1 Generally MS is considering acquiring a site north of Stockholm in the municipality of
Gävle. The area is called Stackbo and is planned for construction of Data halls.
COWI AB have been asked to conduct the Due Diligence for MS. In order to get
some information about the geotechnical conditions COWI have performed an
overall geotechnical survey on the site.
2 Object The site is located in the municipality of Gävle, approximately 15 km south west
of central Gävle and approximately 170 km north of Stockholm. For location, see
Figure 1.
Figure 1. Location of site Stackbo.

3 Purpose The main purpose of the investigation was to create an overview of the soil
layers, the groundwater conditions and the technical properties of the soil.
Furthermore, the purpose was to identify possible adverse geotechnical issues
and recommendations for additional site investigation.
The following report presents the results of the geotechnical field and laboratory
investigations, carried out in the form of drawings and appendices.
Description of the geotechnical conditions is reported in a separate document,
entitled “Geotechnical interpretation report (GIR), Overall geotechnical
investigation, Project Aqua, Stackbo, Gävle, Sweden”, project no A070065 and
date of issue 19.03.2019.
4 Project basis
4.1 Previous surveys No geotechnical investigation has, what is known, previously been conducted in
the area.
4.2 Basis for the investigation As the basis for planning, conducting and reporting of geotechnical field
investigation, the following basis has been used:
› Geological maps from Swedish Geological Survey (SGU)
› Digital substrate with existing wires and cables
› Digital basic map obtained by the municipally of Gävle
5 Governing documents This report connects to SS-EN 1997-1 and associated national annex and TK Geo
13 (The Swedish Transport Administration's technical requirements for
geotechnical constructions).
For more information regarding governing documents for specific field and
laboratory investigations, see Table 1-Table 3.

6 Geotechnical category The surveys are conducted in accordance with the requirements for applying
Geotechnical Category 2 (GK2).
7 Existing conditions
7.1 Topography and surface conditions The site consists of undeveloped, forested land. The investigation area is divided
into two smaller areas; Area 1 and Area 2. For orientation, see Figure 2.
There are no known buildings on the site. Some gravel roads are crossing the
site, for example the road “Kabelvägen” and the road “Farfarsvägen”. The creek
“Valsjöbäcken” crosses the western part of the site from south to north.

limit. The red boundary lines represent the investigated areas.

11
The topography within the investigated areas is generally flat. The investigation
areas are shown as red boundary lines in Figure 2. Ground levels at the location
of conducted boreholes in Area 1 range from about +65 to +68 in west to about
+70 to +74 in east. In the southern part, Area 2, the ground levels vary between
+68 and +76.
The forest is dominated by pine and spruce. The site consists of a larger wetland
area in the eastern part of the site and there is a lot of large block and stones in
the surface. Figure 3 shows photos from the area.
Figure 3. Photos from the site.
7.2 Existing constructions There is a power line crossing the site from southeast to northwest. The power
line separates the two investigation areas.
8 Positioning Measurements in Area 1 have been performed by Metria AB and in Area 2 by
Orbicon AB. The measurements are reported in the coordinate system SWEREF
99 16 30 and in the height system RH 2000.

9 Geotechnical surveys
9.1 Generally Geotechnical surveys have been performed on two different occasions.
The field investigation in Area 1 was conducted in September 2018. The field
work was carried out by Ronny Kratz and Robert Halvarsson, COWI AB. The
results were reported in a Soil Interpretation Report (SIR), document no
A070065-03-04-SIR-STACKBO-002 with a date of issue 23.11.2018.
The field investigation in Area 2 was conducted in January 2019. The field work
was carried out by Magnus Kippel under the direction of Joakim Wallgren at
Orbicon AB.
The field investigations were carried out with a geotechnical site investigation
rig. Sampling and handling of soil sample was performed in accordance with
Swedish standards for the respective investigation method.
9.2 Field investigation in Area 1 The geotechnical surveys in Area 1 were carried out in 11 boreholes, named
18CW301-18CW303, 18CW303B and 18CW304-18CW310. The location of the
investigation points was planned by future construction and availability for the
drilling rig due to thick forest and vegetation.
Table 4 below shows which field investigation have been conducted with each
method.
Table 4. Geotechnical field investigations in Area 1.
Investigation method Number Remark
Weight sounding (Vim) 10 pcs The soundings have stopped at a depth of
between 0.3 m and 2.2 m below ground level.
Percussion sounding with
registration (Slb) 8 pcs
The soundings have stopped at a depth of
between 0.5 and 3.6 m below ground level.
Soil/rock probing (Jb2) 2 pcs
The depth of rock was found at about 5.2 m and
about 10.1 m below ground level. The probing in
borehole 18CW308 has not been made to a depth
of a minimum 3 m in the rock due to the capacity
of the air compressor and lack of water.
Disturbed soil sampling
Auger drilling (Skr) 7 pcs
Disturbed soil sampling and soil description in the
field have been conducted to a depth of between
0.9 m and 2.2 m below ground level.

13
The results of the surveys are presented on plan and section drawings, see
appendix.
9.3 Field investigation in Area 2 The geotechnical surveys in Area 1 were carried out in 11 boreholes, named
CW3201-CW3211. The location of the investigation points was planned by future
construction and availability for the drilling rig due to thick forest and
vegetation.
Table 5 below shows which field investigation have been conducted with each
method.
Table 5. Geotechnical field investigations in Area 2.
Investigation method Number Remark
Weight sounding (Vim) 11 pcs The soundings have stopped at a depth of
between 0.7 m and 1.4 m below ground level.
Ram sounding (HfA) 4 pcs The soundings have stopped at a depth of
between 0.8 m and 1.8 m below ground level.
Soil/rock probing (Jb2) 11 pcs
The depth to solid rock was found between 1.5 m
and 7.5 m below ground level. The probing in
borehole CW3203, CW3209 and CW3210 has not
been made to a depth of a minimum 3 m in the
rock due to the capacity of the air compressor
and lack of water.
Disturbed soil sampling
Auger drilling (Skr) 11 pcs
Disturbed soil sampling and soil description in the
field have been conducted to a depth of between
1.1 m and 3.0 m below ground level.
The results of the surveys are presented on plan and section drawings, see
appendix.
9.4 Calibration and certification Calibration of the geotechnical site investigation rig is saved by COWI and can
be sent to the customer upon request.
No abnormities were noted during the field surveys.

10 Geotechnical laboratory testing
10.1 Laboratory testing in Area 1 Geotechnical laboratory tests have been carried out at MRM, a Civil and

11 Hydrogeological surveys A free groundwater table was observed in 2 open boreholes when conducting the
field investigation in Area 1. The groundwater levels are recorded on boreholes
drawing, see appendix.
12 Valuation of examination Due to the weather conditions when conducting the field investigation in Area 2,
with approximately 0,1 m of snow on the ground, the soil classification in the
upper soil layers was difficult to determine. The top layer of humus was
estimated to be about 0,1 m.
During conducting the ram soundings in Area 2 an error with the ram
registration was observed. The ram registration (HfA) in borehole CW3204 was
counted twice. This has been solved by adjusting the raw data files afterwards.
Otherwise the investigations have been performed by the current standards.
