Region News
Region 12:
It seems as if now we are in the ―calm before the storm‖ part of
our season, we’re finally starting to clean off the boats, start getting
them ready to go and get a few test sessions in there. For Region 12,
our season will resume in about 5 weeks in San Dimas, CA at
Puddingstone Reservoir, March 24-25. Like in Parker this past
Thanksgiving, we are expecting to have a very high ASH boat count,
could be up to 15 ASH’s and maybe even more to come! I’m
getting really excited to see what all this race brings in.
This past month has been pretty crazy for me, 3 weeks ago; I
spent a week in Chicago, IL for the APBA Annual Meeting. It was a
great experience to go to all the meetings possible and then spend
time with all the other racers that were there from all over the
country. I met a lot of new people, and the trip gave me so many
new memories that will forever be remembered. Being there I was
so busy, I went to every Stock Outboard and J Class meeting, and
even a few inboard meetings. I also put in a bid for a grant from the
APBA Historical Society for some money to buy a ―loaner‖ cut suit for
a driving school that we are trying to start in Region 12 that passed.
We are trying to do everything we can to get as many new people
in boats as possible and to help promote our sport and to reduce
the barriers to entry by having readily available equipment for any
new drivers. We are looking forward to getting a lot of new people
into some boats this upcoming season.
Also this past month, we (boat racers) were given the entire
entry way to the Los Angeles Convention Center just for our race
boats to be on display, in hopes to bring in some new racers. We
had a lot of people that seemed seriously interested in the boats,

mainly the ―little boats‖ and the SST45’s. We had 9 boats on display,
of those 9 boats we had 3 ASH’s, one being Dave Hale’s 42-C, Nicole
Knudson’s ―Splash‖ 29-C, and Marlee Hill’s 1-C; there were also 2 SST
45’s, one being Dean Comer’s 37 and the other being Chuck
Skelton’s 93, driven by RJ West; there were also 2 Classic Outboard
Runabouts (COR’s) one belonging to Mike Quindazzi, and the other
belonging to Tim Carranza; also there was a Comp Jet there
belonging to Gary Gosliga and an old Patterson Endurance Boat
powered by an Allison V-12 World War II airplane engine, the 80-K
―Super Cinders‖ belonging to Mike Leach. I want to personally thank
Dave Hale, the entire Knudson family, Chuck Skelton, Dean Comer,
Angie Jolly, Trisha Thomas, Jason Taylor, Tim and Dave Caranza, Rod
Zapf, Mike Leach, Carla Mulford, and Gary Gosliga for all the help in
working the booth for us, and most importantly I would like to thank
Mike Quindazzi for putting this all together and making it all possible;
Thank you Mike also for all your hard work you are putting in to our
region. We definitely had a great turn out of people coming over to
check out all the race boats, with a lot of new interest! There were a
lot of people that were really excited and really eager to come out
to the Puddingstone race too to check it out, I’m really excited to
see how many people show up, I told quite a few people about
having them try it out and go for a boat ride and they were really
interested as well, so hopefully we will be getting several new drivers,
just coming from the boat show! My goal this season is to bring in 5
new drivers, we’ll see!
Looking forward to seeing everyone in Puddingstone, good
luck to everyone trying to get all their equipment dialed in, and I’ll
see you all out on the water!
