June 28, 2020 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time CHRISTIAN HOSPITALITY Day in and day out, we are required to make judgment calls in-formed by tough, durable, serviceable Christian love. We do what we can do, and God takes notice. God is in charge of rewards, and a glass of water will do when that is what we have to offer with a glad and open heart. Paul gives us a clear theology for the missionary work we do whenever anybody is close at hand. He reminds us that our work, our ministry, is carried on in concert with Christ. We have been baptized into his death and life. In any given moment both life and death are there, a kind of play of shadow and light. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell where shadow leaves off and light begins. God will take care of that, too. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Elisha promises a baby son to the hospitable woman (2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16a). Psalm — For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 89). Second Reading — We shall live in newness of life as Christ was raised from the dead (Romans 6:3-4, 8-11). Gospel — Whoever gives but a cup of cold water to another will sure-ly be rewarded (Matthew 10:37-42). June 28, 2020 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

From Pastors Desk

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Many people have been asking me what’s going on in the parish. For the most part the question is based on the Covid-19 pandemic and the slow opening of different places. As far as the Covid restrictions, this week-end we are allowed to increase Mass attendance from 25% to 33%, and we have been able to have a couple of funerals. Because of the necessity of social distancing and need to wipe down pews and other surfaces after Mass, we will stay with the current schedule of 5pm on Saturday, 9am on Sunday and 11am on Sunday in Spanish. Our office is semi-open, and people are asked to call ahead to see if anybody is available to assist them. On the non-Covid dominated front, we are doing our best to use the time we have been given to set up for when life returns to the best semblance of normal it can be. Since we have been requested to distance ourselves from one another, we are holding weekday Masses at 8am in the church, which has allowed me to continue the work on the chapel. What am I doing in the chapel you may ask, glad you did. In the Spring of last year, we had the roof of the parish center replaced, and now that we have a roof that does not leak, it made sense to make repairs. As I have mentioned the Knights of Columbus have replaced the ceiling tiles in the classrooms and hallway, as well as the office, because of the lockdown they had to hold off replacing the tiles in the foyer. My own project began with repairing the water damage to the chapel ceiling, which was done, and then I began to repair the walls, but before I put up new molding, I thought it would be good to set up a couple of matching shrines for Mary and Joseph. Since I am hoping that weekday Masses can return to the chapel by August, that is the completion date I have for this project. Of course, other work has to go on, and while I was working on the chapel, I came in one day to hear the sound of a waterfall in the auditorium, and since we don’t have a waterfall (we’re installing one next year) I knew there was more work for me. Hot water heater failed and flooded the kitchen, storage room and into the auditorium. Eventually, we will have all three buildings fully repaired and looking great, because this place is dedicated to Our Lady, because it is the heart of the local community, and because all of us deserve to worship, learn and socialize in a nice place. All of our work is not just on the physical plant, as we prepare for the upcoming Religious Education year, not really knowing what this Fall will look like. If there is a second wave of Covid this Fall, and we find ourselves restricted to homes again, we want to make sure that the children receive the best catechism they can get, outside of being with each other and their teachers. Personally, I’m looking forward to having my class back again this Fall.

On a related note, Mrs. Madlyn D’Ambrose, our current Director of Religious Education is retiring, however, she has promised that she will not abandon me completely. I have been receiving resumes from various people, however, due to the Covid situation, I have not been able to interview candidates. Pray that the person I eventually hire for the position is someone available for the long hours that are required, as well as someone who is not overly concerned about the salary we can afford to give them. Let’s especially pray for Mrs. D’Ambrose, who has dedicated so many years to the children and youth of the parish, and even though she will be around to help and be a part of our community, some of her time is going to be dedicated to her four month old grandson. Pax, Fr. Henry

During this time when we are at home, far more than then ever before, we ask you to join us starting this evening for many opportunities to take a retreat at no fees for anything we put on our Facebook

Diocese of Rockville Centre announces Morning Star Initiative

As you may have heard, the Diocese of Rockville Centre has decided to launch a bold plan, called the Morn-ing Star Initiative, to revitalize Catholic elementary school education on Long Island. The goal of this initia-tive is to restore a robust Catholic culture to the DRVC schools, improve academics, and create a more fis-cally sustainable model for schools. The Diocese will partner with the Marianists, who have two centuries of Catholic educational commitment and expertise. The Diocese has asked Brother Thomas Cleary, S.M., Presi-dent of Chaminade High School, to serve as the Chief Revitalization Officer and to spearhead this effort. He will be assisted by his fellow Marianists, who will seek feedback and ideas from the full spectrum of those with a stake in a revitalized Catholic elementary education, including our parishioners. We value your input, so please share your thoughts. Please visit the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s website at Morningstarinitia-tive.org .

Pope Francis appeals for Laudato si’ Year, releases special prayer Pope Francis urges everyone to take part in the just-opened Laudato si’ Year, and releases a special prayer to accompany the celebration.

By Devin Watkins

After praying the Regina Coeli on Sunday, Pope Francis recalled the 5th anniversary of his encyclical

“Laudato si’: On the Care for our Common Home.”

He said the document sought to “call attention to the cry of the Earth and of the poor.”

The Pope invited everyone to take part in the Laudato si’ Year, which is promoted by the Dicastery for

Promoting Integral Human Development and runs from 24 May 2020 until 24 May 2021.

“I invite all people of goodwill to take part, to care for our common home and our most vulnerable brothers

and sisters.” Special Week and Anniversary Year to mark 5 years of “Laudato Si"

Laudato si’: An Encyclical to help us look to the post-pandemic future

Special prayer Pope Francis also announced a special prayer dedicated to the Laudato si’ Year.

He encouraged everyone to pray it. Loving God, Creator of Heaven, Earth, and all therein contained. Open our minds and touch our hearts, so that we can be part of Creation, your gift. Be present to those in need in these difficult times, especially the poorest and most vulnerable. Help us to show creative solidarity as we confront the consequences of the global pandemic. Make us courageous in embracing the changes required to seek the common good. Now more than ever, may we all feel interconnected and interdependent. Enable us to succeed in listening and responding to the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor. May their current sufferings become the birth-pangs of a more fraternal and sustainable world. We pray through Christ our Lord, under the loving gaze of Mary Help of Christians, Amen.
