Dear Parents/Caregivers It was great to watch the boys in action at the Relay for Life last weekend. Unlike activities such as sports or performing arts, we encourage everyone to do something in order to help others. The response from the boys, the staff and the whole HIBS community is always wonderful and this year was no exception. At the time of writing, the money is still being collected, so I have no idea of the amount raised. This year the Relay was earlier than usual and the weather often acted against those wanting to go out and collect at places like the markets. Whatever the amount raised, the Cancer Society will benefit significantly, as will the boys themselves. There is a benefit to us when we help others. I have been away on a few International Service trips with groups from HIBS and it is not unusual for boys, on their return, to say that they had found the experience so rewarding that they will look to get involved in other service projects when they move on from school. When we do good for others, the recipients of our kindness aren’t the only ones reaping the benefits. There is much in it for us as well. Helping others will actually make you feel great. Studies show that when people donated to charity, the mesolimbic system, the portion of the brain responsible for feelings of reward, was triggered. The brain also releases feel-good chemicals and spurs you to perform more kind acts — something psychologists call “helper’s high.”

People who volunteer have been found to have higher self-esteem and overall well-being. Experts explain that as feelings of social connectedness increase, so does your self-esteem. The benefits of volunteering also depend on your consistency. So, the more regularly you volunteer, the more confidence you’ll be able to cultivate. Being a force for good in a friend’s life can help build a lasting bond. When you help others, you give off positive vibes, which can rub off on your peers and improve your friendships, according to a study by the National Institutes of Health. Both parties will contribute to maintaining a mutually beneficial dynamic. Having a positive impact on someone else could help you change your own outlook and attitude. Experts say that performing acts of kindness boosts your mood and ultimately makes you more optimistic and positive. Helping someone out can leave you feeling rewarded and fulfilled. People who participate in volunteer work feel more empowered than those who do not. According to a survey by the United Health Group, 96 percent of people who volunteered over the last 12 months said volunteering enriches their sense of purpose. Whether with a large group of people, like our HIBS population, or just between two friends exchanging words of advice, helping people creates a feeling of community. Face-to-face activities such as volunteering as a coach or in an old peoples’ home, can help form relationships which otherwise might be lacking, according to the Mental Health Foundation.

Giving will help you find your inner peace. If you have a lot that’s wearing you down, giving back could help clear your head. In a study by United Health Group, 78 percent of people who volunteered over a 12-month period said they felt that their charitable activities lowered their stress. They were also more calm and peaceful than people who didn’t participate in volunteer work. Helping others gives you perspective on your own situation, and teaches you to be appreciative of what you have. The Global One Foundation describes volunteering as a way to “promote a deeper sense of gratitude as we recognise more of what is already a blessing or gift or positive in our life.” Helping others can teach you to help yourself. If you’ve been through a tough experience or just have a case of the blues, the “activism cure” is a great way to get back to feeling like yourself, according to research from the University of Texas. “Volunteer work improves access to social and psychological resources, which are known to counter negative moods,” the study read. Finally, kindness is contagious, according to a study by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the University of Cambridge and University of Plymouth in the United Kingdom. “When we see someone else help another person it gives us a good feeling,” the study states, “Which in turn causes us to go out and do something altruistic ourselves.” The benefits of making an effort in support of the Relay for Life go well beyond the amount of money raised. It was pleasing to see so many students make the effort in order to maximise those benefits.

“The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.” Barack Obama

THE VAN BAARLE CONSTRUCTION HIBS ARGENTINIAN FOOTBALL AND SPANISH LANGUAGE TOUR 2017

On 16 April, 18 HIBS footballers and five Spanish language students accompanied by three staff members and five family members will embark on the trip of a lifetime to Argentina.

The touring party will visit Buenos Aires, Rossario and the world famous Iguazu Falls. The footballers will have two elite training sessions with one of the country’s top football teams Boca Juniors and will play four games. The Spanish language students will have five immersion days in Argentinian schools. The party will also undertake two community service visits to orphan-ages in the Buenos Aires region and they will attend the ANZAC Day Service at the Australian Embassy.

As part of the fundraising for the trip a Naming Rights donation raffle was held. The winning ticket was purchased by Rudy van Baarle who has been a contributor to fundraising for 15 years, having had three sons at the school. This was the first draw he had won.

NAMING OF UNIFORM Please ensure that ALL items of uniform are clearly named, including shoes. We have already received a lot of unnamed uniform in lost property.

TENNIS Over the weekend the NZ U16 boys team of George Stoupe, Chris Zhang and Reece Falck finished 9th overall in the ITF Asia / Oceania Zone qualifying tournament. The boys were drawn into the initial “pool of death” where they finished 3rd but then missed the opportunity to play in the 1-8 playoffs. They showed they were the top of the 9-16 playoffs with some excellent matches and determined wins. Well done to the team and coach Marcel Vos!

SAILING At the Wellington Schools Sailing Regatta, in the College section, Noah Stock came 1st in the Opti Open Fleet, Hugo Blair 2nd out of two in the Opti Green fleet, James Martel came 3rd in the Open Starling fleet and Ben Callear sailed a P class.

TOUCH Congratulations to Benjamin Grenfell who has been selected to represent New Zealand in Australia in September 2017 for the U16 Mixed Touch Team.

SWIMMING At the Swimming New Zealand's Division 2 meet in Rotorua, Seth Wilson came away with a genuine short course 400 freestyle time (a qualifying time was a time converted from long course). The time qualifies Seth for the New Zealand Secondary Schools meet in September. Seth maintained his 200 IM time and took 8.5 seconds off his 1500 freestyle time.

It is in the 1500 free that he is hoping to qualify for Nationals 2017 and this was an important stepping stone towards that goal for Seth.

ATHLETICS Finn Seeds has continued his amazing form through the recent summer season. After his gold medal at last year’s National Road Race in December, he competed at the Colgate Games in January where he won the 800m in a record time of 2.06 (2 mins 6 seconds), he also won the 1500m, taking an incredible 9 seconds off the previous record with his time of 4 mins 19. He won the U16 3000m in 9.34, and showed great versatility to pick up silver in the 400m with a personal best 54 seconds. At the recent Athletics Wellington Champs, he won both the U16 800 and 1500m – as a 13 year old.

HUTT ZONE ATHLETICS On 10 March, the HIBS Athletics team successfully defended the Campbell Shield at the Hutt Zone Athletics Championship. It was a great team effort with almost all team members contributing points on the day. The team finished the day on 170 points, over 50 points clear of Hutt Valley High School in second place. Standout performances came from Leyton Tapa and Finn Seeds who both broke meet rec-ords in the Under 14 grade. Leyton ran well to break the 300m record in a time of 38.43 seconds. Finn Seeds broke his own record by ten seconds in the 1500m and broke a long standing 800m record by more than 5 seconds in running 2.02.40. Other event winners in their respective grades were: Finn Ihimaera-Smiler (100m), Ethan McKenzie (Long Jump), Rufus Rusholme Cobb (Discus), Andrew Ledger (800m, 1500m), Jack Laird (400m, Long Jump), Logan Slee (3000m) and Finn Bamber (Javelin).
