COMMANDER’S MESSAGE
March 15 will be the 99th birthday of The American Legion. April 10 will be the 99th birthday of The
American Legion Auxiliary. Happy Birthday, everyone. Our Post was the sixth Post to be chartered in the
state of Arizona. We will have had 99 years of serving the Prescott community and its veterans. What can
we do to continue that heritage?
There will be a Veterans Resources Meeting at the Post on 19 March, with the Mayor. The American
Legion National Commander will be visiting Post 6 on 29 March, along with delegations from
Department and District. We will be canceling Queen of Hearts for that night.
The Missing In America Project finds unclaimed cremains of veterans and transports them to a National
Cemetery for military honors and inurnment. A PGR escort from Kingman to Prescott National Cemetery
will take place on 6 April. Last year, the streets of Chino Valley were lined with people as the escort
passed through, and it snowed on us at the Cemetery.
Lt. Heather Lucky Penney, USAF, an F-16 pilot that scrambled on September 11, 2001, to intercept
United Airlines Flight 93, stated:
“There are things in this world that are more important than ourselves. Freedom. The Constitution of the
United States…. Our way of life. Mom, baseball, apple pie; these things and so many more that make us
uniquely American. We belong to something greater than ourselves. As complex and diverse and
discordant as it is, this thing, this idea called America, binds us together in citizenship and community and
brotherhood.”

MESSAGE FROM UNIT 6 PRESIDENT
Greetings to all: I believe last newsletter I said 2018 was going to be a better year than 2017, well I don’t
know about that maybe it’s true for some but--. I have heard that so many of our members have been ill
(Cont’d) 1
with the flu, cold, pneumonia or whatever else illness there may be. I hope we are all on the mend now.
We find it necessary to cancel our March First Friday Dinner. We apologize for having to cancel so many
of our events, several of our members have been ill. It has been a challenge to try to plan an event.
I heard that the Past President Parley luncheon meeting held February 16th was very good. This was
headed up by Irene Mullins and Jo Schreiber. Good job ladies.
Up Coming Events: Auxiliary Meeting March 12th, Board meeting starts at 10 a.m., Auxiliary meets at 10:30am.
- At our March 12th meeting we will be asking for volunteers to serve on the nomination committee.
- It won’t be long for election of officers ladies!
- Hopefully, we will have our Taco Tuesday March 20th , Irene will need a helper.
- April 6th our First Friday dinner
- Auxiliary meeting April 9th, Board meet at 10 am & Aux. meet at 10:30am.
- April 20th Setup for the Rummage & Bake sale starts 1pm until finished
- April 21st it is time for our Annual Rummage Sale & Bake Sale (starts at 8 – 12)
So ladies gather all items you don’t want or need, clothes you don’t want to wear anymore, save them for
the rummage sale. Start thinking about what you want to bake for the sale. I can almost smell the
wonderful bake goods, cakes, cookies, brownies, even pies. The proceeds go to help our veterans.
Let’s all get well soon and say a little prayer for those who are still ill.
Remember our Veterans who have served this Country and who have served us, so we could have this
freedom. Thank You and God Bless.
Sharon Keene-Wright

ADJUTANT’S NOTES
Membership: We are very close to 90% on the 2018 renewals. If you haven’t renewed yet, the time is
now. Only with your help can we make 100%, which is my goal. I have started making phone calls, for
those of you who have provided a phone number. For the rest, you may just get a knock on your door!
Yes, I’m that determined. Your renewal does matter…to everyone! We can do this! I am also on the
Nominations Committee for your 2018-2019 officers. We will be having nominations soon. Are you
interested in running for an officer position? We have many to choose from. This is a great way for you to
get involved with your Post and learn about the many programs we participate in. Also, please do attend
the Post General Meetings, the 2nd Thursday of the month at 1800 hrs. You can learn more about what our
officers do, as well as be informed about current and future Post activities. Hope to see you at our next

SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION
SAL membership update; The SAL currently has 90 members for 2018 which is 95% of our 2017 total. If
you know someone who might be interested in becoming a member, send them our way. We sure would
like to hit 100%. As always, we are still in need of volunteers to assist with our breakfasts and dinners. If
you can help let us know. As a reminder, the Post conducts elections for Officers in May. The SAL will
have an election at the same time if we have interested candidates. Currently we have just 2 officers and
can add 2 more officers as volunteers. Again, if you are interested and available, we could use your help.
We want to thank all the Post members and their guests for supporting our breakfast and our Burger
Night. You can enjoy a delicious breakfast almost every Sunday provided by one of the Post groups and
several dinners are also offered each month, all at an exceptional value! So please continue to support
your Post.
Thank you and see you at the Post
Alan Blaine
Squadron 6 Commander
Since our last column, Riders from ALR 6 participated in numerous PGR Missions, attended the
Department Open House in Phoenix, attended the AZALR Quarterly meeting in Apache Junction,
attended the District 8 Legion Quarterly meeting in Black Canyon City, and rode to Payson, Peoria and
Wickenburg to try to bring the Traveling Trophy back to the Post (unsuccessfully). We also had
resignations from office and elections. Chuck Tutone, our Director, moved to Missouri. Although he still
a member of ALR 6, he had to resign as Director; Mike Ammons moved up to the Director’s position and
is doing a great job. Sherm Scott got elected to replace Mike as Assistant Director. And Clif Mitchell, a
new member of the Post and ALR 6, was elected to fill a vacancy in the Chaplain’s position. We also
added three more new members – Suzanne Ammons, Bob Meadowcroft and Sandy Meadowcroft. {Bob
and Sandy, both retired Navy veterans, also are new members to the Post – welcome!}. So your ALR
Chapter is not only doing a bunch of great things for our veterans, but is also bringing in new Legion
members to the Post.
UPCOMING ALR EVENTS –
MARCH 1 - our next ALR meeting at 1830 hours. MARCH 16-18 we’ll be taking a three-day ride to
(Cont’d) 3
Tombstone. MARCH 31 – the annual Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Celebration, hosted by ALR 93
in Camp Verde. APRIL 1 – another great ALR breakfast from 9-11 AM; APRIL 5 - our April ALR
meeting at 1830 hours. APRIL 6 - ALR 6 riders, in conjunction with the PGR and MIAP (Missing in
American Project) will be escorting the cremains of a number of unclaimed veterans from Kingman to the
Prescott national Cemetery for Military Honors at PNC at 1300 hours. APRIL 14 – the statewide AZALR
meeting will be held at ALR 36 in Tucson. APRIL 29 – our second ALR breakfast of the month at the
Post from 9-11 AM.
WIN SOME EASY MONEY – during the month, ALR 6 sells numbered “squares” at $1 per square for a
50/50 drawing. A maximum of 100 are sold – so you could win up to $50. Squares can be purchased from
our friendly bartenders; the drawing is held shortly before the ALR meeting on the second Thursday of
the month. THIS IS OPEN TO ALL LEGION FAMILY MEMBERS.
And, as always, thanks to all of our Legion family who participate or support some of our ALR
activities and events
For God and Country,
John Moffitt, ALR 6 Secretary
CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE Fifty years ago I knew a guy who met someone Who was the most important Person ever in his life and, by his own admission, this guy was too ignorant and/or religious to comprehend the importance of the encounter,............until he heard the Truth for the first time at the age of 33.

FROM the BAR MANAGER
Hi all, hope everyone is feeling better due to the Flu that's been going around! As of this writing it’s been
very cold, and we could sure use a little moisture!!! Anyway, I cannot believe March is upon us
already!!!! Which means St. Patrick’s Day is coming up, which means drink specials & the luck of the
Irish. Then obviously April is right around the corner which Easter & April Fool’s day are on the same
day, (Rather odd if you ask me) Then we have tax day !!!!!!! Some Heavy Drinking that day for sure!!!!!!
( Ha,Ha,Ha)
Now as I made a few observations at the Bar recently, these are a few things I heard from fellow patrons
from our own Post 6 !!!!! (Nothing Negative) All I can say is unbelievable! And in defense of those
that made these comments, yes, there was Alcohol involved.
1) Do you have a Band-Aid? I just scraped my knee falling for you."
2) I must be hunting treasure because I'm digging your chest.
And finally, this one, It’s cheesy but this takes the cake!!!!!!!! (In my eyes)
3) What did the horse say when he fell? Help, I’ve fallen and I can’t Giddy up!!!!!

chairs and poles.”. Skip Waller

HONOR / COLOR GUARD
Your Honor Guard provided Military Honors for 43 departed brothers during the months of January and
February. Our dedicated team gave just short of 800 hours of their personal time to attend these
ceremonies to show our respect for our veterans.
As I promised in the previous newsletter, here are the stats on what your Honor Guard did during 2017:
Of the 307 memorial services or funerals we did, 60 were consolidated group Honors. With one group
service per month, that means that we had 260 separate services for the year. Color Guard events; parades,
presenting Colors, visiting schools, visiting seniors at their residence and various other special events
totaled 43.
Of the 307 total Vets honored during the year; 67 were WWII Vets, 84 - Korea, 113 Vietnam, 9 -Persian
Gulf and 34 who served but not in a time of war. Breaking these down to service branch represented;
Army – 122, Navy – 87, Air Force – 57, Marine – 35, Coast Guard – 6. There were four woman Vets this
year.
The squad donated $3,434.00 to various charities, community groups and Post 6 over the course of the
year. Our van traveled some 2,736 miles transporting us to the 350 separate events. That equates to about
$650.00 in fuel cost. There are 15 members on the squad who gave up a collective 6,200 hours of their
personal time to make sure that these Vets get their due. That’s 2 ½ months of a 40-hour work week per
person. Do you give up that much of your time for someone else?
Keep the women and men of Post 6 Honor/Color Guard in your prayers and give them a nod and a
“Thank you!” for their commitment to the duty they perform. Not everyone can do this job!
