Maps & Communities in Ohio

• Target Grade for lessons: 3rd

• Activities:– Explore maps of Ohio and America.– Explore map of Main street in Xenia, Ohio.– Compare/contrast communities in Ohio.– Explore map of Ohio and the 5 bordering

states. – Explore landforms of Ohio and 5 bordering

states and how they impact communities.

1. Explore maps of Ohio and America

Objective: Students will be able to identify the state of Ohio on a map of the United States and be able to identify major cities in Ohio.

Materials:two print-out maps for each studentglue sticks, scissors, colored pencils,overhead map of the United States, & various map print outs

Lesson 1• Students will discuss words

associated with communities.• Students will discuss how there

are many communities in the United States and also in Ohio, which is one of the states.

Lesson 1 continued…• Students will be given two maps-one of

Ohio and one of the United States.• Students will discuss where Ohio is

found on United States map as well as major cities of Ohio.

• Students will color maps and cut them out, and then glue the maps on the paper to bring home and discuss with parents.

2. Explore map of Main street in Xenia, Ohio

Objective: Students will be able to identify and label streets and places in their community (Xenia), which is in Ohio.

Materials: writing paper, glue sticks, word lists,

colored pencils maps of Xenia, Ohio

Lesson 2• Students will review what they

learned about communities in Ohio.• Students will make a list of important

places in Xenia, Ohio• Students will discuss where the

important places are in relationship to the main street in Xenia, Ohio.

Lesson 2 continued…• Students will each be given a map of

downtown Xenia, Ohio and then label the major streets, such as Main street, Detroit street and West Market street.

• Students will also label the important buildings on the major streets.

• Students will discuss the importance of buildings and streets in a community, and specifically for Xenia.

3. Pictorial tour of Main street in Xenia, Ohio

Objective: Students will be able to use technology to observe, reflect and compare on their community in Ohio (Xenia) with another community in Ohio (Dayton).

Materials:computers, video, TV & VCR,

pencils, journals journals,

poster paper

Lesson 3• Students will watch a video that

compares their community (Xenia, Ohio) with another community (Dayton, Ohio).

• Students will discuss the differences and the similarities they observed from the video.

• Students will compile a class list from their discussion on poster boardpaper.

Lesson 3 continued…• Students will be assigned to compare

and contrast another community in Ohio with Xenia, Ohio, using information from the Internet on classroom computers.

• Students will journal about their observations.

• Students will share their observations with their group.

4. Explore the bordering states of

OhioObjectives: Students will be able to locate

and identify the five states bordering Ohio. They will also be able to identify specific landmarks for each state and understand how geography influences communities.

Materials:maps of United Statesmaps of Ohio and the five states bordering itcolored pencilsglue sticks and

Lesson 4• Students will re-identify Ohio on

class map and then learn briefly about the five bordering states.

• Students will learn about landforms and how geography affects communities.

Ohio and the bordering states to color and label.

• Students will label the states, as well as their major cities, rivers, and landforms.

5.Explore landforms of bordering states

Objective: Students will be able to make model landforms of Ohio and five bordering states, based on maps from previous lesson.

Materials:green and blue salt dough for each table,5 different colors of salt dough (one for each

table), a piece of ply board for each table, landforms map of Ohio and 5

bordering states

Lesson 5• Students will use their maps of Ohio

and five bordering states and review how landforms impact communities.

• Students will work with table to make a model of the landforms

for Ohio and each of the bordering states.

Lesson 5 continued…• Students will work cooperatively to

create one model per group.• Students will journal about how

they had to work in a small communities to make salt dough models as well as journal about the importance of cooperation.
