Despite their love of Maple Ridge, Kathie and Ed Chiu are willing to take on the biggest challenge of their careers. by Maria Rantanen [email protected] They came to Maple Ridge as a family of five, but when Kathie and Ed Chiu move to Ontario in a couple months time they will leave behind 13 fam- ily members. The Chius have been given “farewell orders” from the Salvation Army after serving in Maple Ridge for 17 years and overseeing the expansion of programs and services to the town’s down-and- out population. The Chius will be moving to London, Ont. with their two youngest children, leaving behind their adult son, adult twin daughters, two sons-in- law, and eight grandchil- dren. But they have been presented with what they describe as a huge chal- lenge – overseeing the Centre of Hope in London, which includes in one agency almost the same number of major social agencies that exist in Maple Ridge. The Centre of Hope includes a 267-bed shelter, a medical detox centre with 18 beds, 100 tran- sitional beds, a family health team with doctors and nurses, and a food bank. Kathie said she and Ed are “overwhelmed” by the task ahead. “We’re quite shocked the Army would entrust [such a] huge responsibil- ity on us,” she said. Kathie said she and her family love Maple Ridge and when she and Ed retire, they plan to return. “I’m totally going to miss the community net- work,” Kathie said, adding that there is a willingness among the local social agencies to co-operate and not be territorial. Ed added there’s is a “mutual encouragement” among service providers that makes their work easier. But as ordained pastors of the Salvation Army, they have committed to go where they are asked to – with some negotiation, Kathie explained. “The Army has treated us very well,” Kathie said. “There’s no reason for us to say ‘you can’t move us’.” The Chius moved to the Lower Mainland in 1990 after being stationed in Saskatchewan for two years, and they have been stationed in Maple Ridge since 1996. When they arrived, the Salvation Army was located on 119th Avenue by the Bingoplex. In 2000, Kathie and Ed started noticing a sharp increase in demand for their services – more homelessness, more mar- ginalized people, and a crystal meth epidemic. There were couples liv- ing in cars, people getting evicted, more people liv- ing risky lifestyles – they even found a woman living in a boat with her two children after leaving an abusive relationship. The Caring Place opened in its current build- ing at 222nd Street and Lougheed Highway in April 2003. The centre has a 25-bed year-round shelter, a cold, wet weather shelter, and 15 long-term beds. They also serve up to 9,000 meals per month and hold a monthly health clinic. Creating what is now known as the Caring Place has been a big accomplish- ment for this couple. But Kathie said the big- ger accomplishment has been seeing people who use their services get back on their feet. Over recent years, Kathie said the Army has real- ized it has to offer more than “three hots and a cot;” rather, they have to help people mentally, physically, and spiritually. Recently Kathie said she was praying with two young women at the Caring Place who were enmeshed in a life of drugs and prostitution, and she knew she was planting a seed in their lives that would help get them back on their feet. “What a greater priv- ilege can there be than speaking words of life into their reality,” she said. Both Kathie and Ed are from Toronto, and the return allows them to be near Ed’s aging parents. Moving back east will also mean a cultural adjustment, Kathie said. On the West Coast, people work to live, while in the Toronto- area, people live to work. She said their family has adjusted to the more laid back lifestyle and wonders how people will react when she and Ed aren’t always in their Army uniforms – a cul- tural shift she hopes to lead out east. a few Conservative colleaguessince the election.Theyre all pretty excited

about the possibilities and sta-bilities it brings, Kamp said. Not having to plan for another

election within a year or twomakes an MPs job easier, headded.

Being a part of a majoritygovernment wont change howKamp will work at the locallevel, he said. Kamp will con-tinue to follow the same values

at his office by serving his con-stituents, he vowed.Kamp will also continue to

work with the local municipalcouncils to help them set prior-ities accordingto what grantsare available, hesaid. But, with the

Conservativegovernment vow-ing to eliminatethe deficit by2014, Kamp saidthere will befewer grant pro-grams unlikewhen the stimulus funding wasput in place during the reces-sion.Kamp said he expects the

  • Greens and Liberals would have faredmuch better if young people coulddecide who governed Canada.

    by Maria [email protected]

Like in the actual federal election,Randy Kamp would be MP if studentscould have voted, but the marginbetween him and his rival NDP candidatewould have been narrower.During Student Vote, a program organ-

ized by Elections Canada, students atseven schools in Maple Ridge and PittMeadows, and four in Mission, gaveKamp 35.8 per cent of their vote whereashe received 54.3 per cent in the election.NDP candidate Craig Speirs received

31.1 per cent of the student vote com-pared to 35.5 per cent in the election.Green candidate Peter Tam received

21.9 per cent from students while hereceived five per cent in the May 2 elec-tion. From students, Liberal candidateMandeep Bhuller received 11.2 per centwhere his actual result was 5.2 per cent.Half a million students across Canada

cast their ballots in the Student Vote andthese resulted in a minority governmentfor the Conservatives with 128 seats, 113seats for the NDP, 48 for the Liberals, fivefor the Bloc Quebecois, and five for theGreens. The actual numbers were 167,102, 34, four, and one, respectively.Holly Burrows and Sarah Fruean organ-

ized the student vote at Pitt MeadowsSecondary this year. They also arrangedto have the four candidates come into theschool and speak to the students on theirissues.

While all the candidates spoke wellto the students, Burrows said Tam wasable to relate to them and build a rapportgiven his experience as a Scout commis-sioner.He really communicated when he

spoke, Burrows said.Students study government in social

studies at school, Burrows said, but theydont always relate the information toreal life. Having the Student Vote eventhelped them gain a better understandingof the political system. The election is supposed to mirror a

real election, but its up to each teachersdiscretion to allow their students to cometo the library to vote, said Paula Cyr,who organized the vote at WestviewSecondary. More online at www.mrtimes.com, click on News

on gaming funds according to RickHoward, co-chair of the new Coalition for Kids Sake.A number of kids in Maple Ridge were receiving Big

Brothers Big Sisters services and now, no more, he said. The Abbotsford office, which ran satellite offices in

Maple Ridge and Mission, have identified what Howardsaid are the 13 most important files, and are willing toservice those from Abbotsford. But more kids and families need help, and Howard said

this group is a necessary service in Maple Ridge. When the local chapter was suspended, co-chair

Patricia Anderson said the group got together right awayto circulate a petition since the Abbotsford office toldthem community support was not present in Maple Ridgeto keep that office open.We proved to them that the community support was

there, she said. The awareness just wasnt there. It is such a needed cause, she added. There are a lot

of single-parent families that really need that.We cant allow our kids in Maple Ridge to not have

access to these services, agreed Howard, who said theywant the organization back up and running by June.

Oh sure, put your email addressin with the column so people canwrite you nasty letters at home.Actually, I dont mind; I think a

column should stimulate debate, even if it includes words suchas loathsome, malignant, cheap, shameless, and unprofessional. This in response to my descrip-

tion of Randy Kamp pushing aspecial needs child out of the wayto get into a photo, which he didnot, of course.I mean, who would really

believe this scenario, besides K. Brown the writerof a recent letter to the editor.Knowing I would generate some response, I did

render a pre-emptive apology in a subsequent col-umn explaining that I was referring to the photoopportunities so many of our candidates seek out,the old kissing babies stereotype. The letter was also sent to the publisher,

to Herr Kamp, and to my mother, an OntarioConservative who chewed me out on the phonefor an hour after her nap at the home.Mr. Brown took the opportunity of chastising

me to get out his soapbox and preach about ourParliamentary democracy [which is] an adversar-ial system of government, our free and opensociety, common decency, the ethics of jour-nalism blah, blah, blah which I found ironic inthat the writer seems to be a Conservative. He points out that we have opposing political

view points. I do have opinions that would prob-ably place me a little left of centre. So lets assume he is a Conservative, the irony

being that he was defending a government theHarper Government that made transparencya dirty word, that was found in contempt ofParliament, that went crying to the gov-gen andprorogued Parliament twice when things got alittle uncomfortable, and that pissed or promisedto piss away our money on rubber bullets andadvertising, prisons, and fancy fighter jets.Steve Harper, dictator, made a mockery of dem-

    ocracy; and you know what?

He gets to do it all again for fourmore years with and this is thescary part a majority govern-ment. I think its time to move toCairo. Its an ugly business, politics,

a slow-moving monster that eatstoo much and craps too much anddeserves to die; but then wedhave to contend with somethingelse this country wont runitself. So keep on writing. Im flattered

that people might think Id haveanything to do with the outcome of an election. The guys at Kamps office think Im more of a

help than a hindrance. And just to prove it, wegot Randy back, as well.Heck, Mr. Brown ought to be praising, not con-

demning me. Im performing a service here.Thank you, as well, to another fan who calls

me a clueless, ignoramous because of my com-ments about Jehovahs Witnesses who, he said, would NEVER (his capitals) mention Jesus atanyones door as I claimed they did.He advised me to contact my local JW cult (his

word), which I tried to do, using several numbersin the book; but apparently they dont like to bebothered at home.I did go online, and in two videos heard

Witnesses refer to Christ as the reigning priestand king who commanded Witnesses to preachdoor to door.So there, JH, you should learn some facts

before you critizize [sic] and learn to spell.Oh, and by the way, the local Kingdom Hall did

return my call, and I gave them your name forthe Armageddon checklist.PS: My deadline and good taste dont allow me

the time to comment at length on the election.Suffice it to say that I am happy for ElizabethMay and my daughter who lives in her riding. Iam perplexed about what went down in Quebec;maybe Jack should change the partys acronymto the NQDP; and kudos to Speirhead for giving itthe old college try.

    Our View

    Thanks to allordinary folks

Congratulations and thanks are inorder, all around, from top to bottom.

But now that we have a majoritygovernment back in Ottawa, it is moreimportant than ever to establish whois at the top and who constitutes thebottom in our national political hier-archy.

Well start at the top.Congratulations and thanks to all the

folks in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadowswho made the effort to go to the polls, either on election day or through one ofthe many added opportunities to vote inadvance or with special ballots.

By rationally considering the issuesand choosing the candidates who bestsuit each individuals vision for whoand what is best for the country, ordin-ary citizens make the machinery ofdemocracy run, and are responsible forsteering Canada into the future.

Next up in the congratulatory peck-ing order are the people more ordin-ary folks who work with candidatesand/or political parties during electioncampaigns (and often between them, aswell) to disseminate the messages thatvoters need to make informed choices.Everyone who takes democracy serious-ly owes those people a debt of thanks.

On the next rung down the ladderare the candidates. Congratulations toRandy Kamp for his convincing vic-tory on Monday. Its clear that histhoughts and concerns most reflectthose of the people of Maple Ridge andPitt Meadows, but he has a difficultjob ahead, knowing that he will haveto serve many masters whose personalviews differed more towards his oppon-ent candidates all of whom we thankfor their time and effort, and for theiroffer of service to their community andtheir country.

And finally, on the bottom not thetop is yet another ordinary citizen,Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Wecongratulate him on his parliamentarymajority, and thank him for his pastservice to our country, and for his offerto continue serving all of the citizens ofCanada. It wont be an easy job to bal-ance the needs and desires of all of thecountrys 34 million people.

He deserves to know that hisemployers all the people of Canada are appreciative of his efforts.

Dear Editor,The recent letter by Ms.Rosenau [Save

farms, infill instead, April 26 Letters,TIMES] was interesting but strayed fromreality. The reason the Albion Flats is being

looked at for commercial development isbecause the people who own the vacantland in the core refuse to sell it or investanything to improve it.Much is owned by offshore investors

who refuse to do anything and are thecause of our stagnation.Unfortunately the choice isnt between

Albion and the downtown core butbetween Albion, the Kwantlen lands ineastern Maple Ridge, or the Pitt Meadowsproperty on Lougheed Highway just eastof Harris Road.If Albion isnt developed, one of the

others will be, the downtown core isnteven in the mix.The only choice that will see tax rev-

enue come to Maple Ridge is Albion andfor that reason alone council must support

its exclusion from the ALR and welcomethe much needed investment opportunity. If the Kwantlen develop their land,

Maple Ridge will never be the same. Wewill become the poster child for urbansprawl. With respect to those who see this as a

loss of good farmland, it isnt. The reason it should be excluded has

little to do with the residential develop-ment surrounding it, and everything to dowith the fact that it has a serious drainageproblem: its just too wet and the remedyis too expensive.Instead of stalling much needed

development in Albion, why not ask whyso much other good agricultural land inMaple Ridge is allowed to sit fallow, withnothing being done with it.Answering that question would be much

    more productive.Graham Mowatt, Maple Ridge

Dear Editor,Mission residents rejected the $300-mil-

lion Stave Lake P3 water treatment facil-ity for good reason. The proposal is of no benefit for current

residents and will saddle us with debt fordecades to come. The proposed new water line doesnt

do anything to upgrade Missions exist-ing aging infrastructure, despite evidencethere are leaks in the system which willneed to be fixed.Instead the costly water line takes a

sharp turn west to Silverdale. The propos-al intends to give an unknown corpora-tion control of the operations of our waterfor 25 years or even longer. The costs of water to residents would

be tied to the cost of hydro.

This, at a time when hydro rates areskyrocketing, means higher water costsfor residents.Simply put, the Stave Lake P3 pro-

posal is a public bailout intended to savedevelopers in Silverdale and Abbotsfordhundreds of millions in infrastructurecosts, and we havent even been toldwhat the sewer costs will be.Citizens Against Urban Sprawl Society

(CAUSS) believes that Mission shouldlearn to live within its means rather thanforcing growth at any cost.We simply cannot afford the mas-

sive infrastructure costs associated withsprawl-water.A truly sustainable community must

live within basic economic and environ-mental limits, and must ensure that thepublic interest is not overridden by cor-porate agendas.

Christians havethick skin, TimDear Editor,I was reading Tim Tylers column

[Nuptials, hockey dwarf election,April 29, TIMES].Lucky for Tim, we live in a free

dead. But would it be possible for Tim

and anyone else to have some respectfor feelings and beliefs of otherCanadians?Oh, and by the way, Moses house

rules are also rules here in Canada, you shall not kill, you shall not stealor gossip about others. And Jesus rule: Do unto others

Dear Editor,I was at an all-candidates meeting

recently and my incumbent ConservativeMP Randy Kamp was asked about all thenew prisons and the law.He made it clear that people who break

the law should be in prison. As far as I know, 52 per cent of

Canadians want pot legalized, and Ibelieve the figure for B.C. is 68 per cent. But its against the law.I wonder how you are going to feel

when your mother or father or son ordaughter is put in one of our brand newjails for smoking a product that is as com-mon as booze never mind the fact that itwill cost Canadians more than $300,000 ayear to keep them there. The Conservatives are so out of step

with Canadian values on so many issuessuch as ethics, pot, global warming, publichealth care, civil rights (G20), etc.A Conservative majority should be a

frightening thing to most Canadians. Itwas painful to watch as a minority gov-ernment.

    by Maria [email protected]

Students have beengetting lessons in goodposture at Maple RidgeChristian School. This has been in antici-

pation of their latesttheatre production whichis set in a time whenclothing was much morerestrictive than the casualgarbs worn today. The play in two acts,

Little Women of OrchardHouse, is written by DavidLongest, and the schoolstheatre arts teacher RegParks is in charge of theproduction. The play is an adapta-

tion of Little Women byLouisa M. Alcott andintroduces the playwrightto the audience as a char-

    acter.The play takes place

during the American civilwar, and learning to walkand act in period costumes floor-length ballroomdresses with corsets andtuxedos presented somechallenges for the 34actors who are studentsfrom Grades 2 to 12.The students had to be

fitted and tucked, Parkssaid, and they had to getused to cumbersome andstiff clothing and how tomove in it.But the students have

enjoyed wearing the per-iod clothing, Parks said,

because its so differentfrom what they weartoday. The set is a house that

was built by the parentsand takes over the schoolstage. The set is probably the

most elaborate weve doneby far, Parks said.

Little Women of OrchardHouse runs on Thursday,Friday, and Saturday at7:30 p.m. with a matineeon Saturday at 2:30 p.m.Tickets are $15 for adultsand $12 for seniors andstudents. Maple RidgeChristian School is locatedat 12140 203rd St.

A Maple Ridge resident has started hisjourney to becoming a professionalmusician by entering a contest.

    by Amy [email protected]

Thomas Haney student Kyle Stibbsknows he has a long road ahead of him.But he is preparedto work hard andkeep going toachieve his dreamof being a profes-sional musician. The 17-year-

old plays guitar, piano, the uku-lele, mandolin, and even thebass. Guitar isdefinitely theone Im best at,he said. But Idrather be betterat piano. Guitarcomes easy tome.He has put his

skills and musicto the test byentering the Live at Squamish online con-test. This is a weekend-long music festivalhappening on Aug. 20 and 21, and focus-ing on supporting local bands by askingmusicians to submit their work. The pub-lic then votes for its favourites. Its a really cool idea, said Stibbs.

You submit any kind of visual and audio, and anyone can log in with your Facebook

account and vote, he added. It is interesting to Stibbs to see the dif-

ferent levels of talent and professionalismin the province, and he is glad to be giventhe chance to be part of it.I dont want to be this cliche of the

small-town kid, he said. Lets face it,Maple Ridge isnt the easiest place to geta venue.Stibbs admitted he is not looking at this

competition with an overly optimistic viewof winning. But

he knows theexposure fromthe competi-tion is goodfor him, andwill hopefullyopen doors.People are

on that sitelooking forother musi-cians, hesaid. It isharder to getyourself outthere than itis to write thesongs. Its apretty dog eatdog world forsure.

Stibbs hopes to take a year off next yearto make some money and work on hismusic, which he describes as indie-acous-tic on the brink of becoming pop. Then, hes hoping to attend Emily Carr to studyart and music. For now, people can vote for him until

    Friday, May 6 at http://metropresents.strutta.com/entry/165539.
