What a wonderful time to be a Legacy Lion! As I was speaking at the State of the School,

it was such a blessing to be able to rattle off all of the successes we’ve seen this year. I love to name them one by one, as the song says, because it reminds me just how faithful God has been. If you have been keeping up with me through my articles in the paper, you know I’ve spoken a lot about “it” and about how special our community is. As spring approaches, this time of year becomes a bit chaotic as we try to continue to serve you, our current families, and begin loving on a new group of families as well. This year, the task will be even harder because of sheer volume and, because we must be careful to protect what we love so much. The question quickly becomes, “How?”

I am blessed to be loved by two wonderful communities; Legacy, and my church body. At church, we have been walking through the book of Acts, which talks about both healthy, and unhealthy churches. I think many of the same principals apply. For instance, when I consider what has attracted many of you to Legacy, the answer I hear most often is “love.” I believe a healthy Christian community, like ours, attracts people to Christ. We do that by showing one another the love of Christ. Just like the good churches in Jerusalem, we have a healthy zeal to please God, and to love one anoth-er and this is contagious. A healthy, loving church will grow in numbers, and I believe the same to be true about a healthy, loving community. This isn’t something that just happens, it has to be nurtured and protected from things that would harm it and cause it to become sick and unhealthy. These are the things we must not only pray against, but be mindful of in our daily walk.

My staff and I met recently to talk about what to expect over the next few months. On the top of our list was increased spiritual warfare. We know all too well that when great things are happening, the Enemy will work even harder to destroy what we have, from the inside out. My leadership team determined that we will call it when we see it. We will acknowledge the “elephant in the room.” If we are feeling fearful, envious, agitated, or just overly sensitive, we will confess that to one another and pray through it before moving on. Ephesians tells us that WHEN the enemy comes against us, we will be able to stand IF we’ve put on our spiritual armor; the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the gospel of peace, the shield of

faith, which extinguishes the flaming arrows of the evil one, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit. And then, we are to pray “in the Spirit on all occasions.”

We are all charged with protecting this commu-nity and battling the “powers of darkness” through our prayer and diligence to please the Lord. Acts 2: 42 says that the believers, “devoted themselves” to the word of God, AND “to fellowship, the breaking

of bread and to prayer.” Through fellowship, we learn to love one another, trust one another, and care for one another. We also know that where two or three are gathered (in fellowship), God will be there. In order to protect our community and the “It” we love so much, we must first be wise enough to realize that Satan would love nothing more than to tear it apart. Because we know he hates what we are doing, we must work tirelessly to “keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace..one body and one Spirit.” Ephesians 4:3-4.

Legacy is worth protecting. It is worth defending. As we continue to grow our community, we must be sure we do not stray from our mission, nor become sidetracked with things that, in the end do not further God’s kingdom. Our deepest desire for our children and for our community should be that we be “rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge,” so that we can “be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God,” Ephesians 3:18-20.

Please continue to pray with me that God would shield us from the attempts of the enemy to destroy what He has built. Pray that our community will be focused and united against any effort to tear us apart. Pray specifically for our leadership, my staff, our teachers, students, architects, construc-tion workers, bankers, our new neighbors, and for anyone involved in the tedious process and transitions that lie ahead. Pray for wisdom and discernment, for strength and endurance. And, claim with me the promise that if God is for us, who can come against us?

These are exciting times to be a Legacy Lion. Join me, with your armor, in protecting our sweet community by committing to pray without ceasing for God’s will to be done. PFT

(continued from p.1)Legacy’s wonderful Fine Arts programs

perform throughout the year at multiple events and always put on a fantastic show!

“This year’s Mane Event had the most participation ever from our students,” says Mrs. Cone. “Each group performed and Mrs. Ivy chose work from her fall semester classes to display around the atrium of the church.”

Mane Event was definitely a success for Legacy Prep. The groups did a great job performing and the artwork displayed was truly a work of art.

Our school is also blessed to have three praise bands that lead worship for Rebelution each month. Additional performances have included the middle school choir singing the national anthem at games, the upcoming ACSI Music Fest on March 8th at Southwest Community Christian Academy, and an ACSI Art Festival at Faith Academy to be held later this spring.

Looking to the future, Mrs. Cone hopes to offer electives such as high school choir, an orchestra or band program, and art and music appreciation classes. She also sees much potential in offering drama, dance, film and photography classes and clubs after school.

“It is ultimately up to student interests and qualified teachers to develop and lead,” she says.

In conclusion, Mrs. Cone said, “I envision fine arts at Legacy to be well-rounded and balanced, but most importantly glorifying to God” PFT

Mrs. Ivy’s art electives are very popular with Lions of all ages.

Third Graders enjoyBlessings with Mrs. spinaleBy Keller Houston

The third graders are re-ally enjoying their new

teacher, Leanne Spinale. She teaches English and History.

Legacy is the first school that Mrs. Spinale has taught at. She has trained in Klein ISD and Tomball ISD. She didn’t enjoy it near as much as she enjoys teaching at Legacy.

“I prayed that I could teach at a Christian school,” she says, “and God let me.”

Mrs. Spinale has an eleven-year-old daughter that will come to Legacy in a few years. PFT

Lions Invade Space CenterBy Bobby Cruthirds

Mrs. Tharp’s fourth-grade class took a field trip to Space Center Houston last month.

The fourth graders have been doing a unit in science that covers the sun, moon, and stars. They also learned about the Apollo project and the planets of our solar system.

At NASA, they learned about how astronauts live in space and got a tour of mission control. B.J. Fornero and Richard Bundy got to go up on a stage for the Life in Space demo. “The fourth

graders also received the privilege of getting to see a real space shuttle that just got in from Florida,” said Mrs. Tharp.

The lesson that the fourth graders were doing had a biblical connection to Genesis 1:1-19. The fourth graders really got a chance to see how great our God is by all he has created, and how perfect in design everything is.

The fourth graders will continue to learn about how God is perfect, how his creation is perfect, and how we need to carry our dominion mandate given to us in Genesis chapter 1. PFT

Review by Jay Mondick

Christian rapper, Canon, recently released his first solo album, Loose

Canon Vol. 1. The album has six songs and only cost $4.99. It includes his hit song, and my favorite, “Loud Music.”

Each of his songs have something to do with God. The first song on his album, “Tell It All,” mainly talks about being free and spreading God’s word.

The next song on his album is “Yeen Bout Dat Life.” This song mostly talks about how people are blinded by the world.

Another song on his album is “Say Yeah,” which talks about determination, confession, and temptation. My favor-ite, “Loud Music,” which talks about Canon’s music compared to other music.

Canon’s music is different than most other rappers. His songs aren’t explicit and he stays on the topic of God. He is different than other Christian rappers, because he has the same style of regular rap, but with a Godly message. Also, he is one of the fastest rappers I have heard.

Be sure to look out for his group, R.M.G, and their new album. PFT

How would you like to be recognized as one of our finest leaders at Legacy? The National

Honor Society (NHS) is an organization that rec-ognizes students who succeed in grades, leader-ship, and service.

Katherine Beeman, Sarah Cruthirds, Gabe Locke, Kyle Maiz, Adele Mouna, Becca Schardt, and Alex Wilson are all great leaders to follow. All of these wonderful students applied to become members of NHS. A committee reviewed their ap-plications before inviting them to join the school’s organization. Legacy has been a part of NHS for two years now. Mrs. Bryant is the sponsor for the Legacy NHS group.

In the fall of this year they were active in col-lecting items for a pregnancy assistance group to give them for Christmas.

The group is getting ready to do another service project this upcoming spring, but they are still undecided on what to do. PFT

Swimming & Diving

By Adisyn Mickan

On your mark. Get set. Beep. And the swimmers are off! Legacy ninth

graders Amber Condley and Chandlyr Mickan are proud to be a part of LPCA’s first swim team.

The girls had very little practice time, as both were finishing up their season on the Lady Lions basketball team. Surpris-ingly, Amber and Chandlyr have 12 years of swim team experience between the two of them, so the minimal amount of prac-tice time did not discourage them in their goal to swim for Legacy.

After only three practices at the Magnolia Aquatic Center (MAC), the

two girls drove to Pearland for a recent regional swim meet. Don’t worry, though; the meet was held in an inside swimming pool, there were no hypothermia cases reported.

After getting up too early in the morn-ing to be legal, Amber and Chandlyr swam relatively well in their strokes; Am-ber in the 100 breaststroke, and Chandlyr in the 100 breaststroke and 50 freestyle. The girls sported black speedo endurance swimsuits with our Legacy Lion in metal-lic silver on the front. Legacy was repre-sented well as the girls kept warm in their Legacy swim jackets that proudly dis-played our lion and the team’s inspiration from Psalm 93:4, which says, “Mightier

than the thunder of the great waters.”After the swim meet, Amber and

Chandlyr where joined by Gabby Hogan to make the first Legacy dive team. Diving is a new sport to all three girls. They prac-ticed a total of five times and with extreme dedication where able to learn enough dives to compete at the state competition in San Antonio.

We should all be very proud of these young ladies because it takes a lot of courage to try a new sport. These girls achieved in five days what most divers only achieve with months to years of practice. The girls look forward to having more practice time and returning next year ready to compete again. Lions Track & Field

By Brennan Cone

Legacy’s athletic director, Leah Ford, has introduced individual sports to Legacy this year. These new programs give students the

chance to participate in sports they love. Legacy is now offering tennis, diving, swimming, golf, and track

for high school students. Track is also offered for middle school and elementary students, who already competed in one track meet.

There are 16 events in the track meets, including high jump, 1600m race, 4x400m relay, and 100m dash. Students are evaluated for what their best event is and train for it. Track members can do up to five events in a meet. Each meet may last for a couple of hours. The varsity’s first meet is on March 23 at Houston Christian, while the first JV meet is on March 26 at Northland Christian (where the elementary students competed).

Swim and dive had their first meet in Pearland (see story on p.8). Then they had the state meet on the 15th of February. Tennis and golf schedules have not been made yet. If you are interested in any of these sports email Mrs. Ford at [email protected]. PFT

Grayson and Brody Murphy, students at Legacy, love to race BMX. Grayson is in 5th grade and has been

racing BMX for two years. Brody, Grayson’s brother, is in Pre-K and has been racing BMX for one year. Brody got off of his training wheels a week after he turned four and began racing soon after.

They both practice three days a week at Kyle Bennett Armadillo BMX, right off of I-45 highway. Grayson also likes to workout at Gold’s Gym two days a week doing polymetric and strength exercises with a group of his BMX riders.

The boys also travel with their family seven times a year to Nationals. One of the biggest races of the year takes place in November and is the USA BMX Grand Nationals.

Mrs. Murphy said, “We love traveling to the races, and it’s a great sport that promotes family, fitness, and it is a lot of fun.” PFT

Coming up soon is the March Madness NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. It will feature the best 68 teams in Division 1 college basketball. It is a single elimination tournament.

This year I think a lot of small school teams will make it far. The top teams to look out for are Miami, Duke, Gonzaga, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin.

I think that the teams that will make it to the final four will be Wisconsin, the University of Miami (Florida), Minnesota, and Notre Dame.

I think that Wisconsin and Miami will play in the championship game. It will be a close game. I think Miami will win it all and will be the 2012-2013 Division 1 champions. PFT

Life of Pi Shows God’s GreatnessReview by Alex Gibson

Based on the best-selling novel by Yann Martel, Life of Pi is a magical adventure story centering on Pi Patel, the precocious son of a zoo keeper. The movie was directed by Ang Lee, a Taiwanese-born American film director.

Pi Patel was played by four different actors, Gautam Belur at five, Ayush Tandon at 11, Suraj Sharma at sea, and Irrfan Khan as the adult after he got rescued.

This movie is about a young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected con-nection with another survivor: a fearsome Bengal tiger.

This movie was very interesting, I loved every bit of it. I would tell everyone to go see this movie because even though it’s PG I still loved it. This movie is great for fami-lies that are okay with the main character as a kid trying other religions. This movie also points out God’s greatness while Pi Patel is at sea.

If you ever want to see a PG movie that you think your kids or teenagers would love, this is the movie to see.

Keep in mind that there are scenes where the tiger attacks the other animals while on the boat, it isn’t ripping off a leg to eat, it’s just putting the tiger either dragging his prey to where he sleeps or just putting his head in the chest and making it look like the tiger is eating the meat.

Overall you would still love this movie with your kids. PFT

everyone had a great time at legacy Prep’s annual student-staff basketball game. of course, the students schooled the staff, as usual. However, it is still unclear who’s idea it was to leave the trusted position of referee in the hands of the infamous Ryan May! PFT

In his song, “Tell the World,” Lecrae says that he wants to “tell the truth, let the whole world know that I’ve seen your love and it’s everlasting.” Before he met

Christ, Lecrae says he was a slave to himself, used drugs, cursed God, and was deep in sin.

After he encountered Christ, Jesus set him free, gave him a new life, and changed his thoughts. Lecrae explains that he did nothing to deserve this - it was a free gift. Now, he wants to tell the world about Jesus.

Lecrae’s testimony is a powerful story of grace. In the Bible, we find that Paul had similar motivation for telling the world about Jesus. It says in 1 Timothy 1:13-16:

“I used to speak evil things against Jesus. I tried to hurt his followers. I really pushed them around. But God showed me mercy anyway. I did those things without knowing any better. I wasn’t a believer. Our Lord poured out more and more of his grace on me. Along

with it came faith and love from Christ Jesus. Here is a saying that you can trust. It should be accepted completely: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. And I am the worst sinner of all. But for that very reason, God showed me mercy. And I am the worst of sinners. He showed me mercy so that Christ Jesus could show that he is very patient. I was an example for those who would come to believe in him. Then they would receive eternal life.”

When you accepted Christ, you received the same gift of grace. You may have been spared the agony of going through some of

the sins listed by Lecrae, but each of us still struggles with sin. Your story will be just the right testimony for someone Jesus places in your path. Jesus delights in your story and in using you as an instrument to tell the world about Him!

So, what is your story? Have you asked Christ to be your Savior and give you eternal life? How does Christ help you each day? What are some situations He has rescued you from?

As you celebrate Easter, take some time to consider what Christ has done for you and who you can tell. Your story is powerful and was given to you to share!

Makin’ It HappenAction: Listen to “Tell the World,” by

Lecrae. Think about how Lecrae’s music can reach a specific group of listeners. Just like different types of music speak to different people, you have a unique testimony that can reach the individuals Jesus brings your way.

Straight to the Source: Read 1 John 5:10-12. What is the message that we get to share?

Memorize: But make sure in your hearts that Christ is Lord. Always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks you about the hope you have. Be ready to give the reason for it. But do it gently and with respect. (1 Peter 3:15)

Pray: Lecrae says that his walk with Christ started when he attended church and “the people there loved me genuinely.” Ask Jesus to help you do the same for those around you.

Parent Connection: You can help your family members be ready to share their testimonies by answering these questions together - What was your life like before Christ? How did you encounter Christ? Since you came to know Christ, how is your life different? PFT

Legacy’s Bender family is spending 80 days in South Africa. Makaila (8th), Ethan (4th), Brooke ( and their

mom, Nicole, went to South Africa on a mission trip. They left on February 16 and are expected back on May 7. The Benders flew to New York for one night before they began their 14-hour journey to South Africa.

While they are there, they will be working with the Impact Africa ministry on their Impact Kids Program. This program attempts to help unfortunate and hope-less children. Impact Africa has two centers for kids stationed in squatter camps. Squatter camps are known as informal settlements. The Benders will be helping at schools in the community as well. Makaila Bender, the oldest Bender child, said, “I am not scared about this trip, just nervous for the unexpected.”

Mr. and Mrs. Bender have been friends with the founders of Impact Africa for more than 14 years. They’ve also led temporary trips to South Africa to work with this ministry.

Makaila has been to South Africa once before, as well as Uganda and Kenya, to do mission work. “I love the fact that God opened the door for us to come. When you see a great need and you have the ability to help meet it, it doesn’t seem like self-sacrifice, but rather an opportunity to use your life to serve God and those he loves,” she says.

Makaila created an Instagram page called “80day-sinafrica” where she is posting pictures of the trip to South Africa. For more information, visit them online at www.impactafrica.org. PFT

Middle and Upper School Need More Field TripsBy Parker Primm

Legacy’s middle and upper school students need field trips for many rea-

sons. The teachers might also benefit from them, as well.

My first point is, of course, the most obvious. Middle school children really en-joy being able to learn by interacting with the information outside of school. Not all kids can learn only by reading the content out of a textbook. Some children need to see and do what they are learning, to be able to best understand it.

By going on a field trip, students may be able to connect with what they are learning and they will have a new under-standing of it.

Going on field trips will help them remember what they learn better than tak-ing a test for it, which they only remember for a short while.

Ask your children if they can remem-ber a test from four years ago. Most likely they will not be able to recall it.

Now ask them if they can remember a field trip from four years ago and what they learned while there. Most likely they

will remember the field trip better than the test.

Another reason is that the students get to practice their appropriate behavior that they practice in class.

My last point is that the teachers will be able to bond with the children and know them better. By going on the field trips the teacher will find new methods to teach the materials and how to explain it to each child.

I think that Legacy students need field trips to have a higher understanding of what they are learning in their classes. PFT

Mrs. Carlson’s 5th-grade students have been studying ecosystems. They wrote a short report about biomes, describing the climate, the organisms that live in the biome, and other interesting facts. They also had to create a diarama of their biome and present it to the class. “I am re-ally proud of the class and how they completed the project,” said Mrs. Carlson. “They all did a great job.” The outside picture is from a lab they did. The students were given a hula hoop, a spoon and a magnifying glass. They were instructed to put their hoop down and observe the “habitat” by digging with their spoons and by observing with their magnify-ing glass without disturbing the area too much. “They saw bugs, spiders, and grasshoppers,” said Mrs. Carlson. “I was just glad we didn’t see any snakes!” PFT

One of the many new families this year at Legacy Prep are the Hermans. Ninth-grader Miranda

came to Legacy from York Junior High at the beginning of this year. Her brother, Colby (11th), came from Oak Ridge High School in January.

The Hermans learned about Legacy from their neighbors, the Petersons, who invited them to come to Legacy’s open house. The Hermans say that when they first visited the school they knew that it was the right choice for their family.

Legacy Prep is one of the few University Model Schools (UMS) in the area. New families coming into Legacy sometimes it hard to adjust to the home days that a UMS offers for its families.

“It has not been a huge adjustment, other than get-ting a schedule on Tuesday and Thursdays. We all love our time together and the kids are working together on more stuff than they ever have before,” said Mrs. Herman.

Miranda says she enjoys cheering and that she never would have gotten the opportunity to cheer at public school. She also likes that there is not a competition to be “popular.” The kids just accept you for who you are.

Colby says he enjoys the small class sizes and play-ing basketball for the first time. He also says that he is exciting to be graduating next year. PFT

A BUSY SPRINGI hope you are energized for the final semester

of this school year. This will be a very busy spring semester, not only academically, but also as construction begins on the new building!

Board MeetingsThe board has met several times over

the past 45 days, focusing on the design and financing of the building, with input from the Faculty and Administration. Legacy has secured $5 million in financing from First Bank of Conroe (FBOC). The construction loan will close by the end of March. The board and advancement team reached out to seven banks and decided on FBOC; they provided the best terms with the

maximum amount of financing. The final design will include classrooms in the

new facility, with additional classrooms in portable buildings. The portable buildings will be temporary until we raise additional funds through the capital campaign to have all the students within the building.

The goal is to have the building completed for this fall. We have worked very hard with the administration, faculty, and the contractor to provide the students with the best environment possible. Capital Campaign

Heather Elsik continues to focus on the capital campaign and raising new funds outside of the Legacy family. Heather and her team are focused on endowments and foundations in the general

area of the school. Legacy will need the continued support from

our families financially and through prayer. Please pray Heather and her team will be successful in raising significant funds outside of the Legacy family. For more information about the capital campaign please contact Heather ([email protected]) or any of the board members.

As you all know, Spring Break begins March 11th. Use this time to recharge for the final stretch of this school year and to spend quality time with your family. God has blessed this school in so many ways through the teachers, the staff, the students and the families we have at Legacy. The board, administration and teachers will need your prayers and support as the school enters a new phase in its evolution. On behalf of the entire Legacy Prep board, may God bless you all. PFT

BoardInquiry

Each month one of Legacy’s Board of Directors will update you with what’s happening in the boardroom. If you have a question for the board, email [email protected].

Pray that God helps these plans become reality!

One of the families Legacy Prep has welcomed this year is the Primms. They have a son in 8th grade, Parker.

Parker plays basketball and football at Legacy. “My favorite thing about Legacy is how God is related to everything that they teach and how easy it was to fit in,” said Parker. “At Legacy they have a better education than at our previous school.”

“We first became acquainted with Legacy when our former school, a Christian school, played them in basketball last spring,” said Mrs. Primm. “Even though we lost, we were impressed by the good sportsmanship and the friendliness exhibited by both players and fans. We are so grateful that this friendliness carried over to the warm welcome Parker received from the football team prior to school and day-to-day in the classroom once school commenced.”

The warm welcome they received helped make the transition to a new school seam-less.

“After much prayer and research, we switched to Legacy for the accredited and rigorous academic college preparatory curriculum and dedication to training students to always give themselves fully to the work of the Lord.\,” Said Mrs. Primm. “Personally my favorite thing at Legacy is the leadership and dedication of the board, faculty, staff, and coaches. Additionally, the positive examples of Christian character and time com-mitment of coaches and their families is another facet which distinguishes Legacy from other schools. Legacy also offers distinguished diploma plans throughout 12th grade and are growing organized sports programs.”

The Primms love Legacy Prep and are very happy to have found an awesome school to call their own. We are just as happy to have them here. PFT
