WELL DONE CRICKET COMMITTEE

History of women's cricket Courtesy: Abbas Lavingia

The history of women's cricket can be traced back to a report in The Reading Mercury on 26 July 1745 and a match that took place between the villages of Bramley and Hambledon in Surrey.

The Mercury reported:"The greatest cricket match that was played in this part of England was on Friday, the 26th of last month, on Gosden Common, near Guildford, between eleven maids of Bramley and eleven maids of Hambledon, all dressed in white. The Bramley maids had blue ribbons and the Hambledon maids red ribbons on their heads. The Bramley girls got 119 notches and the Hambledon girls 127. There was of bothe sexes the greatest number that ever was seen on such an occasion. The girls bowled, batted, ran and catches as well as most men could do in that game."

Library - a sanctuary; a horizon. by Maryam Murtaza Sadriwala It is a sanctuary for an ardent lover of the written word. When you enter its premises, the sounds of the outside world melt away and you are left with a comforting silence and the only company is shelf after shelf of books.  This is a silence which is not gloomy. It is a silence which awes. It is a silence which exudes reverence forthe written word and hails all those who appreciate the worth of the knowledge. I have always loved stepping into the threshold of a library. My first memories of a library are that of my school. It was a pristine, white sprawling room divided by rows of bright, red shelves and round tables and chairs. The librarian was a dragon and we feared her arched eyebrows and hisses of “shs”. Despite this fear, I relished the library lesson as my friends and I perused shelf after the other, giggling and snatching that forbidden whisper.  My next memories are of the Karachi Club library. Some 20 years ago, the library was at the far corner of the club - dark and dingy, and usually abandoned. But I always managed to drag my mom into it as I was fascinated by the stacks and stacks of Archie comics it possessed. continued on next page . . .

Inauguration of New Badminton Court

The new team of club management under the umbrella of its President Ashfaq Tola and Jawed Karim is undergoing the process of renovating the club but special emphasis is given to those regions of the club where the young generation is involved, an area wherethey are more comfortable and relaxed.

Mr. Ismail Shariff convener sports committee is successful in completing his plan of refurbishing the areas, the process of which started last year and a new look has been given to the Squash and  Badminton courts where our amateurs are taking full privilege of the facilities and refining their game.

VISIT THESE DISTRICTS  AND BE A SPORTSMEN

. . . continued from previous page . . .

Over the years the club library became a wide spaced, artfully designed area with a remarkable array of books on every topic. When I was in school I used to spend hours picking out an Enid Blyton or Sweet Dream romance after my swimming sessions at the club. In University, the formidable literature section of the club library was a haven for the matter I needed for my literary sessions at Karachi University. I would furiously note downcouplets of Faiz and translations of Ghalib hoping to be well equipped for our weekly meetings.

The University library was an institute within the institute. Floor after floor of books; floor to ceiling windows letting in the streams of sunlight; students hunched over their piles of books - it was an aura made for partaking the juices of knowledge. One felt as if it was a portal into several other worlds. One felt like a scholar - whether you were one or not!

Even today, whenever I enter the club premises, my primary thoughts are those of making a beeline for the library. Once inside I have a mélange of books to choose from. While I scan the shelves for my favorite authors, my daughter sits in a colorful little chair in the children’s section and flips pages of beautifully illustrated books. And I smile in wonder and gratitude.

Being a member of any library is a blessing. When you are within the walls of a library, surrounded by the heady scent of paper and ink, you are part of the fraternity of readers. Some read to acquire knowledge, some flip through journals and magazines to keep themselves updated with the latest news and trends; some come to escape the noise and chaos of the outside world and be encompassed - albeit for a few hours - in a bubble of imagination, fiction and reality.

There is no love sincerer than the love of food.

Punjabi Food Festival

Ayaz Siddiq convener Kitchen Committee along with his team organized PUNJABI FOOD FESTIVAL at Karachi Club Main on sunday 17th Feb 2013. The Program was largely attended by the members with their families who had the opportunity of having especially cooked Punjabi cuisine like Makai ki Roti and Sarsoon ka Saag,

Daal Makhni, Nargisi Kofta etc.

The Festival was well complimented by Punjabi Cultural songs and Bhangras.

The idea behind organizing such festival was to give members a chance to enjoy a different taste which is normally not served as the regular menu.
