Dlamini resigns

African National Congress women’s league Presi-dent Bathabile Dlamini

resigned as Member of Parlia-ment.

Dlamini’s resignations comes after the resignation of four

members who were part of Presi-dent Cyril Ramaphosa’s cabinet. The four members include Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba, Makhosini Nkosi, Nomaindia Mfeketo and Tokozile Xasa.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, just two days after two ministers, Jeff Radebe and

Siyabonga Cwele, officially sub-mitted their resignations.

In her resignation, Dlamini ex-tended his gratitude to the current leadership of the African Nation-al Congress.

“My heart goes to the past and present leadership of the African National Congress Women’s

League in particular for allowing me to serve with them and passed the knowledge and information of what serving the people is all about.”

Meanwhile, six MPs are ex-pected to be sworn in on Tuesday afternoon to fill up the seats of the members who resigned.

President Ramaphosa

extends Eid-ul-Fitr well

wishes President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended his best wishes to the Muslim community as they cele-brate Eid-ul-Fitr.

The day marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadaan dur-ing which Muslims perform acts of charity and goodwill.

“The day of Eid-ul-Fitr also marks the beginning of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic cal-endar and is a time for family, community, generosity and com-passion. It is an opportunity to re-new and continue the values which unite us all -- tolerance, re-spect, and selflessness. It is tradi-tion in the Muslim community that after performing the Eid prayer, money is paid to the poor and needy,” the Presidency said.

As South Africans collectively strive to alleviate the plight of the indigent, the destitute and the un-employed, the Muslim communi-ty’s charitable efforts are to be commended, the Presidency said.

“The Thuma Mina message, which calls for an active citizenry infused with empathy for one’s fellow citizens, is aligned with one of the central tenets of the Is-lamic faith, namely to help others regardless of race, colour or creed,” the Presidency said.

As the nation works to grow South Africa, the President laud-ed the efforts of the Muslim com-munity in alleviating poverty in the country, saying: “We share a common goal to build a society rooted in the founding values of our Constitution.

Bhutiza hit maker’s death shock the fans

A female musician, Nichume Siwundla who is best known for her 2017 hit “Bhutiza” with Mobi Dix-

on passed away in an apparent suicide on Thursday.

The vocalist was also feature on sin-gles Daydreaming by Fistaz Mixwell and Mobi Dixon, as well as Far Away by DJ Anda featuring Mobi Dixon.

Her brother Qamani Siwundla said in a statement: “We, as a family are in absolute shock as to what has hap-pened. Learning that your sister has succumbed to emotions and taken her own life can never rest well.

“We obviously are left with a lot of questions but also know that she had one of the strongest characters in the family and whatever she was feeling at that moment triggered immense hopelessness. We stand united as a family regardless. Nichume was so loved and appreciated. We’re proud of all her achievements.”

Mobi Dixon who served as a mentor to the King Williams town native said he “will remember Nichume as a bright light at Top Chap Media where we signed her. She truly is gone too soon. May she rest in peace.”

Minister of Arts & Culture, Nathi Mthethwa extended his heartfelt con-dolences.

“We’re deeply saddened by the trag-ic passing of a shining star & celebrat-ed musician Nichume Refeloe Siwun-dla - a talented daughter of the soil whose lovely voice reverberated in our hearts & gifted us lasting memo-ries. We send our deepest sympa-thies to her loved ones.”

Mbalula set to announce transformation plan

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula said he announce the department’s action plan

that will speed up change and trans-formation, particularly in industries that are not transformed in the trans-port sector for the first 400 days in office.

The Department is set to engage its entities in an effort to ensure they are all focused on accelerating service delivery and making a difference in the lives of South Africans.

On Wednesday, the Minister re-leased a statement on the preliminary report on the investigation of the in-cident involving one of the new PRASA trains and a Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) temping machine at Eerste fabrieke station in Tshwane.

The incident took place on Satur-day, resulting in 64 commuters and two crew members on the temping machine suffering minor to moderate injuries. They were treated at various hospitals and subsequently dis-charged.

“The report concludes that the Transnet temping machine failed at the Greenview Station and lost its brakes causing it to accelerate on the

track towards the Eerste fabrieke Sta-tion, where it collided with the sta-tionary Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) train. Com-munication between the crew of the temping machine and the Centralised Train Control (CTC) centre failed.

“The report further notes that the signalling system between the Eerstefabrieke and Pienaarspoort sta-tions has not been functional for ap-proximately two years. This is a mat-ter of serious concern due to the heightened risk of manual authoriza-tion,” Mbalula said.

The Minister said it is clear from the report that the train crew per-formed their duties with diligence, calm and professionalism and avert-ed many more potential injuries.

He said he was concerned at a find-ing which alleged that commuters in-terfered with the safety operation of the train by activating the Passenger Emergency Alarm when the driver attempted to move the train back-wards to avoid collision.

“It is equally alarming to learn that passengers ignored the driver’s in-struction to evacuate the train, result-ing in injuries that could have been

avoided. This should not be construed as apportioning any blame to those who were injured in the incident.

“We wish them a speedy recovery and will do everything in our power to ensure that safety in our commuter rail environment improves in a sustainable way,” the Minister said.

The Minister encouraged the commuting public to re-spect all safety protocols within the railway environment.

“We urge PRASA to expedite the Board of Inquiry on this incident and we will ensure that decisive action is taken to ensure that there is no repeat of such an occur-

rence,” he said.He said the last State of Railway Safety Report pub-

lished by the Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) paints an unflattering picture of safety performance in the county’s railways.

“In 2017/2018 a total number of 1027 incidents of col-lisions during movement of rolling stock were reported by the RSR. This represented a 2% increase from the pre-vious year. This is cause for alarm and must spur us into action to arrest this situation,” the Minister said.

Law enforcement praised on successful arrest of robbers

JIET TACKLES YOUTH - TECHNICAL SKILLS THAT MATCH

National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General

Khehla Sitole, applauded team of law enforcement for the successful arrest of eight men alleged to be in a Cash-In-Transit robbers.

“I am pleased that members con-tinue to thwart these heinous crimes and to bring perpetrators to book. We are indeed making great strides in stabilising the CIT related crimes,” said Sitole.

The suspects have been arrested after members of the South African Police Service foiled an attempt to execute a heist at Evaton Mall in the Vaal.A multi-disciplinary team comprising of various law enforce-ment agencies including members from the Johannesburg Metro Po-lice Department spotted five vehi-cles with false registration number plates after holding observation in various areas on Saturday.

ti-disciplinary team which led to a shootout.

As a result, eight suspects were arrested, one male suspected died after one of the vehicles caught fire after crashing into a home in Sebokeng. Police say two other suspects were taken to hospital under police guard.

Incriminating evidence such as two rifles and three magazines were recovered by the team as

well as five vehicles. Police are still searching for five

suspects. Members of the commu-nity are encouraged to report any information that can lead police to the whereabouts of the suspects to the police’s Crime Stop number 08600 10111.

More revelation on Gupta-owned ANN7

Former Gupta-owned ANN7 news editor Rajesh Sundaram painted a bad picture of his

then employer, the Guptas. In his testimony at the Zondo Com-

mission of Inquiry of the State Cap-ture, Sundaram plaits a tapestry of deliberate disregard for labour law, let alone basic human decency.

eNCA reporter Michael Appel who worked for 5 years at the channel, also shared his experiences of work-ing for the Guptas.

He details how the working hours were insane at the media house.

A February 2015 work roster shows journalists being required to work 10-hour shifts, 12 days in a row. It soon became apparent that the Basic Con-ditions of Employment Act was there to be ignored.

“The sense that I got is that they didn’t really respect the people who worked for them,” Sundaram said.

“They thought they were all serv-ants who could be treated in any way they want. They could be kept in sub-human conditions.”

Ethel Williams Abrahamse, a for-mer ANN7 employee, started working at the channel three days before its launch. She stayed for only six months and remains trau-matised to this day. “At ANN7 you worked because somebody tells you to work,” said Abrahamse.

“If Atul Gupta tells you I want you to go shoot that and you say you’ve just done 12 hours.

He says, well you do want your job or you don’t want your job. You decide.”

Nowadays the ANN7 building is nothing more than an empty shell now.

It is a place where careers began but also a place of suffering and degradation.

Atteridgeville’s orphanage sacked by Social Development

The Kingdom Life Child and Youth centre could be closing after the pro-

vincial Department of Social De-velopment denied funding for lack of compliance.

Affectionately called “Gogo” founder of the home, Nomalizo Magoba established Kingdom Life in her three-bedroom house in 1999 to foster neglected chil-dren in her community.

To date the 58 orphaned, abused and neglected children in Atterid-geville are facing uncertainty as the funding was cut to their shel-

ter.Since January this year, the

Gauteng Department of social Development has cut funding to the home. The shelter now relies on the generosity of people and businesses in Atteridgeville. The social development department said “Kingdom Life’s board is unconstitutional and funds have been mismanaged.”

They now plan on moving the children.

Gogo Magoba denies any mis-management of funds and says the home is willing to vote in a new board for the sake of the children.

City of Joburg dismiss 8 employees for maladministration

Eight City of Johannes-burg employees have been dismissed upon

guilty of manipulation on bid evaluation process. They addi-tionally authorised unjustified payments to a service provider.

Economic Development MMC Leah Knott said their dismissal fol-lows a long disciplinary process about revealed R54 million budget.

“The budget was to fund a 2016 event, COP 17, which is a world wildlife conference seeking to combat illegal trade in animals and fauna. This resulted in actual spend

of close to R66 million. It was dis-covered that unjustified and unau-thorised additional payments were made to the service provider above and beyond the R54 million”, he said.

Knott added that employees in-volved in the deliberate manipula-tion of the evaluation process and

illegal payments were based in the Department of Economic Develop-ment, Group Legal, Finance and Environment and Infrastructure Services.

“Current multi-party administra-tion in the City has zero tolerance to corruption and the abuse of rate-payers’ money. The City of Joburg

continues to act against corrup-tion, and continue to dismiss em-ployee who violate the trust and responsibility bestowed upon them.

This is to uphold good govern-ance and serve residents with honesty and dedication”, said Knott.

SAA appoints Zuks Ramasia an Interim CEO

South African Airways (SAA) has appointed Zuks Ramasia as its acting CEO following

the resignation of its CEO Vuyani Jarana last week.

The Board of SAA made the an-nouncement during a media brief-

ing on Friday.During the announce-ment of the interim CEO, SAA Board member Thandeka Mgoduso said the board has begun a search, domestically and globally, for a permanent CEO with appropriate experience and expertise to stabi-lise the airline and to oversee the implementation of the long-term

Zuks RamasiaThe South African Reserve

Bank (SARB) has lauded the South African Consti-

tution for enhancing the country’s basic human rights since 1996.

SARB Governor Lesetja Kgan-yago said the central bank this year, while considering the most significant way to mark 25 years of democracy, opted to celebrate the Constitution.

He was speaking on Wednesday during the launch of the SA25 commemorative circulation and collectable coins at the Constitu-tional Court in Johannesburg.

“The enhancement in basic hu-man rights – the rights to housing, health care, basic services such as water and electricity, the rights of workers, the rights of civil organi-sations, the accountability of the executive to Parliament, the trans-formation of public finance man-agement, the independence and competence of the judiciary, the independence and mandate of the SARB – all come from the Consti-tution,” said Kganyago.

SARB commemorative coins celebrate

constitutionStaff Writer

The SARB and South African Mint started the project last year in which they hoped to capture some of the essential elements of the Constitution in coins.

The new SA25 commemorative circulation and collectable coins also honours the vision of the ar-chitects of the Constitution.

“The team at the South African Mint tapped into the perspectives of young South Africans and the creativity of various artists for the themes and designs of the SA25 ‘Celebrating South Africa’ coins,” he said.

“It is, in fact, the first time in the history of the SARB and the South African Mint that South Africans were consulted to this extent in de-veloping coin themes and designs. I am told that, during the engage-ment with young South Africans, ‘our constitutional rights’ came up several times, which made this the overarching theme that we decid-ed to depict on the coins.”

These perspectives, he said, were brought to life by some of the country’s most talented young art-ists who not only poured passion into the project but also captured the essence of the theme.

“One of the main functions of the SARB is to ensure there is a sufficient supply of high-quality banknotes and coins. This is the one function of the SARB that puts it in the pockets and wallets of all South Africans. It is only fit-ting that the money we use reflects the identity of our country,” Kgan-yago said.

“It is also the responsibility of the SARB to ensure the integrity of the banknotes and coins in cir-culation.”

He emphasised that the central bank had to ensure that banknotes and coins remain a secure method of payment, a unit of account, and a store of wealth.

“A banknote is but a piece of pa-per, and a coin is but a piece of metal. Both derive their worth from the trust that the citizens of a coun-try have in the country’s currency. The confidence that South Africans have in their banknotes and coins is based on trust that the banknotes and coins are authentic, and trust in the institution that issues them,” he said

EMS launches Winter Safety Campaign The City of Johannesburg’s

Emergency Management Ser-vices (EMS) launched its an-

nual Winter Safety Campaign at Zam-impilo Informal Settlement, in Johannesburg.

Department of Public Safety MMC Michael Sun said the campaign was launched in an effort to combat usual fire-related injuries in informal settle-ments during the cold months.

“There were reduction of 332 shacks due to fire in the 2017/2018 financial year from over 500 during the 2016 winter season. EMS continues to strengthen its pro-active fire safety measures in an effort to reduce these fire incidents. These unforeseen cir-cumstances are preventable if proper cooking and lighting equipment is used and households know how to identify fire risks”, said Sun.

He added that EMS has additionally

found recent trend of damaging fires caused during domestic disputes. Sun said illegal electrical connections are another serious concern, which often results in people being electrocuted and possible death. He said this often happens to young people.

“Recent door to door campaign in Zamimpilo introduced basic fire safe-ty education and 78 members of the community took part in the depart-ment’s Community Emergency Re-sponse Team programme. Women at-tended the campaign mostly. They were trained about basic emergency response, fire safety, burn wound dressing, CPR, and the critical Bucket Brigade.

“This is used where community members form a human chain and use buckets of water or sand to distinguish fires”, he added.

Sun said fires especially in informal

settlements can lead to unnecessary deaths and loss of property which leave communities in vulnerable state.

“I urge residents of Johannesburg to heed some fire safety tips in their daily lives. They should refrain from using cooking equipment such as paraffin stoves that are not SABS approved. This can lead to explosions that start fire.

“They should exercise care when highly flammable materials are used in open fires and braziers.

“These energy sources can lead to death especially when inhaled in toxic smoke. Residents should place can-dles on proper candle holders or flat surface therefore to prevent them from falling.

“They should also ensure that elec-trical appliances are switched off and candles are blown out before going to bed”, said Sun.

SASSA encourage beneficiaries to report corrupt officials

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has reminded social grant beneficiaries that all servic-es provided by the agency are free.

This follows a commotion of enquiries about fees to access SASSA services.

“Beneficiaries must not pay any SASSA official, or even scammers who pretend to be SASSA officials. Any person de-manding money for SASSA services must be reported to the nearest SAPS police station,” read the statement.

SASSA in the statement urged beneficiaries to report any SASSA official who requires money to provide services at this toll free number 0800 60 10 11.

The agency said it is aware of many criminals preying on the frail, the aged and people living with disability as easy tar-gets to be robbed.

“These criminals promise to offer SAS-SA services faster than the normal process. Beneficiaries must not hesitate to report these people to the nearest Police sta-tions.”

All social grant recipients are reminded that the selling of SASSA gold cards is il-legal and criminal. SASSA cards are avail-able only at SASSA offices for beneficiar-ies who are qualifying and have been authorised to get social grants.

When a person found with SASSA cards illegally he or she will face the mighty hand of the law. Beneficiaries are warned to desist from the tendency of using SAS-SA gold cards to borrow money from loan sharks and thereafter come to SASSA of-fices for another new cards, trying to dodge the loan. The agency said benefi-ciaries misusing social grants payment cards are risking to be taken out of the so-cial grants system and can be prosecuted by the State. Beneficiaries seeking more information have been urged to contact the SASSA toll between 8am and 4pm from Monday to Friday.

A baby was stolen in hospital and sold for R2500

Mother of the baby that was allegedly kid-napped from Chris Hani

Baragwanath Academic Hospital, said her baby was sold for R2 500.

Bikokuhle Hlatswayo, who is the mother of the baby, said she had been resting after undergoing Cae-

sarian section procedure and was heavily sedated.

“I woke up to notice that my baby was missing. A patient next to me told me that a woman who claimed to be my mother-in-law came around while I was asleep. I later saw someone I do not know leave the hospital with a newborn baby when viewing CCTV footage.

What upsets me is that the security guard was busy with her phone when the alleged kidnapper passed with my baby”, said Hlatswayo.

Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku said after launching ba-by-kidnapping investigations, po-lice found the baby at a house in Diepkloof Soweto.

“There was a tip-off leading po-

lice to a house in Diepkloof, where the baby was found”, said Masuku.

Hlatswayo said police informed her that her baby was sold for R2 500. The family of the baby is also considering taking legal action af-ter this traumatic ordeal.

However, police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo say they cannot comment on the allegations.

The Department of Health Spokesperson Lesemang Matuka also said they are aware of the alle-gations but cannot comment until the matter is before court.

The 35 years old suspect was ar-rested in connection with baby kid-napping. The suspect is expected to appear before Protea Magistrate Court.

JMPD’s IOC arrests 45 criminals since launch

City of Johannesburg Metro-politan Police Department (JMPD) IOC Reaction

Unit has been tightening its servic-es on criminal operation. Already 45 arrests were made for less than a month after IOC launched.

Department of Public Safety MMC Michael Sun said since the launch of the Integrated Intelli-gence Operations Centre Reaction Unit (IOC Reaction Unit) on 14 May 2019, there has been a notable crime reduction in the Johannes-burg Inner City.

“The IOC Reaction Unit started with 80 officers, and it has since grown to 100 officers working un-dercover at different parts of the In-ner City, for 24 hours a day. The synergy between the Intergrated In-

telligence Operations Centre (IIOC). This is where the city-owned CCTV cameras are moni-tored. There is strategic deploy-ment and quick reaction time, muggers, armed robbers and hi-jackers are finding themselves in hand-cuffs and behind bars”, he said. Sun added that the unit’s nota-ble successes range from the arrest of three cable thieves caught red-handed in Hillbrow.

“Amongst the arrests, other mug-gers were apprehended in New-town. Other eight suspects were

caught red-handed in Fordsburg while busy loading stolen goods to the value of R128 000. We have also discovered that large part of these incidents are armed robberies, street muggings, pick pocketing, hi-jack-ing, theft and drug dealing”, said Sun.

He added that by working with private sector, they would continue to bolster the unit and expand the CCTV camera network to other parts of the City.

“JMPD and especially the IOC Reaction Unit will continue to serve our residents and ensure their safe-ty. I congratulates these brave men and women who risk their own safety in order to protect our residents. I have no doubt that synergy between the residents and government will keep criminals off our streets”, said Sun.

Premier cuts luxuries for Northern Cape executive

Northern Cape Premier Dr Zamani Saul has kept his promise to prioritise on the needs of the people.

During his inaugural speech, Dr Saul announced reduction on the size of the provincial executive. He also bought 23 ambulances, which is the first batch of 63, instead of new cars for the MECs.

Unlike other premiers, Dr Saul delivered his in-

augural speech in the Lerato Park informal settle-ment instead of the Northern Cape Provincial Leg-islature.

He said hard work and courage are values which will define the sixth administration.

“I commit here that I will be an activist premier who will always be among the people. I will spend less time absorbed in the comforts of the office and dwelling in the shade of self-adulation.”

City Press reported quoted Dr Saul having said his office will be based at the provincial health de-partment and another one in the casualty section of Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital.

The premier says he is not happy with the perfor-mance of the education and health departments in the province and is proposing to be more involved in these by having offices in those specific depart-ments.

“At the reception in the provincial department of health, we are putting a corner office for myself. It should be a desk and a chair where I will work.”

“I will also put up an office at the casualty of Robert Sobukwe Hospital Complex as it can’t be that people go to the hospital and sit there for hours and not attended too. I cannot be confined to the premier’s office when there are such challeng-es that departments face,” he added.

South Africans react positively to male hair extensions

Hair extension is nothing new to South African Women, it does not matter which hair-

style you prefer or want to try, and hair extensions are the ultimate way to primp the hair. For most women, getting a hair exten-sions is not a big deal but there seems to be a double standard when it comes to men wearing weaves.

It is common for men to experience baldness in their lives, especially as they grow older. For others, a bald head is something they inherit at an

early age and there seems to be no help in sight.

Democratic Republic of Congo na-tional, Patrick Missile who is a wig guru, is known for creating magnifi-cent wigs for the “it girls” of South Af-rican entertainment such as Bonang Matheba, Minnie Dlamini, and Khanyi Mbau, saw a market for men who ex-perience baldness and created wigs suitable for men.

While his business booms, it’s also an act of kindness because men no longer have to suffer in silence as they tend to have little to no hair.

Although Missile introduced male

weaves about three years ago, it is only now that more black men are starting to wear them with pride.

“I’m excited that we as black males are improving in terms of our looks. We accepted the weave trend very pos-itively, not in a discriminating way. “People are really on it, there is pro-gress. We have people travelling from all over Africa and South African to get their hair done,” says Missile.

Missile, who is used to glamming up the stars, usually designs weaves for actors who need hair for particular roles.

He suggests that people let their side

hair grow, and only fill the mid-dle to make it look as real as possible. “For the middle, I look for the good texture of hair that will match with their natural hair. I create a base for the cen-tre part where there is no hair to stick the extensions.

“And for those with short hair, I use their hair as support so the scalp can still breathe. Male ex-tensions are very strong and one can even swim with them he says”

Rand hits eight-month low amid uncertaintyThe rand has been under pres-

sure following contradictory statements by the ANC

about the role of the Reserve Bank. The rand was trading at its lowest

in eight months against the dollar on Thursday morning as the ANC ap-pears to be fragmented regarding the mandate of the SA Reserve Bank.

At 09.40am the rand had weak-

ened 0.4% to R14.9252/$, its lowest since October according to Iress, 0.48% to R16.7604/€ and 0.4% to R18.9236/£. The euro was up 0.1% to $1, 1232. The benchmark R186 gov-ernment bond had weakened, with its yield rising 6.5 basis points to 8.49%. Bond yields move inversely to bond prices. The rand has been under pres-sure following contradictory state-ments from the ANC about the role of the Reserve Bank.ANC secretary-gen-eral Ace Magashule said on Tuesday that the governing party wanted to ex-pand the mandate of the central bank

and to explore quantitative easing.Finance minister Tito Mboweni and

the ANC’s economic transformation head, Enoch Godongwana, have since contradicted Magashule’s statement.

“The mixed messaging about the SARB shareholding and economic policy that we have been getting from the ruling party is unfortunately under-mining the confidence that is needed to kick start this economy,” said Sasfin Wealth fixed-income trader Alvin Chawasema.

“The recent rand performance and bond curve steepening are immediate

indicators of this anxiety, although the real damage is being done in the pri-mary industries where capital invest-ment is tentative.”

Poor economic data this week has also added to the rand’s woes: first-quarter GDP contracted 3.2% and the IHS Markit purchasing managers’ index fell to 49.3 points in May from 50.3 in April. Gold had gained 0.35% to $1,334.92/oz. and platinum was lit-tle changed at $805.85. Brent crude was up 0.36% to $60.8 a barrel. Source: eNCA

Tears runs as learner granted 5000 bail

Forest High School learner, Mohammed Mwela (19) ap-peared before Judge

Bashimane Molwana at the Johan-nesburg Magistrate court on Monday morning where he was granted a bail of R5000.

Mwela allegedly stabbed sixteen-year-old Daniel Kopela to death and further stabbed two boys on June, 3, 2019.

Mwela was charged with one count of murder and two of attempted mur-der. The investigative officer testified on an affidavit that he is not opposing bail for the accused.

Molwana said that whether the ac-cused belonged in a gang or not re-mains unanswered because the inves-tigative officer’s affidavit did not state that the accused belonged to any gang.

“If the accused belonged to a gang the Schedule would have been differ-ent.”

The judge continued to say that the state was not opposing bail for the ac-cused.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Louw Mjonod-wane said that the decision to grant bail emanates from the facts that are at the states disposal; hence they did

Minister Creecy rolls up sleeves for Good Deeds

Newly-appointed Environment, Forestry and Fisheries Minster Barbara Creecy has hit the

ground running with a clean-up to cele-brate World Environment Day.

World Environment Day is the big-gest annual event for positive environ-mental action and takes place every June 5. It is the people’s day for doing something to take care of the Earth, and that “something” can be local, national or global. It can be a solo action or in-volve a crowd.

Creecy, who was sworn into the port-folio on 30 May, on Wednesday led the community of Mamelodi East, Preto-ria, in a campaign to clean up and raise awareness about waste management and the significance of a hygienic and safe environment to the health of all South Africans.

The Deputy Minister of Environ-ment, Forestry and Fisheries, Maggie Sotyu and Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Agriculture and Envi-ronment, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, joined Creecy in the initiative, held un-der the auspices of the Good Green Deeds programme that was launched by the President in March 2019.

Ramaphosa’s aim is to mobilise all sectors of South Africa to become more environmentally conscious. The pro-

gramme seeks to promote behavioural change towards littering, illegal dump-ing and waste in general.

Since the launch of the programme, tons of waste have been collected in different communities in efforts to im-prove health and wellbeing of South Africans as well as the very appearance of the country by eradicating illegal dumping, littering and unsustainable waste management practices.

Creecy said government is working on a waste management strategy for

better control of waste. “… Once the process is complete, we will then focus on the implementation of the strategy,” she said. The Minister expressed con-cern over the lack of efficient waste management at community level. She said emphasis will be placed on em-powering communities to manage waste.

“One of the things I would like to see happening is environmental conscious-ness in our communities. If you want to change behaviour of communities,

campaigns such as this will have to be on an ongoing basis,” Creecy said, add-ing that environmental issues are every-body’s business. Local resident Thuso Mphoko said he was inspired by the Minister’s determination to better the environment. “We want government to continue encouraging people to take care of their environments.”

Mphoko wants the momentum of to-day’s campaign sustained so that com-munities can get used to cleaning up their environment.

Health Department manage ARV amid global

shortage

A global shortage of lamivu-dine, a second line regi-men of anti-retroviral

(ARV) treatment has affected the availability of this ARV in health facilities in South Africa.

According to the Health Depart-ment, the majority of patients (over 90%) that are on ARV treat-ment receive the first line option which is a single dose fixed dose combination of Tenofovir/Emtric-itabane/Efavirenz tablet.

“This first line treatment is wide-ly available and there is no short-age of this product. Some patients (6%) are resistant/cannot tolerate the first line regimen and are then put onto the second line regimen of abacavir/lamivudine or zidovu-dine/ lamivudine,” said depart-ment spokesperson Popo Maja.

The majority of patients are moved to the second line largely due to resistance and not tolerabil-ity.

The global shortage of lamivu-dine has affected the availability of abacavir/lamivudine and zidovu-dine/ lamivudine.

Pharmaceutical company Mylan is contracted to supply abacavir/lamivudine and zidovudine/ lami-vudine, however, they are affected by the global shortage and cannot supply the entire ordered quanti-ties.

Mylan supplies stock on a week-ly basis as it is being produced.

“Due to the current supply con-straints, we have advised provin-cial departments to closely moni-tor the distribution and rational use of these medicines until the supply is fully restored.

“These measures include firstly, the redistribution of stock between facilities so there is no stock piling in any particular facility so that all patients receive treatment,” said Maja.

Secondly, the department has alerted health officials that patients should be dispensed a lower quan-tity of stock than usual which may include issuing a month’s supply instead of the standard two or three-month supply.

“Our clinicians have been in-formed that if implementation of the above two measures are unsuc-cessful and there is no treatment at a facility, the recommended thera-peutic alternative is tenofovir (TDF) 300mg/emtricitabane (FTC) 200mg dual formulation tablet, with dose adjustments for renal impairment,” said Maja.

The department said it will con-tinue to monitor the situation closely in consultation with prov-inces, and will continue to provide updated communication on this matter.

not oppose bail. She added that the family was consulted about this decision and told them what was going to hap-pen, however they would leave it to the court to make the final decision. The deceased was facing a criminal charge of armed robbery in the same court and was supposed to appear in August. The NPA said they would need a death certificate to formally withdraw the charges because he is now deceased.

“It’s the deceased and one of his friend who was stabbed in this case that are actually facing criminal charges, so you will understand that deciding on whether or not bail should be opposed, the state had to consider a whole lots

of facts.” said Mjonodwane. An uncle to the deceased who preferred not to be named

said that the accused needed to be punished.“He knows that if he does something like this again he

is going to come out for 5000 rand, justice will be done. If the court doesn’t do justice, the one up there will do It.” said the uncle.

Molwana said that the Department of Education should make arrangements for Mwela to finish his exams and not interact with witnesses. He also said that if he has a pass-port he should hand it to the investigative officer in charge of the matter.

Racist Catzavelos faces prosecution in Greece

Racist Adam Catzavelos (pic-tured) appeared at the Randburg Magistrate Court

on Thursday morning on one count of crimen injuria and the matter was postponed to the 10th of July.

Catzavelos defence indicated to the court that they would like to make representatives to the office of the director of public prosecutions.

NPA spokesperson Phindi Louw Mjondondwane said that this will re-quire the director of public prosecu-tion to review the earlier decision that was taken by the senior public prosecutor of the Randburg Magis-trate Court.

Mjondondwane continue to say that she was hoping that an outcome would be ready on the 10th of July and the NPA would communicate the decision through the court.

EFF’s Gauteng Provincial chair-person Mandisa Masego said she was certified that the NPA were pull-ing their weight and they were in

communication with the Humans Right Commission because they had started initiating their own proceed-ing which were based on their own complaint.

“The defence tried to get a much further date and we cannot have that

kind of delay because Adam has al-ready defied the South African justice system by running away the entire time and the delays will count against him.” Said Mashego

Mashego went on to say that they suspect that the defence will argue

due restriction issues and they would bring their legal team to join the NPA to deal with any technicalities and un-necessary blockages.

“For us the interest of this matter is to go to trial as soon as possible.”

Mashego said this case does not be-

long to her or the EFF but the African people and their dignity.

She added that if Cartzavelos of-fered an apology through the media that is his right and if he wanted to engage with them he would have to do it through their lawyers and the NPA.

“When his lawyers wanted to speak to me, I was advised not to speak to them at this stage unless they are requesting a formal meeting”

She continued to say that Catza-velos apology is not justice and he could apologise and still serve jail time.

“Everyone can do as they wish and just apologise”.

Mashego condemned people who think that South Africans are cryba-bies, sensitive and do not want to get over apartheid.

“We cannot get over it and we will not get over it especially because of the result of apartheid, racism, black poverty and black subrogation to eco-nomic equality” explained Masego

The EFF’ Gauteng provincial chair-person welcomed the SAPS confir-mation that Catzavelos also faces charges of crimen injuria in Greece, where he made the racist remarks.

Eight suspects to be arrest for Meyiwa’s deathSunday World has revealed that

police have managed to make a breakthrough on the murder

of Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.

The revelation came after police Minister Bheki Cele made calls for the case to be prioritised.

In March, Cele said he had not giv-en up on bringing Meyiwa’s killers to

book and was planning to map out a way to find justice for the late Orlan-do Pirates star goalkeeper.

Cele added that finding Meyiwa’s killers was the most important task in his tenure as police minister.

“I am very sure that in this country, no matter what you do, until you deal with the Senzo matter, nobody will listen to you,” Cele said during an in-

terview on Power FM breakfast. On the investigations, it is alleged that three well-known individuals, along with a top cop will soon be charged with defeating the ends of justice, while the fifth suspect will be charged with murder. All the people accused are reported to be public figures. The remaining three suspects are said to be the “mother of one of the sus-

pects” and “two other people”. The police are reportedly investigating witnesses for concealing evidence to protect the murder suspect. It is al-leged that the suspects underwent a lie detector test. However one of the suspects told the media that police are being desperate and there is not case against them. Meyiwa was shot to death at his girlfriend singer Kelly

MEC Mamabolo re-opens taxi operations in Soweto

Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport MEC Jacob Mamabolo, presented the agreement of Witwatersrand Taxi Associa-

tion (WATA) and Nancefield Dube West (NANDU-WE) taxi associations’ operations, at Hector Pieters-en Memorial in Orlando West, Soweto.

Mamabolo said the discussions involved the de-partment, WATA, NANDUWE and the community of Soweto about whether the community is satisfied and wants taxis back on the routes soon.

“Taxis will hit the routes on the 18 June 2019, fol-lowing the two associations’ suspension from 15 March 2010. There will be 100 taxis from each asso-ciations, WATA and NANDUWE operating on the roads. The total of taxis from both associations will be 200. During the operation, stickers will be put on 200 taxis and the system will be recording those tax-is. There will be monitoring by security companies about how the operation goes for three months”, said Mamabolo.

Chairperson of WATA Amon Majozi said they feel privileged as it is their first time to sit next to the MEC. He added that they have agreed to work to-gether with NANDUWE, therefore to transport pas-sengers.

“We are working with the department and law en-forcement. Killings of each other in the taxi industry should stop”, said Majozi.

Gauteng National Taxi Association spokesperson Theo Malele said the agreement that has been signed is a symbol of final agreement.

“Financial Institutions repossessed many taxis un-der these two associations during strike. Children have dropped out of institutions, women have be-come widows and children are hungry as the results of taxi strike”, he said.

Malele added that as GNTA they call upon law en-forcement and government to ensure that the signed agreement is practiced.

“No one should violate with the agreement and if so, should face full might of the law. We have had enough”, said Malele.

Mamabolo asked GNTA to facilitate the agree-ment with them as they are unveiling it to the people of Soweto.

“The agreement includes the following, executive committees from different associations joint togeth-er to deliver transport services to Soweto people. Affected routes should be investigated during the operation. There will be removal of armed security companies on the affected routes. The department will adapt the security which will monitor the com-muters”, said Mamabolo.

City of Ekurhuleni introduce drones to Tsakane youth

In a more fast-paced world we live in, drones are transforming the way we work and play.

They can be used in film industry for when filmmakers want that perfect aerial shot that is almost impossible to get, for rescue work-ers mapping damage from natural disaster or a farmer determining how to increase crop yield.

The City of Ekurhuleni has on Wednesday introduced the youth of Tsakane to the ex-panding field of drones in a hands-on, inter-active Drone Build-A-Thon challenge.

The event director for the Ekurhuleni Drone Build-A-Thon from Mzansi Aero-space Technologies Victor Radebe, said the drone demonstration is aimed to empower the youth.

“We decided to bring the drone demonstra-tion to Tsakane to empower the youth in Ekurhuleni and encourage them to rise up and run the industry.”

The city’s Executive Mayor Mzwandile

Masina said that the most promising partici-pants in the Drone Build-A-Thon will be awarded a scholarship to train to become drone pilots at one of the institution accred-ited by the South African Civil Aviation Au-thority.

He added that the Drone Build-A-Thon and Demonstration event is an opportunity for young people to be exposed to this niche market and also know that they too can be-come drone pilots.

Magazi Madi, a young safety manager from Rocket Mine urged the learners not to fly drones in barred spaces.

“When you buy yourself a drone and are excited to fly it, remember that drones are prohibited in public spaces, near power sta-tions, police stations, 10km near airports and military airspaces.”

New plan to champion rights of people with HIV, TB

Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize, says the Human Rights Plan launched at Gugu Dlamini Park in

Durban on Tuesday was developed to strengthen the human rights of people with HIV and Aids, TB and STIs.

The Minister called on government, civil society, the private sector and development partners to work together to ensure that the plan is executed in all parts of society, in-cluding in homes, communities, schools, in-stitutions of higher learning and workplaces.

Mkhize said the plan is a comprehensive response to human rights and gender-related barriers to HIV and TB services. The plan will also tackle the stigma and discrimination faced by people when trying to access essen-tial civic and health services.

“They experience the worst forms of stig-ma and discrimination at the hands of their families, community members and regretta-bly many civil servants,” Mkhize said.

The findings of the Stigma Index Survey conducted in 2014 painted a dire picture of the prevalence of stigma experienced by those affected and infected by HIV and TB.

“This challenge extends to other key and vulnerable populations such as sex workers and the LGBTIQ+ populations, especially transgender individuals.

“They experience the worst forms of stig-ma and discrimination at the hands of their families, community members and regretta-bly many civil servants,” Mkhize said.

The launch of the Human Rights Plan was held at Gugu Dlamini Park to honour Gugu Dlamini, a woman from KwaMancinza, east-ern KwaZulu-Natal. She was killed after dis-closing her HIV status on radio.

Mkhize praised Dlamini’s courageous spir-it in disclosing her status.

“Dlamini’s untimely passing is indeed an example of the supreme price paid because we have not been able to fully address stigma and discrimination. Every one of us must re-

double our efforts in ensuring that no one is discriminated,” the Minister said.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala said the provincial government will continue with campaigns and mobilise communities to deal with persistently high levels of new infections.

We remain concerned about new infections and the fact that adolescent girls and young women are disproportionately affected. This is an area we want to focus on as we move forward.

“We need to deal with all barriers that are experienced by people affected by HIV, Aids and TB. We must deal with social exclusion and discrimination in healthcare facilities, homes, recreational facilities, schools, churches, in the workplace and in other com-munity gatherings,” Zikalala said.

Prior to the launch of the plan, the Premier joined a march organised by Aids activists. The march started in Dinizulu and ended at Gugu Dlamini Park where the launch took place.

fant at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospi-tal.

It is allegedly that Ramoisa sold the infant for an amount of R2500.

Ramoisa will appear in court on June 21 with the possibility of a plea and bail appli-cation.

A family friend said that they were in pain upon hearing the news and asked them-selves how an infant could disappear at the hospital when hospital staff is there.

She says she is happy that the accused is in custody. She went on to say she would let the law to take its course.

“I wish the accused gets punished for her deeds.”

She says the parents of the child could not make it to court because they are depressed and needed counseling.

She urged mothers who just gave birth to be extra careful in hospitals, because it still puzzles her how an infant would disappear when the hospital staff and securities are there.

William Hlatswayo, a grandfather to the child said that he is sad about what hap-pened to his grandchild.

He said when he heard the story they could not even sleep and went on social media to share the news in an attempt to seek for help.

“This is my daughter’s 3rd child; she struggled giving birth and this why she had this child via operation and for.”

ANCYL official twitter account hacked

The ANC Youth League official twit-ter account was hacked by an un-known hacker who called for the

body to be disbanded. In a series of tweets the hacker claimed

that they were doing this in an effort to “pro-tect people from themselves” through a “principled call to disband the ANCYL”.

In another tweet the hacker claimed that the account was not hacked and that there

were just “angry at old people.” The ANCYL managed to delete the initial

tweets and tweeted that the account had been hacked and asked followers to disre-gard all the posts that had been sent out ear-lier. However, the hacker fired back with an-other tweet saying “Whoever is deleting our tweets, you are not going to silence us.”

ANCYL also claimed that they are work-ing with authorities to resolve the matter.

A third body of a homeless person found in Tshwane

A third body of a homeless person was found in Pretoria. It is believed that a serial killer may be on the

loose in Tshwane area, targeting homeless people sleeping in city parks.

According to eNCA, three homeless men have been murdered in the same manner in the past two weeks. All victims were report-edly killed in their sleep. They were stabbed and hit by a blunt object. According to rep-resentatives of an NGO who works closely with homeless people in the city, more homeless people have reported being at-tacked in a similar manner, but managed to

escape. Around 6 000 people in Pretoria are considered homeless.

Police spokesperson Captain Daniel Ma-vimbela said that they have deployed intelli-gence units to the area.

“We are patrolling areas that are frequent-ly used by homeless people, to ensure them that we heighten the awareness”

“Though the deceased were found to have suffered blunt force trauma and multiple stab wounds to the upper body, the motive behind the killings and identities remain subject to investigation.” Said Mavimbela in a statement.

Edward Mothibi races to victory in 2019 Comrades Marathon

The father of three from the rural village of Magoegoe in Mahikeng said he missed his family during the seven

weeks training camp at Dullstroom in Mpuma-langa. “I could not see my family for those weeks. It was a very long lonely journey.” Mothibi, who is employed at Impala Platinum Mine in Rustenburg and runs for Nedbank, thanked his training partners from Impala Mar-athon Club and his coach Dave Adams who helped him to prepare for the comrade mara-thon.

The runner nicknamed “Slender” won the Comrades marathon on his second attempt. North West Education and Sports Develop-ment MEC Mmaphefo Matsemela said the provincial government was extremely excited about Mothibi’s achievement. “The narratives around the quotation of our late president Nel-son Mandela is quite clear when he says the sports has the power to change the world. Your world, that corner is being changed by you be-

ing a champion,” said Matsemela. She was speaking at the Rustenburg leg of

welcoming the Comrades champion on Tues-day night.

“Today coming here everybody wants to greet you, but before we could not even recog-nise that there is this kind of ‘small dynamite’ within us as communities ... but today we want to rub shoulders with you, indeed your world has changed. “We believed that since your world has changed, and you are realising this and you see this with your eyes we believe that the legacy will be left to others moving for-ward. “We have won as a nation, we have won as the province.” A victory bus will drive through the streets of Rustenburg on Wednes-day, via Swartruggens and Zeerust to Ma-hikeng where the second leg of the welcoming ceremony will be held.“The people of North West must feel a touch of a champion. I am so happy that I felt a touch of a champion, we want this to be felt by number of people in the North West province because you have in-spired us,” Matsemela said.
