New $10,000 Scholarship Established to Honor Former Meridian Doctor

Dr. Russell D. Holt spent years practicing medicine and helping residents of Bosque County live better lives. Now, more than 50 years after his death in 1959, the former operator of the Holt Hospital in Meridian is still giving.

Judith Holt McNeill of Stephenville, the daughter of the longtime Bosque County physician, made sure of that on Feb. 2 when she presented Ranger College student Charlesy “Ally” Little with the inaugural Russell D. Holt Memorial Scholarship. The $10,000 scholarship was created to provide tuition assistance to all eligible students, including those in Bosque County, entering the Vocational Nursing program at Ranger College’s Erath County campus.

Future students interested in applying for the Russell D. Holt Memorial Scholarship should contact the Student Services office at Ranger College Erath County Center as soon as possible by calling (254) 965-8875.

Lady Rangers Hold Skills Camp for Local Players Members of the Ranger College Lady Rangers warm up with local girls prior to holding a mini skills camp in February. During the clinic, the RC athletes worked with youngsters on the fundamentals of fielding, catching and pitching..

The Texas Rangers and Houston Astros weren’t the only teams in the Lone Star State to head to Spring Training in February. Thanks to the Ranger College women’s softball team, preseason drills also became a reality for members of the Ranger Youth Softball Association. More than a dozen young players joined members of the Lady Rangers at Ron Butler Field for a mini skills camp last Thursday.

During the clinic, members of the Ranger College women’s team worked with the young players, instructing them on ways to improve their defensive skills with drills on proper footwork and fielding. The Lady Rangers also spent time helping the campers – ranging in age from 8 to 12 - learn the fundamentals of catching and pitching, as well as the correct methods to field and throw the ball to the infield bases.

Ranger College head coach Jeff Jackson said his team was thrilled to participate in the camp.

The RC Speech and Debate team, which is coached by John Mikolajcik and Kevin "P-Kev" Daily, will return to action on March 11-13 when they compete in the Phi Rho Pi Regionals in Tyler, TX.
