Examination of Conscience with the Ten Commandments

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Most of us learned the Ten Commandments when we were children in catechism class (or CCD, or CCE, or Faith Formation, or whatever they called it). We had to memorize all ten of them before going to First Confession and First Communion. It was good that we learned them as children, but if we have forgotten them, it is important that we re-memorize them. Why? Because they provide a basic guide for us in our examination of conscience — especially in preparation for confession. Interestingly, although the Ten Commandments are Judeo-Christian, they are generally accepted and taught by most world reli-gions. The fathers of moral theology explained that most of the Ten Commandments were simply posi-tive formulations of the natural law. The first three commandments deal with our relationship to God, the vertical dimension. The last seven deal with our relationship with our neighbor, the horizontal dimen-sion. Because the Cross of Christ is the perfect expression of love for God and neighbor, we know that a mere external observance is simply not enough. Our obedience to them requires a commitment of the heart, and this is not particular to Lent, but to everyday of our lives as Christians. The Ten Command-ments are meant to be a bare minimum of Christian ethics, so let us look at each commandment and re-flect on ways Christ calls us beyond the bare minimum:

1. Love God with your whole heart, mind and soul. Do I realize that I offend God when I routinely

neglect prayer in the morning and evening, and when I do not think about Him throughout the day? 2. Do not use the Lord’s name in vain. Do I realize that I offend my Lord, not only when I combine His

Holy Name with a curse word, but every time in frustration I curse another person created in His own image and likeness.

3. Keep holy the Sabbath. Have I missed Mass on a Sunday (without just cause) and still received Holy Communion? Do I treat Sunday as a day for family and prayer, or do I treat it like every other day?

4. Honor your mother and father. If I am still under my parents’ roof, do I constantly talk back and disre-spect my parents? If my parents are in a nursing home, do I regularly visit them? If I am a parent, do I respect my children? Do I ever vent my stress on my children?

5. You shall not kill. Aside from hurting others physically, have I hurt their reputation through slander or detraction?

6. You shall not commit adultery. Do I realize that intentionally thinking impure thoughts about someone is committing adultery in my heart? Have I committed impure acts with self or another

7. You shall not steal. Have I cheated on tests at school? Have I stolen hours or goods at work 8. You shall not lie. Have I routinely told “little white lies” or embellished stories or been untruthful in

anything? Have I failed to stand up for justice because of fear or weakness? 9. & 10. You shall not covet. Have I been jealous of others? Have I been sad at another’s good even though God has been good to me? Have I been envious of another’s husband, wife, car, house or any-thing? If we are having struggles in any of these areas, we need to confess them in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Jesus our Lord wants to enter our temple — the temple where the Holy Spirit should be dwelling — with the whipping cord of His grace, and drive out these sins which are corrupting the Fa-ther’s true purpose for our lives. This Lent, may “zeal for the Father’s house” consume us as it con-sumed Jesus (Jn 2:17), and may we look forward to His glorious resurrection.

Examinación de Conciencia con los Diez Mandamientos

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, Muchos de nosotros aprendimos los Diez Mandamientos cuando niños en la clase de catecismo. (Teníamos que memorizarlos antes de hacer la primera confesión y de recibir la Primera Comunión.) Que bueno que los aprendiéramos cuando niños, pero si los hemos olvidado, es importante volver a memorizar-los. ¿Por qué? Porque ellos nos ofrecen una guía básica para nuestro examen de conciencia — especial-mente en preparación para la confesión durante la Cuaresma. Es muy interesante, que los Diez Mandamien-tos (aunque Judeo-Cristianos) son generalmente aceptados y enseñados por la mayoría de las religiones del mundo. Los padres de teología moral explican que los Diez Mandamientos eran simplemente fórmulas positi-vas de la ley natural. Los tres primeros se refieren a nuestra relación con Dios, el aspecto vertical. Los últi-mos siete se refieren a nuestra relación con nuestro prójimo, el aspecto horizontal. Porque la Cruz de Cristo es la mas perfecta expresión de amor de Dios a su próximo, sabemos que una observancia meramente externa de ellos, no es suficiente. Obedecerlos requiere un compromiso de corazón, no solamente durante la Cuaresma sino todos los días de nuestra vida Cristiana. Los Diez Mandamientos deben ser el mínimo reque-rimiento de la ética Cristiana, de modo que démosle un vistazo a cada mandamiento y reflexionemos sobre la forma en que Cristo nos llama a cumplirlos más allá de ese mínimo absoluto: 1. Primer Mandamiento: Amarás a Dios sobre todas las cosas, con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma y con

toda tu mente. ¿Me doy cuenta de que ofendo profundamente a Dios cuando rutinariamente descuido mis oraciones de la mañana y de la noche?

2. Segundo Mandamiento: No harás mal uso de Su Santo Nombre. ¿Me doy cuenta de que ofendo a mi Señor – no solamente cuando combino Su Santo Nombre con una maldición – sino cada vez que maldigo por frustración o maldigo a otra persona creada en Su propia imagen y semejanza?

3. Tercer Mandamiento: Acuérdate de santificar el Sábado. ¿He faltado a Misa el domingo (sin justa causa) y todavía recibo la Santa Comunión? ¿Trato el domingo como un día para la familia y para la oración, o lo trato como cualquier otro día?

4. Cuarto Mandamiento: Honra a tu padre y a tu madre. Si todavía vivo en casa de mis padres, ¿les respon-do y les falto el respeto constantemente? Si soy padre de familia, ¿respeto a mis hijos? ¿Alguna vez he descargado mi furia sobre mis hijos?

5. Quinto Mandamiento: No matarás. ¿Me doy cuenta de que asesino la reputación de las personas cuando hablo mal de ellas — chismeando, criticando o simplemente faltando a la caridad?

6. Sexto Mandamiento: No cometerás adulterio. ¿Entiendo que hasta pensar pensamientos impuros acerca de alguien es cometer adulterio en mi corazón? ¿Busco placer egoísta con actos impuros solo o con alguien más?

7. Séptimo Mandamiento: No robarás. ¿He hecho fraude en exámenes o evadido impuestos o robado horas o artículos en mi trabajo?

8. Octavo Mandamiento: No darás falso testimonio contra tu prójimo. ¿Digo rutinariamente “mentirillas” o he adornado las historias o he faltado a la verdad de cualquier manera? ¿He dejado de defender algo justo por temor o debilidad?

9. & 10. Noveno y Décimo Mandamientos: No codiciarás. ¿He sentido celos o envidia de otros? ¿He sentido pesar del bien ajeno, a pesar de que Dios ha sido bueno conmigo? ¿He envidiado la esposa o el auto o la casa o cualquier cosa de otra persona-? Si hemos batallado en esas áreas, necesitamos confesarlas en el sacramento de la reconciliación. Je-sús nuestro Señor quiere entrar en nuestro templo — el templo en donde el Espíritu Santo debe vivir — con el látigo de Su gracia, y expulsar esos pecados que están corrompiendo el verdadero propósito del Padre pa-ra nuestra vida. Que en esta Cuaresma, “el celo de la casa del Padre” nos consuma como consumió a Jesús(JN 2:17), para que esperemos ansiosos Su gloriosa resurrección.

Parents as you all know, Father Lowry is trying to raise money for new pews and flooring for our church by asking for as many people or groups to donate $2,000.00 per pew and I would like Faith Formation as a whole to parti-cipate by gathering funds for one pew the goal is for each class is to collect $110 dollars but the class with most collections will get a pizza party please divide the $110.00 by the amount of students in your class and that is the amount that each student should donate but if they bring more that would be great !!!! Let’s try our best to help our church.
