A Letter From Tke Presi<lentMusical Theater
Welcome to the fourth show of SLOC's 88th season. So far
this season we've taken you to Transylvania with V.ocky
Horror, the Kingdom of Duloc with Shrek, and a tropical
island io'! South Pacific. Tonight we will transport you to a
nightclub where songs you know and love will be performed
by an amazingly talented cast. The songs of Jerry Lcibcr and
Mike Stoller are part of the foundation of rock and roll, and
artists as varied as The Drifters, Elvis Presley, The Coasters,
and the Searchers all recorded Top Ten songs from their catalogue. In discussing
this show, Peter Marks of the Washington Post noted that "This show paved the
way for the musical fashioned on existing work of pop composers." Without this
one, Jersey Boys, Mama Mia, Movin'Out, and Beautiful might never have been
made. Sit back and enjoy a trip down Memory Lane.
In May, We will bring Monty Python's to our stage, under the direction
of Adam Coons. This wild romp based on the comedy troupe's movie of the same
name promises to leave the audience limp with laughter.
The SLOC Board of Directors has also announced our tentative slate of shows for
next season (rights are still pending), and we hope you will be as excited by it
as we are. Legally Blonde, directed by Michael Lotano will open the year in late
September, and, in December, SevMoro will direct this year's youth production
oiDisney's Beauty and the Beast. February will hxingSweeney Todd to the stage
under the direction of Rachael Sheffer. Michael Gatzendorfer will take us back
in time for//aw* in March, and we will close the season with The Producers in
May under the direction of Suzanne Rayome. We are also planning a fund raising
performance in conjunction with MOPCO in late October, so watch for details on
that event. I hope you will plan now to buy the entire season to support the area's
finest amateur community theater.
Now sit back and join us on a journey that will take us through Broadway, Kansas
City, and Spanish Harlem as we relive the songs of Leiber and Stoller. We hope to
see you again in May.

SLQC A Letter F rom Tke DirectorMusicaJ Theater
Smokey Joe's Cafe is a musical revue showcasing 39 pop
standards - including rock and roll and rhythm and blues songs
- by songwriters Jerry Leiber and iMike Stoller. When the show
opened on Broadway in 1992, it ran for 2,036 performances,
making it the longest running revue in Broadway history. But my
first e.Kperience with Smokey Joe's wasn't seeing the show, but
hearing the music around my house. Leiber and Stoller standards
were part of my childhood. My father, who grew up with their
music, owned many of the original LPs, and he'd play them around the house. My
Saturday mornings were filled with songs like "There Goes My Baby" and "Love Potion
#9." My dad would school me in the "great artists" of his time and compare them to the
"drivel" I was listening to at the time. And while we debated over who had the better
taste in music, 1 learned a great deal. 1 even conceded that some of his choices in
music were better than mine. As 1 got older, I really began to see his point. Eventually
1 began to question whether 1 was born in the wrong time period, as I fell in love with
the simple melodies that conveyed such strong emotions but at the same time had
such light hearted joy.
Working on the production has been a blessing in so many ways, I get to share the
stage with some of the greatest talent in the Capital Region, not to mention the peoplewho are behind the scenes making thing happen, rolling with the punches, all with
such positive energy. So I invite you to sit back and take a journey with us to an era
where, with the help of Big Mama Thornton, Elvis Presley, The Drifters, The Coasters
and numerous other artist who ruled the charts, Leiber and Stoller created a style that
was entirely new, and all American.
Enjoy the shoiv!

Producers: KImberly Rellly & Joanne Dame Peal
Leiber and Stoller, as much as anyone, virtually invented rock 'n' roll, and now their songs
provide the basis for an electrifying entertainment that illuminates a golden age of American
culture. In an idealized '50's setting, the classic themes of love won, lost and imagined blend
with hilarious set-pieces and slice-of-lifc emotions. Featuring nearly 40 of the greatest songs
ever recorded, Sw.okey Joe's Cafe isn't just great poj) music - it's compelling musical theatre.
