Minnesota Intergovernmental Retreat
The Chamber and the East Grand Forks Economic Development Authority teamed up for an Intergovernmental Retreat on Thursday, February 27th. Local leaders talked about the City of East Grand Forks strategic plan. There was considerable discussion on the 1% Quality of Life Sales Tax for new baseball fields, upgrades to the Civic Center, etc. Finding the right blend between private funding, state support and local support will be the key in ultimately winning EGF voter support at the polls assuming the State Legislature approves the project.
The group heard updates from Polk County Commissioner, Warren Strandell and the NCTC EGF campus lead Brian Huschle.
District 1 State Senator Mark Johnson and District 1B House member Deb Kiel joined the group via phone and talked about border cities legislation, business climate issues and the 1% sales tax.
Market Capture Results to be released on March 19th
The Chamber and partner organizations will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. on March 19th at the Chamber office. At that time the high level results will be presented and several tools will be uploaded to a web site for GF/EGF businesses to use. Information for the general public and potential new businesses will also be on the site. A series of meetings will be announced and be held in April and May to educate various audiences on how to make the best use of the information.
The Chamber Board of Directors Visits Cirrus Designs
The Chamber Board of Directors met on Thursday at Cirrus Designs in Grand Forks. Bill King and Brandon Palvish had a great presentation and tour of this magnificent facility. 2020 Career Conversations
About 150 UND, NCTC and Crookston college students registered to “shadow” area business people during the annual Career Conversations Week. More than 60 businesses listed job-shadowing opportunities on the Northern Valley Careers web site and students responded in a big way filling many of the shadowing opportunities offered.
“Historically, 60% of the students who participated in the career conversation experience indicated they are more likely to seek employment in the Grand Forks region after graduation because of the job shadowing experience, which is why we do this,” according to Barry Wilfahrt, Chamber President.
Job Service, The Chamber of Commerce GF/EGF and the Greater Grand Forks Economic Development Corporation coordinate the Career Conversations week. The Career Conversations week is part of a much larger community wide workforce development effort. For several years, the Chamber of Commerce GF/EGF, Greater Grand Forks Economic Development Corporation and Job Service have collaborated to involve more than 75 local human resource professionals to develop and implement an ever-evolving plan to help meet local employers growing workforce needs.

Porter Named Associate Dean For Student Affairs & Admissions At TheUnd School Of Medicine & Health Sciences
Jim Porter, Ph.D., associate professor in UND’s Department of Biomedical Sciences, has been named associate dean for Student Affairs & Admissions at the UND School of
Medicine & Health Sciences (SMHS). A 21-year veteran of the SMHS, Dr. Porter is filling the role previously held by Joycelyn Dorscher, M.D., who is leaving the School on February 19, 2020.
A pharmacologist by training, Porter earned his doctorate from the Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Neb., in 1993. He then worked as a postdoctoral fellow for both the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association in Nebraska and Ohio before making his way to North Dakota in 1999.

He will also monitor medical student academic progress and professionalism; support residency applications and medical students’ annual residency “match” process; serve as a member of the School’s Executive, Admissions, and Governance committees as an advocate for students; act as the SMHS Title IX liaison; and maintain Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation standards.
RiverView Health Receives Four-Star Rating from Medicare
RiverView Health received a four-star rating in last week’s Hospital Compare report from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The rating reflects measured performance data from 2019.
Hospital Compare is part of Medicare’s Hospital Quality Initiative that uses a variety of tools to help hospitals improve the quality of care they deliver. Hospital Compare shares information on over 4,000 Medicare-certified hospitals. The overall hospital rating ranges from one to five stars. The more stars, the better a hospital performed on the available quality measures. The most common overall hospital rating is three stars.
The overall hospital rating includes a variety of more than 100 measures, divided into seven categories: Mortality, Safety of Care, Readmission, Patient Experience, Effectiveness of Care, Timeliness of Care, and Efficient Use of Medical Imaging.
While RiverView is proud of its ranking in all of the categories, hearing from the people it serves in the Survey of Patients’ Experiences is the most powerful.
“Our team is committed to quality care and top-notch patient experience,’’ stated RiverView President/CEO Carrie Michalski.

60 volunteers are encouraging businesses to invest in The Chamber during The Chamber’s annual Spring Membership Drive, which kicks off March 10th. Our teams are calling on non-chamber member businesses in the community to share the benefits of being a member. All volunteers represent businesses who are already chamber members!
Volunteers are rewarded for signing up new members during the Drive and receive prizes such as gift cards, gift baskets, electronics, etc., generously donated by chamber member businesses.
A few of the member benefits include a free marketing landing page, 4 directory listings, lots of incredible networking events and many professional and personal opportunities for growth through Chamber organized seminars and leadership training programs.
The strength of The Chamber GF/EGF is due in part to our members, and in turn, The Chamber acts as “The Voice of Business” working to Inform, Promote, Advocate, Connect and Educate our members & community.
Do you know of a business we could share the chamber membership opportunity with? If you would like to join The Chamber or know of a business our volunteers should call on...CONTACT EMBERLY LIETZ, Membership Director.

DIFFERING VALUE SYSTEMS Much has been said regarding Generation Y, the Millennials, and much of it has not been very positive. Too bad, because by watching the generations before them, Gen Y learned much about what is and is not important in life. Gen Y developed different values and is pursuing them. As is often the case, the younger are misunderstood by the older because of differing value systems.
GENERATIONAL REBOOT Now, here comes the next generation, Gen Z or the “iGen.” There has been very little negativity about this generation so far, and for good reasons. This is the most exciting “generational reboot” to emerge so far, and they have the potential to positively shake-up everyone’s status quo.
Understanding more about how to engage the newest generations, to leverage their strengths, and to not get left in the generational dust.
