March 11, 2014 3600 join fun walk for International Women’s Day in Catbalogan

Some 600 participants were roused as early as 4:00 AM to the Fun Walk

organized by the Catbalogan City government to mark the International Women’s Day on Saturday. The crowd composed of LGU employees, members of the national government agencies, NGOs, academe and civic oriented groups gamely danced the zumba for their stretching activity. After which, the participants in their commemorative white t-shirts rounded the city streets for the early morning walk. “This activity is a fellowship to signify our willingness to come together in treating various issues, women’s issues among them,” Catbalogan City Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan addressed the crowd gathered at the city square. “It may be a long and tough journey ahead, but with everybody

taking part, milestones can be reached little by little, step by step,” she added in her welcome speech. After rounding up some three kilometers, participants which included men in uniform from the army, police and fire departments, they obliged to do a woman form to show that upholding women’s rights is an important factor in achieving gender equality which women advocates say is important in aspiring for a peaceful and just society. After reciting the “Women’s Creed”, the crowd also sang “I’m Every Woman”. The fun walk was just one of the numerous activities being done for the whole month of March as Samar hails every woman as Juana, the resilient woman who is able to recover from the devastation caused by natural calamities.
