Open Office Plan Makes a Difference!

It has been almost five months since we moved to our new office in Somerset House, and the new environment has become a facilitator of collaboration, communication and productiv-ity among colleagues. The open office plan encourages the movement and interaction of information, ideas, and staff from many different groups, and it links us together in a very posi-tive way. With new furniture, office equipment and technology, the new environment is a big change from the past, and many colleagues have told me that it successfully stimulates creativity, energy and work efficiency between us. I believe that all of us who work in Somerset House couldn’t agree more. Let us keep lever-aging all these obvious advantages and keep up the good work in 2005. Wishing you every success in the Year of the Rooster!

CEO’s message 行政總裁的話

We enjoyed a successful year in 2004 and achieved a better than budgeted performance across the Group. This is a commendable result and one where the Board and share-holders would like to thank our colleagues and most impor-tantly our customers and partners for providing the business opportunities for us to achieve this. Thank you.

Moving ahead with our plans for improved performance, I recently issued our new organisation chart showing how we will be communicating across the Group for the benefit of both our customers and ourselves. The chart includes the centres of excellence where cross-support will play an integral part of our future in areas such as marketing, safety, engineering, quality control and key account management. Each of the business units can call on the executive to help them achieve their goals of improving existing business, developing partnerships and joint ventures and seeking out new opportunities. The days of silo thinking and waiting to be told what to do are long gone. A mature company such as ours seeks to develop the full potential of its people through teamwork. Our revised corporate structure will assist us greatly in achieving that goal.

The Executive Circle that I showed you at the Group Briefing also applies to everyone in the company as you will all be engaged in each of the activities in that circle to a greater or lesser extent during your careers. From time to time you will be involved with customers, interpreting the market or carrying out an operational activity. In the development of your own careers as well as those of your colleagues, the assistance of support services will be necessary to achieve career goals and aspirations.

The ability to improve the service to our customers is a key area for JEC. We are placing a great deal of focus on the management of key accounts to provide better service and spending more time with customers to advise them on the levels of service and range of offers we have available. We are now asking our customers about current performance and what they need from us for the future by listening to them much more closely.

Looking at some of the items in the magazine today you will see we have a range of new products and services on offer including original equipment manufac-ture, wireless solutions and a number of award winning performance fea-tures around Asia. JEC is about people and the Personalities section highlights some of the key people helping us build our business.

We now have people in Singapore and the Philippines helping people in Thailand; people in Thailand sourcing products in Guangzhou and people in Guang-zhou delivering products to Shang-hai; people in Shang-hai developing products for export to Hong Kong and Macau. Around the region the culture of co-op-eration is growing, helping us to better serve our customers.

Please enjoy this edition of our magazine and remember that together we are building a better future.

Taipan’s Visit to JEC大班探訪怡和機器

Mr Percy Weatherall, Managing Director of Jardine Matheson Ltd., visited JEC’s new office in Somerset House, Taikoo Place for the first time in December 2004. Mr James Graham, CEO of JEC, gave Mr Weatherall a guided tour around the office includ-ing the Café and Terrace. Mr Weatherall was very impressed with the open office plan, and spoke highly of the increased opportunities for valuable interaction and communication between JEC staff.

A Great Start for JEC怡和機器新的一頁

The Grand Opening of the new JEC office in Somerset House, held on 2 November 2004, and attended by over 300 guests and colleagues, was a huge success. After the traditional bai sun (suckling pig) and ribbon cutting ceremonies, hosted by Mr Ben Keswick, CEO of Jardine Pacific, and Mr James Graham, CEO of JEC, the company logo was unveiled followed by a speech from Mr Graham and a toast. The ceremony signified a great start for all JEC staff.

怡和機器常盛大廈新辦公室的開幕典禮已於2004年11月2日順利舉行，典禮

非常成功。當天有超過300名嘉賓及公司員工出席。首先由怡和太平洋的行政

總裁Ben Keswick先生和怡和機器行政總裁關正仕先生為我們主持傳統的拜

神切燒豬和剪綵儀式，然後由關正仕先生致辭祝酒，之後再為公司的標誌舉

行揭幕儀式。這次典禮標誌著怡和機器全體員工另一個美好的新開始。

怡和集團的常務董事韋德樂先生於2004年12月

Farewell reception for Mrs Patty Ip and Mr Tony Chow董事榮休

Mrs Patty Ip and Mr Tony Chow retired as Executive Directors after 26 years and 23 years of service, respectively, in Jardine Matheson Group. To celebrate this special occasion, their many friends and old colleagues were invited to a farewell reception held in the JEC office Café and Terrace on 20 December 2004.

怡和機器公司董事葉彭麗嬋女士和周榮光先生分別在服務怡和集團26年及

23年後榮休。為慶祝這個特別的日子，各好友及同事在2004年12月20日應

邀出席了在常盛大廈辦公室舉行的雞尾酒會。

Get the picture with DVR數碼錄影

Installing CCTV is a sensible and common way to protect a business or property, but the system is only as good as the recording that it produces. Traditional VCRs are well known for producing poor quality recordings due to worn-out tapes. They also waste the operator’s time to search and retrieve recorded pictures.

Recent advances in digital recording technology, however, show that more and more businesses are adopting Digital Video Recording (DVR) systems as a replacement. JEC’s digital recorders can provide businesses with images that are always clear and sharp with the ability to locate a particular recording within seconds as well as simultaneous recording and play back functions. JEC has already helped many businesses upgrade and install DVRs to their existing security systems, including banks, logistics companies and large retail chain-stores.

45 years and still going strong!45年的服務

Khun Pairoh Karnjanakrapong is the longest serving staff member of JEC and is based in our Bangkok offi ce. Khun Pairoh joined the company in 1960 as an assistant secretary and is now the Credit Manager of JMTL M&E Contracting Divi-sion. This year, Khun Pairoh is celebrating her 45th anniversary with the company!

Khun Pairoh maintains very good relationships with her customers and enjoys the challenges of her job, but every so often she does get a headache.

For Khun Pairoh, two of the most important things at JEC are her great colleagues and her boss, Khun Narongchai, whom she says is very kind and deserving of admiration. She treats her colleagues like close friends and family members, and her advice to young people is to always perform duties well no matter what hap-pens, remember that every day counts, and al-ways prepare for the road ahead and the future.

A Group briefi ng hosted by the CEO of JEC, Mr James Graham, was held in The Chater Room, Hong Kong Jockey Club on 16 December 2004. The meeting focused on fi ve main areas, including JEC’s future, new direction, new structure, new culture and goals. More than 120 JEC executives at-tended the meeting.

Today, JEC is positioned to grow, prosper, build on past accomplishments and redefi ne itself through aggressive growth and expanded participation in the markets we serve. Our ultimate goal is to cross-sell and to bring our businesses closer together.

First China made CVGF in a Hong Kong project – Shatin New Town Plaza第一台中國製造的CVGF冷水機組進駐香港 – 沙田新城市廣場

The production line of Trane’s, JEC’s joint venture partner, CVGF series water-cooled centrifugal chillers in Taicang City, China was officially started in July 2004. By December 2004, the first two 500-tonne chillers were ex-ported to Hong Kong and installed at Shatin New Town Plaza.

Shatin New Town Plaza was opened in 1984 and had eight chillers installed in their Phase I complex. Since 2003, they have been replacing the chillers gradually. These were the first batch of China made chillers that Trane sold to Hong Kong after the production line was moved to China. In March of this year, Trane will supply another two chillers from the same source to the cus-tomer in the third stage of their replacement program.

7月正式投產。兩台500噸冷水機組已於去年12月運送至香港及安裝在沙田新

城市廣場。

The Guangzhou office was officially opened by JEC senior management on 25 January 2005. Headed by Mr Berg Wat, Operations Director, the Guangzhou office is strategically located in the Pearl River Delta region and is fully op-erational to develop E&M Equipment, Building Products, JEC OEM products, Contracting and Technical Services businesses.

This strategy not only positions the LS Group as a competitive manufacturer of top quality door sets but it also ensures that the door sets are manufactured to BWF (British Woodworking Federation) CertiFire Scheme standards. Leaderflush+Shapland is an extremely well known, highly re-garded brand in the LS Group family of products and is a sym-

bol for quality and reliability. As one of the largest timber door manufacturers in the UK, it was critical that JEC source a sound OEM manufacturer with quality management systems in place and best practise standards of production to ensure that LS Group’s reputation for supply-ing superior door sets manufac-tured to world-class standards would not suffer. With a high quality and diverse

manufacturing base at our doorstep, JEC will also be able to submit more competitive bids for many jobs in the future. Im-portantly, the manufacturing base provides us with the flexibil-ity and capability to expeditiously enter new markets with the confidence that we can supply world-class products and meet a wider range of client requirements. Like many efforts on behalf of our partners and customers, the LS deal proved to be as important for the LS Group as it was for JEC. Many projects do not proceed due to a number of factors, the number one reason being cost. Installing equipment that needs to communicate through traditional wiring and cabling systems can be costly and prohibitive. Some situations may pose too many physical challenges such as barriers of railway lines, waterways or public roads. JEC has found an alternative solution to expensive cabling works using ELPRO industrial wireless I/O products. Today, there are a lot of applications using ELPRO wireless I/O successfully. The X-ray con-tainer scanning system at Lok Ma Chau boarder crossing in Hong Kong uses ELPRO wireless I/O to control the mechanical handling system which transports the container trucks into the X-ray chamber for scanning every three minutes. Reliability is better than fl exible cable for continuous movement. Other applications include the renovation of lighting controls where a great deal of cable can be re-routed using ELPRO wireless I/O. Therefore, utilising an ELPRO system leads to substantial cost savings. ELPRO wireless products provide major advantages over other telemetry solutions as fol-lows:

Our Chief Operating Officer shares his work philosophy營運總監談談他的工作哲學

Mr Siu Ho Wu joined JEC as Executive Director & Chief Operating Officer in November 2004 and is getting to know his way around the company and its staff. Mr Wu is a firm believer in active employee contribution, and he maintains a philosophy that revolves around his strong belief in people and their abilities.

“People are our greatest assets,” he says. “Our business success is based on people’s hard work. We must all have common goals and beliefs in order to achieve the desired bottom line.”

Mr Wu feels that fully understanding responsibilities is most important, and that only through active dialogue and co-operation can we begin to reach our goals. “Communi-cation is the key to business success, and we are already making great strides in that direction with the open plan working environment of our new office.”

Mr Wu encourages senior managers to listen to the opinions of their staff and act upon any good suggestions. “Our success is mainly based on the hard work of our staff and not just our management. As managers, we are just coaches, that’s all,” he adds.

As COO, Mr Wu believes that all staff should be dedi-cated contributors of ideas and innovation, and that they deserve the full trust and respect of all colleagues. “In order to break the ice and begin the process of meaningful dialogue between colleagues, you need trust and support. I try to encourage staff to express their ideas, get right to the point instead of avoiding it, and adopt a down to earth attitude. If we communicate, work together and prepare for the challenges ahead, we can reach new heights together.”

的努力也是企業成功的重要基石。「作為董事，我們就像

教練般便足夠了。」他補充說。作為營運總監，胡先生認

What do you hope to achieve in your new role?JEC’s capability lies with its people and the talents that they have. Providing the best conditions for our staff to develop their potential to the fullest are my prime concern. I also hope that I will be able to work with the management team in the creation of such an environment allowing our people to feel proud of being a key member of company.

What kind of people and type of qualities are JEC looking for?JEC delivers world-class solutions, products and services to our customers. To help drive this we need our people to be client focused; have in-depth knowledge of their clients’ business; be knowledgeable in the products and services that JEC offers; provide creative solutions for our customers; work as members of a team and have integrity and a profes-sional work ethic.

What are the growth opportunities open for em-ployees at JEC?We are working on providing an environment for staff to de-velop their individual potential. Through training and develop-ment, experiential learning and project work, employees are exposed to different technical and leadership situations to develop their skills in these areas.

What are the best and worst aspects about HR? There is never a dull moment in HR! As I work on people re-lated issues, things are highly unique and vary case-by-case. This requires a flexible and sensitive approach.

I do not like HR being referred as a back office function or cost centre. This suggests that we do not add any value to the business or in the generation of revenue. I am really pleased to see that opinion is changing and that HR, or the Human Capital function, is being given a lot more attention at the Board level and that the professionalism of the HR personnel has greatly improved.

What is your greatest achievement?I think the trust that I have earned from colleagues is most rewarding. Trust, to me, reflects how I have gained and earned the confidence of my colleagues by being honest, respectful and fair in balancing the interests of the individual and the company.

What would you do if you weren’t in HR?Probably work in the education sector because I am inter-ested in, and often amused by, how kids learn.

JEC has for the second time won the Outstanding Contrac-tor Award in the Quality Public Housing Construction and Maintenance Awards 2004 Competition co-organised by the Hong Kong Housing Authority, Hong Kong Construction As-sociation, Hong Kong Federation of Electrical & Mechanical Contractors, Hong Kong Construction Industry Employees General Union, Construction Industry Training Authority and the Vocational Training Council.

JEC is providing operations and maintenance services for the air-conditioning and ventilation systems for HKHA’s properties in Kowloon East Region and outperformed the other contestants in the assessment criteria of workmanship & quality, environmental awareness, occupational safety & health, ethical integrity, partnership with the HKHA and qual-ity of customer services.

承建商（冷氣及通風系統保養）大獎。

怡和機器現正為香港房屋委員會於東九龍區的物業提供冷氣及

通風系統操作及保養服務。怡和機器除了在工作範疇上表現出

色外，亦在技術質素、環境保護、職業安全健康、誠信操守、

夥伴合作及顧客服務等六個範疇上達到優良水準，成功超越其

他對手而獲得這項殊榮。

In Thailand, the KS Performance Award is presented an-nually, in memory of the late Ken Sarasin, former Country Chairman of Jardine Matheson Thailand, for the outstanding performance of an employee in JEC’s Bangkok offi ce. The award aims to motivate employees who contribute and de-velop creative ideas, increase work effi ciency and employee retention, as well as highlighting good role models for other employees.

All of the winners were awarded a Bangkok/Hong Kong round trip air ticket and other prizes.

JEC ST2 project (design, supply and installation of electrical and mechanical equipment for Shatin Sew-age Treatment Works (STW) Stage III Extension, Phase II Works) has been awarded the prize of “Con-struction Site Housekeeping Award Scheme 2004”. The Scheme was organised by The Drainage Services Department (DSD) with the key objective to raise the housekeeping standard of DSD’s construction sites. JEC achieved the highest overall average score in the category of E&M works capital contracts beating 45 competitors.

The award covered a period from 1 January 2004 to 31 October 2004. The assessment was conducted through site inspections by Chief Engineers of DSD, the Senior Environmental Protection Offi cer of DSD, and the Safety Advisor of DSD in four different stages. The assessment was based on the following seven criteria.

(1) Cleanliness and Tidiness;(2) Hygiene Condition and Mosquito Control;(3) Environmental Nuisance Control;(4) Health and Welfare Provisions;(5) Traffi c Management and Care for Road-users;(6) Site Appearance and Public Image; and(7) Public Relations and Care for Neighbourhood.

怡和機器公司承接的沙田污水工程項目（沙田污水處理廠第三期第二階段擴建工程包括設計、供應及安裝機電設備），在政府渠務處舉辦的「二零零四年工地整潔獎勵計劃」比賽中獲頒發「最佳工地整潔獎」，而舉辦該比賽其中的一個主要目的是藉此提升渠務處所有合約項目的整潔標準及水平。最後，在云云四十五個參賽工程合約當中，怡和機器於機電工程類別中得到最高評分而獲頒所述獎項。

整個獎勵計劃始於二零零四年一月一日，並於十月三十一日結束，評審過程均以工地視察的方式進行，並由渠務處總工程師、高級環境保護主任及安全顧問分別在四個不同的階段到工地視察及進行評審。至於評審標準乃根據下列七個項目來進行評分；

(1) 清潔和整齊程度；(2) 衛生情況和防蚊措施；(3) 環境滋擾的控制；(4) 健康和福利設施；(5) 交通管理和對道路使用者的照顧；(6) 工地的外觀和公眾形象；以及(7) 公共關係和對鄰舍的照顧。

The recent technical visit to China Light & Power’s (CLP) Castle Peak and Black Point Power Stations was a valuable experience for JEC staff, not only because CLP is a well-established enterprise, but also because CLP is one of our key customers purchasing our company’s products and services for different types of electrical and mechanical systems. The visit helped JEC staff to better understand the needs of an important customer, and realise CLP’s level of satisfaction with JEC.

During the visit, JEC staff was shown plenty of custom-made electrical and mechanical equipment, including a crane for lifting coal from the coal ships. CLP also introduced different systems for generating electricity as well as their individual advantages. It was interesting to learn that natural gas is now the most utilised fuel for generating electricity.

CLP engineers also talked about the future development of power supply in mainland China. In the near future, many provinces in Southern China plan to build more natural gas power plants to meet the energy require-ments of this fast growing economy. As a continuing trend, perhaps there will be many future opportunities to develop JEC’s natural gas and related engineering businesses in mainland China. Through this visit, JEC staff broadened their knowledge of opportunities in power generation and its pe-riphery facilities and gained better insights into the needs of our customer.

這次參觀中華電力有限公司（下稱『中電』）的兩組發電廠（青山發電廠及龍鼓灘發電廠）是一個很寶貴的經驗，除了因為中電是一所具規模和實力的企業外，中電亦是怡和機器在業務上的重要客戶之一。是次參觀正好讓我們更深入了解客戶的需要，並注意到客人對於怡和機器所提供服務的滿意程度。

在這次參觀廠房的過程中，我們看到很多具規模和特別設計的機器，如在碼頭上運送煤的吊機系統。除此之外，中電的工程師亦在當日介紹了不同的發電模式及各模式的優點。另外，最有趣的資料是現時日常最高產電量的發電模式原來是天然氣發電。

中電的工程師亦提及到他們計劃在南中國興建多座天然氣發電廠的重要項目，以迎合南中國未來數十年迅速的經濟發展。對於此介紹，確令參與的同事明白向中國大陸拓展項目的趨勢，或許怡和機器可向此方面繼續發掘有關商機。最後，透過這次參觀，不僅讓我們更了解發電廠的日常運作模式及其需要，更可讓我們對於客人的需要有更深的體會。
