. Anna attends all our FSS Meetings such as Financial Empowerment & Budgeting Clas-

ses, Homeownership Class, Holistic Hardware, Healthy Cooking and much more. She has

completed a (6) week college introduction class with IVY TECH. She has volunteered to help

assist with our NAHA resident events. Ms. Anna has been empowered and inspired by all

her new challenges.

THE BULLDOG ASSISTANCE

CENTER (THE BAC): The BAC can provide any student with

school supplies, clothing, toiletries, food for lunch, and in some cases food for the weekend when school is not in session. If you know a student in need, contact a counselor at NAHS.

CINDERELLA SHOPPE: The Cinderella Shoppe is a boutique that is available to any student eligible to attend prom or the Military Ball. Interested students can request a shopping trip to the classroom, where they can rent a dress or tux for $15. Additional accessories are also available. Students can contact Mrs. Corrie for an appointment (room C106 or ccorrie@nafcs.k12.in.us).
