May 31, 2020-- Pentecost Sunday THE RICHNESS OF THE SPIRIT Students, and most adults recalling their school days, are familiar with the phrase “compare and contrast” that shows up from time to time on tests. Today we hear two different accounts of the giving of the Holy Spirit to the church. Let’s contrast, then compare. Luke’s account from Acts is filled with arresting details: the mighty wind from heaven, the tongues of flame, the miracle of different languages. John’s account seems timid: fearful disciples, the wounded Christ, the expelling of breath from his risen body, not from the sky. Our literal, modern minds wonder which way it happened; our noisy culture probably makes us prefer the former. But if we compare the two, we find that the dazzling richness of the Spirit fills both accounts, for it is the very breath of the risen Christ, ascended to the sky in Luke, that appears to his disciples in John and sends his followers forth to carry on his mission of forgiv-ing sin and proclaiming the mighty acts of God. Pentecost Sunday of Easter

From Pastors Desk

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Right now, I am going a little nuts because of the different directions we are receiving from the governor’s office about reopening and trying to plan for Masses along the lines laid out by the diocesan offices. This weekend we will have the first public celebration of the Mass in our parish since before St. Patrick’s Day. As many of you are aware, I did attempt to livestream during the early part of the lockdown; unfortunately I am not the greatest when it comes to technology, and I was also informed by a friend that our internet connection is not up to the task, even though it is a commercial account. Something else we have to work on as things return to a semblance of normalcy. We are still a ways off from returning to Church as normal, and at this point we are planning for parking lot Masses, on a reduced schedule. When we do return to indoor Masses, the weekday will also be held in the church to allow for social distancing. A number of people have been reaching out to me, telling me about various liturgical celebrations at other churches over the past number of weeks, being held clandestinely. Some even suggesting that it could be done here. There are several reasons why I would not do that: 1) I have been instructed by those in authority over me, in the Church, that we were not to do that. If I disobeyed in that respect, when I made a promise of obedience, what would my word mean, and what example would that give? 2) There are legitimate health concerns surrounding large gatherings, and until we could hold Mass without undie risk to parishioners, that is my obligation as the pastor. 3) No matter what people may think, or what direction the government is heading in, we do not yet live in a police state where free practice of the faith has been suppressed. In Belfast, I took legitimate risks to my life and health walking to the local Catholic Church (and no it was not the same going to a Protestant one), and living in the neighborhood I did, which was majority Catholic, I became ac-customed to having British troops or police aiming their rifles at me from the backs of armored cars. So no, we are not yet in an anti-Catholic police state, and priests do not have to do underground Masses yet. A few people have mentioned the distribution of various items, whether it was prayer cards or something else during drive-by blessings. Someone even mentioned the distribution of communion in individual plastic containers, which I have seen in catalogues, but will not be using. Why? Because these are made for various Protestant denominations, which view communion as merely symbolic, rather than the Divine Reality of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of the Altar. It is fine for those who do not have the fullness of the Faith to have little snack packs for congregants, however the idea of Consecrating bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ in something resembling an Oscar Meyer lunchable is offensive. They can keep their Protestant symbolism, I’ll keep the Reality entrusted to the Church for over 2000 years. continued

I would like to have my loved one remembered in memoriam for one year with a memorial candle in the church vestibule in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. $200.00 year begins First Sunday of Advent and Ends on Christ the King Sunday . It will of course be a while before we can distribute Holy Communion to the Faithful, and I know that caus-es grief and anxiety for many. Please understand that we will make it available as soon as we are able, in the meantime please join in spiritual Communion. After the Masses, I will be giving Benediction with the Eucharist in the monstrance, and we all benefit from the grace bestowed by the Sacrament this way. Continue to pray for me, as I pray for all of you. Pray for our brothers and sisters who have died during this time, who suffer from sickness, and those who suffer because of the sickness or loss of loved ones. Pray for an end to this pandemic, because regardless of what any politician says, it will be God who delivers us from it. Pax, Fr. Henry

Thank you to the people who came to clean up and take care of their little parcel of our parish last week. Please if you volunteered to work on an area now would be the best time to start as there will not be anyone in your way.

May 27, 2020 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, We are currently making preparations for the celebration of Sunday Masses in the parish parking lot. The recent announcement by the New York Governors office, that religious celebrations could be held in a Drive-In style, has given us the opportunity to come together to worship, although greatly different from how we are accustomed. We will be celebrating the Sacrament of the Mass in the park-ing lot beginning May 30th & 31st. With that being said, there are certain things that go along with this: 1) We will only be celebrating three (3) Masses on the weekend: 5pm on Saturday, 9am on Sunday, and 11am in Spanish. This is not a permanent change to the Mass schedule, but only to allow for the proper and safe flow of traffic. 2) No Communion will be distributed. This is a directive from the Diocese, and for the health and safety of everybody we cannot and will not go against it. At the end of each Mass, we will give a Eucharistic Benediction to everyone in attendance. Also, the sign of peace is not exchanged. 3) Everyone should remain in their cars, for those without vehicles please observe proper social distancing. This is a mandate from New York State. We are working on getting equipment that will allow the Mass to be broadcast to the cars FM radios. If we do not have it by the time we begin these Masses, we will have speakers set up, though these may be difficult to hear. 4) There is still a dispensation in effect, releasing everyone from their obligation to attend Sunday Mass during this time, and those who are sick or vulnerable should remain at home. 5) Now more than ever, exercise caution when entering, exiting and while in the parking lot. Because of continued restrictions on size of gatherings, we are reviewing our ability to celebrate daily Mass schedule. These may occur outdoors, based on the weather. I am attempting to see how I can hear confessions, based upon the protocol laid out by the Diocese. More on this as it progresses. Through prayer and common sense, we should be able to return to some semblance of normalcy before long. In the meantime we will do what we can with what we are handed. In Christ,

Pope Francis appeals for Laudato si’ Year, releases special prayer Pope Francis urges everyone to take part in the just-opened Laudato si’ Year, and releases a special prayer to accompany the celebration. By Devin Watkins

After praying the Regina Coeli on Sunday, Pope Francis recalled the 5th anniversary of his encyclical

“Laudato si’: On the Care for our Common Home.”

He said the document sought to “call attention to the cry of the Earth and of the poor.”

The Pope invited everyone to take part in the Laudato si’ Year, which is promoted by the Dicastery for Pro-

moting Integral Human Development and runs from 24 May 2020 until 24 May 2021.

Laudato si’: An Encyclical to help us look to the post-pandemic future

Special prayer Pope Francis also announced a special prayer dedicated to the Laudato si’ Year.

He encouraged everyone to pray it. Loving God, Creator of Heaven, Earth, and all therein contained. Open our minds and touch our hearts, so that we can be part of Creation, your gift. Be present to those in need in these difficult times, especially the poorest and most vulnerable. Help us to show creative solidarity as we confront the consequences of the global pandemic. Make us courageous in embracing the changes required to seek the common good. Now more than ever, may we all feel interconnected and interdependent. Enable us to succeed in listening and responding to the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor. May their current sufferings become the birth-pangs of a more fraternal and sustainable world. We pray through Christ our Lord, under the loving gaze of Mary Help of Christians, Amen.

Diocese of Rockville Centre announces Morning Star Initiative

As you may have heard, the Diocese of Rockville Centre has decided to launch a bold plan, called the Morning Star Initiative, to revitalize Catho-lic elementary school education on Long Island. The goal of this initiative is to restore a robust Catholic culture to the DRVC schools, improve academics, and create a more fiscally sustainable model for schools. The Diocese will partner with the Marianists, who have two centuries of Catholic educational commitment and expertise. The Diocese has asked Brother Thomas Cleary, S.M., President of Chaminade High School, to serve as the Chief Revitalization Officer and to spearhead this effort. He will be assisted by his fellow Marianists, who will seek feedback and ideas from the full spectrum of those with a stake in a revitalized Catholic elementary education, including our parishioners. We value your input,

so please share your thoughts. Please visit the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s website at Morningstarinitiative.org .
