Advanced Art Students Participate in

Strawbridge Young Artist Exhibition

Brevard Cultural Alliance states the following about the League: "The Strawbridge Art League, Inc. was

founded over twelve years ago by a small dedicated group of artists intent on bringing to the Space Coast a

limited version of the “Torpedo Factory ” in Alexandria, Virginia. This means a facility in which artists can

practice their chosen field as a profession, exhibiting finished works for sale, creating their art, or both."

One of the programs this organization offers is the Strawbridge Young Artist Exhibition. They coordinate an

art contest and exhibit to showcase young artists as well as advocate for the Arts at the Foosaner Museum in

Melbourne in the Education building. Thomas Jefferson Middle School's Advanced Art Students participated

again this year in the wonderful exhibit. This year our very on Natalie Phan has earned an award and will

learn more about her award at the reception March 6th at 5pm. Her work and the rest of the class's work is

on display until then if you would like to see the talent Jefferson has.

they can help you get started.

Jefferson Students Visit Tropical

During Literacy Week, 30 of Jefferson’s reading students paid a visit to Tropical Elementary to act as reading

tutors. Students walked down in the morning and visited first and second grade classrooms in order to read

aloud to the Tropical students. Some read in front of the entire class while others read to small groups of

students. At least one student has the special experience of being able to read to his sibling’s class.

Literacy Week

Literacy Week was the last week in January and Jefferson students celebrated all week long. There were

dress up days, trivia, a field trip and a campout in the library. Literacy is key to learning and the media center

in cooperation with teachers tries to provide as much access to reading and literacy instruction as possible.

Rockledge City Counsel Member Michael Cadore Speaks

On Thursday, February 20, Rockledge City Counsel Member and ex NFL player Michael Cadore gave an anti-bullying and suicide awareness presentation to students. He met with boys and girls separately. After speak-ing about the importance of respecting yourself and others, he shared stories from his life and took ques-tions from students. Student enjoyed the session greatly and many stayed after to continue to talk with him. Previously he was a volunteer at the Tied Together event and has spoken to teachers during a professional development day. We are grateful to Mr. Cadore for his support of our young Statesmen.

Purple Up Day

Did you know that Florida has the fifth highest number of school-age military children in the United States? April is designated the Month of the Military Child and is a time where military bases, cities, and school dis-tricts take time to honor our youth of military families with special events just for them. as part of this month-long celebration, schools and local communities are invited to take part in Purple Up Day! On this day, teachers students and staff will wear purple to show our support for military youth. This day is being recognized in Florida on Friday, April 17th, 2020.

This day allows us to recognize and honor Florida’s youngest heroes, over 50,000 military children, and their families. Purple Up! acts as a visible way to show support and thank military youth for their strength and sacrifices. Purple symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is the combination of Army green; Marine red; and Coast Guard, Navy and Air Force blue. This event is spon-sored by UF’s IFAS Extension. They invite all Florida residents to participate and share their activities and photos with the tags #fl4h and #purpleup .
