grounds off the south-west, or the English Channel and the Baie de Seine” says Brendan.
“We had been scalloping with the Mary Catherine for the past ten years but we were limited in the distances we could travel” Conor says. “She would only hold 500 bags whereas the Lady Lu can safely hold between 1,000 and 1,200 bags.”
That makes a big difference for the company especially if they are going to the Baie de Seine to fish, with the ‘Lady Lu being able to stay fishing for a seven-day trip whereas the ‘Mary Catherine’ would only allow them to fish a four-day trip.
The ‘Lady Lu’ will fish with four to five of a crew with skippers Conor (30) and Josh Power (26) taking it in turn at the wheel on trips.
Brendan is full of praise for both his young skippers.
“Josh is one of the best young skippers in recent years, that’s for
sure. Both himself and Conor are the youngest skippers in the fleet and both have proven that they are well capable.”
Conor started skippering on the ‘Mary Catherine’ around 10 years ago at the tender age of 21 and Josh came into the job at around the same age five years ago.
“We’re moving on with the younger generation” says Brendan.
The ‘Lady Lu’ was built by Visser Shipyard (Den Helder), Holland in 1995. At 24 metres long with a beam of 7 metres and a depth (draft) of 4.5 metres the vessel has recently been overhauled by Luyt Groep at Den Oever in Holland.
Powered a 221kW Mitsubishi main engine driving a 2.3 metre propeller through a Renchers gearbox with a 10:1 reduction.
The engineroom also houses two DAF Silent engines for auxiliary power and upfront under the shelter is housed a small Deutz engine for shore supply.

MARCH 2018 THE SKIPPER Mel 4544 Lady Lu THE SKIPPER MARCH 2018
The first Twinseas catamaran has arrived in Ireland. The 9.73
metre long ‘MEL’ was built under licence by Maver Boats, Anstruther, Scotland and delivered in January to Anthony Berry from Wexford.
At 4.2 metres wide and with a draft of one metre the ‘MEL’ will be whelk potting off the Wexford coast.
The ‘MEL’ is powered by two IVECO FPT. Nef 67. MNA. M15 marine engines, complete with panels, which are coupled to Twin Disc. MG. 5050A. 2;1 marine gearboxes supplied by Kirwan Marine.
The ‘MEL’ is a replacement for his previous boat, the ‘Aurora” which was also a catamaran hull powered by twin petrol outboards.
Anthony began his fishing career with his father Jim and inherited his boat, also called the ‘Aurora’. He then moved to the ‘Aurora II’ and after that he bought his third boat and called that “The Aurora” The ‘MEL’ will be fished by himself and partner Mel Birchall, who is the deckhand. Mel started her fishing career ten years ago with Anthony.
All safety equipment was supplied
be Kehoe Marine, Kilmore Quay Derek Noble supplied the 14” stainless Hydroslave pot hauler which is fitted in a flat position to the side of the wheelhouse.
“It’s a bit experimental” explains Anthony. “When I was over in Scotland I noticed that a lot of the potters had their pot haulers on the flat and I thought it would be an idea to try it out.”
Anthony and Mel are hoping to get their new vessel fishing soon and the Skipper wishes them the all the best in the future.

BEST WISHES AND SAFE FISHING
TO ANTHONY & MEL ON THEIR NEW VESSEL
Hauling power will be provided for by an 8-drum Luyt’s electric driven trawl winch which is housed under the wheelhouse. The winch was extensively overhauled by the yard and has been left in perfect condition.
A WASSP multi-beam previously fitted to the ‘Mary Catherine’ was installed when the boat was in dry dock at the Luyt yard. The motion
sensor was upgraded by Barry Electronics, who also supplied electronic equipment to the refurbished wheelhouse.
Brendan and Richard Moore will be in charge of gear and shore maintenance of the Lady Lu between fishing trips.
Along with the ‘Mary Catherine’ WD 7, which has been converted for beam
trawling, the Moore family also fish razors with the ‘Boy Bradley’ WD 303.
When renaming the ‘Lady Lu’ from ‘Glaube’ (meaning Believe when translated) Brendan decided to name the boat after his wife Lucy.
Brendan wishes to thank Art Kavanagh – Marine Finance Consultant, Noel O’Regan –
Promara and Dermot Breen at AIB for helping to put the finances and deal together to purchase their new vessel. He also thanked the Luyt Groep for the expert refurbishment and the New Ross Boat Yard for helping them through their Certificate of Compliance.
The Skipper would like to wish the Lady Lu, her owners and all her crew good and safe fishing in the future.
