Many people do not realize that the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival is actually made up of two separate shows. Now in its 47th year, the Outdoor Art Show hosted by the Eastern Shore Art Center is located north of Magno-lia Avenue along Section Street, on Equality Street and on Oak Street in front of the Art Center. The show includes up to 125 booths of fine artists and craftspeople, attracting more than 350,000 visitors each spring. The Outdoor Art Show is a major fundraiser for the Art Center, allowing free admission to the public all year round.

Gallery and gift shop hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, visit www.esartcenter.org.

The pro-ceeds from the festival are used to award scholarships and donations to various groups in the Fairhope com-munity. To date, over $100,000 in proceeds have been awarded to area students and groups in the Fairhope community

For hundreds of miles around, the same scenario plays out. Since 1952, when the first Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival was held, urban explorers, shoppers, gift buyers, women-on-a-mission, honeymooners and families with children, have headed to South Alabama for a special weekend of each year in Fairhope! In the beginning, the Arts and Crafts Show featured local art-ists on storefronts and in show-windows and it lasted all week long. For those early shows, the exhibitors spent four to five hours a day demonstrating their crafts and painting, while visitors looked over their shoulders and shopped in the stores.

The saga in Lafayette, Louisiana was no different. Twelve husbands said, “Sure, go have a fun girls’ week-end. Don’t get into any trouble;” then they tossed their golf clubs into the van and drove off to catch a T-time. And that was the end of that discussion. But it was only the beginning of this fling! Fifteen years later the “Lafayette Ladies” are still doing it!

The QuestIn the fall of 2004, coffee together each morning for

Joyce Prince and a dozen or so girlfriends was a daily weekday routine. The group of ladies had been friends since kindergarten, attending school together at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Lafayette. Now, they were grown and with families, but still teenagers at heart. On this particular morning, they got into a discussion about going on a girls’ weekend somewhere — anywhere; just somewhere fun. Over the next three months, ideas were tossed out … and tossed out, until they decided that their destination should be the Point Clear Marriott Grand Hotel, near Fairhope, Alabama. “We didn’t know what was there,” Joyce recalls, “but a hotel with spa, beach, pools and several specialty

restaurants, can’t be all-bad! And the only prerequisite was ‘don’t get into trouble.’” So they booked the resort.

The ladies arrived at the Grand Hotel on Thursday, March 17, 2005 with the specific intent to celebrate a 50th birthday party. Upon their arrival, the hotel’s receptionist asked, “What brings you ladies to the Grand?” And they commenced to sound like the sales force for a travel blog, espousing the virtues of the Eastern Shore, the bay and touting quotations from the hotel brochures.

“We love it here…, we think. We have heard about the hotel, Fairhope and the beaches, so here we are.”

“Are you here for the Arts and Crafts Festival?” “No, never heard of it; what’s that?” “It’s starting tomorrow,” said the receptionist. “It will

get a little crazy around here this weekend; it draws lots of people to Fairhope each March, and this is the week! You are in for a treat, or misery, depending on how you feel about creative art and home furnishings.” The girls glanced at each other with a curious, but unrevealing look; “We don’t know, but we’ll check it out,” they responded, as they turned to follow the bell captain to their rooms.

Before leaving Lafayette, they had bought tickets online for a sailing adventure on Mobile Bay the next day, so they gathered the next morning for coffee and a muffin. As they entered the dining room, they thought there must be a big tourist convention under way. The room was full of ladies, summer wear, fannie packs and umbrellas.

“What is this all about? Is there a convention in town?”

“No it’s the Fairhope Festival. We’re getting an early start.”

Joyce and her entourage waited for a table and hast-ily ate their muffins. They then retrieved their cars and on the way up Scenic Highway 98, couldn’t believe the traffic. But they were holding reservations to be sailors for the day, so they were committed.

When they returned to Fairhope after their sail, they

again were taken back by the crowds; not because of the people, but because of blocked streets, buses and the lack of parking places in this “small town”. They soon learned that there are never empty parking places in Fairhope, and especially during Arts and Crafts Weekend. Thankfully, their Saturday was free so they decided to see what the clamor was all about. Six of the twelve ladies solved the parking problem by taking the hotel courtesy shuttle to the Festival that next after-noon, only to realize they didn’t allow enough time for the Festival. “Well, we know where we are coming next year,” they chimed! And in March 2006, they returned; and again the year after, and the year after — just to at-tend the Festival.

The Festival The next year, they had planned ahead. When they

arrived downtown Fairhope on Friday morning, the crowd was already building. Ten a.m. was the official start time and the temperature was brisk in the sixties. As the artists opened their display canopies, art and crafts were suddenly everywhere! All visible streets were cordoned off and even the flowers on the street corners were protected by barricades. Prices and items varied from small wooden toys for kids to elegant paintings for elegant homes. Canvas booths were in the middle of the street as far as they could see up Sec-tion Street and when they arrived at Del la Mare, tents were all the way to the end. And when they crossed Fairhope Avenue, arts and craft displays were as far as they could see in all-four directions. Two blocks later, one street of well-stocked food vendors were displaying foods of all kinds, accenting the local seafood. Smokers and deep fryers were beginning to send scrumptious aromas into the air. By noon, the menus were irresist-ible and the proximity to the painted art and dimen-sional creations made it a non-stop venue.

“We now rent a house on Mobile Bay that will ac-commodate our whole gang! Nothing like one big slum-ber party that we treasure year after year.” says Joyce. “We arrive on Wednesday, shop the fabulous shops in Fairhope on Thursday, attend the Festival on Friday and Saturday, and return home on Sunday. All of our lives have changed in so many ways; most of us still re-side in Lafayette, but we do have a few that travel from Minneapolis and New York City to join in on the fun.

Even though we have lost two of the original twelve ladies to cancer, our tradition has continued and new old friends have joined our tradition.”

This past year, these mid-aged teenagers had a full house with thirteen ladies. “The house had a closed-in porch with 7 single beds and three additional bed-rooms that slept 6 people. The home is on the bay, with beautiful views and we giggled all weekend.”

“The first year celebration included matching themed T-shirts for all, a dinner at The Fairhope Inn, a sunset cruise on The Joshua, and a spa day at The Grand’s Spa. A few of our lady golfers managed to get in eighteen holes. Now our trip includes shopping till we drop! We enjoy sitting on the porch, having drinks by the bay and dining in, with great meals that we pre-pared before-hand and most importantly, reminiscing about days gone by.”

March, 2020 will be their 15th year of attending the Festival.

Today, the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival is a juried show with over 600 artists competing for 200 spaces. In 1997, the Forty-fifth Annual Arts and Crafts Festival was named one of the top two hundred festi-vals in the United States by Sunshine Artist magazine. Today, it’s bigger and better!

The Eastern Shore Art Center also holds its Arts and Crafts Show at the same time, nearly doubling the size and revenue of the event. Exhibitors from over twenty states are present. While it’s a very people and pet friendly setting, bringing pets into the Festival is now discouraged due to concern for the animals overheat-ing, the squeeze of the crowds and people carrying large items and can’t see their feet.

The Festival attracts an estimated 250,000 shoppers and enthusiasts over the 3-day weekend!

Next year, for hundreds of miles around, the same scenario will play out. And for the ladies from Lafay-ette, they will be back; giggling and reminiscing. And if invited, the husbands may come too. Particularly, if by now, they have learned about the popular Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, Jubilees and the beauty of Fairhope!

PARKING:

If you are traveling along Interstate 10, take Exit 35 and head south on US Highway 98. Continue follow-ing US Highway 98 for approximately 10 miles. Upon entering Fairhope on US Highway 98, also known as Greeno Road, you may turn right onto Fairhope Avenue

SHUTTLE SERVICES:Hot Wheels of Daphne will provide shuttle ser-

vice daily from 9:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from the area near the Fairhope Recreation Center on Highway 98/Greeno Road. This is the ONLY shuttle location. The charge will be $5 per person for unlimited trips per day. Parking will be free at this location. Look for signage on Highway 98 and for electronic signs direct-ing you to this location. The drop off location is at the intersection of Johnson Street and Bancroft Avenue.

HANDICAP PARKING:

Handicap parking will be located in downtown Fairhope on Bancroft behind the Fairhope Museum of History and behind the Fairhope Public Library. It will be available on a first come, first serve basis. There is also limited on street handicap parking and in the parking deck on North Church Street.

DOWNTOWN PARKING/TOWING:Parking will be available on a first come, first serve

basis in the public parking garage off of North Church Street and on street. Please pay attention to no parking signs during the Festival and do not block driveways. In the event your car is towed during the Festival, please call Tony’s Towing Service at 251-928-7334. The City and Festival Committee make every effort not to tow vehicles but it may be necessary if a drive-way or residence is blocked or if your vehicle inter-feres with the Festival activities.

BICYCLE VALET:Pedestrian and Bicycle Committee along with the

Baldwin County Trailblazers will have a Bike Valet set up in front of the Fairhope Public Library on Fairhope Avenue at Bancroft Street during event hours.For more information, please email the committee at: [email protected].

The City of Fairhope is providing handicapped parking spaces in the parking lot behind Julwin’s restaurant. Additional handicapped parking will be located in the Municipal Parking Lot on Bancroft. Once those parking spaces are filled, we recommend you park and ride the shuttle services.

Christmas Art is a rich part of Fairhope’s Legacy and the art series entitled The Twelve Days of Christmas has become one of the City’s most legendary symbols of the season. In Christian theology, the Twelve Days of Christmas are the days between the birth of Christ and the coming of the Magi — the three wise men; also called the Epiphany. The popular Christmas carol by the same name recalls gifts given when my “true love came to me.” These traditional themes have been brought to life by Fairhope artists.

In the mid-1950s, the City of Fairhope invited lo-cal artists to make creative wooden Christmas cutout figures from the Charles Dickens classics. These were displayed in stores and hung on lampposts and porch-es downtown. The artist community cherished the no-tion of showing its creativity throughout the city. And it brought magic to the holidays! Downtown businesses needed a boost and boosts they got!

The cosmetic lift sustained the holiday spirit for several years, but after a while, the artwork became tattered due to weather and zealous handling when put into storage. New decorations were needed. The City purchased some commercial decorations and those were used from the late 1960s through the early ‘70s. Then after almost a decade, the impersonal tinsel’s lus-ter began to wane. Some business owners and artisans in the city rejuvenated the original painted Christmas placards. And the idea gained the support of the City of Fairhope’s mayor, James P. Nix, the Fairhope Chamber of Commerce, the Fairhope Retail Merchants Associa-tion, the Fairhope Garden Club and the Eastern Shore Art Center.

New energy was in the air!In 1978, local artists, led by Mary Hunter, began

working on art for the 1979 Christmas season. Artists were again well along in painting many new works for outdoor display on the streets of Fairhope. But nature intervened on September 12, 1979 when Hurricane Fredrick devastated the public utilities in Fairhope, felling trees and damaging city equipment. Conse-quently, only eight wooden Christmas art pieces were completed and displayed by Christmas Day, due to priority being given to rebuilding the city infrastructure downtown. Lampposts were broken, public utilities were damaged, and city workers were not able to de-vote time to installing decorations. The beloved art had to wait.

On August 28, 1980, the Mobile Press-Register news-paper carried a feature article with the photograph of Mrs. Hunter with wooden paintings, including a series depicting the Twelve Days of Christmas “that will

adorn city streets in downtown Fairhope during the yuletide season.”

Supported by an exhilarating community spirit, the city Public Works crews installed forty-one Christmas painted wooden placards downtown. Mrs. Hunter was assisted in the project by approximately sixteen art-ists. They finished twenty-nine 8-foot wooden dis-plays, plus twelve 2-foot by 4-foot paintings entitled The Twelve Days of Christmas. Mrs. Hunter painted the Twelve Days and four more of the 8-foot wooden Christmas decorations, demonstrating her dedication to the city art. Her work was displayed each Christmas from 1980 to 2001. Special affection was expressed for the Twelve Days of Christmas — all twelve of them — were hung from 1980 until 2016.

In 2017, a municipal decision was made to change the city signage motif to banners. The Twelve Days art was retired to a city storage area. The next year, the Committee to Preserve Fairhope’s Christmas Art (CPFCA) was formed to work with public and artis-tic interests to preserve the City’s popular Christmas artwork. The Committee was comprised of several supporting organizations of the arts: Eastern Shore Art Center - Judy Oxford, Artists By the Bay - Ellen Majors Lacey and Vicky Cook, City of Fairhope - Paige Craw-ford, and the Fairhope Retail Merchant’s Association - Diane Douglas.

Later in 2018, the wooden Twelve Days of Christ-mas artwork panels were retrieved from storage and, although a bit tattered and worn, were set aside as a cherished piece of city history. But, they indeed, needed some love.

The CPFCA established a plan to refurbish these classics. It was obvious that funds and some imagina-tion would be needed to recondition and frame each of

the 2-ft X 4-ft pan-els. The Committee presented their plan to the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival Foundation (FACFF), patriarchs of the city’s artistic heritage. The FACFF com-mitted grant funds to recondition and preserve the artwork. Soon thereafter, the Friends of the Fairhope Museum of History agreed to business manage the project.

Together, the CP-FCA, Friends of the Museum of History and creative local artisans, began to repair and restore the work in December 2018.

On October 14, 2019, the refurbished Twelve Days of Christmas artwork was completed and placed in locations around downtown Fairhope. The reju-venated work was celebrated along with the One Hundred and Twenty-Fifth An-niversary of Fairhope in 2019!

The CPFCA will continue its mission to preserve historic Fairhope art. The Committee foresees a gallery of historic art, featuring the Twelve Days of Christmas and other nostalgic works that take creative minds back to the days of old Fairhope with a vision for the future. After all, this city was designed to be Utopia!

The Committee for the Preservation of Fairhope Christmas Art can be proud of its achievement to pro-tect and preserve our proud heritage in creative art!

At the Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival Entertainment Venue, festival-goers will enjoy some of the best local and regional talent this area has to offer. Located next to the down-town Regions Bank at the intersection of Section Street and Magnolia Avenue (between the north entrance of the Eastern Shore Art Center’s outdoor arts show and the south entrance of the Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival). Ivey L. March is a met-alsmith and teaching artist based in St. Louis, Missouri. Her business Jewelry de Terre is rustic jewelry inspired by nature and often uses found objects within metalwork. de terre means “of the earth” which reflects the inspiration that nature plays in all of the jewelry designs, and the eco friendly materials. Ivey studied Art and Design at both Murray State University where she received her Bachelor of Arts, as well as the Marchutz School of Fine Art in Aix-en-Provence, France. In 2018 she was chosen as a Fellow for the Community Arts Training program with the Regional Art Com-mission in St. Louis, Missouri. In addition to her own artistic work, Ivey teaches with the Center of Creative Arts, where she partners with public schools to create and teach individualized arts integration residencies, sharing her love of the arts with young people.

Ronda GoochRonda Gooch is the owner of

Gooch Gallery, a self-guided gal-lery representing award winning artists located inside the Sonesta Resort Hilton Head Island. She is a Fairhope native and graduate of Fairhope High School. She cred-its the influence of the Eastern Shore art community for inspir-ing her love of art.

Her career spanned from humanitarian work in Mogadishu, Somalia to managing a Southeastern ter-ritory for the American Red Cross. But, it was during her time coordinating events inside resort hotels that inspired her to create a unique gallery concept to show-case artwork beyond the walls of a traditional gallery. Since its inception, art has been on display for guests of all ages to enjoy, and purchased pieces have been shipped throughout the country and internationally. Her business has expanded with art expos throughout the United States which match venues with specific art styles. Ronda resides in Charlotte, NC with her husband and two Boston Terriers, and has two grown children and two step-children.

Dale LewisDale Lewis is a sculptor work-

ing primarily in wood. He received a BFA at the Uni-

versity of Alabama in Commer-cial Design, with concentrations in painting and ceramics. After a 13-year career in television production, he discovered wood as his medium of choice and has created whimsical pieces for 40 years. His work is included in 8 museum permanent collections and numerous private collec-tions and has been represented in 50 exhibitions. He has received the Alabama Craft Fellowship 2 times and recently was included in Alabama Creates: 200 Years of Arts & Artists, a publication that highlights notable art-ists from the past 200 years. Residing in Oneonta, AL, with his wife Carol, he continues to create his works.

A panel of three very talented and highly respected judges were chosen to select the best works in the 68th Annual Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival. The Annual Arts and Crafts Festival in Fairhope is the biggest event in Fairhope each year by all met-rics — size, revenue and attendance. And within that show, the feature artist and selection of the artwork to publicize the annual event, are as popular as the rings at a wedding. This year, that decision by the Arts and Crafts Festival Committee is especially exciting because a local artist has become the recipient.

Mrs. Allison Norris Ashurst is the 2020 Festival selected artist. She enjoys her multi-faceted career as artist, mother and businesswoman in Fairhope. In 2006, she opened an art gallery for a year in Fairhope, and participated in the Fairhope art community. She also taught art for several years at Faulkner Commu-nity College. She then adjusted her priorities to dem-onstrate her talent as a working mom, continuing to accept art commissions, and donating her art to many local organizations and fundraising efforts. Today, she balances her time between family, art and marketing activities in her family business.

In her painting for the Festival, she has created an image of the Fairhope Floral Clock. Floral displays have not been featured as the Festival selection for many years. To locals, this botanical color reminds us of the municipal decision years ago that helped trans-form Fairhope from a small town into a growing city. For tourists and guests, the colors represent the beauty and imagination that personifies Fairhope.

Mrs. Ashurst works with a variety of mediums, but her favorite expressions are in oil and acrylic due to their depth and richness. She finds inspiration in nature so she can transport the vivid colors, textures and emotions onto a canvas with many layers of paint. However, her work is often more traditional when the

focus is portraiture of children and animals or archi-tecture. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Birmingham Southern College and a Masters of Art Education from the University of Alabama in Birming-ham. She currently lives and works in Fairhope.

Allison is involved in the Exceptional Foundation of the Gulf Coast (EFGC) and has collaborated with some participants in that organization by encourag-ing them and their art. The EFGC is a nonprofit entity chartered to meet the social and recreational needs of the special-needs community in Mobile and Baldwin Counties. “I’m excited,” she says, “to promote the Ex-ceptional Foundation, as the mom of a special needs child and through my art. I hope to share my booth in the Festival with some works of these outstanding individuals.” The EFGC is another creative art source that is supported by the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Fes-tival Foundation.

The floral clock certainly highlights the values we find on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay. The six-tythree foot by forty-two foot colorful working time-piece welcomes guests as they arrive on the north side of our city. The clock was designed by Paul Fontenot of Garden Design Solutions, Inc. (GDSI) and was funded partially by the Committee on Public Art of the Eastern Shore Art Center. The clock is a unique and functional part of everyone’s Fairhope.

The Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival Foundation supports the Student Art Mural Contest along with Segers, Inc., Jubilee Ace Hardware, and Fairhope, Daphne and Spanish Fort Public Libraries. There are eight Eastern Shore secondary schools that will partici-pate in the annual art contest showcased at the visiting artist’s dinner. Attendees of the artists’ annual dinner vote on the student art created from the festival’s theme which will hang in the respective public library for that city all year.
