MARCH MADNESS AS FROZEN RETURNS

As we seemingly drift back in and out of winter, and

try not to remember our incorrect Academy Award predictions (ahem), we can set our eyes upon all things frozen. No, that’s “Frozen”, as in the upcoming new release from Walt Disney Frozen Fever. Just when we finally had “let it go”, we now must brace ourselves for the March 13th release of the hugely popular Disney sequel to Frozen. Yes, it’s back to the big screen for Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf, and Anna. In Frozen Fever, it’s Anna’s birthday and Elsa and Kristoff are determined to give her the best celebration ever, but when Elsa catches a cold, her powers may put more than just the party at risk. The film will no doubt be one of the biggest spring-time releases of

all times. The first film grossed more at the box office and in subsequent rentals than any other Walt Disney film before. Be warned and prepared for a new tune in which children will sing endlessly.

If ever you were a fan of the 1980’s TV show Small Wonder with its lovable but crude child-robot Vicki, (and who wasn’t?) then you’ll feel somewhat nostalgic for the upcoming March release of Chappie. Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there’s one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.

Not to be outdone by Frozen Fever, Twentieth Century Fox releases its new upcoming animated comedy, Home. With A-list celebs like Rihanna, Jim

Parsons, and Steve Martin lending their voices for the characters, Home promises just as much mild action and humor as its competitor. When Earth is taken over by the overly-confident Boov, an alien race in search of a new place to call home, all humans are promptly relocated, while all Boov get busy reorganizing the planet. But when one resourceful girl, Tip (Rihanna), manages to avoid capture, she finds herself the accidental accomplice of a banished Boov named Oh (Jim Parsons). The two fugitives realize there’s a lot more at stake than intergalactic relations as they embark on the road trip of a lifetime.

March also brings another surprise to the big screen. A big name. Al Pacino returns to the box office starring in Danny

Collins. Inspired by a true story, Al Pacino stars as aging 1970’s rocker Danny Collins, who can’t give up his hard-living ways. But when his manager (Christopher Plummer) uncovers a 40 year-old undelivered letter written to him by John Lennon, he decides to change course and embarks on a heartfelt journey to rediscover his family, find true love and begin a second act.

So brave the end of the cold weather, grab some hot popcorn and settle in for a month of incredible movie viewing!

Jimmy Ray Sorrells

FUN FACT: After sweeping theaters world-wide like a snowstorm for over half a year, Frozen has grossed a whopping $1.219 billion at the box office! According to Variety, the film raked in $400 million-plus in the U.S. alone and $194 million in Japan. Frozen has also become the top-grossing animated flick ever.

Local artist, Diane Bolinger, says she learned to draw as a way to speak. “As

a child I had my own language and it wasn’t English – it was gibberish,” says Diane. Her older sister tried her best to translate for Diane’s parents but eventually they came up with a different method of understanding what their daughter was saying. They put butcher paper along the wall of their home so that Diane could draw as her method of communicating. That was the beginning of a life-long love of art.

Bolinger’s family moved to Weatherford when she was six, and she attended Weatherford ISD. After graduating from the University of Texas at San Antonio with a BFA in Painting, she quickly packed up and moved to New York to pursue her dream of becoming the next great artist. She held many jobs while in New York including temping at the World Trade Center as a secretary and working in restaurants and bars, but on the side she still chased her dream. After some

minor success with a few shows, greeting cards and commissions, she was offered a position at Evergreen Painting Studios.

They renovated the city’s most beautiful and beloved landmarks including Radio City Music Hall, The Chrysler Building, etc., … Diane felt truly at home. She was made Union Foreman in a time when very few female foremen were in the renovation business. She loved her job. But, it’s “funny how life works,” says Diane. When her son Jack was born in 2001, everything changed. She moved back to Weatherford when Jack was three and got her teaching certificate. She then began teaching and adjusting to a life in Texas once again. Diane was thrilled when she got the chance to teach art at Weatherford High School alongside her mentor and former art teacher, Kathleen Cunning.Next year will be her tenth year of teaching and her eighth year at Weatherford High School.

Apart from teaching, Diane is an exceptional artist as well. From photography to scratch-art, ceramics, watercolor and pencil … she is accomplished in each art form. But, as a subject matter, she always comes back to trees. “Trees can tell so many stories,” says Diane. “They can represent people, families,

heartache, redemption, death and rebirth. They remind me of my childhood playing in the forest and the sounds and smells of the earth. They are a beautiful metaphor.” Bolinger loves to paint in the colors of fauvism; bright, flooded, saturated with color and line. Diane also has a photo collection book titled 50

squares of Caddo Lake that may be purchased through Amazon or from her website. She has recently added limited bookings for personal photography shoots by reservation.

Diane’s son Jack, who is now an eighth grader at Hall, is also a gifted photographer and has [

March 14th at 3pm The World Famous Platters Tribute Show from

Branson will perform all of those great songs like “The Magic Touch”, “The Great Pretender”, “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes”, “Only You”, “Harbor Lights” and more! Relive the Romance with one of the most successful groups of the 60’s Rock-n-Roll era. Mr. Bill Brooks and the one and only Chisai Childs will thrill you on the first half. Chisai’s road to Branson started with her birth in Tokyo, and that explains her first name. She started entertaining at the age of six. After being named Miss Talented Teen in 1965, she toured seven countries, entertaining service men at USO shows. Chisai owned her own dance studio for many years, teaching all types of dancing from ballet to acrobatics. She has always been interested in country music, along with all other styles of music. She owned the Grapevine Opry with Johnny High and her famous Aunt Susie. This is where she made friends with many of the country’s biggest stars when they performed for her show. BoxCar Willie was a regular on the show. The Grapevine Opry was named the fastest-growing country music show in America. All that led to a performance at the Grand Ole Opry by Chisai. She entertained by singing, dancing and performing comedy. “If it comes right down to it, I suppose I get more enjoyment out of doing comedy than anything else,” she said. “My most favorite thing in the world is to make people laugh.”

Bill Brooks started his broadcasting career at the age of 15 in radio and television across the U.S. He became

Due to weather related issues, the Texas Independence Day

Celebration has changed to March 21-22 in conjunction with the celebration of General Granbury’s Birthday.

Texas Independence Day Celebration of North Texas at Granbury is the celebration of the Texas Independence Declaration that was signed on March 2, 1836. Sponsored by the Texas Heroes Foundation, all proceeds go to benefit the Texas Heroes Foundation, a

501(c)3 scholarship fund established for the winners of the history fair as a way to teach Texas history to our children and therefore to our grandchildren and great grandchildren. The Student History fair, held February 28, awarded students from grade school to high school, scholarships and cash prizes, in four categories of video, research, art, and exhibit for a total of 12 prizes ranging from $25.00 to $500.00 dollars. The memorial service for Elizabeth Crockett will be held on March 2, at Acton Baptist Church.

The 37th annual General Granbury’s Birthday Celebration combined with the Texas Independence Day Celebration will be held on March 21-22 on the Historic Square, sponsored by the Historic Granbury Merchants Association. Being relatively new to the Granbury area, I had to do my research on Hiram Bronson Granbury in order to feel truly comfortable writing about the upcoming celebration in honor of his birth, March 1, 1831. General Granbury, born Hiram Bronson Granberry, changed the spelling to Granbury as

soon as he came of age. A Baylor University Law graduate, he worked as a lawyer and county judge in Texas before the Civil War. He organized a volunteer company for the Confederate States Army and after the outbreak of the Civil War he became its captain. He soon earned rank of brigadier general in the Confederate army and at one point served eight months as a prisoner of war. General Granbury was one of the six Confederate generals who were killed at the Battle of Franklin in Tennessee on November 30, 1864.

The Texas Independence Day historic parade will begin at 10 a.m. You can see a photo of the parade gracing the cover of the Lone Star phonebook. In the parade you will see War Pony, the Hill Country Plungerettes and the HGMA float with the Bean Queen Faye Landham on board. Queen Faye Landham was honored to have been chosen because of her countless hours as a volunteer. She will represent the HGMA on their float in the parade. Past queens have included Diane Locke, and Cindy Hyde, the 2011 Bean Queen. Cindy

told me, “It was especially an honor to have been included with the women who were honored so publicly before me.” There has been on occasion a Bean King. Scott Young and his wife Vicki Young, owner of Reds on the Square received such honor in one of the past festivals; the Bean King and Queen were honored because of their contributions to the community by the Historic Granbury Merchants Association at one of their monthly breakfast meetings.

The opening ceremony is at noon on the City Sound Stage. There will be historic re-enactments, historic exhibits including a Texas war ship that kids can play on. On Sunday, you can attend Cowboy Church and even bull riding on the beach. This festival is meant to be a true birthday bash with lots of fun activities, live music and dancing. There will be vendor booths on the square, birthday cake and ice cream as part of the opening ceremony and a Bean, Rib and Brisket Cook-off, also known as The Bean Shindig. The annual Out-House Races are just one of the contests, and there is also the bean spittin’ contest and bean eating contest. Tons of activities just for the kids, arts and crafts and food vendors will be available throughout the event.

With the icy, cold, and, quite frankly, depressing winter

weather that seems to be sticking around this year, it’s easy to forget that spring is just around the corner. But, just around the corner it is! Soon daffodils and jonquils will be popping their heads out of the warming earth and winter will be only a vague memory.

Take advantage of the many sales on winter merchandise going on right now at your favorite boutiques and stores and while you’re there check out the new spring fashions and fabulous home and garden décor! The latest spring merchandise is arriving daily and the boutiques around the area tell us that spring fashions are AMAZING this year!!

COYOTE JAZZ FESTIVAL WEATHERFORD COLLEGE

Come on out to Glen Rose April 2, 3, and 4 for the 6th Annual Paluxy River

Spring Bluegrass Festival. This popular three day event is held at historic Oakdale Park right across from the beautiful “river walk” along the Paluxy River and Big Rocks Park.

With performances by Joe Bass & The Double Mountain Boys, Salt Creek Bluegrass Band, West Bound Bluegrass, Third Generation, Tin Top Road, Kody Norris, Cedar Hill and Tripple L, the weekend promises to be a bluegrass lovers’ dream!

While you’re there check out, or

stay at, the wonderful Oakdale Park. Rich with history, Oakdale Park has been a recreational facility for the Glen Rose area since 1925. One of only a few surviving “motor courts”, once popular in the 1920’s and 30’s, still in existence, the park boasts beautifully restored cabins and a host of fun activities, such as the Bluegrass Festival, which take place throughout the year.

Admission for Thursday, April 2nd is $15 and for Friday, April 3rd and Saturday April 4th it’s $20. A three-day pass is $45.00. For festival reservations you may call 254-897-2321.

Come out and spend Wednesday evening, April 1st and you’ll get FREE beans and cornbread at 6 p.m.!

Farm-fresh Texas cuisine paired with classic cars and

trucks have proven to be a match made in heaven for locals and visitors alike who are flocking to Weatherford’s recently opened Vintage Grill and Car Museum. Jerrett Joslin, executive chef and owner of the award-winning Wild Mushroom Restaurant,

which Joslin has recently moved from Weatherford to Fort Worth, has partnered with Tom Moncrief to create a new concept in fine dining.

Located in what was the original McDavid car dealership, circa 1930, on Fort Worth Highway just east of the downtown Weatherford Square, Vintage Grill and Museum serves up Joslin’s farm-to-table Southern style cuisine along with Moncrief’s eclectic collection of vintage automobiles. The restaurant, bar and car

museum features outdoor patio dining, indoor dining, a bar, a gift shop and a free museum all housed in a unique building that is a combination of modern loft and retro chic.

The museum, which is open during restaurant hours, focuses on classic cars and trucks which will be changed out from time to time with other classics provided by sources through Moncrief

and museum curator Terry Mann. Mann, a long-time car enthusiast and President of CowtownCrusin’ For a Cure for Prostate Cancer, continually rotates the vehicles coming in allowing

regular patrons to the restaurant the opportunity to see new museum pieces in addition to their dining experience. Currently, the museum houses Lyndon B. Johnson’s 1964 Lincoln along with a 1940 LaSalle, a vintage police cruiser, and a number of other beautifully restored vehicles.

Joslin’s menu is a twist on Southern comfort food. “Highlights for me are the jalapeno hush puppies, bleu cheese biscuits and the wonderful

hamburgers,” commented a recent diner. “If you love hearty Southern dishes then this place is a must try. The chicken fried steak is huge. I recommend sharing it with a side of jalapeno mac and cheese!” said another. Most of the utensils, bowls and plates used for serving and eating at lunch time are biodegradable. “It’s all in an effort to limit the restaurant’s carbon footprint,” said Joslin. “We are trying to be as eco-friendly as possible.” The inventive chef is also making an effort to source most of the restaurant’s produce from local growers at the Weatherford Farmers Market located directly across the street from Vintage.

Live music is provided most weekends on the expansive patio area (weather permitting). A cozy bar area featuring a variety of craft beers, cocktails and an excellent selection of wines, is located between the patio and inside restaurant space. Dining is also offered in the bar and on the outside patio.

Vintage Grill and Car Museum provides a unique dining experience for residents as well as for those seeking a destination experience while visiting the Weatherford area. As one couple remarked about the eclectic pairing, “Our favorite place to dine in Weatherford. Great food, great cars… we think they have a winner here!”
