WELCOME TO ST. JUDE www.stjudeparish.com facebook.com/stjudeallen

A Pilgrimage through the Holy Land of Israel

By the Grace of God, with the support of our Pastor Fr. Andrew, and with the prayers of our St. Jude parish, with the companionship of thirty-one parishioners and friends, I recently (November 11-20,2019) ventured on a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land, journeying through the regions

where Jesus lived his ministry and ultimately died for our salvation. This experience of walking where Jesus walked, exploring the historical excavations as well as the sacred sites of his life and the contemporary communities around them, provided us with fertile ground for personal contemplation and renewal of our faith.

In general, a pilgrimage is a meaningful journey to a sacred place, a time of simply ‘being’ rather than always ‘doing’. For Christians, the reasons for going on a pilgrimage are varied - to set aside time for God, to draw closer to him, or to more clearly discern his will and guidance at times of transition or difficulty. The pilgrimage-centered journey gives us the chance to re-energize mentally, physically and spiritually. Christian pilgrims do not merely visit places as tourists, we come away inspired and changed, renewed in our lives and faith.

On this particular pilgrimage, organized mainly for our parishioners, using the professional services of NAWAS International Tour operating company, Della Doss took in charge of the contact person. We visited sacred sites and historical excavations throughout Israel, including stops in Haifa, Tiberias, Nazareth, Bethlehem, and Jerusalem. I cannot begin to adequately share the breadth of emotions experienced by all of us during our visits to numerous sacred and historical sites. Whether it was the site of the Transfiguration on Mt. Tabor, the grotto where Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus prayed, or the Stone of the Unction in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the places we visited touched each one of us differently, personally tied to our individual walk of faith. Highlights for many of us included:

A visit to the cave revered as Jesus’ birthplace, Bethlehem, and the Church of the Nativity constructed over the grotto; (Matt. 1: 18-25)

The place where Jesus lived with his parents in his boyhood days at Nazareth, and Carpenter workshop of Joseph. (Matthew 2:23)

Church of visitation in a hilly area of Judah where Mary, pregnant with Jesus and Elizabeth, pregnant with John the Baptist met each other.

In light of the continued rise in the number of flu cases and concerns about the coronavirus (COVID-19), the Diocese of Dallas is taking the following precautions.

Please stay home if you are sick or are experiencing symptoms. If you are ill, you are not bound by the obligation to attend Mass, including on Sunday. Out of charity to others, sick individuals should not attend Mass or other liturgical events.

Distribution of the Precious Blood from the chalice is suspended until further notice.

The Sign of Peace is temporarily suspended. After the Our Father and Prayer of Peace by the priest, the Lamb of God will follow immediately.

We do not encourage the holding of hands during Mass.

If applicable, please strongly consider receiving Communion in your hand rather than on the tongue.

The Diocese continues to be in touch with state and local health authorities and will alter these directives as needed. Please let us continue to pray for all who are sick and affected by this virus.

The excursion to Capernaum, the center of Jesus’ ministry in the Galilee, and the synagogue built on the site where Jesus taught; (Matt.4:13, 23)

Renewal of our baptismal vows on the Jordan River;

Mass and blessings of marriages in the Franciscan Wedding Chapel in Cana, near the site of Jesus’ first miracle;

Time in the Church of the Fish and the Loaves at Tabgha, the traditional site of the feeding of the 5,000; (Luke 9:10).

Wandering through The Mount of Beatitudes to contemplate Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount;” (Matt. 5-7).

A view of the Pool of Bethesda where Jesus performed the Sabbath miracle; (John 5: 1-31)

Meditating on the events of the Last Supper during a visit to the traditional location of the Upper Room; (Mark 14:12),

Strolling around the perimeter of the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus prayed the night before his crucifixion; (Matt. 26: 36 - 44)

Walking the Via Dolorosa and praying the Stations of the Cross at sites near and within The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, following the route known in tradition to have been the path Jesus carried his wooden cross to his crucifixion and death;

Meditating in The Chapel of the Primacy, where Peter professed his devotion three times to the risen Christ; (John 21)

Praying on The Mount of Olives, where Jesus ascended into heaven; (Acts 1: 9-12) and

Embracing the levity of our newfound fellowship, as we covered ourselves with medicinal mud from the banks of the Dead Sea and floated in its dense salt waters.

As a priest and spiritual leader of this Pilgrimage, I experienced many deep, faith-filled moments individually and in community with my fellow pilgrims. Discovering and reflecting upon the words of the Lord’s Prayer written in my native language, Malayalam, at the Pater Noster Shrine near the Mount of Olives ignited memories of my journey to the priesthood, which began more than twenty-five years ago in Kerala, India. Praying with our community at the banks of the Jordan River and leading each person through the renewal of their baptismal vows strengthened my core as a servant of Christ. Celebrating Mass for our community at an outdoor altar near the shore of the Sea of Galilee deeply touched my heart as this celebration felt so close to how Jesus ministered to the people of his historical life, teaching at every opportunity, at any location available, wherever his ministry took him. Finally, visiting the tomb of Christ at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher - after helping a young archeology student on a personal pilgrimage through Jerusalem renew his baptismal vows - indescribably affected my soul and affirmed my faith.

With immense joy to everyone who inspired, supported, accompanied, guided, and prayed I do thank all from the bottom of my heart. For those who not yet made this pilgrimage I would strongly recommend to make it at least once in your lifetime. It will be an enriching spiritual nourishment in our religious faith and belief.

With Blessings of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Fr. Abraham Thomas

As we move into the final phase of our

expansion project, we wanted to let

you know that the project is coming in

well under budget! This is a huge accomplishment, and is a function

of a project management team that was very focused and disciplined

to ensure your contributions were applied in the most prudent and

cost effective manner! As a result, we have been able to include

several additional upgrades that were very much needed. For

example, the south entry to the activities center was updated and

doors were replaced, the exterior wooden doors of the church will be

refinished this spring, and we are working on signage for better

identification of the facilities and traffic flow.

Your generous financial participation has allowed us to essentially

complete this project while borrowing less than anticipated! Please

continue your support of the campaign fund as we look to the

future. You can donate on-line or pick up an envelope in the narthex.

Thank you for your generosity and support!!

UPCOMING / on-going

We have a long overdue need for new hymnals at our Church that will include the recent updates in some of the Mass prayers and easier access to the most common songs sung during the Mass. The new hymnals will also result in efficiencies as we limit the need for in-house printed worship aids to special occasion liturgies only.

Be part of this new project while honoring a loved one. Donate a hymnal to help defray the cost to our parish and in appreciation, we will print a bookplate on the inside cover with your dedication.

Each hymnal book is $25. All donations are tax deductible. Envelopes for your donation are in the pews and narthex. Please go to the website to view sample bookplates. Envelopes must be returned to the Business Office or the Mass donation basket by April 10. For any questions, please contact Mary Boyle at ext. 2213 or [email protected]. Thank you very much for your generosity.
