The Lutheran Church of Our Savior

March 2014

Volume 36, Number 3

Dear Fellow Servant;

In like a lion or a lamb?

March teases us

With hints of spring

And leftovers of winter

Blustery and rainy,

Surprises of snow,

Glimpses of new life

Surrounded by deadened brown

For Christians this year

March brings the season of Lent,

The gray ash and the quieting purple

That invites us to inward scrutiny

It is a long but useful journey of days,

Opening our hearts and minds

To the inescapable wonder of God’s love

Truly seen and truly given on the cross

Some wish to bypass Lent,

Just as others want to bypass March,

Getting to the joy of Easter and Spring

Without the dismal waiting

However, there is purpose and value

In these days of in-between,

Preparing us to fully appreciate

The miracles of new life that await

Whether the weather outside

Is like lion or lamb,

Inside the church

It is always about the lamb

Who came among and for us.

So quietly we mouth an alleluia

for the Christ who calls us His own,

Whom we serve and adore. +dcs

Thanks to the vagary of the calendar, Easter is about as late as it can be (April

20th) which means that Lent begins late, too. You are encouraged to join members

of this faith family for fellowship and fun on Shrove Monday (March 3rd). Pancakes

and sausage, beads and masks will continue the ancient tradition of Mardi Gras;

one last party before the solemnity of Lent. Lent itself begins with Ash Wednesday

(March 5th). A soup & salad meal begins at 5:30, and worship begins at 7:00pm. Our

Ash Wednesday worship this year includes a chancel drama, imposition of ashes (for

those who desire it), distribution of Lenten devotional booklets and lapel pins. The

LCOS tradition challenges you to wear the pins during Lent, and if someone asks

about them, explain what it means to you and give it to them. We usually give away

over 500 pins to people in the community which is a witness to the faith we profess.

Come join us!

During March we also mark the end of our ESL semester and will resume this

ministry with the Fall semester next September. What a remarkable story our ESL pro-

gram is, beginning modestly over 10 years ago and now a large ministry of outreach!

We thank especially LaNell Schultheis, Sam Flores and Patti Brown for their tireless

work in facilitating this part of our ministry. We also thank many other servants

(childcare workers, kitchen help, mentors who teach and encourage, those who

help set up and clean up each week) . Once again we had over 200 students regis-

tered, plus we cared for anywhere from 10-30 of their children. Praise God for this

witness to Christ’s love!

There are many opportunities here for you to serve. In the words of an old col-

lect, please “read, mark, learn and inwardly digest” the information in the bulletin

and on the website. Prayerfully ask where it is that God may use you and the gifts

God has blessed you with. LCOS is blessed with a large and vibrant ministry, but to

meet the challenges it presents, all members are needed to serve. We still have va-

cancies on council which need to be filled. See any of the Elders if you have ques-

tions about what is involved.

The year of change and challenge continues on. Please stay informed and in-

volved since this is your ministry. It is yet my privilege to serve you and I will do so until

the end of August. Please pray for this ministry and the new chapter that God has in

store for you. It promises to be an exciting time. I love you.

Peace+ Pr. Schaefer

Worthy of Note...

ONLINE BIBLE STUDY FOR LENT As during Advent, we will offer a daily online Bible study during the days of Lent, beginning March 5. An email will arrive each morning with a Scripture reading, a brief meditation, and a question or two for reflection. You can choose to respond to the question and post that to the group or to just do the study on your own. We will be using the book, "Journeying Through Lent with Luke" by Nancy Koester as the basis for our study. Themes include prayer, heal-ing, forgiveness, and teaching. If you'd like to sign up, please contact Sister Deb at [email protected] and provide your email address. This is a different way to engage with Scrip-ture and others and keep focused on the cross during this season of contemplation.

Shrove Monday, also known as Rosenmontag, Lundi Gras, Clean Monday, Collop Mon-

day, Ash Monday, Nickanan Night, Peasen Monday, Lundi Gras and Hall Monday, among

other names, is the Monday before Ash Wednesday. The word Shrove comes from the

word shrive, meaning "confess”. It is tradi*onal in many parts of the Chris*an World to

celebrate before Lent begins, with feas*ng and music and parades. These celebra*ons

offer a perfect opportunity to use up the last of our rich, fa,y foods before the ritual

fas*ng of the Lenten season. It is more common nowadays in our tradi*on to celebrate

Shrove Tuesday, but we moved our celebra*on to Monday in deference to our ESL pro-

gram.

In some parts of the world, Shrove Monday is s*ll part of Carnival, and there are pa-

rades with outrageous costumes, lots of fa,y food and plenty of alcohol. In other parts

of the world, Shrove Monday used to be a li,le more like Halloween: children would

dress up in costumes and go door to door asking for pancakes or other treats.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER. We are now two months into a year that is bringing a great deal of change for LCOS. And while change can be unsettling, and even mixed with fear, I am reminded of what Jesus told his disciples over 2000 years ago: “KI am with you always, to the close of the age.” (Mt. 28:20) These are good words for us to remember as we move forward in faith and look to the future of LCOS and the ministries we carry out in His name. Your Council and Elders are moving forward together in preparing for the call of a new pastor. In April we will initiate an effort to define a Future Ministry Vision for LCOS. All members of the congre-gation will be invited to participate in this activity as we take the “Stortz Ministry Model” and ask the question, “What’s next?” I know that many of you have wonderful ideas as to what new and im-proved ministries we should look at, and I strongly believe the Holy Spirit will lead us into a “future” LCOS. Look for more information on this visioning effort in the coming weeks. Your leadership team is also developing the criteria and manner in which the Call Committee will be formed. While the Call Committee will not begin its actions until September, it is important that we begin now to prayerfully prepare for the selection of the committee and not find ourselves rushing to do it over the summer. With all the above in mind, I ask for your prayers for those who you have elected to lead LCOS in 2014. We hold your trust gently in our hands and know that your prayers and God’s Holy Spirit will sustain and lead us. I invite you to attend any of our Council meetings so you can see firsthand what we do and how we serve you. Our monthly meeting day and time are found in the calendar in-cluded with every issue of the Voice. Please feel free to contact me at church or at home (302-947-4547) if you have any question or con-cern. I remain your brother in Christ, Jim McDonald\

NEWS FROM OUR MISSIONARY FAMILY IN TANZANIA: Funke News: Treading On the Heights Kilimanjaro, dormitory, discipline, Sister Act, guests, stitches and malaria— what do all of these have in common? They all made for a very dynamic January for us. We are thankful that the blessings of this past month far outweighed the chal-lenges. Here’s a peak (pun-intended) at our life this January: Preparations We had a very low-key New Year’s with Omary and our friend Abel, but life soon picked up pace. We completed some home repair projects in preparation for hosting guests later in the month including refinishing the floor and putting a water heater in the bathroom. We began planning for the beginning of the school year. We also gathered pledges for the new boys’ dormi-tory and completed training for climbing Kilimanjaro. Kilimanjaro For A Cause On January 10th we flew to Moshi and the next day we began our climb up Kilimanjaro. For the full story and pictures, go to www.facebook.com/AFunkeTimeInTanzania and find the photo album labeled “Our Kilimanjaro Adventure.” You don’t need a Facebook account to view this album. We are happy to report that after five days of climbing, we reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,341 ft). We were surprised to discover that the two days down were just as challenging. We’ve writ-ten two blog posts about our experiences. The more serious is called “6 Lessons From Kilimanjaro,” and the more humorous is “You Know It’s Cold WhenK” You can find them both at www.afunketimeintanzania.blogspot.com . Before we left for Kilimanjaro, we were able to lead a teacher in-service on positive and negative forms of discipline, helping the teachers explore options other than corporal punishment. By the time we re-turned, the school year was in full swing. Eric went straight back to the classroom and has been able to install new educational software on the computers. Last Friday, Linda taught the students about various studying and test-taking strategies. We have also started movie nights back up, which the students al-ways love. They laughed and laughed at Sister Act. Guests On January 26th, we welcomed Kathy and Steve from Redeemer Lutheran Church, Peoria, IL. The church graciously gave the school the money to put a roof on its new multipurpose hall. Linda is especially excited about this new hall, because right now the only place large enough for her school-wide class is outdoors. Kathy and Steve, who are staying with us for a month, have been finding all kinds of projects to help with at the school and will be liaisons between the school and their church. We have especially enjoyed the opportunity to visit with other Americans. They have been great company. Community Work Early in the month, Linda helped the East of Lake Victoria Diocese edit the English version of their new strategic plan. We have had several meetings to discuss future plans with leaders from the South-East of Lake Victoria Diocese. We are also happy to report that four more groups have been trained in the villages using CARE’s entrepreneurship curriculum. So far six groups, totaling 146 people, have received education about starting their own small businesses. Some Challenges Last week Omary was trying to fix our gate and cut his hand on a piece of metal. Four stitches and some antibiotics later, he is healing well. We were very thankful that another youth in our neighborhood stepped in to help with some of the chores involving water. Then four days ago, Eric was diagnosed with malaria. We suspect he may have been bitten when we came down off of Kiliman-jaro. Who thinks about bug spray when you’ve just seen glaciers? We knew it was bound to happen eventually. We are thankful that so far his body seems to be handling its first episode fairly well. He has been able to retain enough water, and his fever broke yesterday. We hope and pray that this means he is on the mend. We appreciate all of your prayers, and we thank God that even in the trials, we can re-member His goodness and blessings. Prayer Requests Thanksgiving for a successful climb up Kilimanjaro, for all the people who have helped us make this trip and fundraiser a success, for the joy of hosting new friends from the U.S. and sharing our lives here with them, for more communities trained in entrepreneurship and for bodies that heal. For a quick recovery for Eric as he battles his first case of malaria. Also, that the mosquito that found him didn't also find Linda. (Update: It did.) For a full recovery of Omary’s hand. For the school as they strive to provide the best possible education for the students You can follow the Funkes on Facebook: “A Funke Time in Tanzania”
