Have you ever wondered why we age? Oxidative stress has been identified as a primary cause of aging and it occurs as a result of exposure to toxins, pollution, chemicals, drugs, and through normal daily metabolic processes. Free

radicals inside the body, resulting from oxidative stress, can damage DNA and impair the integrity of a cell. This dam-age may lead to acceleration in aging and the onset of age-related diseases, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and age-related macular degeneration.

Are certain nutrients protective against aging? Antioxidants are the foot soldiers in the fight against free radicals and aging. They neutralize free radicals, thereby limiting the threat caused by cellular damage. Are you looking for a sweet treat to boost your antioxidants? Sun-sweet promotes the healing and anti-aging properties of antioxidants in its Antioxidant Blend of dried fruits—cherries, plums, blueberries, and cranberries. Look on the back of the package to see an Antioxidant Chart that gives an Antioxidant Score of 9456 for cranberries, 9019 for blueberries, 7291 for plums and 3361 for cherries. These are some of the highest ORAC scores reported. (See the FYI below on ‘How to measure antioxidants’)

The Antioxidant Score is given for 100 g and is based on fresh not dried fruit. A cup of fresh blueberries weighs about 150 g so a 100 g serving of fresh blueberries is about 2/3 cup. Because the drying pro-cess results in the loss of nutrients and antioxidants, it is hard to deter-mine the amount of antioxidants in dried fruits. Pros: Great source of antioxidants.

Cons: Dried fruit is higher in calories and sugar than fresh. The Sun-sweet Antioxidant Blend has added sugar.

These dried fruits are tasty but quite sweet.

I HowtoMeasureAntioxidantsHow do you know how many antioxidants are in the foods you eat? In a published report by the USDA, the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) score for fruits, nuts, and vegetables were compiled. Knowing the ORAC score for a food is helpful in determining the benefits of the product and for comparing products, side-by-side. Various levels of antioxidants have been reported in scientific literature. For instance, Sunsweet used research reported in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (2004) for the blueberry ORAC score of 9019. USDA ORAC Database.

LiptonGreenTea

“Live Better Every Day,” Lipton’s new slogan and packaging for their tea varieties is fitting, considering the high concentration of powerful flavonoid antioxidants found in green tea. Lipton brand teas have begun adding an AOX symbol, short for antioxidants, to their tea packaging, promoting the naturally high antioxidant content found in teas.

Tea is an excellent, natural source of flavonoids, which are potent antioxidants that may help prevent coronary heart disease, certain types of cancers, and help strengthen the body’s immune system. The Lipton green tea contains 130 mg of flavonoid antioxidants per cup of brewed tea. Compare that to roughly 30 mg of flavonoids in a 50 g serving of chocolate, about one half of a regular chocolate bar, or 35 to 40 mg of flavonoids in a 5 oz glass of red wine. Be aware that regular green tea naturally contains caffeine, about 30 to 50 mg per 8 oz cup (about a third of the caffeine that’s in an 8 oz cup of brewed coffee).

Pros: Contains 130 mg of antioxidants per tea bag. Non-caloric source of antioxidants.

Cons: None

I am a believer in the benefits of green tea and start my morning off with a cup of green tea and drink iced green tea in the afternoon.

FY

I GreenTeamayBoostYourMetabolism

Green tea is great for your health and possibly also your waistline! Not only does tea contain fla-vonoids, which can help fight aging through antioxidant protection, but tea may also boost your metabolism. New research indicates that a substance in tea may increase the amount of calories burned throughout the day. Studies show that drinking green tea may help you burn an extra 60 to 80 calories per day. The additional calorie burn may not be enough for significant weight loss, but replacing green tea for a sweetened latte or a sugary beverage will certainly help to decrease overall calorie intake, and may possibly promote weight loss. Read research.

Langer’sAllPomegranateJuice

With it’s beautifully, vibrant red color and its tremendous anti-aging health benefits, the pomegranate is an assured nutrition winner. Pome-granates have an ORAC score of 10,500, nearly seven times the ORAC score of apples, are excellent sources of vitamin C and potassium, and have a high concentration of polyphenols (see FYI below on Polyphe-nols). Also check out the antioxidant rich recipe below for a Jicama, Green Bean, and Pomegranate salad using fresh pomegranates and pomegranate juice.

Langer’s is 100% all pomegranate juice that contains no added sugar, sweeteners or colors. Each 8 oz glass of All Pomegranate Juice contains 595 mg of polyphenols. That’s about three times the antioxidant activity of red wine and green tea.

Pros: 100% juice, 45% DV vitamin C, all natural, no added sugar.

Cons: 150 calories in an 8 oz serving, that’s about the same amount that’s in a regular can of soda and just a little more than orange juice (120). Each serving contains 34 grams of natural sugar compared to 24 g in orange juice.

The taste is slightly tart, not too sweet, and tannic.

FY

I TheHealthBenefitsofFlavonoids

There are more than 4,000 known flavonoids in existence that have been implicated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, a decreased risk of cancer, and a decrease in LDL oxidation which, in turn, reduces the risk of atherosclerosis. The USDA has a published report that compares the flavo-noid content of fruits, vegetables, nuts and beverages. This report looks specifically at the above mentioned flavonoids and the content in the reference foods. USDA Flavanoid Data Page.

GreenGiantImmunityBoostFrozenVegetableBlend

Enhanced immunity is just one of the many benefits of a diet high in antioxidants. Immunity Boost is one of three delicious frozen vegetable blends that Green Giant has created for targeted health benefits. This high antioxidant blend of broccoli, carrots, red and green peppers is tossed in an herb infused extra virgin olive oil seasoning. Each serving provides 50% of your daily vitamin C and 30% of your daily vitamin A, both important nutrients in enhanced immunity. The other vegetable blends include Healthy Weight, a blend high in fiber (5 g), and Healthy Vision, high in vitamin A and beta-carotene.

Pros: Excellent sources of vitamin A (30% DV) and vitamin C (50% DV), only 50 calories per serving, and the 3 g of fat is from extra virgin olive oil, which is a great source of monounsaturated fats.

Cons: Half of the calories (25) in the vegetable blend are from fat, although a good fat.

The sauce is delicious and the vegetables are firm and crisp

NewTreeBlushFineBelgianDarkChocolate

Antioxidants are plentiful in fruits and vegetables, and thankfully for those of us with a sweet tooth, they are also abundant in dark choco-late. Dark chocolate is a naturally rich source of the polyphenol antho-cyanin. (See the FYI below.) NewTree, a Belgian chocolate company promoting the marriage of gastronomy and health, has created a line of dark chocolate rich in antioxidants. The Blush dark chocolate bar com-bines the sweet taste of berries and cherries and the rich taste of dark chocolate. Through the addition of grape extract and cherries, this bar gets an antioxidant boost. The bar boasts more antioxidants than two glasses of red wine.

Pros: High cocoa content (73%). The more cocoa, the more healthy antioxidants. Added cherries and grape extract. High fiber (6g). Excel-lent source of magnesium (20% DV) and good source of phosphorus (10% DV).

Cons: One serving contains 200 calories and 15 grams of fat. High in saturated fat (10 g).

Delicious dark chocolate bar with the sweet taste of cherries and berries. Remember, dark chocolate may be loaded with antioxidants but it is also loaded with calories, 200 in each serving due to the 15 g of fat per serving. Like all treats, enjoy in moderation.

FY

I AnthocyaninsAnthocyanins are a phytochemical and antioxidant found most often in red-blue fruits and vegetables, and heavily concentrated in the skins of red grapes. In fact, red grapes have 888 mg of anthocyanins per 100 g, more than double the amount found in an equal sized sample of cherries. Research has shown that anthocyanins may help to prevent cancer, act as an anti-inflam-matory agent, may slow the progression of aging and may be effective in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy. Other good sources of anthocyanins include blueberries, blackberries, and eggplants. Read the research.

LakewoodAçaiAmazonBerryJuiceBlend

The açai berry (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) is one of the Amazon Rain-forest’s super fruits. Grown on the trunk of palm trees, this berry boasts more antioxidants than pomegranates and red wine. The açai berry has 320 mg of the antioxidant anthocyanin in each 100 gram sample, a quantity 30 times greater than that found in red wine. The USDA has not evaluated the antioxidant capacity of the açai berry but other institu-tions claim that it is higher than blueberries or pomegranate

Lakewood Açai juice contains all of the wonderful properties of the açai berry and is USDA organic. The juice is loaded with health-promot-ing, anti-aging properties, including essential fatty acids, 200% DV of vitamin A, 100% of the daily value of vitamin C, and 3 grams of fiber per serving. The juice contains micro-nutrients to help slow premature aging and macular degeneration, an amino acid complex that facilitates muscle function, is rich in vitamins and minerals for immune support, and super nutrients enhance memory and concentration. This juice is definitely a winner in the nutrition category.

Pros: Organic. 100% juice. Contains omega oils (30 mg omega 3,450 mg omega 6, 1825 mg omega 9), 100% DV vitamin A and C. Antioxidants.

Cons: Contains 3 g of fat, although good omega-3 fats.

This juice is thick and slightly sweet with an unusual yet very pleasant and satisfying taste.

RepublicofTeaSuperfruitTeainAçaiGreenTea

Combining the health benefits of green tea with the antioxidant power of superfruits is just what the Republic of Tea has done. The Super-fruit Tea line by the Republic of Tea blends green tea with one of six superfruits. The line includes Acerola Cherry Green Tea, Açai Green Tea, Goji Raspeberry Green Tea, Blueberry Green Tea, Pomegranate Green Tea, and Black Raspberry Green Tea. The Republic of Tea promotes the superior antioxidant content found in this line-up of teas, including: vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids, and phytochemicals. The Açai Green Tea is rich in the antioxidants found naturally in açai berry and has the added benefits of green tea. As stated on their website, “Vibrant flavors and china green tea deliver powerful antioxidant value.” Anti-aging is just a sip away.

Pros: Green tea is rich in polyphenols and açai is rich in anthocyanins so this tea packs a powerhouse of antioxidants.

Cons: More expensive than other teas. The price is about $0.19/tea bag, compared to Lipton’s cost of about $0.11/tea bag.

Delicious fruit taste mixed with delicate green tea. The taste is something similar to that of grapes and blueberries, yet slightly more tart on the palette. Also makes great iced tea.

FY

I PreparationmethodforGreenTeaWhen preparing green tea, you will want your water just below boiling, about 165-185˚F. Some of the nutrients may be lost if the water is boiling and the tea may have a bitter after taste. Green tea should be steeped between 1-3 minutes for full flavor. Discard the tea bag after steeping to prevent over brewing your tea.

10 Tips to Prevent Aging

AiS

le Tips

by AiSle

1. Haveadailydoseofomega-3sOmega-3’s are important for the treatment of hypertension, decreased inflammation, prevention of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and for healthy cell membranes. Fatty fish, flax seeds, and almonds are all good sources of omega-3 essential fatty acids.

• Have two 3-oz servings of salmon or other fatty fish a week and a daily serving of ground flaxseed, walnuts, soybean oil, spinach or kale.

2. DrinkgreenteaGreen tea contains flavonoids, which can help fight aging through antioxidant protection and may also boost your metabolism.

• Brew a couple of cups of green tea in the morning and use what is left for ice tea in the afternoon.

3. DoubleyourfiberFiber helps protect against cancer, can keep blood sugar levels steady, and promote heart health. The daily recom-mendation is 25 to 35 g per day; most people get half this amount.

• Boost your intake with cooked lentils (8 g per ½ cup), barley (16 g per ½ cup) , an apple (4 g per medium), and raspberries (8g per cup).

4. ThinkwholegrainsVitamin E, an important antioxidant, can be found in abundance in whole grains. The magnesium and B vita-mins found in whole grains can help with regeneration of skin cells.

• The USDA recommends that you make half of your grains whole, or roughly 3 to 5 ounces or of whole grains each day.

5. ColoryourplatewithfruitsandvegetablesFruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants and nutrients. Red, blue, and purple fruits and veggies are rich in the phytochemical anthocyanin, orange fruits and veggies are rich in vitamin A and beta-carotene, red fruits and veggies are rich sources of lycopene, and vitamin C can be found in citrus fruits.

• The USDA recommends that you eat about nine serv-ings of fruits and vegetables each day. Eat a colorful variety—red, blue, purple, orange, and dark green.

6. DrinkwaterHydration is vital for keeping the skin clear and for the elimination of toxins from the body.

• Although the water recommendation varies from per-son-to-person, in general, you should aim for about 8, 8 ounce glasses of water daily.

7. EatforstrongbonesCalcium, vitamin D, and magnesium are important nutri-ents for maintaining strong bones and teeth, parts of the body that can deteriorate with age.

• Get 4 servings of dairy a day—a cup of milk or yogurt. Choose fat free to cut down on bad fat. Look for prod-ucts that are fortified with vitamin D and magnesium.

8. FocusongoodfatsThe good-for-you fats are monounsaturated fatty acids that can lower bad LDL Cholesterol, raise cardio-pro-tective HDL cholesterol, and decrease your risk of atherosclerosis.

• Healthy fats include olive oil, canola oil, avocado, almonds, and pistachios.

9. TreatyourselfwithdarkchocolateandredwineRed wine contains resveratrol, a potent antioxidant that decreases inflammation and protects arteries. And chocolate contains flavanols that help keep your blood vessels young.

• Limit yourself to one 5-oz glass of wine a day; more could be harmful. Choose dark chocolate with a high cocoa content.

If you are looking for a healthy snack, Old London’s snack line is a nutrition bargain and they have just introduced new flavors for your enjoyment. The classic Melba rounds now come in Spicy 3 Pepper, White Cheddar and Sea Salt. They are all low fat (1 g) and sodium (125 to 140 mg) with no sugar and 2 g of pro-tein. You get 4 rounds for 50 calories and the added benefit of 5 g of whole grains.

The new Melba Toast flavors are Sourdough and Rosemary & Olive Oil. They are also low in fat (0.5 g) and sodium (110 mg) with no sugar and 2 g of protein. You can have 3 pieces of toast for 60 calories.

Pros: Low fat (0 to 1g). Tasty new flavors.

Cons: None.

Old London Melba Snacks are a staple in my cupboard. They are ideal for dips and creative toppings and also go great with soups and salads.

HoneyKix

Is your family resistant to whole grains? My grandkids did not reject the new whole grain Honey Kix from General Mills. Each 1¼ cup serving contains 16 g of whole grains and 3 g of fiber with only 6 g of sugar. Kids won’t miss the sugar with the natural sweetness of these corn puffs. In addition, there are no artificial flavors or preservatives and they con-tain a good to excellent source of 12 vitamins and minerals including 15% DV calcium, 50% DV iron, and 50% folic acid.

If your kids like to read cereal boxes, this one will give them a lesson in nutrition with an explanation of % Daily Value and the importance of calcium and vitamin D for growing up strong.

Pros: Contains a serving of whole grains (16 g), a good source of fiber (3 g) and 12 vitamins and minerals.

Cons: None.

My grandkids liked this cereal and I liked that they were not getting an overly sweet cereal to start their day. If you or your kids want to know more about whole grains, check out www.WholeGrainNation.com, a General Mills website. The Whole Grain Quiz is well done and informative.

PureViaSweetener

There has been a whirlwind of product development activity since the USDA recently declared that rebaudioside A (reb A) derived from the stevia plant, is generally recognized as safe (GRAS). Stevia is calo-rie-free, making it an attractive choice for low- and no-calorie foods. In addition it is natural, which enhances the health and wellness benefits. Cargil and Coca-Cola Co. were betting on its success and introduced their rebA table-top sweetener Truvia into grocery stores in May 2008. Merisant Co.’s Whole Earth Sweetener unit teamed with Pepsi and Pure-Circle to develop PureVia stevia-derived sweetener

Each stick of PureVia is as sweet as 2 teaspoons of sugar, but with zero calories and only 2 g of carbohydrate. It is 200 times sweeter than sugar. The ingredient statement for PureVia lists in addition to Reb A, erythritol, a sugar alcohol found in fruits; isomaltulose, a sugar found in honey and sugar cane juice; and cellulose powder, a white powder derived from fibrous plants that gives PureVia a flow and texture similar to sugar. Although erythritol is a sugar alcohol, it does not normally cause the laxative effects that have been reported with other sugar alcohols and most people should have no side effects.

Pros: Natural sweetener made from the stevia plant. Calorie free with just 2 g of carbohydrates per serving.

Cons: None

We found the taste of PureVia similar to sugar. This is a good choice for blood sugar control and those who are looking for gluten-free foods.

FiberOneFrostedShreddedWheatCereal

Over the past several years, Fiber One has gone from their original extremely high fiber (14 g in 1/2 cup) cereal to a high fiber flake (13 g per cup), raisin bran cluster (11 g per cup), caramel squares (9 g per cup) and now they have introduced a frosted shredded wheat with 8 g fiber in a 1 cup serving. All Fiber One cereals contain at least 8 g of whole grains and are good to excellent sources of 11 vitamins and minerals.

Fiber One Frosted Shredded Wheat cereal has the added benefit of extra iron (90% DV) and 5 g of protein. The added frosting boosts the sugar content to 12 g from 0 g in the original Fiber One, which is artifi-cially sweetened with aspartame. Other varieties list ‘high fructose corn syrup’ and ‘sucralose’ as ingredients. General Mills has eliminated the high fructose corn syrup and artificial sugars in the Fiber One Frosted Shredded Wheat and Caramel Squares.

Pros: Excellent source of fiber (8 g) and a good source of whole grains (8 g). Low in fat (1 g) and sodium-free.

Cons: None

Fiber One cereals are a great way to boost the fiber in your diet and this new variety is a tasty alternative. In fact, Fiber One Cereals won the 2008 Chefs Best Taste award.

I AreShoppersSatisfiedwithNutritionInformationinSupermarkets?

The majority of shoppers are satisfied with the nutritional and health information provided by their primary food stores, according to research conducted by the National Grocers Association and underwritten by ConAgra Foods. The 2009 Consumer Panel Survey detailed the purchase influences, eating habits, and nutritional concerns of over 2000 consumers between November 2008 and Janu-ary 2009. When rating the importance of supermarket features, 3 in 10 consumers (31%) say the availability of nutrition and health information is ‘very important’; another 41% say it is ‘somewhat important.’ Main consumer concerns surrounding the healthfulness of the foods they eat include fat content (14%), chemical additives (11%), salt/sodium content (9%), sugar content (7%), and calories (7%). Read report.

Annie’sHomegrownBunnyFruit

Kids love fruit snacks but how much fruit are they really getting? Annie’s Organic Bunny Snacks claim that they are made with “Real Fruit Juice,” while the only fruit juice listed on the ingredient list for both the Tropical Treat and Berry Patch is “organic white grape juice concentrate”–no tropical fruit or berry juice mentioned. And the grape juice is 4th on the list after organic tapioca syrup, organic cane sugar, and organic tapioca syrup concentrate. However, the amount of sugar (57% of calories) is lower than most fruit snacks) (59% to 70% of calo-ries).

Another concern of fruit snacks is food colors. Many fruit snacks contain artificial colors but Annie’s Bunny Fruit contains only natural colors (black carrot juice, turmeric, and annatto).

Pros: Organic. Clean label with no preservatives or artificial ingredients. 100% DV or vitamin C.

Cons: No fiber and the only juice mentioned is white grape juice.

My grandkids enjoyed Annie’s Fruit Bunnies. Their favorite is the Berry Patch.

Shoppers will have more information about where their food comes from under a new policy enacted by Congress called the Country of Origin Legislation. Labels on must fresh meats, along with some fruits, vegetables and other foods, will now list where the food originated. In the case of meats, labels will list where the animal was born, raised, and slaughtered. The new rules aim to make it easier for regular consumers to know whether their food was imported or not.
