The Contest and a Growing Division
As Spring springs we thirst for water, but not for Distinguished Clubs. Many Clubs in the Division
are slugging it out in the quest for Distinguished status, as are our Areas. By last count, eight clubs
have reached Distinguished or better status, with four clubs needing one more goal to be there.
The credit for this has to go to our very diligent Area Governors. They are Fern Vacca B1, Patty Sanchez B2, Paul
rossgold B3, and Cherie Aldridge B4. Fern is serving her second term as an Area Governor. Patty, Paul, and Cherie their
st.
Were also in the middle of Contest season, with Areas B2-B3 completing their Contest this past weekend. The Area B
ontest is just a few days away, and the Area B1 Contest coming up in just over a week.
These three Contests will be followed by the Division B Contest - the West Ventura County Championships - just arou
e corner on March 15th. In all, we will have had four Saturdays of Contests in a row when all is said and done.
Which brings up the subject of a very dedicated volunteer: Camarillo Evenings Ken Smith. How dedicated? Consider t
the Area B2-B3 Contest Ken was Chief Sergeant at Arms, for the B4 Contest. He is serving as Chief Judge, at the B1 Conte
nd also as Contest Chair. As for the Division B Contest, he repeats as Chief Judge. Whats also nice is that he is dedicated to
oing things right not cutting any corners. Next time you see Ken thank him. We couldnt do it without him.
Pray for rain!

Moving In the Right DirectionFirst, Happy New Year! Although the Toastmaster Year has yet to end; however, it seems to be the
appropriate time to reflect back on past performance, look forward to events of the future, and give
appreciation to those who assisted in reaching our goals.
ooking back, Division A made both significant improvements and outstanding achievements as enumerated below
1. In our first TLI in July, officer participation increased from 67 to 70%.2. Dave Sauer advanced from the Division Speech contest to become the 1stplace winner of District 33 Humor
Speech contest.
3. Division A hosted the 40thDistrict Conference this past November. Ann Hill and those assisting did a fantas
job in staging this gala event. Also, Shonna Shearson and Olaf Landsgaard were stellar in their roles as
Toastmasters for each of the speech contests.
4. Malou Guerrero-Lee, Janice Wallace, Judi Olson, and Flora Turner all earned DTM awards and Leona Byrn
was the recipient of the Community Superstar Award.
5. Because of member attendance at the Fall Conference, the Division received the Milo Graham award.
ooking forward, the following goals are of great importance.1. We must grow our membership in terms of club expansion and club growth. Currently, the Division has 24
active clubs; nine of these Clubs are at risk of becoming inactive with 9 members or less.
2. We must prepare for change. In April, active membership increases from 6 to 8 members. Later, a revitaliz
education is expected to be scheduled to unfold.
nally, I would like to express appreciation for the work being done by our Area Governors, Club Officers and
embers. Your participation remains pivotal for our Clubs, Areas, Division and District to continue moving in the rig
rection and in the pursuit of embracing excellence.

Division C GovernorMonica Aiken, DTMCourageous Communicators of Division C! Champions of Truth, Education, and FUN!!
The Area Governors are hard at work putting their contests together. Our contest season is upon us and
Division Cs kickoff for our Area Contests begins on March 1st. Contest information can be found on our
District 33 Toastmasters website (http://d33.toastmastersdistricts.org), once on our page, choose your
Division and you will see the contest flyers, you will need to scroll down a bit, and you will also be able to
print them out from the site. Please go out and support your favorite speaker or all the speakers.
ttending an Area, Division, or District contest helps you make many more connections than you would in your own club, it als
llows you the chance to grow when participating in such events whether you are a speaker or just helping out with a role for thontest. I highly encourage it!! I remember stepping outside of my club was a little scary, but hey, I have been in Leadership no
or 4 years and I STILL LOVE IT!! If I had never taken that first step I might not have realized how much more Toastmasters
as to offer!!
ducation is key! Our Division C team is dedicated to Truth, Education and FUN, we will ensure everyone is aware of the ru
nd educate clubs that may not know all the rules. We are a learning organization, so it takes time to learn all the various rules
nd regulations, but my team is patient and is willing to help educate wherever we are needed.
Our Division C team is looking forward to an exciting and FUN filled year!! See you at the contests!!
Division D GovernorGuy Dawson, ACS, ALB
The Dynamics of Distinguishing Division D
Now that are more than halfway through the Toastmaster year, Division D is bustling with
excitement and anticipation as we head into the contest season. The International and Tall Tales
contests will bring us together and be a showcase of the skills that our members have developed b
ollowing the Toastmasters educational system. Which splendid Division D speakers will represent us
t the District Conference in May? Only time will tell and we will definitely have a lot of fun on the journey.
The dynamics of Distinguishing Division D are always changing in 2013/2014. Several of our clubs are
eorganizing under different names and expanding opportunities for more people to become a part of Toastmasters
Our kick-off meetings have been very successful in sharing the virtues of Toastmasters and helping the new clubs
uild strong foundations. Ultimately, we feel that the adjustments we have made will produce positive results for the
members of our division.
How important is it to have a thorough understanding of the Distinguished Club Program? The Division D Ar
Governors are earning PHDs in the workings of the DCP and all of their hard work is paying off. Nearly half of the
lubs in Division D are within a few goals of becoming Distinguished. I cant express how proud I am of Area D1
Governor Fresia Aguedelo CC, Area D2 Governor Verda Varner ATM-G, Gene Puffer ACB and Bob Scoble ACB, A
or their commitment to empowering through education.
We still have a lot of work to do before June 30 and our sails are set on the course of high achievement. Th
ervant leaders of Division D will continue to share the knowledge and experience that has been so freely given to
hem with others. Every Toastmaster member deserves to receive the best that our organization has to offer.

Engaging Excellence In Everything We Do
Engaging Excellence throughout Division E continues to work for us, and brings less experienced
Toastmasters into new leadership roles. Their success is ensured by providing a mentor with
experience in their new role.
Division E Area Governors Julie Boyce, Joe Purdy, Patrick Hardy, Christine Campos, Cynthia Holm, and Nathan Ohren have
shown excellence in their roles, seeking out mentors as needed. In turn, they challenge area club members to assist them invarious roles that are new to themespecially in coordinating area speech contests. Likewise, help from mentors is provided
when requested. Result: more up- and- coming Toastmaster leadersone of whom (Maria Millsaps) is planning to serve as
Gov. next term!
We invite you to join us for a triple area contest! Areas 3, 4, and 6 will hold their contests all at one event on Saturday, March
at Citrix, 7414 Hollister Ave. in Goleta (near Santa Barbara) at 8:15am. Come to see how it can be done, and enjoy the best T
Tale and International speeches in these areas! Its fun!
Our list of possible new clubs has been changing; closest to chartering is a noontime club in the business sector of Carpinter
They just need a few more people to sign up. Montecito Expressionists is still working to build membership within the scope o
bank, family members, and invited guests. A couple of twinkles include the LGBT club, and one at a local church which has
large membership.
We is still key in Division F! We are working together to Embrace Excellence. Quite a bit has happened sin

Strive To Excel!
Division J Area 3 is starting a new club, Pro-Talk Toastmasters in West Lake Village in 2014. Ve
spiring! There is a potential to start another club in Division J in the coming months. Division J hmp-started the New Year with a grand success of Officers Training on Jan 4th. All 23 clubs have a minimum of fo
icers trained. We have currently achieved overall 84% officers trained with nine clubs that have all 7 office
ined, and the remaining 14 clubs have 4 to 6 officers trained. Exceptional performance by all clubs in achieving ve
gh percentage club officers trained from our scheduled trainings alone. We are positive to achieve 100% office
ined by end of February.
Where we stand on our Membership? We have 93% retention as of now, and we are optimistically hopeful
ost that number. We have seven clubs that are strong with a charter membership of 20 or higher. There are f
bs that are closer to 20 memberships. The remaining 13 clubs are cautiously eager to have a net growth ofembers. Our Division Public Relations Officers are currently strategizing to work with club public relation officers
lp the clubs in increasing their membership. There are five clubs that are astounding with distinguished sta
clusive of three clubs as Select Distinguished. Five to seven clubs can potentially become Presidents Distinguishe
ere is a very high chance for another nine clubs to become distinguished.
All our Area Governors are giving their best efforts to make their clubs successful to finish strong w
tinguished status or higher. All the clubs are conducting their club contests this month. Our area contests will
ld in the first half of the month March. Preparations for our Division Contest are underway; join us for a spectacu

Nine years ago I joined a toastmasters club tha30 members. It was an amazing first few years gthrough my speeches on my CC and AC manuals. Etime I gave my speech I was challenged to give my performance, because I had 20 members in the audiencan average in every meeting. There is something ma

I remember my first experience with Toastmastersa Speechcraft in the summer of 2011. I
stumbled, used filler words, depended on notes, and minimally engaged the audience. When I
received my first evaluation, I knew I needed Toastmasters. I was hooked and joined Y Talkers
Toastmasters in Lancaster, CA. Through manual speeches and honest feedback, I grew as a
communicator.
I then stepped into a leadership role and my focus changedmy efforts were concentrated on
serving the organization while developing the communication and leadership skills of my
fellow members.
My first club officers position was Vice President-Membership. Membership went from 18 to 28 by June 30,
013. Next, I stepped into the role of President and the club is on track to be Presidents Distinguished with 10 of 10 DCP poi
While still serving in Y Talkers this year, I accepted the position of Area A-2 Governor, which is outside my own clubs

s Division A Governor, I will focus on strengthening the communication and leadership skills of our officers and members,
