Call it a sophisticated business simulation. Call it an exercise in experiential learning. Or call it a board game. Whatever you label it, the simple fact is that Zodiak is fun. And that’s the key to its unique power.

Zodiak: The Game of Business Finance and Strategy is a one-day instructor-led classroom simulation that builds business acumen. Flat sales, cost overruns, disgruntled customers, dried-up cash flow, unhappy stockholders, lost investment opportunities -- these are common challenges in today's business world. Zodiak is a highly-interactive board game that allows participants to become familiar and experience these concepts while running a mock company.

As new owners of the struggling Zodiak company, learners sign for a bank loan, attract investors, purchase equipment and materials, and deliver products and services.

As they do, terms such as cash flow, return on equity, working capital, cost of goods sold and assets come to life.

In just a few hours, as participants handle chance events, move game pieces, answer to investors and make tough business decisions, something remarkable happens. They embrace new insights -- not just about how the numbers work but also about the consequences of business decisions and actions on financial success. That’s true business acumen.

Who should attend? Anyone who wishes to gain a greater understanding of business finance, the impact of financial realities, and the role you play in Compass Group's financial success should participate in Zodiak.

At Compass, we all work hard, and making sure that all of our Associates are paid properly and fairly is of the utmost importance and integral to achieving our vision of great people, providing great service, delivering great results. The rules about wages and hours of work can be complex, and sometimes doing what seems practical and common-sense can violate Compass policies, which are designed to promote our important workplace values and to ensure state and federal laws are followed. To help simplify the complexities, we provide Wage & Hour e-Learning designed to help our managers and key Associates spot issues, and understand and follow our wage and hour related policies and the applicable laws.

On January 2, 2014, we began our formal recertification process. Every Compass Associate who has management and/or supervisory influence in the United States is required to complete the Wage & Hour 2014 program. We have adopted the Training Year Method for recertification, which means everyone must get recertified during the same calendar year with the current year being 2014, regardless of their previous certification date. Then, it will be required every two (2) years (even-numbered years). In addition, all newly hired or promoted Associates in required job positions are expected to complete the training within 30 days of hire or promotion.

Associates can access the program online anytime through MyLMS, Compass Group’s new learning management system, at https://www.compassmylms.com. If Associates are required to complete the program, they will find it listed under the “My Learning” block on the home page. The training is approximately 1 hour long and will be specific to the state in which the Associate’s operations are focused. There is a $25 per person charge for the program. For questions about Wage and Hour 2014, contact Kristin Nelson at [email protected].
