We meet Tuesdays from about 10:30 to about 2:00 in the afternoon. We’re a friendly crowd who all share a passion for quilting and other fabric arts. Often we have lunch and catch up on the news of the time. If you’re a new member at the Centre drop by and check it out.

Well winter is almost over and spring is just around the

corner. We had a Valentines dance this month and the at-

tendance was wonderful. I would like to thank everyone

for their support. We actually made money on this event.

In February, Jonie and I attended a seminar put on by

Manitoba Association of Senior Centres (MASC). We

found it very informative and learned a lot. MASC has

asked to have one of their board meetings at our Centre.

This will happen in April.

I hope everyone is well after all the flu and colds going

around. I for one am looking forward to warmer weather.

I’ll see you all around the Centre and don’t forget to volun-

teer were you can.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Peter Magnusson

Can you believe that in about a month it will be offi-cially spring and Floor Curling season will be over?

Neither can I! Time flies when we have fun!

We have been having a steady turnout every Thurs-day. We did have to cancel one week because of the cold/flu. But everyone seems to be healthy again. So one more month to go! With bonspiels coming up and the 55+ games in Beausejour in June, any teams wanting some practice time, re-member we have space for you on Thursday morn-ings.

Yikes!! What a marathon the perogy day turned out to be in February. With only 23 volunteers we made 278 dozen perogies. We all went home totally ex-

hausted. All but 9 dozen were sold on the same day. I want to REALLY thank all the volunteers who came out and especially to those of you who stayed to help

with the clean up.

I want to apologize to the bridge and Texas Hold’ Em people who came out to find us still making perogies.

Thank you for your understanding. We will do our best to be finished earlier next month.

Many of our regular volunteers were ill and could not come out. I hope everyone has recovered and will be

able to make it next perogy day.

Our next perogy day is scheduled for March 4, 2015. Please mark your calendar and please come out and

help if you can.

PEROGY MAKING

There is always lots going on in our kitchen. The Per-ogy team blitzes it for two days a month so we and our families can enjoy their great product. Elaine's crew prepares lunches or snacks for funeral recep-tions. Various volunteer teams take on some extra catering for our Centre's events or a special event like the annual Heart and Stroke Golf Tournament dinner. Then we have our very special Pancake breakfast 3 day challenge, serving over 1500 from our commu-nity, and the Fall Supper when we serve over 500 in one day.

Our Friday lunches are offered from September to April, and we serve about 40 to 50 members weekly over 30 weeks. That’s 1200 to 1500 lunches in all!! Thank goodness we have 8 teams to do that so we only work once in 2 months. There are small difficul-ties like guessing how many customers will be there. That depends on weather, dates, snow birds away, and whims of appetite! We do our best to estimate, and hate to disappoint anyone. Our thanks to those who have been disappointed and came back next week!!

As noted last month, the lunch teams will be look-ing for 3 new leaders to start the September lunch program. Please be sure to let the office or a lunch team leader know of your interest to help or lead a team. Join a team this month to try it out. You will be welcomed! You will also be amazed at how little of your time it would take to serve on a team. An hour to plan and shop, sometimes a little preparation the day before, and about 4 hours on the day. All this shared by a team of 5 or 6 done in an excellent kitchen. Great Fun!! And only once in 2 months!! 4 lunches a year!! Please Sign up at the office.

The curling is going along just fine with only two weeks of regular curling left. Our bonspiel will be on March 20th and 27th., hopefully with all the teams participating as the schedules are all made up.

We wish to remind everyone that we will not be look-ing after this activity in the Fall. We hope that some-one will step up and take over in September. The sign-up sheets are posted on the bulletin board with a lot of signatures already on it.

This is a very popular activity at the Centre, it would be shame for it not to continue next year.

A minister dies and is waiting at the pearly gates.

Ahead of him is a guy dressed in sunglasses, a loud

shirt, a leather jacket and jeans. St. Peter addresses this

guy, “Who are you, so that I may know whether or not

to admit you to the Kingdom of Heaven?”

The guy replies, “I’m Joe Choen, taxi driver, of Las

Vegas.”

St. Peter consults his list. He smiles and says to the taxi

driver, “Take this silken robe and golden staff and en-

ter the kingdom of heaven.” The taxi driver goes into

heaven with his robe and staff, and it is the minister’s

turn.

He stands erect and booms out, “I am Joseph Snow,

pastor of St. Mary’s for the last forty-five years.”

St. Peter consults his list. He says to the minister,

“Take this cotton robe and wooden staff and enter the

kingdom of heaven.”

“Just a minute,” says the minister, “That man was a

taxi driver, and he gets a silken robe and golden staff.

How can this be?”

“Up here, we work by results,” says St. Peter. “While

you preached, people slept, while he drove, people

prayed.”

This guys Father dies, and he tells the undertaker that

he wants to give his Dad the very best. So, they have

the funeral, and the undertaker sends him a bill for

$16,000.00 He pays it. A month later he gets a bill for

$85, which he pays. The next month there’s another

$85 bill, and the next month there’s another. Finally

the guy calls up the undertaker. The undertaker says,

“Well, you said you wanted the best for your Dad, so I

rented him a Tux.”

So these two Irishmen walked out of a bar.

This guy goes into a bar and orders three sepa-rate shot glasses of Irish Whiskey.

He drinks all three. He does this day after day after day, and the bartender finally says, “You know, I can put all three of these shots into one glass for you.”

The guy says, “No, I prefer it this way. See, I have two brothers—they’re over in Ireland, and I love them. This glass right here is for Finnian and this one here is for Fergus, and this one is for me. This way I can feel like we’re all here together having a drink.”

And the guy continues to come in day after day after day, and the bartender continues to set up three glasses. Then one day, the guy says, “Give me two shots today.”

“What happened? Did something happen to one of your brothers?” the bartender asks.

“No, no, no,” the guy says. “They’re okay. It’s just that I decided to quit drinking.”

Drinking with the wife!

An angry wife was complaining about her hus-band, Paddy, spending all his free time in a bar, so one night he took her along with him. "What'll you have?" he asked. "Oh, I don't know. The same as you I suppose," she replied. So, Paddy ordered a couple of Jack Daniel's and threw his down in one shot. His wife watched him, then took a sip from her glass and immediately spat it out. "Yuck, that's TERRIBLE!" she spluttered. "I don't know how you can drink this stuff!" "Well, there you go," cried Paddy. "And you think I'm out enjoying myself every night!"

Skinny Dipping

An elderly man in Florida had owned a large farm for several years.

He had a large pond in the back.

It was properly shaped for swimming, so he fixed it up nice with picnic tables, horseshoe courts, and some orange, and lime trees.

One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn't been there for a while, and look it over.

He grabbed a five- gallon bucket to bring back some fruit.

As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee.

As he came closer, he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond..

He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end..

One of the women shouted to him, 'we're not com-ing out until you leave!'

The old man frowned, 'I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond naked....'

Holding the bucket up he said, 'I'm here to feed the alligator.'

Some old men can still think fast.

“What's wrong with Murphy?” asked Father

Green. “I don't know, Father. Yesterday he

swallowed a spoon and he hasn't stirred since,”

said Mrs. Murphy.

Members interested in volunteering in the Kitchen at New Horizons.

The Friday lunch teams are a major project of the kitchen. Our Friday lunches are a great opportunity for sharing a weekly meal with game buddies and to welcome friends and guests from the community.

You know the scene: 8 Teams provide lunch once each in 2 months for an average 40 regular 55+ members and other people from the community.

Some Team members will be RETIRING after this season. We need a couple of new teams to kick off the new season in September. We need some willing to lead or share the lead with a team member. Teams are usually 5 or 6 people, spares are available. The schedule can usually be adjusted to accommodate a couple of months away.

If you are interested please tell us in the office or call Sharon Peichl at 204-642-4492.

Life is a hell of a thing to happen to a person.

Last Trip Summary;

Our trip to Shooting Star was excellent as usual, thanks to Bruce & Brenda as well as the bus driver John Mor-

row. To the 24 people that booked from Gimli we thank you. Bruce was able to get enough people from Winnipeg to fill the bus. A group from St Nor-bert were picked up and supplied muffins and water to everyone on the bus. We call him the Muffin Man.

Upon arrival all settled in for the evening. On the second day we went to Detroit Lakes for shopping and a crib tournament around the pool area when we returned. On our way home we went to Grand Forks for a bit of shopping then homeward bound.

Future Plans;

I have arranged a tour to Shooting Star on April 13-15th, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The rates should remain the same as in the past, $150.00, you will receive $100.00 on your card when we arrive as well as 2 - $5.00 food coupons. If there is a change in the rates I will post them. Shooting Star also gives 5 cents above the U.S. rate, i.e.: if the rate is .79 cents you would get .84 cents. This only applies to $150.00 dollars per day. If you are interested please leave your name at the centre or see poster and sign-up sheet on bulletin board. Any questions call 642-9495 or 642-7909.

E-Mail attachments;

Most of us receive email from unknown sources. If you receive an email from a source that you do not

recognize and it has an attachment it is best to exer-cise common sense and not click on the attachment.

One member came into the Centre and mentioned that she received an email from Fed Ex. Not unusual if you are expecting a parcel, she wasn’t. By clicking on the attachment you may be installing a malicious bit of software. A better way to deal with this type of email is to write down the number that is listed and

then go to the courier’s website and type the number into their tracking spot, if the number is legit it will tell you so. Then go back to your email program and de-

lete the malicious emails.

If there is something computer specific you would like me to address in this tip spot please let me know in the office and I will try to answer in the

Hilites.

In March, our beginner and intermediate evening class will be moving into Latin style dancing with the cha cha. The cha cha and the East Coast Swing are social type dances. They can be danced to many of today’s music. Many of the cha cha moves are also used in rumba. If you learn all three of these dances, you could be reviewing moves from one dance to another. If you participate in zumba classes, the ba-sic cha cha footwork is often part of the exercise rou-tine. Drop in and try a class on Tuesdays at 7:00PM.

Pre-beginners’ classes on Tuesdays at 1:00PM is finished for the season. If you have a group of friends that would like to learn a specific dance, call the office and leave your name.

The New Horizons Tai Chi program continues on Tuesday and Friday mornings. Tai Chi is a great form of low stress exercise and fits in well here at the Centre. Some snowbirds are missing from the regu-lar crowd but this activity is definitely worth checking out.

Time: 4:00pm – 5:00PM

We do traditional dances from around the world (Greece, Israel, France, North and South America, etc.) along with newly choreographed dances to a variety of world music. Beginners are always wel-come. The dances are always simple, and each

one will be taught first, so no experience is needed. You won't need a partner because everyone in the circle is your partner. Dancing in a circle is one of

the oldest ways in which people celebrate commu-nity and togetherness. We have done a dance or two at Winnipeg Beach celebrations to great suc-

cess. Cost is $1 to New Horizons members and $6 to non-member.

Linda Rankin has taught Circle Dance for over 25 years and sculpts the class according to participants

skills and abilities.

The Value of Time...

To realize the value of ONE YEAR, ask a student who failed a grade. To realize the value of ONE MONTH, ask a mother who has given birth to a premature baby. To realize the value of ONE WEEK, ask the editor of a weekly newspaper. To realize the value of ONE HOUR, ask the lovers who are waiting to meet. To realize the value of ONE MINUTE, ask a person who just missed a train. To realize the value of ONE SECOND, ask someone who just avoided an accident. To realize the value of ONE MILLISECOND, ask the person who won a silver medal at the Olympics.

Valentine’s Day 2015! What a great party! We had 99 attendees. We were entertained by the Mellow-“D”s. Dennis Carlson has put together a wonderful band of seven. They performed a very eclectic as-sortment of music, from toe tapping to sing along. We received lots of comments on what a great band they were. There was great dance music and great listening music for those not inclined to dance. You would have recognized Don Shannon on piano and Vivian Shannon on violin. The band performed most of the evening, stopping only for a few minutes to eat the terrific hors d-oeuvres. We dined on shrimp, Brie Bites, Cheddar and Bacon Pinwheels, meatballs and mini pizzas to mention only a few of the offerings. For dessert at 10:00 p.m. we had Val-entine Mousse Cake and Red Velvet Trifle. There was not a crumb left! The band sang Happy Birth-day to Al Kist and he enjoyed a Valentine’s Cake all to himself. Congratulations to Marilyn Campbell, the winner of the “Kinky” door prize. I apologize for the fact that there are so few pictures but I was having too much fun to remember to take any! Thanks to everyone who came out and supported us. It was a great party!

I am sending very special thanks to Doreen and George Braun, Annie Hahlweg and Roger Dickin-son, and Peter Magnusson for working so hard. As always you came through and made the event a huge success.
