What’s Happening in Spring 2020 March 2020

From the President

Spring is in the air

As spring 2020 approaches, it's a time to reflect and recoup from this past year’s hustle and bustle. 2019 was a busy year for Two Waters. We want to give thanks to our own Adria Hanson for enriching the lives of so many local children through the summer arts programs that were in collaboration with PenMet Parks. Adria’s passion for enriching the lives of so many local children is phenomenal! Now that school is back in session Two Waters has worked hard to make plans for our involvement in our Key Pen schools, our local homeschool programs as well as adding more adult art classes.

I personally want to send a thank you to all that contributed to the success of our first Give Your Heart to Art event in February. We are thrilled to be able to host an event that brings together our schools and community. We hope that everyone will join us again next year!

We are hard at work planning for this year and have many new exciting events on the horizon!

--TWAA President, Delia McGinnis

 Arts Education

Looking to continue arts education while at home?

While our schools are closed and kids are home, there is no better time to get creative! We have created a page on our website filled with resources for learning and interacting with art world-wide. Many of these projects can be done at home with supplies most families have. Or explore a museum across the world by taking a virtual tour.

Check out our website at https://twowaters.org/index.php/arts-education-projects/ for ideas. We will be updating it regularly. Contact us if you have any suggestions or ideas.

Homeschool Art

This year we are trying a new class for our homeschoolers. We are working with Patti Nebel, who opened her ceramics studio to 6 students who learned all about the basics of working with clay. They learned everything from pinch pots to glazing and firing. We appreciate Patti’s willingness to introduce a new medium!

Arts Education (Continued…) Evergreen After Ours Art

Evergreen After Ours began late September 2019 and will continue throughout the school year. So far we have covered art in nature and are beginning to learn how to do self portraits. Students learned about the changes that fall brings to our environment and used foliage to create their own masterpieces. They also learned how to work with watercolor and oil pastels to create some creative artwork. We have explored many different mediums, but I think watercolor has been a favorite so far!

KPMS After School Arts

Our KPMS Coordinator, Stephanie, kicked off working with the middle schoolers right away. Tweed Meyer worked with students the month of September, Sandy Uboldi for October, Chris Bronstad for November and Patty Finnigan for December. They will study a variety of art styles and projects throughout the school year.

 Arts Education (Continued…) Adult Art

Two Waters has been recently involved in a group of artists that gather once a month to do figure drawing sessions. This free class does not use an instructor, but gives participants a chance to hone their skills using a live model. Participants take turns modeling poses each month. It’s a great opportunity to connect and meet other artists in our community while refining your skills. These sessions are held at the Key Peninsula library the first Friday of every month. All are welcome!

 Spotlight on Our Students

Greta Thunberg joins the Scarecrows of Key Peninsula   Each year as part of the Key Peninsula Farm Tour, scarecrows begin to invade downtown Key Center starting early October. This past October our own students at the KPMS After School Arts program participated in the annual Key Center Scarecrow Contest creating colorful Greta Thunberg. Their scarecrow was located at the Sunnycrest Nursery sign and welcomed Key Center visitors with her cheerful smile.   Their scarecrow along with other participants were recently showcased in an article in Key Pen News which can be read online.   Two Waters hopes the students enjoyed making and displaying their work and will encourage them to participate again next year.   A special thanks to Stephanie Flintoff for pulling this project together!

 In the Community

Our Annual Give Your Heart to Art Event  On behalf of all of us at Two Waters Arts Alliance we want to thank everyone involved in making our 1st Annual Give Your Heart to Art event a success! This event was held at the Key Peninsula Civic Center February 9th and brought together a wonderful performance by the Vaughn and Evergreen elementary school choirs and drum corp. While the students were performing, we had artists from Two Waters creating Valentine's themed art pieces that were being auctioned off with proceeds going back to Two Waters' programs. We also offered a few tables where the kids could draw and make friendship bracelets to take home.

A huge thank you goes out to Lisa Mills and Teri Hammon for helping us to pull this all together with the schools. Their coordination helped to make this event very special.   We hope to make this an annual event that showcases different forms of arts education on the KP.

STREAM Night at Vaughn Elementary  In February, TWAA joined Vaughn Elementary in an exciting night of Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art and Math (STREAM). We had our own room set up and showed students the art of Suminagashi (sue-me-NAH-gah-she), the Japanese art of paper marbling. This art is an ancient meditative Japanese practice of floating ink on the surface of water, then capturing it on an absorbent paper.

Our room saw over 135 students come through. Some students even came through a second time and marveled at how this process worked. We had a few families even ask for more information to be able to make their own at home.   Thanks to Heidi Heistand for including us in this great event! We look forward to next year!

Hootenanny! at the Mustard Seed Project  In early January Two Waters, in collaboration with The Mustard Seed Project, put together a monthly Hootenanny event. This event offers a collaborative environment for all folksong enthusiasts. The group sings songs from the fabulous years of folksinging - PP&M, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, The Kingston Trio, Phil Ochs, Woody Guthrie, Tom Paxton, John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot, plus traditional songs.   Singers and instrument players of all kinds are encouraged to join in. Bring your voices, guitars, banjoes, ukuleles, fiddles, mouth harps, harmonicas, washboards, spoons, washtub bass, etc. Or just come to watch this great event!   Join in the fun every 2nd Tuesday of each month from 2:00 – 3:00 pm at the Crandall Center at The Mustard Seed Project.

Our 2019 Key Peninsula Art Walk was a Huge Success!  Our 5th Annual Art Walk, held August 2019, was an exciting and successful event! This past year we had 40 participating artists and several vendors that filled Key Center with some amazing talent. Our venue provided artists to exhibit all forms of artistic expression. This year was a first for us with two young budding artists participating with their own booths!   A special thank you goes out to our paid sponsors, Bruce Titus, El Sombrero and KP Business Association. Your contributions helped us pull together the best event to date! We would also like

to thank all our local businesses that provided space for our participants and supported the event; Sunnycrest Nursery, Blend, The Cellar, KP Corral, Close to Home Espresso, The KP Veterans, The Mustard Seed Project, Key Center Fire Station, Key Center Library and everyone from our own Two Waters.   We look forward to another great event in August 2020. Please be on the lookout for more information next spring!

Volunteer Spotlight Many hours of work goes into supporting and keeping things running smoothly at Two Waters. We truly appreciate all our volunteers! TWAA has some of the best support the Key Peninsula could ask for and we like to spotlight those who go above and beyond.

This month our Volunteer in the Spotlight is Cathy Williams.

Cathy has been a member of Two Waters since 2017 and currently serves as our Treasurer. She has lived on the Key Peninsula since 2010 and has lived in Western Washington for over 45 years. Cathy is a musician and singer who plays the piano and guitar and is a member of the South Sounds Classical Choir based in Tacoma. Cathy's love of all things folk music was the drive behind creating Hootenanny at the Mustard Seed Project. Every 2nd Tuesday of each month folk enthusiasts join to sing and play songs with banjos, guitars, mouth harps, harmonicas, ukuleles -- you name it! Cathy is also a member of the local ukulele group. She has a shared love for all things art, but has a special place in her heart for performing arts. Her love for music and drive for including it in our community makes her a great addition to the Two Waters family.

Volunteer Opportunities Looking to get involved with art in our community? We have many volunteer opportunities at Two Waters.

● Do you have a knack for writing proposals? We can always use help writing grants!  ● Do you have a special art skill you want to share with our community? We would love for you to teach

a class!  ● Do you love to write! We are always looking for someone to help write content for our website and

newsletters!
