of it here in the Valley. With the AZ Concours and Auction Week in January, Concours in the Hills, Copperstate 1000 Rally, the nearly countless club, hot rod and custom shows and don’t forget the monthly Cars and Coffee. Our valley is a car lover’s dream come true. And speaking of Cars and Coffee sponsored by Scuderia Southwest, on the first Saturday of each month, it has outgrown it’s present location at Gainey Ranch and on April 1st is moving to a new location. 7000 E Mayo Blvd. Phoenix. That is on the west side of the Scottsdale Road between Mayo and the 101 freeway. Many of the Desert Stars attend the Cars and Coffee each month. It is a great opportunity to see the cars and meet with fellow car enthusiasts. Enjoy your cars, our valley and we hope to see you at out on the roads.

Auction week in the greater Phoenix area was unusually wet and cool. However, the sky cleared for the Desert Stars Auction

Week Wrap Up – the MB Enthusiasts Dinner and Car Show, just in time to provide a lovely evening for the Enthusiasts’ Car

Show. The winner of the People’s Choice award was Dr. Phil Lutfy’s 1966 250SE Cabriolet. Voters also recognized the

appeal of Dick Sharp’s 1952 300S and Rich Schulte’s 1988 420SEL. There was quite a range of beautiful cars, early to

current models and all cherished by their owners. Schumacher European, Ltd. also provided two new Mercedes for all to view;

the new model GLC Coupe and a GLE.

The event was very well attended, with 80 local and out of state members registered. Dinner was sumptuous and provided

enough choice and variety to please everyone. Maggiano’s Little Italy handles banquet management with customer service at

the forefront; they aim to please and they hit the mark. During dinner, photos of cars from the auction tours arranged for

Desert Stars members were displayed, reminding the group of the cars they saw and bid on and perhaps obtained. Or just

dreamed about. There had been a pre-auction contest, members asked to guess the final auction price of a 2000 SL600, 2002

CL55AMG, and a 2008 CL63AMG. John and Roberta Phin presented the winner, Richard Alsager,

with a certificate and prize at the dinner.

After dinner, Chuck Stanford gave a wrap up of the 4th Arizona Concours held at

the Biltmore Resort at the start of auction week. Chuck is one of the founding

directors of this event, and gave the group insight into the event and the cars,

including the winning 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic.

Dave Tobin (pictured, right) of the SL Market Letter, Inc. was the evening’s

featured speaker. Displaying photos of cars from many of the week’s auctions,

Dave described the car, the predicted results, the actual outcome and some

insight into why certain cars defied expectations. Dave has been a Mercedes

aficionado since pre-school days; he talked from real experience and a love of the

marque. And he reminded us to buy what you love, love what you drive. It is not

always just about the investment, Mercedes are imminently drivable and enduring

and great fun; sometimes also great investments.

This year's annual Poker Run had 28 club member participants in 15 cars. The Poker Run / Tour started at Mercedes-Benz of

Arrowhead where we enjoyed their hospitality and watched several members hold on to their wallets. Next, we were off to the

Hassayampa River Preserve, a 770-acre riparian nature reserve owned by The Nature Conservatory. Everyone appreciated the

flora and fauna in addition to the museum. Then we ventured off to Wickenburg where we stopped at Chaparral Homemade Ice

Cream for great ice cream and some live music. The Poker then took a much need rest at the shops and saloons of Wickenburg.

Next, we hit the trail to the entrance of The Vulture Mine (regrettably, we could not get the tour). From there the Players (all had

their very own Poker Hand this year) were treated to some of the best back roads Arizona has to offer in both scenery and black

top. Finally, Players had to put their hands on the table to see who gets to take home the winnings at the WigWam Resort. Cold

libations and hot appetizers were waiting. All had a great Fajita buffet dinner and wonderful service from the staff at the WigWam.

First place honors go to John Hutchison’s grandson, Raden Chambers (below, left) - With FOUR ACES! - while Kathy Hobson

(below, middle-low) took second place and Terry Horne (below, middle-high) came in third. The “Low hand” award was held by

Dee Cloninger (below, right) and yes, she got a prize too!

the two sessions, rather than who crosses the finish line first. Computerized timing

by the track will determine the finishing order. Awards and recognition ceremonies

will follow the last race. For more information about Octane Raceway and the racing

karts http://octaneraceway.com

Entry fee for the event is $49.00 for drivers, or $10.00 if you just want a “pit-pass”

and refreshments. The fee includes the two races and refreshments at the raceway.

We hope every Desert Star will compete, but if you don’t feel the need for speed,

then we will also have “Pit Passes” for spectators to cheer the racers on and share

in the refreshments.

Register by Sunday, March 5. (EXTENDED, CALL ASAP!) For more information or
