WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA

The annual laying of the wreaths at the Houston National Cemetery was held this year on Saturday, December 10, 2011, at 11 AM. Our members, will make sure that the deceased members of TLSC receive a wreath, plus as many others as possible. Our goal was to double the amount of wreaths purchased last year. The donations through the TLSC has reached $3,490.62, more than twice the amount from last year. Our veterans have hearts of gold. The goal of the WAA was to decorate the 25,000 plus graves at the cemetery, they were able to cover over 31,000 graves.

REMEMBERING OUR VETERENS THANK YOU!!!

Skeleton in the Closet……. A very large, old, building was being torn down in Chicago to make room for a new skyscraper. Due to its proximity to other buildings, it could not be imploded and had to be dismantled floor by floor. While working on the 49th floor, two construction workers found a skeleton in a small closet behind the elevator shaft. They decided that they should call the police. When the police arrived they directed them to the closet and showed them the skeleton fully clothed and standing upright. They said “This could be Jimmy Hoffa or somebody really important.” Two days went by and the construction workers couldn’t stand it any more; they had to know who they had found. They called the police and said. “We are the two guys who found the skeleton in the closet and we want to know if it was Jimmy Hoffa or somebody important.” The police said, “It’s not Jimmy Hoffa, but it was somebody kind of important.” “Well, who was it?” “The 1956 Blonde National Hide-and-Seek Champion.”

A wife was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her husband. Suddenly, her husband burst into the kitchen, “Careful’ he said ‘CAREFUL! Put in some more butter! Oh my gosh! You’re cooking too many at once. TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter. Oh my gosh! WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They’re going to STICK! Careful. CAREFUL! I said be CAREFUL! You NEVER listen to me when you’re cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you CRAZY? Have you LOST your mind? Don’t forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the Salt. USE THE SALT! THE SALT!” The wife stared at him. ‘What in the world is wrong with you? You think I don’t know how to fry a couple of eggs?’ The husband calmly replied, ‘I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I’m driving.’ A little boy was waiting for his mother to come out of the grocery store. As he waited, he was approached by a man who asked. “Son, can you tell me where the Post Office is?” The little boy replied, “Sure! Just go straight down this street a coupla blocks and turn to your right.” The man thanked the boy kindly and said, “I’m the new pastor in town. I’d like for you to come to church on Sunday. I’ll show you how to get to Heaven.” The little boy replied with a chuckle. “Awww, come on…. You don’t even know the way to the Post Office.”

CONGRATULATIONS !!! BY EVA MARTINEZ

On Saturday afternoon, 2/4/12, Henry and I attended the GHCAA Division II Championship Girls Varsity Basketball game. The game was between St. Ambrose and St. Cecilia Catholic Schools, and was held in the St. Thomas High gym. Our grand-daughter, Anessa Fernandez, is an 8th grader and basketball player at St. Ambrose. The previous week, the St. Ambrose “Lady Hornets” defeated three other Catholic schools, thus moving them into the Championship slot. Both teams were equally strong contenders, and came out fighting. It was such a high energy game, but at the end, St. Ambrose triumphed, defeating St. Cecilia 31-26. This was a great achievement for the St. Ambrose team since they earned their FIRST ever 1st place girls basketball trophy for the school. The trophy is huge and beautiful. WAY TO GO GIRLS.

In the m e a n t i me , w h i l e watching the g a m e , H o u s t o n A s t r o s , C r a i g B i g g i o , came into the gym to see what the

ruckus was about. Since his retirement, Biggio volunteers at St. Thomas and during the baseball season, he coaches. Henry went over to say hello, and they talked about the “Honor All Veterans Day”.at Minute Mai Park, and the Honor Guard. Henry and Bob Mitchell have been working with this baseball program for many years. Biggio also knows Bob Mitchell through their many years of working with the “Sunshine Kids”. All-in-all, despite the rain, it was a very exciting afternoon.

MIA FAMILY UPDATE By David & Frances Velasco

On Saturday, Feb. 25th, we attended the Annual Family Update held by the Department of Defense, which is held within the closest proximity possible to encourage family members to attend. It was held at the Westin Galleria Hotel in Dallas. This was the largest gathering of Family members since the start of the Family Updates in 1995. A total of 350 family members from WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Cold War eras were in attendance. The largest group being from Korea. They reported that there are about 800 Korean War servicemen buried at the Punch Bowl in Hawaii as “Unknowns”. Their DNA was destroyed by the embalming process used in the 1950’s. The Identification Lab in Hawaii has had difficulty identifying any of these remains since that time. However, there is hope! They are going to try using the chest X-Rays taken of the servicemen when they entered the service. They are working on digitalization of these X-Rays to compare to the remains of the unknowns. Also, they did say, that they were going to N. Korea where they know that they have large numbers of American

servicemen missing. To Unsan and to the Chosin Reservoir. They plan this for April 2012 through October 2012. The Recovery Program is budgeted through 2014. Two of the speakers requested the families to get in touch with their government Representatives to support and keep the Recovery Program ongoing. Also, to encourage other family members to attend the Family Updates. The Recovery Program is a very expensive operation. Whenever they go to a remote location they have to take everything with them that they could possibly need, water food, etc. They also have to hire a helicopter for emergency medical evacuations. The Korean and Cold War Annual Government Briefing will be held at the Sheraton Premiere at Tyson’s Corner, in Vienna, Virginia, April 19-20, 2012. There is a “COIN Assist” Program that covers the cost of commercial air travel for qualified family members. The Army Casualty Office will send you a registration packet that includes instructions on completing the “COIN Assist” Forms. The toll free telephone number is 1-800-892-2490. The packet should also include information about making reservations at the hotel and deadlines.

If you know any family members of missing servicemen, please pass this information to them.

KOREAN WAR EXPERIEN1CES PROGRAM By Bob Mitchell

For the benefit of our newest members, we have a program that has been in operation for a few years now where Chapter members talk about their Korean War experiences at one of our General Meetings. The talks are videotaped, and copies go to the speaker, to our Chapter records, to our webmaster and one copy goes to the National Korean War Museum for their permanent archives. The webmaster posts the video on our Chapter website, where friends and relatives can view it, no matter where they are. If you go to our website at kwvahouston.org you can see those already there. To date, there are over 30 videos posted. You should consider this opportunity to tell your story for the benefit of you families. Four of those posted are of members now deceased and their families were very happy to have this memento of them to enjoy To sign up for the program, contact Don Napp at 281-443-1809 or at [email protected]. Don will sign you up and tell you how the program works and how to prepare for it. For all you other members who have not yet done so, there is plenty of room for you as well. Do it today. You won't regret it. This program will give your children and grandchildren a visual account and written account, (as most of you will need to write your thoughts down) of your activities during the war. This is something everyone should have to pass on to their family. The editor requests a copy of your experience to put in the newsletter. Thank You!!!
