From the Principal Here we are with the March 2019 edition of AusIS Newsletter. The month of March 2019 was eventful. We have had the most attractive and accomplishing event of the year, the Annual Concert of the school. Participated by all classes, it was a colourful and joyous program with outstanding performance by students in front of their parents and invited guests. This cultural extravaganza was the outcome of careful planning and deliberate execution by teachers and student’s team who put up lots of hard work in making the display a grand success. I am so proud of them. We have had the week long Book Fair which generated great interest for the students, teachers and the parents. The younger children enjoyed Rocket reading, Buddy reading, Grandparents day, student’s quiz etc. It was full of fun. Middle school and Senior classes participated in Inter School Football, DHAMUN and CAS trips etc, all aimed at developing healthy personal, intellectual and social life. AusIS is a great place for learning. Side by side with their academic endeavour students are exposed to enriching co-curricular to achieve well rounded education. Year 4 Educational Excursion to Sonargaon

February 24th was a very exciting day for the students of Year 4. This day, they went for an excursion to Panam city, Sonargaon. This activity

is related to the unit “Where we are in place and time”. The objective of the field trip was to give our learners the experience of an explorer

and to help them realize that exploration leads to new understanding.

The trip was an excellent experience for our young learners as they have seen the ancient architectural structures of Panam City influenced by

the culture brought in our country by the famous explorer Ibn Battuta of Morocco. The students had an excellent opportunity to explore the

Museum at Sonargaon which helped them to understand how explorers from other countries have influenced the livelihood of the people of

ancient Bengal. We had expert guides with us who shared appropriate and accurate history of the place in English as they guided the students

through those historical lanes. The students had a magical experience as they imagined how magnificent life was in that era of trade and

progress. They exhibited their research skill as they were divided into different groups and investigated the place as any explorer would. The

students enjoyed the sights and also noted the important information about that place as they prepared for an assessment related to the activity

later. Excursions of this standard always help the students to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the very relevant units they

inquire into. Our students have shown excellent self-management skill and research skill throughout this activity. Their behavioral courtesy

has caught positive attention of the many visitors of the venue of the excursion.

Book Week

We celebrated the week of 4th to 7th March as “Book Week”. The purpose of this week was to incite and appreciate students’ interest for

reading. This year, the theme for the week was “Reading is My Secret Power”.

The week was interactive throughout with different events engaging the school community like; buddy reading, pajama day, reading rocket

program, parents- grandparents day etc. We appreciate the parents’ and grandparents’ enthusiastic participation.

We invited an educational agency to host a book fair throughout the week. It provided students an opportunity to see more books, to choose

appropriate books and to read more. Students enthusiastically bought books to quench their thirst of knowledge. This agency also arranged a

quiz competition for the students. The book week concluded with dress-up as the favorite book character and parade followed by prize and

certificate distribution ceremony for the quiz winners from each year level (Year 1- Year 5).

Health & PE MYP demands academic preparation with a requirement for physical exertion

that can contribute to a healthy lifestyle. Students develop understanding of a

healthy lifestyle with a focus on issues that affect personal as well as

community’s well-being. They also learn to minimise and manage conflict,

build self-esteem to support healthy relationships. Our objective is to inculcate

healthy, safe and active lifestyle in our students.

As such we provide opportunities for students to undertake new challenges

through competitive sports, personal athletic programmes and endurance events.

Our students have participated in 2 group matches under 16 boys’ category with

International Hope School Bangladesh and Chittagong Grammar School

Dhaka. They have won against IHSB!

Participation in the Dhaka Model United Nation XII

We are happy that nine Year 9 and 12 students volunteered to attend 12th DHAMUN event at International

School of Dhaka on 22nd and 23rd March 2019 and put a lot of effort in representing our school. We are truly

proud that our students are internationally minded and take action in resolving global issues. Some of them have

shared their reflections on the event:

“The experience of DHAMUN has made me more confident to give public speeches, and it also allowed me to

meet other students from a lot of different schools in Dhaka. DHAMUN really encouraged me to think critically

and also collaborate with others.”

“Going to DHAMUN has improved my research and organisational skills. I have learnt about a lot of new things

and found the debates really interesting, which prevented the committee sessions from being unbearably boring.”

“Despite having been very nervous about DHAMUN at first, it turned out into an event that taught me how to

debate ideas, collaborate with others to reach a solution and it helped me build confidence in my speaking skills.

At the end, I was happy to have been awarded an honourable mention for my effort in DHAMUN.”

“Attending DHAMUN along with my fellow classmates was a life-changing experience as it allowed my self-

management and social skills to truly reach their peak. DHAMUN was my first MUN and it isn‟t certainly my

last. I hope to bring several awards to AusIS in the future as well as earn respect in the progress.”

“This DHAMUN wasn‟t my first one, however, it was my first MUN in the Hague format and I have learnt a lot

from it. My biggest takeaway from the whole experience is that teamwork can be utterly destroyed by a single

person.”

“DHAMUN was the first time amazing experience for me and was far less uptight and boring than I had

expected. I am looking forward to attending more MUNs in the future.”

“My first MUN in the format of DHAMUN was really fun. I met new people, learnt new things and overcame

fears. I am definitely looking forward to more MUNs.”

the most remarkable and successful event of the academic year

wherein all the students from PYP to MYP to DP & WACE

IB DP Visual Arts Exhibition On the 5th of March, Jessica Anna John, a student of IB DP Year

2 presented her Visual Arts work done during the two-year

programme through an Exhibition. Her art work focused mainly

on the theme „Women Empowerment‟ wherein she showcased the

struggles a woman faces due to her sexuality. She presented the

theme through her paintings using different mediums and also

through sculpture. Her art work represented different situations in

a woman‟s life and gave a strong message that women needs to

be heard and every woman has the power to achieve the

impossible without being judged by the society.

Book Week

AusIS organises Book Week every year to promote reading habits

among the students and this year the Book Week was from 3rd to

7th March. Books are the best friends a student can have in his/her

life and somebody very rightly said “Every reader lives a thousand

lives.” Those students who have the reading habit are far more

happy, contented and knowledgeable as it is not only a wonderful

mental stimulation but also reduces a lot of stress. During the Book

Week, a variety of fictional and non-fictional books were displayed

for the senior students. Apart from this there were Encyclopaedia,

Autobiography, Biography and General Knowledge books which

instigated a lot of interest in the DP and WACE students. They not

only surfed through the books but also purchased the books of their

choice.

DP WACE Science Fair &

Three Way Conference Science Fair was one of the noteworthy events in Term 3 put up by

the IB DP and WACE students on the 13th March. All the students

participated and showcased their working models ranging from RC

Planes and Water Boat to Mars Rover. The students presented

working models on Wind Tunnel, Kidney and Harmful Effects of

Smoking. The entire school community along with the parents

witnessed the Science Fair. There was lot of appreciation from the

audience towards the innovative models made and the presentation

skills. Besides the Science Fair, the Three-Way Conference was

organised for the parents of IB DP Year 1 and WACE Year 1 and 2

students to discuss the academic development and progress of their

ward in Term 3. ManageBac an innovative software was introduced

to the parents of IB DP Year 1 students to get an update on their

child‟s assignments, assessments and ongoing teaching-learning

process in the classroom.
