AN ILLUSTRATION FOR BAHRAIN'S GLOBAL ACCEPTANCE:

Members of the Kewalram family have seen Bahrain grow from a small market country that consisted and revolved around mostly Bab Al- Bahrain Tijjar Road and Sheikh Abdullah Road to the large sprawling

cosmopolitan country that we know it to be today. The company grew at incredible speed expanding to six shops by the 1950s and even opening in Dubai in the 1960s. Mr. Kewalram was succeeded by his son, Mr.

Haridas Kewalram’s Sons and his grandsons Sunder H. Kewalram and Baboo H. Kewalram.

Mr. Baboo Kewalram is the present Chairman of the company, ensuring that the company operates at the level expected. Under his leadership, the Kewalram brand found great success in the textile industry,

providing uniforms and clothing to large companies like ARAMCO.

Mr. Baboo Kewalram shares the exemplary history and achievements that Kewalram and Sons have over more than a century in the Kingdom.

Our family comes from the Tatta Sindh area, which is in the undivided Pakistan region. My grandfather was a pearl trader, who would finance divers and sell the pearls in Pakistan and India. My grandfather came to Bahrain in the 1880s and my father and Uncle joined him here. My father grew the business through a grocery store. My older brother Sunder Kewalram (Mr. Kishore’s father) came in 1952. I came here as a fresh graduate in 1955 because my father was unwell. We lived in the upstairs of our shop in Bab Al Bahrain, Manama. It was an old house, but very special to us.

The Kanoo family lived behind us and we would talk across the terraces/balconies. There were not many houses, electricity was scarce, but communities were very close in those days. We have always had a good relationship all the communities who welcomed us. We only moved our home opposite Manama

Centre in the late 1960s. We were surrounded by sea and when the tide was high, water would wash into our house. We used to sleep on the terrace because it was hot and there was no air conditioning.

There was no running sweet water and it was delivered in drums on donkeys from the Salmaniya area. We had a sweet water well where the temple hall now stands and it was better than the tap water.

There were no malls during that time, except Manama Souq, where we would meet people everyday on their way home. People would come all the way from BAPCO and Aramco and we met people everywhere from the GCC. The area that is now Bab Al Bahrain was a dock, where small boats would doc, large vessels would anchor away from the shore, and dhows would bring passengers to land. Times were very different then.

The temple has never been an issue for our Hindu devotees in Bahrain. We have celebrated Diwali, Holi and all the other Hindu religious days for decades or for centuries. My brother and I attended late Emir Shaikh Isa bin Salman at his Majlis every week. Shaikh Isa once told us that he had been to the temple when he was young when they put colours on him for Holi. Mr. Nabeel Zain lived beside the temple and all the children would come together to play in the temple courtyard.

This is a beautiful country and the people are warm and hospitable. My father was involved in founding the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI). We started a business in Dubai in 1962 and Mr. Kishore’s brother runs it now. The enterprise has diversified into jewellery, home electronics and appliances, security systems and, most recently, real estate, with 10 outlets spanning the Kingdom. It associates with world-famous brands such as Titan, Casio, VIP and Carlton luggage, Commax, Brother, Black & Decker and

all the top textile names in Japan and India. We are also managing partners of Bahrain’s Quality Education School.

We have the fourth generation of Kewalram living in Bahrain. India is a holiday destination for all of us. I myself have not left for almost 3 years. I have 3 sons and one daughter. Kishore is here and his sister lives in Dubai. I have 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

My brother died in a plane crash in 1988, so I left for India. The Emir enquired about our absence at the Majlis and was informed about the sad news by our Ambassador Mr. Menon. Shaikh Isa immediately telephoned us in Bombay to offer his condolences and told us to meet him. When we returned and went to meet Shaikh Isa, he invited us to sit next to him and said “We are very sorry for your loss, but Bahrain is your home. I am like a father to you so please do not hesitate to come to us”. That is the beauty of the ruling family; they have always been very kind to our community.

One Saturday morning, the Foreign

Minister His Excellency Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed was in Manama and he dropped in to visit me here. He reminded me how he would come with his brother and nanny every day and I would give them sweets. He is a very soft spoken and kindhearted man. In the past, my brother and I would visit government offices but nowadays I do not go to the ministry offices, but people visit every day. I enjoy my daily programme of going to the office in the morning, home for lunch and to the temple in the afternoon. There are so many Hindus in Bahrain but there are over 500 just within our community.

We want to expand the new temple to make new halls and a bigger prayer area. The community is taking care of the cost which is something we want to do. Currenlty we are awaiting approvals from the authorities. The land now belongs to the temple Bhatia community. Some parts of the land were donated by people who lived there before.

I remember Shaikh Isa once said to me “We accept all religions. You practice your

religion and we practice ours in peace. There should be no problems”. Even in Ramadan, we have no restrictions, the temple is open and we just advise people not to eat and drink outside the enclosed area.

The celebration by the King Hamad Global Centre of the 200 year anniversary of the temple coincided with the Bahrain Grand Prix. We are so proud that His Majesty encourages official guests to visit our temple. In 2017 we were honoured to receive HRH Prince Charles accompanied by HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. The following day on a Friday morning HH Shaikh Mohammed bin Salman with his freind came to the temple and even waited in the Souq until we opened at 11am. Everyone is welcome to the temple and are very proud that so many people from all over the world come here.

We deeply value our close ties with the generous rulers of yjis country. Nowhere else in the world will we find such a country to call our home.

The late Emir Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa receives the Thattai Bhatia Hindu Community committee members led by Mr. Baboo H. Kewalramon 28th November 1994 at Riffa Palace, Bahrain.

The Late Emir Shaikh Hamad Al Khalifa, HH Shaikh Mubarak. the Late Emir Shaikh Salman Al Khalifa and other guests visit the D.I family.

BAHRAIN: A MODEL OF INTER-RELIGIOUS HARMONY!

Bahrain is a model of inter-religious harmony and is well-known to people of all faiths living side by side and practicing their religion freely. The people of Bahrain are multinational and denominationally diverse with freedom, a sense of belonging, diversity and shared hopes, making the nation a role model for the world at large.

His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa says: “Our pride in the tolerance of Bahrain society can be seen in its people, in the coexistence of mosques, churches as well as Hindu temples. This unique sight has, over several centuries, being a visible sign of tolerance and a source of great pride for us.”

HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain says: “Bahraini society is based on cooperation and compassion among its citizens and residents, as well as their freedom, equality, security, tranquility, social solidarity and equal opportunities. These are the pillars of society guaranteed by the State.”

The government’s policy of funding all official religious institutions contributes to the free practice of religion. Members of religious groups who practice their faith privately do so without government interference and are permitted to maintain their own places of worship and display the symbols of their religion, such as crosses and statues of deities and saints.

Bahrain was deemed the “most religiously tolerant in the Middle East” by the Heavenly Culture World Peace

Restoration of Light (HWPL), an international organization that promotes religious tolerance all over the world.

“What we have seen and experienced in Bahrain has been excellent! In Bahrain, it was very easy because all the religious communities were operating independently with utmost ease. The religious freedom and togetherness in Bahrain is amazing.”-HWPL Middle East General Manager Vicky Kim

Here are some historic worshipping places in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Shaikha Moza bint Hamad Al Khalifa Mosque in Riffa: The mosque was built according to traditional Bahraini architectural style and was inaugurated in 2015. It includes a large hall for big events, as well as other service facilities. The 3,000 square meters, two-story mosque is equipped with a lift to ensure the comfort of worshippers. The state-of-the-art mosque can accommodate up to 2,000 worshippers, with 950 on the two floors, 850 in the courtyard and 250 in the women’s hall.

Al Fateh Grand MosqueAhmed Al-Fateh Mosque is in Manama,

the capital, and is part of an Islamic center, which includes the mosque, a department for Qur’anic studies and an Islamic library. Construction work began in 1984 and opened in 1988 by the late Emir of Bahrain, Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa. The mosque occupies an area of 6,500 square meters and can accommodate up to 7,000 worshippers. Its walls are beautifully ornamented with Kufic calligraphy and it is crowned with one of the largest fiberglass domes in the world.

Siyadi MosquePart of the 19th century Siyadi House complex, which belonged to eminent pearl merchant Ahmed bin Jassim Siyadi, the Siyadi Mosque is the oldest preserved mosque in Muharraq and is still used for daily prayers.

Al Khamis MosqueAl Khamis Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in the region. It was constructed during the period of Umayyad Caliph Umar in the 7th century (around 692 AD). The identical twin minarets on this ancient Islamic monument make it easily recognizable. The foundation dates back to the 11th century, though it has been rebuilt in the 14th and 15th centuries. During this reconstruction, the twin minarets were added.

Barbar TempleThe Barbar Temple is an archaeological site located in the village of Barbar and considered to be part of the Dilmun culture. Barbar Temple (the largest temple found in Bahrain) was built in three stages between 3000 and 2000 BC to worship the

legendary God Enki (God of Sweet Water & Wisdom). It is built on a spring of water. The remains include two sacrificial altars, a well and walls made of huge limestone blocks carved from Jidda Island.

The most recent of the three Barbar temples was rediscovered by a Danish archaeological team in 1954. During excavations, many tools, including circular Dilmun seals, marble vases, weapons, pottery and small pieces of gold, were found. These are now on display in the Bahrain National Museum. The most famous find was a bronze bull head, dating back to 2000 BC.

Sacred Heart ChurchThe first Catholic Church in Bahrain was built on land given by the late Emir, Shaikh Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa, in 1939. The Sacred Heart Church in the heart of Manama, is a Roman Catholic parish, and serves over 140,000 Catholics. It is one of the two Roman Catholic churches in Bahrain, the other being the “Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Visitation”, formally consecrated on March 3, 1940, in Awali.

National Evangelical ChurchUnder the patronage of the late Emir, Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the National Evangelical Church (NEC) was opened on June 3, 1971. The history of the NEC can be traced back to the late 19th century when Rev. Samuel Zwemer with his team of missionaries from the Reformed Church in America (RCA) arrived in Bahrain on December 7, 1892 and established the first Protestant Church in the Arabian Gulf. For over

a century, Christians from all over the world have gathered at this church to worship and serve as one body of believers united in faith, hope and love.

St. Christopher’s CathedralAlthough there has been a small Anglican presence since the 1890’s, Saint Christopher’s Church, later to become St Christopher’s Cathedral, the seat of the Anglican Bishop in the Gulf, was built in 1953 on land graciously granted by the late Emir, Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. It was named after St Christopher, the patron saint of travelers, recognizing the significance of travel in Bahrain’s history and of the members who made up the new Church.

St Christopher’s School began its life in the homes of members of the church. It moved into the compound of the Church and into a purpose-built building in 1962. By 1972, the school had outgrown the facilities and moved from the compound in 1975.

St. Mary’s Indian Orthodox ChurchThe house of worship became a reality in 1968 when the late Amir, Shaikh Isa Bin Salman Al Khalifa, gifted land for the first Church. In 1976, Shaikh Mohammed Bin Salman Al-Khalifa visited the Church and offered a donation and, in April 2000, His Majesty the King, Shaikh Hamad Bin Isa Al- Khalifa, gifted the adjacent land for the church expansion.

SynagogueThe Jewish community is made up of people with a common historical

background, who trace their roots back to the first Jewish people who arrived mainly from Iraq in the 1880’s, under the reign of the late Amir, Shaikh Isa Bin Ali Al Khalifa, establishing themselves in Bahrain in search of a better quality of life.

The first Jewish settlers in the archipelago arrived from Basra during the late 1880’s. However, the Synagogue was established in the 1930’s and was funded by a Jewish French pearl trader who was addressed as “Baig,” (a respectful title used in the Arabic Language, to address those with high ranks).

Shri Krishna Hindu TempleThe Shri Krishna Temple has a long and vibrant history. Established about 200 years ago by the Thattai (Bhatia) Hindu Community, it is known to be the first in the Gulf Region located in the heart of the Manama Souq near Bab Al Bahrain.

However, the history of the Indian community in Bahrain can be traced back to the time of the Dilmun civilization in 3000 BC. Bahrain’s rulers respected the community’s conservative religious values and it was the late Emir, Shaikh Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa, who granted them permission to establish a temple in 1817. Evolving in infrastructure over the years, today the temple caters to the needs of the larger Hindu community for spiritual growth, social interaction, cultural programs, educational and other constructive activities.

ISKCON BahrainSince 2004, ISKCON Bahrain has propagated spiritual knowledge among its members and educating in the techniques of spiritual life to check the imbalance of values in life and to achieve real peace. ISKCON has adopted various programs to inculcate spiritual values and also have social interaction to lead a healthy life.

As universally practiced, offering scheduled prayers, worshipping the Almighty God is one of the main pillars of the society for its cultural activities. Welfare, peace and prosperity can be achieved by individually understanding the underlying facts of self-realization in relation to the Almighty and way of living.

With the support, tolerance and patronage of the rulers of Kingdom-of-Bahrain and friendly community of this 'peace loving country ' accommodating all walks of life - Iskcon Bahrain is helping to promote among its members and families the culture inherited from its ancestors to contribute to the society for healthy living, believe in the Almighty and extending a helping hand for those in need.

Sikh GurudwaraIt is generally believed that the first Sikh came to Bahrain in 1929. However, it was in 1959 when the first Gurudwara was built. Gurudwara (literally meaning “door to the Guru”) is a place of worship for the followers of Sikhism.

BAHRAIN FOR ALL, ALL FOR BAHRAINwww.bahrain4all.com

SUNDAY, APRIL 14, 2019

In 2005, I opened Delmon Kennels in Barbar and our dream was to offer a unique recreational boarding facility that catered to the pets' individual needs, personalities and activity levels. I felt there was a need to help, care and educate people about animal care as well as

support the wellbeing of our four legged companions.

We started with a handful of pets, which can now board 75 dogs and 30 cats and have two grooming rooms.

We offer a wide variety of training from Puppy to senior and these are group

On Friday 27th March 2019, one of my six beloved pets Ferdinand passed away at at the age of 11years and 4 months. This is the first time that I lost a dog and it has been a whirlwind of excruciating painful emotions.

Ferdie as I called him suddenly went blind and deaf due to a neurological issue. I was asked to make the difficult choice of putting him to sleep, which I immediately rejected - I was praying and hoping for

that miracle. I carried him around for days and tried to comfort him when he was confused or in pain. However, despite everyone’s efforts, his condition deteriorated and he died peacefully.

I watched Ferdinand’s arrival into this world, raised, and nurtured him. To add to the distress, my other dogs' behavior changed. The youngest puppy who was Ferdinand’s best friend would collect toys they played with together and sat on them,

the father stopped eating and the other three (mother and siblings) mooched around sad and lost. Suddenly I did not have an audience; nobody followed me into the bathroom or the kitchen, I did not have a furry friend at my feet and nobody came to the door when I returned home. They too were in mourning and I had to get my house in order! I sent them to Kennels where they went through a series of activities to rewire their brains.

People who do not have pets will never understand the relationship pet owners have with their four-legged companions. Psychologist Julie Axelrod says when a parent, spouse, child or someone close to us dies; our loss is treated with sympathy, comfort, and offerings of sincere condolence.

But, talk to the millions of pet owners who have had a dog hit by a car or a terminally ill cat euthanized and you will hear quite a different story. Many will tell you that most people did not understand the depth of their grief. Mourning a pet may not only be painful because of the loss itself, but deeper due to the potential loneliness of this type of grieving. When we are grieving the loss of a beloved pet, we are actually mourning several losses at the same time. These include:

The loss of unconditional love: Our pets do not judge insecurity or imperfection. They are all accepting in ways few humans can achieve.

The loss of a protégé: Having a pet is much like being a parent. We are responsible for another life and

often go to great lengths to ensure our pet’s physical and emotional comfort. Numerous activities revolve around our animal companion’s needs. Consequently, the loss of a pet can feel like the loss of a child.

The loss of a “life witness”: Not only do our animals provide us with their uninhibited emotional expression, but they also allow us to express parts of ourselves that we may never let other humans see. They observe our weaknesses, our victories, and move through years of our lives with us. During periods of upheaval, they often provide us with security, stability and comfort.

The loss of multiple relationships and routines: We must say goodbye to all the aspects that made up our practical routines. We must not only say goodbye to the physical activities, but to the reflexive way, we called to our companion when we wanted comfort and love. These goodbyes all contribute to the time and patience needed to grieve the loss of a pet.

This has been a deeply sorrowful time, but I am blessed to five more that offer me unconditional love and loyalty. What do they do if he or she finds me sad and in pain? The answer is clear: give love, give comfort, and stay with me for as long as it takes. We can all take a lesson from our animal friends.

classes over a 6-week period. Often people call us about issues with pets so we arrange one on one sessions for any particular problems owners and dogs may be facing.

Our aim is to support pet owners and animals so we have invested in four vans that pick up and drop the pets but also to help with vet visits and emergencies. Over the years, we helped to transport pets all over the world and back in some cases.

We also established a second sister company Delmon Pets Oasis which supplies us with healthy food and treats.

Training is a big part of our daily life at the Kennels. To further support pet owners and our staff, we invite professionals to Bahrain. We have had

Steve Mann and Nando Brown from IMDT (a leading UK education provider for Dog Trainers) do some trick training and an evening with Steve. We recently hosted John Rogerson, a world-renowned dog trainer also from the UK. We ran a very successful and enjoyable CSI course, where dogs and owner learnt more about tracking, sniffing and recall.

Our goal for training is to build an unbreakable bond between a dog and the family. Many of our customers have been with us from pups right the way through until they relocate to a new country or sadly pass away. We strive to help and support owners every step of the way whenever needed.
